Mission
The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines is a donor-driven public foundation whose purpose is to improve the quality of life in Greater Des Moines through philanthropy. Live…Give…Better Together
The Community Foundation works to improve the quality of life for all by connecting donors with their passions, fostering links between community organizations and convening local leaders to promote the common good…we’re simply better together. Join us in building a better community.
{4} Letter from the President
Dear Friends, Greater Des Moines is built on a strong foundation supported by you and other generous community leaders. As I enter my third year serving as president of the Community Foundation, I see the ripple effects of a sluggish economy and the needs created by financial unrest, natural disasters, unemployment and other challenges. No one is ready to declare we’ve returned to “normal.” Perhaps we need to embrace a new definition of normal that will make us stronger. Emerging from this economy forces our community to build social, financial and environmental capital and calls for more nonprofit transparency, heightened corporate responsibility and a high degree of civility. At the Community Foundation, we are at the table providing community leadership and support to many initiatives addressing immediate needs such as homelessness, and planning for future needs through a strategic community visioning process designed to successfully guide Greater Des Moines for years to come. I remain convinced that the Community Foundation is one of the single most important assets in the community because of our unique ability to touch, influence and support the full range of needs including education, health, environment and the arts. The Community Foundation leverages small donations through the efficiency of a larger giving engine, altering the fabric of our community forever. Thank you for joining us in this work and for caring about the future of our community. We are better together.

Capital Crossroads
A Vision for Greater Des Moines & Central Iowa Greater Des Moines and Central Iowa is at an important crossroads. The region has vibrant neighborhoods, a strong business community, dynamic arts and recreational attractions and a desirable quality of life. But the region also has its challenges. The time is right to take advantage of opportunities and address challenges through a clear vision and plan for Iowa’s capital region. The Community Foundation and the Greater Des Moines Partnership are collaborating with local government, education, health care, business and community leaders on a strategic community and economic development planning process to create a shared vision and strategic plan for Greater Des Moines and Central Iowa. This process will result in the development of a new five-year vision strategy for the region.
Tri-Chairs Angela Connolly, Polk County Supervisor; J. Barry Griswell, Community Foundation; and Cara Heiden, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, are leading the effort with community steering committee input and robust community participation. A formal plan will be released in 2011. “The quantitative and qualitative research will lead to a clear understanding of the region’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and competitive standing,” said Martha Willits, president and CEO of the Partnership. “The future vitality of our region is due in large part to our ability to develop and sustain a healthy economy, a ready workforce, educational opportunities, a strong human services sector and vibrant arts and cultural offerings.” Capital Crossroads is supported through resources from Bravo Greater Des Moines, Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Greater Des Moines Partnership, Iowa State University, Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino and United Way of Central Iowa.
Better Together
Creating Community through Civility Speaker Series “Often winning or losing isn’t most important. It’s the integrity of the fight that is usually more consequential than the outcome of any issue.” Jim Leach, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and former Iowa Congressman, kicked off the Better Together—Creating Community through Civility speaker series with these inspirational words. The Community Foundation, Character Counts In Iowa, Drake University and Interfaith Alliance of Iowa partnered to create the series with the belief that civility is an integral part of strengthening our community. “We are working to increase awareness and the importance of character and civility in our state,” said Scott Raecker, executive director of Character Counts In Iowa. “Civility is easy when like-minded people are in agreement. The Better Together speaker series can help equip us for those challenging times when disagreement takes place among individuals who do not think alike.” Bill Bishop, author of The Big Sort, and Dr. P.M. Forni, professor at Johns Hopkins University and author of Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct, were also featured in the series.

