UCLA ANDERSON SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, NET IMPACT CHAPTERS, AND CFGC COLLABORATE TO DEVELOP A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
C
FGC is committed to developing innovative plans and partnerships to ensure that community mental health services are available for children and families!
The UCLA Anderson School of Management and Net Impact Chapters have collaborated with CFGC to help develop our business plan for our pilot social enterprise. The project launched on November 18, 2013. A social enterprise is a mission driven, revenue generating business that applies market-based strategies to achieve an Environmental and/or Social (EcoSocio) purpose. This partnership supports our 2013 - 2015 strategic plan goals to broaden our services and programs, and ensure financial sustainability. UCLA’s Net Impact Chapter along with Net Impact Los Angeles Chapter and Profit Impact + Partners are providing consulting services to include market research, financial analysis and developing a business plan. By forming a social enterprise focused on mental healthcare, CFGC is positioning itself to enhance mental health outcomes, improve the quality of life for more children and families, and to raise the socio-economic status of our communities.

FOUR TIPS FOR SAFELY TAKING AND STORING MEDICATIONS
1. Stay hydrated. 2. Keep medications in a cool, dry place. 3. Take medications at the same time each day to avoid
forgetting doses, or set reminder alarms on your smart phone. 4. Don’t stop your medication or change the dosage
without first consulting your doctor.

hen prescribed appropriately by a psychiatrist and taken as directed, medication may reduce or eliminate troubling psychiatric symptoms, improve daily functioning, transform families and even save lives. Psychiatry Services at CFGC offer psychiatric evaluation, medication management and information about mental health diagnoses to more than 500 children and young adults. We believe strongly that medication is only one component of an overall mental wellness plan, and we work side-by-side with the treatment team of CFGC’s therapists, behavior specialists, teachers and family advocates to produce the best, long-term outcomes possible. Determining whether or not a child would benefit from medication requires thorough evaluations, individualized assessments and professional expertise. Before recommending any medication, our psychiatrists conduct detailed diagnostics, which may require consultation with primary care physicians and treating therapists, review of previous records and additional medical or psychological testing. For many young people, CFGC is the only place they have access to medications that treat depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, trauma or other disorders. We are proud to offer psychiatric services that enable youth living with mental health issues a chance to live full, happy and productive lives. Alpa Patel, MD Director of Psychiatric Services

CFGC PREPARES FOR HEALTH CARE REFORM
S
trong care coordination is one of the principles of Health Care Reform. CFGC’s Community Resource Services (CRS) employs case managers who routinely contact their clients’ medical providers to ensure coordination of care. When case managers meet with families, they focus on linkage to a primary care doctor, the importance of preventative care and education on exercise and good nutrition. Case managers ensure that all clients have a primary care doctor and attend their annual preventive check-ups. When clients have medical issues, case mangers accompany families to their medical appointments and work closely with their treating doctors to ensure the best possible care coordination. CFGC’s case managers also make sure that families attend all followup appointments by problem solving the barriers that can arise, such as limited access to transportation and lack of understanding of the importance of healthcare. As we move towards healthcare reform, CFGC will work hand-in-hand with the doctors that treat our clients to ensure strong care coordination, which can increase positive outcomes. Donna Venezio, LCSW Director, Community Resource Services
CFGC TO BECOME CERTIFIED ENROLLMENT ENTITY FOR COVERED CALIFORNIA
C
FGC has a big role to play in the new healthcare landscape. Our agency has just received a grant from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to expand medical coverage in our area. Also, our organization is in the process of becoming a Certified Enrollment Entity for Covered California. By December, staff from CFGC’s Community Family Center in Northridge and the Palmdale office will be trained to help community members find and enroll in the Covered California health insurance plan that best meets their needs. This free service is not only available to CFGC clients, but also to anyone in the community who needs help navigating California’s new healthcare exchange. Cristina Solanet CFC Division Manager

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: DONNA SCHWARZBACH AND DAVID GORDON
D
onna Schwarzbach and David Gordon’s commitment to CFGC started in 1986, placing them among our agency’s most loyal supporters. Donna started volunteering a few hours each week to tutor kids at the agency, which was then called the San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Center. That same year, Donna started organizing yearly toy drives for CFGC’s young clients, which continue to this day. Donna and David have family connections to CFGC. Their cousins, Reggie, Joe and Sari Scheer, are all former Board Chairs and long-term supporters of the agency. Elaine Bercy, another cousin, also served as Board chair. Donna joined CFGC’s Board of Directors in 1987. She was a tireless Board member, serving on the Executive Committee and chairing the Nominating Committee, Development Committee, and Community Relations Council. Donna served on the Board until 2002, and she is now a member of CFGC’s Emeritus Board. Donna and David have generously given to CFGC throughout the years. Recently, Donna and David made a multi-year pledge to CFGC, which will support programs and services for children and families over the next four years. This long-term commitment to community mental health services is greatly valued by our agency and the thousands of people we serve. Donna and David’s dedication to the community and giving spirits come from the philosophy – it takes a village to raise a child. “We both grew up in the Valley and we raised our children here,” Donna said. “The Valley is our village, and we are just two of its members. We all benefit when we take care of our children.”
