The School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics (MLAL) is a large and vibrant unit within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and plays a vital role in promoting quality research, teaching and learning at the University of Limerick. Faculty members in the German Section of the School contribute to a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, supervise research students to Masters and PhD level and are actively involved in a range of research centres. Teaching Assistant in German Studies (0.7) 10-month specific-purpose contract (1 September 2022- 30 June 2023) The successful applicant will contribute to the teaching of German at all undergraduate levels within the framework of the School’s commitment to target-language teaching. They will also coordinate modules and set and grade assignments as part of a teaching team. It is envisaged that teaching will be primarily in the areas of: German language (all CEFR levels); Business German; Germany in Europe and the wider world; German-Irish relations; German literature and film. The appointee will also undertake service roles within the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics, including providing students with support and advice on their German Studies, and contribute to extracurricular, outreach and promotional activities as required by the Head of School, Prof Liam Murray.

Essential criteria • • • • •

Master’s degree (or higher) in German Studies, German as Foreign Language (DaF) or a related discipline. Teaching experience at HE level in German Studies /DaF, preferably in an Englishspeaking environment. Excellent language skills in German (C1) and in English. Experience in working as a member of a team in a collegial and collaborative manner. Ability to carry out administrative duties related to teaching.

PhD in a relevant discipline. Qualification in DaF. Experience in teaching Business German and/or working in a business environment in a German-speaking country. Experience of teaching in online/virtual settings and/or using digital technologies for language teaching.


The appointment will be made for a ten-month period (1 September 2022 to 30 June 2023) to cover teaching release. Teaching Assistant Salary Scale (2022):

€32,137 per annum pro rata