Supporting the Community The Community Foundation supports long-term, innovative, community-building projects and responds to immediate community needs. From managing donations for nonprofit capital campaigns, assisting in disaster recovery and supporting emerging community initiatives, the Community Foundation actively engages in projects that improve quality of life for all in Greater Des Moines. Recent projects include:
The Principal Riverwalk Lighted, landscaped public spaces, world-class public art, unique pedestrian bridges and pathways that connect 300 miles of Central Iowa trails all define The Principal Riverwalk. The project represents a unique private-public partnership that is funded through federal, state and local government sources along with contributions from individuals and corporations, with a lead gift and overall coordination by the Principal Financial Group®. The Community Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor for the project, accepting contributions, paying vendors and facilitating the purchase of commemorative bricks along the Riverwalk. The Community Foundation’s involvement allows donors to receive charitable deductions for this community-building project.
Des Moines Arts Festival Artist Relief Fund The 2010 Des Moines Arts Festival was met with great success, but many of the artists were affected by evening storms that damaged their booths and artwork. To support these artists, the Des Moines Arts Festival set up a fund at the Community Foundation to accept donations for repairs, allowing artists to continue their participation in festivals in Des Moines and around the country.
Gray’s Lake Park & Meredith Trail While taking a stroll around Gray’s Lake, passersby may notice plaques on the pedestrian bridge. These plaques in honor of friends, family or businesses are purchased through the Community Foundation. Because the Community Foundation is the fiscal sponsor for Gray’s Lake, donors who purchase plaques or make outright gifts to the project can receive charitable deductions for their donations. The Community Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor for many community initiatives including the Des Moines Regional Skatepark, Clare & Miles Mills Rose Garden, Restoration Ingersoll and the South Side Revitalization Partnership. Across Link’s spectrum of services, the new facility will allow service for up to 600 additional people each year. “ The Community Foundation’s Leadership Grant provides extra dollars outside of our normal funding stream for more efficient operations in a newer facility. {18} Donor Impact
The Power of Endowment Planting a seed today will grow giving forever. What is an endowment? By establishing an endowment at the Community Foundation today, a donor plants a seed that will grow to benefit the community forever. The endowment is invested over time. Earnings from the endowment are used to make gifts to the charities of the donor’s choice to address community needs. The endowment, and all future earnings from the endowment, is a permanent source of community capital, fostering good work today and in the future.
Legacy and stability Donors who establish endowments can make a difference in their community during their lifetimes and provide gifts that last forever. Grants will continue to be made in the name of the fund established so a donor’s charitable wishes are preserved. Leaders of nonprofit organizations may also look to the Community Foundation to hold their endowments because they know having a constant source of funding helps them respond to emergency needs as well as plan for the future and sustain the important work they do.
Giving experts When donors work with the Community Foundation to achieve their charitable goals, they benefit from the expertise of experienced, local staff. The Community Foundation matches donors with community causes they care deeply about and offers extensive knowledge about local charitable organizations and emerging community needs, helping donors make informed and impactful decisions about giving. The Community Foundation provides professional fund management and investment expertise. The ability to combine funds into a professionally managed portfolio allows the Community Foundation to access diverse investment opportunities.

Ensuring Support for the Future Sharon S. & Kyle J. Krause
Sharon S. and Kyle J. Krause are strong believers in community and charitable giving. As founding members of the Community Foundation’s Leadership Circle and members of the LifeTown Legacy® Society, they lead by example. They provided a $40,000 match for gifts to the Community Foundation’s Better Together Fund. This match leveraged gifts and pledges totaling $118,000. “Sharon and I have a passion for philanthropy and channel much of our giving through the Community Foundation,” Kyle, Kum & Go president and CEO, said. “The Community Foundation looks at all needs in the community and collaborates with different groups to find positive, comprehensive solutions.” Through the Better Together Fund, the Community Foundation plays a key role in providing significant leadership funding to projects that strengthen Greater Des Moines. “The Community Foundation knows the pulse of our community and stays in tune with issues, gaps and opportunities,” Kristi Knous, vice president of the Community Foundation, said. “This generous community gift allows us to continue building the endowment that will support the current and future needs of our community.”
