ALT:UR ATTITUDE COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT - PAINTING A POSITIVE MESSAGE

E

veryone at CFGC’s first Alt:UR Attitude community engagement project on January 31st became an artist for positive change. Community members rolled up their sleeves, picked up paint brushes and created murals with anti-bullying messages on the walls at Sutter Middle School in Winnetka. The murals feature words and images that encourage students to respect and appreciate differences, develop empathy for peers, understand the benefits of diversity and find healthy ways to resolve conflict. More than 250 people participated in our Alt:UR Attitude project, including Sutter Middle School students who did their part to make their campus a safe and encouraging place to learn and grow. Along with mural painting, Alt:UR Attitude offered a community health resource fair, assistance for those signing up for Covered California and food. Alt:UR Attitude was supported by our Gang Reduction Youth Development (GRYD) program and school-based services at Sutter Middle School. Our services aim to reduce gang violence by promoting positive youth development. CFGC programs address the root causes of bullying and provide mental health programs that treat young people at risk for displaying bullying behavior, as well as those who have experienced harassment or violence by their peers.

4 FACTS ABOUT ADOLESCENT DEPRESSION

A

bout 11% of adolescents are affected by depression, a serious mood disorder. It is common for teens to be moody or sad from time to time. That is normal, and it doesn’t mean they have clinical depression. But if these feelings last for weeks or months, it may be time to contact a doctor or mental health care professional. Here are some facts about adolescent depression: 1. Medication alone has been shown to be LESS effective

than a combination of medication and therapy in treating adolescent depression.

2. Untreated depression has adverse effects, such as decline

in grades, social isolation and substance abuse.

3. Adolescents are more likely to respond to treatment if they

receive it early in their course of depression.

4. The National Institute of Mental Health is conducting

studies to find a way to reduce medication effect times from several weeks to hours in alleviating some of the most troubling symptoms of depression, such as suicidiality.

CFGC PROVIDES MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES FOR UCLA TELEHEALTH STUDY

C

FGC was selected as the mental healthcare provider for a UCLA study on the effectiveness of telehealth for delivering children’s mental health services. CFGC will collaborate with pediatricians at four Northeast Valley Health Corporation neighborhood health clinics. Two of the clinics will offer on-site videoconferencing sessions for children with CFGC psychiatrists. Patients of the other two sites will receive traditional psychiatric care at our existing mental health care sites. At the conclusion of the study, investigators will compare the outcomes for the two treatment models. Parents of prospective clients of the telehealth program will view a welcome video either at their pediatrician’s office or online on our website, which introduces them to mental health services. CFGC staff will also utilize videoconferencing to request critical information from parents prior to their child’s initial appointment with a therapist. If medications are necessary, participating children will only be required to attend an initial in-person evaluation with a psychiatrist at a CFGC site. All follow-up visits will be conducted by videoconference. If the study identifies positive outcomes from telehealth treatment, this new model could be implemented to make mental health treatment accessible to many more children in need. The telehealth model could (Continued on page 5)

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: HUB - GOOD BUSINESS WITH A FOCUS ON COMMUNITY

H

UB International Insurance Services, Inc. shines as an example of a business that gives back to its community. CFGC has worked with HUB’s Sr. Vice President Employee Benefits and Retirement Plans, Randy Rider and its Vice President Property and Casualty, Ryan Wunderlich to meet all its employee benefits, workers’ comp and liability insurance needs since 2010. Randy and Ryan provide excellent advice that enables CFGC to make the best choices to ensure insurance responsibilities are met while reserving maximum dollars for services for children and families. But, the relationship between HUB and CFGC is far from “all business.” HUB donates to CFGC through HUB GIVES, the company’s community service program. HUB further contributes by sponsoring employee holiday parties with raffle prizes and a photo booth, helping CFGC to thank staff. Randy and Ryan also make their own individual contributions to CFGC out of their personal commitment to supporting mental health services for children and families.

“The staff at CFGC are exceptional, and we want them to concentrate on doing what they do best,” Randy said. “So, we are always looking for ways to take worries about insurance issues ‘off their plate,’ so they can focus on helping those who need them most.”

Linda Drescher Community Advocate

“Yes, it’s amazing to see CFGC’s programs in action,” Ryan added. “CFGC is a safe place for kids and truly allows them to overcome issues and develop into who they really are.”
