Challenge: Design a non-denominational chapel and outdoor garden/meditation/gathering space. The spaces are to be used by persons from all faiths and should be the most universal form possible. I focused on shielding the site from the outside through heavy vegetation. I aimed to create a symbolic journey or katabasis to the chapel from the 17th street entrance by traveling through the forest and past the lake (over world) to the cut level (underworld) underneath the lake and into the chapel with views to the sky above that I aimed to represent a nirvana.

Tiny Home/Studio Space
8
Challenge: Design a tiny home or studio space that would be located on an empty lot. The project was to emphasise green choices in design and materials used. To keep within the green design priority the house’s footprint was limited to just under 100 sqft; as well as incorporated sustainable choices in materials (such as bamboo, recycled concrete), integrated and sustainable choices in design included water saving features (rain water collection barrel, composting toilet), capacity for solar panels on the roof, and an operable roof window for natural ventilation. Spring Gardens Garden Pavilion
Challenge: Design a garden structure that includes an outdoor covered pavilion for farmer’s markets and outdoor seating. The building’s footprint is inspired by the moment a flower bud begins to bloom and how one might perceived this action. The paths are organized in the movement of a raindrop.

Kuri Cabin
Low Ground Disturbance Shelter
14
Challenge: Kuri Cabin’s design (Inspired by “Hut on Sleds” by Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects), perches itself on sleds to minimise contact with the ground. Nearly the entire facade is enveloped behind rough reclaimed timber clad shutters, which fold away to reveal and shade a large picturesque window on the front facade. Inside, the intimate cabin has ample storage on the warm walnut built in bookshelves, while heat is supplied by way of a kindling burning oven. At the rear of the cabin, a lofted sleeping area is accessible via ladder. Kuri Cabin takes advantage of the park’s natural splendour by enhancing inhabitants’ views.

Cherry Pop
Modular Night Seating Pop Up
16
Challenge: Located on the corner of 19th and Cherry Streets in Center City Philadelphia. This Pop-up would enhance the area by supplying a visually interesting evening display to attract people who would otherwise leave the area after working hours, give space to local food vendors to sell, and supply a space for relaxing and interaction between commuters, local residents, and tourists that frequent the area. To better interact with the daily shifts in the usage of the area, the modular seating booths are designed to be moveable as well as color customized.

Cherry POP
The site is located on the corner of 19th and Cherry Streets in Center City Philadelphia. Through our research and observations there seemed to be little to no spaces for people to sit and eat. Most of the eateries cater to a more on the go style of food consumption. This Pop-up would enhance the area by supplying a visually interesting evening display to attract people who would otherwise leave the area once they are done with their day, give space for local food vendor’s to come and sell, and supply a space for relaxing and interaction between commuters, local residents, and tourists that frequent the area. To better interact with the daily shifts in the usage of the area, the modular seating booths are designed to be moveable as well as color customizable. During the heavy morning commute the booths could be pushed out of the way to better allow fast moving pedestrian traffic on and off the site. During the evening they can be spread out to welcome slower moving traffic. This allows for each booth to be an independent entity, with their own lights and orientation or to allow for booths to act as a whole, lighting as Day Circulati Night Circulation Diagram Night Site Circulation Diagram one hue to celebrate a holiday or event and creating a carefully choreographed arrangement. Challenge: The Comcast Mural Arts building will be a collaborative expansion of Comcast’s University Relations Program Opportunities with Mural Arts that will provide an environment for the creation and display of physical, digital, and interactive art installations such as the Comcast Center Digital Experience for the city of Philadelphia. The design pairs a multi-faceted art program helmed by Mural Arts with the digital experience of Comcast to create an incubation hub for the teaching, development, and deployment of these installations.

Each panel is a six sided hexahedron with 5 sides facing the exterior. Each of the 5 panels are either glass filled or metal filled to let light into or shade the interior space behind the curtain wall. The resultant pattern creates the dynamic movement along the facade.

Fractured
Jefferson Glass Competition (2nd Place)
Challenge: 1 Kelly Drive requires a privacy wall to separate it’s carpark from the green set back created between Kelly Drive and the building edge. Fractured, breathes visual interest back into an under-stimulating stretch of historic waterfront real estate while paying homage to the local geographic conditions. Fractured, accomplishes this by offering two layers of interaction; a large flowing sculpture made to be experienced from afar by car or bike, as well as a more human scaled glass wall up close. the shape of the wall panels invoke the form of the natural stone cliffs found along the river’s edge.