Taking the Longview Barbara & David Hurd
When David Hurd was 25 years old he heard a quote from philosopher and longshoreman Eric Hoffer that stuck with him—maintenance is the bedrock of civilization. Some 40 years later during a trip to China, he and his wife Barbara recalled Hoffer’s words. They became inspired to support the development of the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens and ensure its sustainability. Barbara and David established an endowment at the Community Foundation to preserve the beauty and integrity of the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens of the Chinese Cultural Center of America. The endowment supports care and capital improvements for the gardens. “Des Moines is quickly becoming a world-class community,” David said. “The Asian Gardens honor Governor Ray and inspire world peace. This endowment ensures the garden’s building and grounds will be maintained so it will continue to be a place people really enjoy visiting.” Mike Simonson, vice chair of the Chinese Cultural Center of America, said, “Thanks to the Hurd’s generous gift, the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens commemorate for future generations the efforts of the Rays and all who responded to the call of bringing thousands of Southeast Asians to the heartland. We are forever enriched by their vision and generosity.” About the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens of the Chinese Cultural Center of America The Chinese Cultural Center of America – Partnership for peace and prosperity with East Asia – developed the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens. The gardens feature a Chinese imperial-style pavilion and honor the compassion of former Iowa governor Robert D. Ray, who helped thousands of Asians start a new home in Iowa during the 1970s and 1980s. These gardens not only highlight the importance of diversity in the community and acknowledge the significant contributions that Asian Americans have made to Iowa, but also serve as lasting monuments honoring Governor Ray’s visionary moral leadership and humanitarian outreach.

Creating Stability with Endowments Central Iowa Shelter & Services
Executive Director of Central Iowa Shelter & Services (CISS) Tony Timm says his organization started out “providing a bed and a meal” to the homeless but is growing into an organization providing much more. CISS is undergoing a $14.5 million capital campaign to build a new facility that will provide support services in a space five times larger than the current facility, nearly double the amount of beds and offer 24-hour access to better serve the homeless in the Greater Des Moines area. As part of the capital campaign, CISS is raising $2 million to establish a permanent endowment at the Community Foundation. Tony says the yearly distributions back to CISS will help plan for the future and provide funding to offset operating expenses. “This endowment builds financial stability. When the economy tumbles, the ability of donors to give goes down, but the need increases. Endowments help balance the ups and downs,” Tony said. Tony believes the difficult economy has made people more aware of those in need in the community and more thankful and appreciative of what they have. “People are looking for new ways to give, whether with their time or through monetary donations. This endowment allows donors to have a lasting touch and support this community past their lifetimes,” Tony said.
Local Givers with International Perspective Deval & Yogesh Shah
Dr. Yogesh (Yogi) Shah, associate dean for global health at Des Moines University, says medical students who travel with him to underdeveloped countries leave thinking about the help they will give others and return with the feeling they have received much more than they have given. Yogi views his giving the same way. Yogi and his wife Deval started their fund at the Community Foundation to create a legacy of giving, support their community and teach the importance of giving to their children. “We saw the value the Community Foundation has in Greater Des Moines. It’s a donor-driven and quality-minded organization that provides long-term value for the community,” Yogi said. The Shahs, who both grew up in India, plan to focus their giving on education and expanding local knowledge of developing countries. “The more we know about other cultures, the more we understand how similar we are,” Yogi said. “This understanding will make us better global citizens.”

Leadership Circle Community Foundation Leadership Circle members have created a substantial endowment that supports projects or causes that provide long-term community impact and address the most critical needs in Greater Des Moines. Leadership Circle donors pledge $2 million through initial contributions and deferred gifts. The circle recently supported workforce development and education through grants to the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families and the Des Moines Public Charter School. Leadership Circle members include Sunnie Richer & Roger Brooks, Suzie Glazer Burt, Patty & Jim Cownie, Michele & Barry Griswell, Charlotte & Fred S. Hubbell, Sharon S. & Kyle J. Krause, Jill & Mark Oman and Emily & Fred Weitz. “The Community Foundation is a leader in improving quality of life and is uniquely positioned to respond to community needs now and in the future,” Charlotte and Fred Hubbell said. “The most beneficial dollars for the Community Foundation are those that provide flexibility to address emerging needs.”
