The Public Safety training department offers classes in fire, rescue, EMS, in-service law enforcement, and emergency management. A broad range of classes are offered throughout the year based on area needs, agency requests, and new training standards.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS)

EMS training prepares the student to perform patient care in a prehospital setting. The course goal for EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic is to prepare competent entry-level EMS personnel in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains. After successful completion of each class, a state examination is required for NC OEMS credentialing. EMT Refreshers, paramedic refreshers, Basic Anatomy and Physiology, CPR, and more are offered throughout the year. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Initial Courses will be offered daytime and evening. You may request a course for your agency.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR EMT INITIAL CLASS All students taking EMT initial classes taught under Economic and Workforce Development will require a CASAS English Placement Test with a score of at least 249 (11th grade reading level) OR by providing an official college transcript showing successful completion of ENG 111 within the past four years. You can find information for placement testing services at cfcc.edu/testing. This course is designed to train an individual to become an entry-level Emergency Medical Technician. The course teaches patient assessment and basic life support techniques such as airway management and CPR, hemorrhage control, oxygen administration, shock, bandaging and splinting, management of trauma and medical patients, child birthing, and transfer of patients to medical facilities. This course follows the guidelines established by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services and meets the most current curriculum version. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to sit for the North Carolina and National Registry credentialing exams.

ADVANCED EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (AEMT)
The course is designed to build upon the EMT knowledge and provide health professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to better their critical thinking. This course meets NCOEMS requirements. Start date will be posted at cfcc.edu/publicsafety/ems. Placement testing and a copy of a North Carolina EMT card are required to register.

PARAMEDIC
This course is designed to prepare a person to care for the sick and injured at an advanced level of care. Persons must be currently certified as an AEMT to be accepted into the program. This course covers topics that include basic anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, respiratory emergencies, venous access and medication administration, airway management, medical documentation, cardiac emergencies, pediatric emergencies, caring for the elderly, and medical emergencies. This course prepares persons to be competent entry-level practitioners and upon successful completion are eligible to take the North Carolina State credentialing exam.

We offer in-person Heartsaver First/Aid and CPR as well as BLS for Healthcare providers multiple times a year. There is also an option to complete an online module at your own pace and have a certified instructor verify your skills on campus (Basic Life Support - BLS) Products | American Heart Association). CPR INSTRUCTOR
Become a CPR instructor certified by the American Heart Association. This is a 6-hour in-person course that requires online work prior to coming to class. This class teaches the student everything from the administrative responsibilities to how to set up a classroom for effective learning. Cost is $170 ( $70 registration is fee waiver eligible). The Fire/Rescue Training programs offer fire and rescue training as well as Emergency Management classes in New Hanover and Pender counties. Classes for North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) State Certification, National Fire Academy, FEMA, and NC Emergency Management are offered by coordinating with area fire and rescue departments and emergency management personnel. Firefighter recertification and courses in the latest technology are also offered locally. CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), fire brigade/ emergency response team training and specialized training programs are available upon request.

BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING (BLET)
Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprises. This program utilizes state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal investigation, juvenile laws, civil process, law enforcement driver training, ABC laws, motor vehicle laws, patrol techniques, court procedures, emergency responses, and ethics and community relations. Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study to receive a certificate. Upon successful passage of the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission, students may seek job opportunities with state, county, and municipal governments in North Carolina. In addition, knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired in this course of study qualify individuals for job opportunities with private enterprises in such areas as industrial, retail, and private security.

NIMS ICS (National Incident Management System) Incident Command System - FEMA - Federal Emergency Management Agency
The National Incident Management System (NIMS) which was developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private sector, and nongovernmental organizations, including all first responders, to work together effectively during domestic incidents. The intent of NIMS is to be applicable across a full spectrum of potential incidents and hazard scenarios, regardless of size or complexity and improve coordination and cooperation between public and private entities in a variety of domestic incident management activities. Prerequisite: Approval of the BLET Director. Copy of reading placement test results taken less than one year prior to the class starting date; the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission requires all enrollees to take a nationally standardized reading test prior to being admitted to a BLET course. Scores indicating being proficient in reading will meet reading test requirements. A certified copy of the High School, GED, or Adult High School transcript is required. Some diplomas earned through correspondence enrollment are not recognized toward the educational requirements; this is reviewed by North Carolina Training and Standards on a case-by-case basis.

DETENTION OFFICER CERTIFICATION COURSE
Who Should Attend: All persons who are employed or wish to be employed as detention officers at local confinement facilities are required by the Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission or the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to successfully complete this course. The basic standard operating procedures for local confinement facilities, the role and responsibilities of professional detention officers will be covered. This course employs lecture, discussion, demonstration, and practical exercises.
Course Requirements: Attendance is required at all class sessions. The student must score a minimum of 70% on written tests and/ or practical exercises for each block and score a minimum of 70% on the final Commission-administered written exam. All students confirmed for this course are required to provide a completed Medical History Statement (F-1) and Medical Examination Report (F-2), unless they have been grandfathered by the NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.
Special Concerns: Uniforms are required for class unless otherwise stated. Students must also have proper gym clothes for physical assessment, physical training, and subject control techniques. Some evening sessions may be required.

TELECOMMUNICATOR CERTIFICATION COURSE
Who Should Attend:
All telecommunicators (sheriffs, police, emergency service centers, highway patrol, etc.) who are employed by or sponsored by an emergency service center. All persons who are employed as telecommunicators under the direct supervision of a sheriff’s office are required by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission to enroll and successfully complete the course. This requirement excludes all telecommunicators who are grandfathered. Course Goals: To present the basic standard operating procedures for telecommunicators and to develop the role and responsibilities of the emergency service telecommunicator. Methodologies: The course employs lecture, discussion, demonstration, and practical exercises.

STUDIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Do you have a passion for music? This course allows novice and experienced instrumental musicians an opportunity to be part of a community symphonic orchestra, providing eleven hour-long group rehearsals and an end of semester concert. The class is open to strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and keyboard. Students will practice instrumental technique and work to improve their musicianship in a group setting. Both classical and contemporary music will be featured.
