Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
The Chicago Foundation for Education was founded in 1985 by a small group of visionary individuals who shared a passion for improving the quality of education in Chicago and the critical role that teachers play in affecting that mission. From the very beginning, and for nearly 30 years since, Debby Jannotta played a leading role in assembling, shaping, and driving the growth of the organization. For those of us who were privileged to receive a note or words of encouragement from Debby over the years to support CFE, we can attest to how deeply she cared for and nurtured CFE. We were saddened by Debby’s passing this May, but the tremendous outpouring of support to CFE in her honor has come as no surprise.
As a career-changer, going from the business world into the schoolhouse, the ride has been a wild one to say the least. From working in a pristine, suburban corporate office tower to a wellworn elementary school building on Chicago’s west side has been humbling. On early mornings as I walk to my classroom, I often chuckle and say, “How in the world did I get here?!” Teaching in Chicago is no joke. It is not for the faint of heart. It is more than challenging. It is more than demanding. Having a Chicagobased organization like CFE available to teachers is a godsend.
Debby would be proud of the solid year that we had across all of our programs. For 2014, CFE awarded 286 Small Grants to 322 Pre-K through 8th Grade CPS teachers, reaching 18,527 students. In our Fund for Teachers Program, CFE provided 30 fellowships to 37 Chicago Public School teachers. Our 2013 Teachers Workshop featured 72 CFE teacher presenters and nearly 350 teachers participated in the event. A special “thank you” goes to Bob Hauser and Georgia Anne Moore, who served as Senior Fellows in our Action Research Leadership Institute (ARLI) Program. As we look forward to the new school year, CFE’s financial health has never been stronger, and operations are efficient and focused. We embarked on a process this past year to further refine our strategic and long-term planning, and that work will continue throughout the coming year. We also will be applying significant effort to strengthening our corporate and community partnerships. But in large part, our goals remain the same, and most importantly, consistent to the mission and legacy that Debby continues to inspire. Sincerely, Alex Washington Board Chairperson
During my first year as a teacher, I often heard about the Chicago Foundation for Education. Two years later, I took the plunge as a CFE Study Group Member. Collaborating with and learning from other CPS teachers was such a great experience that I joined two more CFE Study Groups. Three years later, I applied and was accepted as a fellow in CFE’s Action Research Leadership Institute (ARLI) Program. That experience led me to share my research findings as a workshop presenter at the Illinois Reading Council’s annual conference. Fast forward to today: CFE has supported me as a teacher with an additional ARLI Fellowship, two Small Grants, and a Coach Grant for a school-based Study Group. CFE gave me the encouragement to apply for a national award, The Fishman Prize, where I was named to their Honor Roll. Finally, I am eternally grateful to CFE for awarding me the 2014 Debby Jannotta and Shirley Jaffee Teacher of the Year. I now look forward to serving as a member of the CFE Board of Directors for the next two years. CFE, thank you for providing me and all teachers in Chicago with such invigorating and enlightening opportunities, and for caring about us and the children we teach! Sincerely, Bob Hauser 3rd Grade Teacher Legacy Charter School

Tribute to Debby Jannotta We were saddened this year by the loss of an exceptional woman. Debby Jannotta, a dedicated CFE Board Member, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 after a long fight against breast cancer. She was a generous individual who devoted her life to caring for others. Along with serving on CFE’s Board, she served on the Lyric Opera’s Women’s Board and The Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center. Each of these organizations was fortunate to benefit from her incredible energy and support. Born Deborah Ross in Evanston, Debby grew up between Highland Park and Hinsdale. After residing in Virginia Beach and Boston with her husband, Edgar “Ned” Jannotta, they settled back to the Chicago area. Debby was a loving wife to Ned, doting mother to Katie, Ned Jr., Peter, and Ross, and supportive grandmother to 14 grandchildren. Debby is an absolutely essential part of CFE’s rich history and remains a staple in our greater Chicago education community. Committed to improving and enhancing the public education system, Debby helped create the Chicago Foundation for Education in 1985, and served as a Board Member and active volunteer throughout her life. Her focus was on fundraising, and alongside Shirley Jaffee, they made up the CFE Board Development Team. She worked tirelessly to empower teachers and help offer character education to public school students. CFE was proud to celebrate Debby at our 25th anniversary gala in 2012, establishing the “Debby Jannotta and Shirley Jaffee CFE Teacher of the Year Award” in honor of their collective contributions to the organization. We are grateful to have had Debby as a member of our CFE family for over 25 years. She was always one of our biggest advocates and cheerfully recruited volunteers and donors along the way. She will be dearly missed. Her passion and legacy will continue to live on, however, through the work CFE does each and every day.

Study Group Program Chicago Foundation for Education Study Groups bring together PreK-8th grade CPS educators (“Team Members”) to learn effective teaching methods from their expert peers (“Coaches”). Coaches are identified each spring, and then a catalog of Study Group offerings is shared with teachers across the district. Potential Team Members review the catalog and rank their top choices through an online application process. Once Team Members have been selected, their Coaches facilitate a minimum of 15 hours of cooperative learning with the group. During meetings, Team Members share strategies, support each other through implementation, and adapt teaching methods for optimal efficacy across classrooms. Peer feedback and reflection on progress are hallmarks of the Study Group process. Collaboration is essential, allowing teachers to share suggestions and form a network of professionals working toward similar goals. This year, CFE awarded 255 teachers the opportunity to participate in 35 Study Groups led by 37 teachers. This year’s Study Groups included Next Generation Science in the Elementary Classroom, Step Out of the Workbook with Hands-On Math, and Inspiring Robust Independent Reading for All Students.