Maddie’s Circle Maddie’s Circle honors the life and legacy of beloved community leader Maddie Levitt. Circle members donate $1,000 per year for two years. All gifts are matched by the Maddie’s Circle Fund held at the Community Foundation. Mentors help group members discover their passions by sharing the wisdom and experiences they learned from Maddie and through their own charitable giving. Members of the inaugural Maddie’s Circle include Jenene Armstrong, Teri Button, Darcy Darrah, Nancy Dop, Meg Fitz, Jeanne Low, Laura Miller, Jean Duffy Ulrichson and Randi Woods. I have enjoyed getting to know the talented women who make up our circle as well as the wonderful mentors who have devoted their time and expertise. This next year will be very exciting as we put our plans into action and partner with the Young Women’s Resource Center.”
Great Ways to Give Continuing a Legacy | Linda Carter-Lewis “My late husband Larry Carter dreamed of providing financial assistance to African-American students seeking higher education. Our fund at the Community Foundation will continue his legacy and make a difference in the lives of African-American students for many years to come. I am honored and committed to carry out his dream and tradition of giving through this scholarship fund.”
Celebrating a Milestone | Mr. Meier The Power of We Giving Circle Teree Caldwell-Johnson, CEO of Oakridge Neighborhood Services, is launching a giving circle for African-American women. “We have great opportunity to identify those women who want to pool their time, talent and treasure and make a difference in our community,” she said. “Creating a sustainable movement will allow us to have impact in the future.”
“After teaching at Studebaker Elementary School on Des Moines’ south side for over 20 years, I decided to use my retirement as an opportunity to give back to students who have given me so much. My fund at the Community Foundation benefits Des Moines Lincoln Dollars for Scholars and supports collegebound students who attended Studebaker Elementary. These dollars make college more attainable for them, and it is with great satisfaction that I give back to the Studebaker community.”
Cultivating Family Philanthropy | Pat Noyce “Last Thanksgiving I asked my grandchildren what they would support if they could give money to any nonprofit organization. I felt this could be a way to help them understand the importance of giving back. The ideas that came from this discussion were good and varied. Some ideas were new to me but very worthy. My children and I used the Richard & Patricia Noyce Fund at the Community Foundation to support the charities we discussed. I hope to do this in future years and start a worthwhile family tradition.” Left: 2010 Recipients of the Larry W. Carter Scholarship Middle: Studebaker Elementary School Right: The Noyce Family

LifeTown Legacy Society
LifeTown Legacy® Society Members
Everyone has a “LifeTown”—the place where families are raised, business careers pursued and lasting friendships developed. The Community Foundation’s LifeTown Legacy® Society provides a way for donors to give back to the community which has been so important in shaping their lives. Become a member of the LifeTown Legacy® Society by creating a permanent endowment at the Community Foundation or making a planned gift through any of the following options: charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, gifts of cash or appreciated assets, gifts designated in a will or estate plan or gifts through a life insurance policy, IRA, 401(k) plan or real estate. A LifeTown Legacy® gift provides substantial tax benefits while providing perpetual funding to donors’ favorite charities.
Myrt Levin Myrt Levin grew up hearing her dad say, “Anything I have given to charity I have never missed.” Influenced greatly by her parents and grandparents, who were lifelong residents of Des Moines, Myrt established the Jack & Myrt Levin Family Fund at the Community Foundation to receive gifts from her will to benefit the local charities of her choice. “Des Moines is a town where you can make a difference with your giving,” Myrt said. “It’s a comfortable feeling to know that through this fund, our hard work is going to continue.”

Giving Experts Community Foundation staff members are knowledgeable about nonprofit organizations, local needs and giving opportunities. Donors are encouraged to consult with a Community Foundation giving expert to discuss charitable goals and create a giving plan.
DonorCentral This online tool allows donors to view their fund activity, grantmaking history, fund balances and fund statements. Donors can also make grant recommendations from their funds and research nonprofit organizations through DonorCentral. A unique login name and password for each donor ensures security and confidentiality.
Online Giving Donors may establish their own charitable funds online by accessing a secure form, and they can contribute to a fund online anytime.
Charitable Investment Partners Recognizing the importance of relationships established between donors and their trusted professional advisors, the Community Foundation created the Charitable Investment Partners program. This program allows donors to establish funds at the Community Foundation while their assets are managed by their preferred professional advisors. Donors gain access to all services the Community Foundation offers including maximum tax benefits, Endow Iowa Tax Credits, expert philanthropic guidance and flexible giving options. The Community Foundation accepts a variety of gifts including cash, appreciated stock, real estate and other assets. The Community Foundation continually develops new relationships with financial institutions, professional advisors and donors interested in this program. Current Community Foundation Charitable Investment Partners include BTC Capital Management (an affiliate of Bankers Trust), D.M. Kelly & Company, Foster Group, Graystone Consulting (a division of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney), Miles Capital, Syverson Strege & Company, Wealth Enhancement Group, Wells Fargo Bank and West Bank. “ At Wealth Enhancement Group, we use a unique values-based approach to comprehensive financial planning. Many of our clients have selected philanthropy or helping others as one of their top values, and working with the Community Foundation helps execute what is important to our clients. Wealth Enhancement Group, along with many of our clients, wants to be able to give back to the communities where we live and work, whether through volunteerism or through donations, and the Community Foundation is an excellent partner in helping us achieve that objective. We’re pleased to have the Community Foundation as our partner because of their longterm commitment to our community.” —Jim Sandager Senior Vice President - Financial Advisor Wealth Enhancement Group
{30} Statewide Philanthropy
Affiliate Funds The Community Foundation provides technical, fiscal and administrative expertise for over 250 affiliate funds across the state of Iowa. These affiliates build permanent charitable funds that serve the needs of their communities now and in the future. Resources are raised within a community or county and held by the Community Foundation. As an affiliate’s Family of Funds grows, it may include additional funds created by the affiliate itself and new funds created by other organizations or individuals who see the value of partnering. Grants from funds are distributed upon the recommendation of local leaders. Since 2005, Community Foundation affiliates have generated over $32 million in charitable gifts and granted over $13 million to charitable organizations within their local communities.
Green colored counties are Community Foundation affiliates. *Community affiliate fund within county
Impact Across Iowa Community Foundation affiliates are leaders in strengthening their communities and making a difference for those in need. Working together, this statewide network improves quality of life in local communities and throughout Iowa.
Socks that Care Foundation in Mitchell County “The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines’ relationship with the Foundation for the Enhancement of Mitchell County is helping our local nonprofit organizations. The Socks that Care Foundation directs the charitable efforts of Fox River Mills, manufacturer of performance socks and handwear including the famous Original Rockford Red Heel® Monkey Sock. The Fox River® Annual Benefit Sock Sale attracts over 8,000 people from across the country and sells over 100,000 pairs of socks to support local service organizations such as the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions Club as a way to give back to Fox River’s community, neighbors and employees in Osage, Iowa.” —Becky Lessard, Socks that Care Foundation Chair
Story County Community Foundation “The Story County Community Foundation is working to reduce poverty by increasing microenterprise opportunities that benefit our county through funding from the Iowa Microenterprise Assistance Project grant. This grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines has allowed us to strategically address entrepreneurship, establish an economic development endowment and convene roundtables about community issues including affordable childcare and agricultural-based businesses.” —Suzy Shierholz, Story County Community Foundation President
West Des Moines Community Enrichment Foundation “Since becoming an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines in 2007, nearly $100,000 has been raised to benefit the West Des Moines community. Our support of the City of West Des Moines Department of Human Services provides transitional housing in our community, and we’ve awarded multiple scholarships to talented young leaders for participation in the West Des Moines Leadership Academy. We’re embarking on an exciting new project to improve recreational activities at the West Des Moines Teen Center including a state-of-the-art climbing wall.” —Steve Jacobs, West Des Moines Community Enrichment Foundation President