Andrea Moffat, a 2nd grade teacher at Salazar ES in Old Town, led the school-based Study Group Integrating Common Core Practice Standards into Everyday Math, which focused on examining Common Core Practice and Content Standards for Math. The group sought to strengthen her school’s current program to include more critical thinking in mathematics. Andrea led her group in analyzing the Standards and identifying areas on which to focus at each grade level. Together, the group implemented more discussion-based mathematical problem solving in the classroom and worked to differentiate instruction to each student’s area of need.
Eslavia Garza, a 3rd grade teacher, joined Andrea Moffat’s school-based Study Group to exchange ideas and share experiences with her Team Members to enrich the delivery of mathematics instruction at Salazar ES. It was a school-wide goal to align the curriculum with the Common Core Standards, and Eslavia was looking forward to working with colleagues from her school to achieve this goal. They explored classroom activities for their diverse student population and found the best resources for their unique students. Eslavia enjoyed participating in the supportive network of professionals at her school.

Small grant program Chicago Foundation for Education Small Grants fund the implementation of classroom and school-wide curricular projects that respond to the specific academic, social, and emotional needs of a specific student population. Grants of up to $600 are available to fund books, supplies, field trips, or any other items that will deepen student engagement and promote active learning. Each application is evaluated by a minimum of three CFE volunteers who use a standardized rubric to assess each proposal on its own individual merits. Last fall, CFE made 286 awards to 322 PreK-8th Grade CPS teachers. These Small Grant recipients utilized their awards to reach 18,527 students with projects such as It’s All About Balance: Hands-On Equations in Math, Sensory Shelters for Special Learners, and Diving into Different Cultures through Shared Reading. After implementing their projects, many teachers had the opportunity to disseminate their ideas by presenting at CFE’s Annual Teachers as Leaders and Learners Workshop and participating in CFE’s Study Group Coach Program.
Small Grant Teacher Spotlight Dawn McCarthy, a kindergarten teacher at McPherson ES in Lincoln Square, used her CFE Small Grant funds for her project Kindergarten Scientists Research, Observe, and Collect Tadpole Data! She applied for the grant with fellow kindergarten teacher Amy O’Connor. Together, they were able to purchase magnifying glasses, books, and journals to implement a science unit for their curious kindergartners. Dawn’s students used scientific inquiry while conducting research about their tadpoles. This hands-on learning project increased her students’ English Language Learner skills, content vocabulary, and academic confidence.

Action Research Leadership Institute Action Research is a systematic process that teachers use to analyze the effectiveness of their instruction through data collection, evaluation, and reflection. Chicago Foundation for Education’s Action Research Leadership Institute (ARLI) has been hailed by grant-winners as the “best professional development experience [they] have ever had”. Over the course of the school year, 14 exceptional ARLI Fellows collected data in their classrooms, examined the efficacy of specific instructional strategies, documented student achievement, and reflected upon their practice. The program includes more than 45 hours of collaborative learning facilitated by a university advisor and supported by two Senior Fellows. Upon completion of the program, Fellows shared their findings and resulting policy recommendations with their colleagues, friends, and family during final presentations. The outcomes of a teacher’s Action Research inquiry have the potential to impact a classroom, a school, or an entire district.
Action Research Fellow Spotlight Ricky Tang, a technology teacher at Haines ES in Chinatown, was awarded a Fellowship to research how a blended learning model for 7th grade students would help them learn more effectively. He collaborated with multiple teachers to create individualized, differentiated learning units for science and math lessons. He then analyzed students’ self-recorded progress reports, subjectarea assessments, and his own observations. He ultimately found that students participating in the blended learning unit obtained higher testing scores than students not participating. Along with other policy recommendations, he believes schools should mandate technology use as part of the curriculum toolkit.

Fund for Teachers Program Chicago Foundation for Education Fund for Teachers (FFT) Fellowships provide powerful travel opportunities for professional renewal and growth. FFT experiences allow teachers the chance to focus on increasing academic achievement, global awareness, and cultural sensitivity in students. In partnership with the national Fund for Teachers organization, CFE awarded 30 Fund for Teachers Fellowships to 37 Chicago Public School teachers this past spring. Teachers with three or more years of classroom experience submitted proposals detailing how an FFT Fellowship would improve their instruction, as well as how the skills garnered during this experience would ultimately benefit their students, curricula, and school environments. 2014 Fellow experiences included examining mathematics instruction at five Japanese schools to replicate a successful model in CPS, pursuing guided field research in diverse biomes such as the Amazon rainforest and the Galapagos Islands to create an enriched science unit, and exploring the life and work of Nelson Mandela in South Africa to enhance a character education program through the lens of global equality.
Fund for Teachers Fellow Spotlight Kat Henry, a special education teacher at Pulaski ES in Logan Square, earned a FFT Fellowship to travel to Aarhus, Denmark, one of the world’s “happiest cities” to inspire her inner-city Chicago students. She created a documentary and developed an International Baccalaureate school partnership so that her class could communicate with students around the world. Recognizing the importance of integrating character education into the greater student curriculum, Kat set out to develop her special education students as global learners. Her students have since demonstrated growth in social-emotional skills such as openmindedness, communication, self-reflection, and cultural awareness.
