LETTER TO OUR COMMUNITY
A COLLECTIVE SPIRIT OF GIVING AND SERVING RUNS DEEP IN OUR ROOTS. There are many examples in our recent history of neighbors rallying around a shared cause, churches collaborating to address human service needs, nonprofits stepping up to solve societal challenges, and generous individuals who support this work with gifts of time, talent, and treasure. It’s an honor to share a seat at the table with local leaders, nonprofit partners, donors, and community members who share our belief that where giving and serving thrives, community thrives too.
For over 70 years, CFHZ has been actively working to ensure our community has the charitable resources it needs to respond to pressing needs and promising opportunities today, tomorrow, and forever. The highlights of that work in 2023 are presented here in our annual report, with a focus on our mission of building the Community’s Endowment to support high-impact charitable projects, and helping donors achieve their charitable goals.
Our work to build the Community’s Endowment was bolstered by a $1.5 million estate gift in 2023. The anonymous donor disclosed their commitment during the Today. Tomorrow. Forever campaign launched in 2015, which raised awareness of the Community’s Endowment and the significance and long-term impact of estate gifts. We are immensely grateful to this donor for
choosing to support the Community’s Endowment with a legacy gift. Their resources, combined with the trusted gifts of many others throughout the years, help extend our reach and deepen our impact.
We are proud to share that last year, we crossed a major milestone by distributing over $1 million from the Community’s Endowment. Our grant program made positive, lasting impacts in the areas of housing, human services, youth, and education, to name a few. We also increased our investments to strengthen capacity across the local nonprofit sector, including vital leadership development programs.
The total impact of collective local giving in 2023 included $17.9 million in new gifts and $12.9 million in charitable grants from the Community’s Endowment and donor service funds combined. We are grateful for the trust of our more than 700 fundholders. We share a few of their stories in this report, and hope they inspire you as they have inspired us.
Our ability to give and serve is only possible with your partnership. Thank you for joining us to create a thriving community for all, Today, Tomorrow, and Forever.
Sincerely,
PATRICK CISLER | PRESIDENT/CEO TOM DEN HERDER | CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES

THE THOMPSON FAMILY
At 27 years old, Pat Thompson took a calculated step into business ownership when he moved his young family to Holland and established West Michigan’s first deep draw metal stamping company: Trans-Matic. Over 55 years later, the company remains family-owned and continues to thrive.
Pat’s choice to uproot his family was made partly out of necessity as the company he was working for in Illinois had been sold to a national conglomerate. However, the decision to make Holland their home was intentional. Pat had developed connections in West Michigan through his professional network and was impressed by the work ethic, the small-town feel, and the entrepreneurial spirit. There was also a small but active Catholic community which was ready to welcome them.
“THERE’S STILL NO OTHER PLACE I WOULD RATHER LIVE THAN HOLLAND, AND I’VE LIVED A LOT OF PLACES” PAT SAID. “MY FAMILY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN BORN AND RAISED HERE, BUT IT WILL ALWAYS BE HOME.”
The family lived frugally, investing all they had into the business. Pat’s business acumen, technical knowledge, and eye for recruiting talent allowed the company to grow, and by 1977 Trans-Matic broke ground on a new plant on 48th St. That facility doubled in size in 1998 to accommodate rising demand from their customer base.
Pat’s children, P.J. Thompson and Karen Groenhof, each contributed to Trans-Matic’s growth over the years. Karen was recruited by her father to implement a quality system across every shift and department. This gave her the opportunity to learn every aspect of the business and form relationships with the employees. P.J. returned from a job in North Carolina to work in Operations, Sales, and then Executive Management, and eventually succeeded his father as company President.
As Trans-Matic’s success grew, so did the family’s desire to give back to their chosen home of Holland/Zeeland. “We feel like to whom much has been given, much is expected,” said Karen. “Agencies that are fulfilling immediate needs, like food and shelter, are a priority for us. We also support projects that will enrich the community, like the ice rink and the aquatic center expansion.”
Fielding a large number of requests for charitable donations, Trans-Matic adopted a policy of rotating gifts. The company has about 90 organizations it supports, most of which receive a gift once every three years. A donations committee meets quarterly to review requests and make giving decisions.
vocational training, Grant Me Hope’s capital project, and CASA/Step Up at Hope College. They were also the very first donors to the Foundation’s Emergency Human Needs fund during the pandemic.
“CFHZ is a great asset for individuals and companies who want to give back and need help to steer their charitable decisions,” said P.J. “Their expertise helps you create a sensible, equitable strategy for your philanthropy.”
The family relationship with CFHZ extends beyond financial gifts. Pat was honored with the Foundation’s Hall of Fame award in 2006, which
recognizes a person who has made a significant contribution to the quality of life in our greater Holland/Zeeland area in a variety of settings over time. P.J. serves on the Investment Committee, helping to guide the responsible stewardship of CFHZ’s assets.
P.J. said, “We have the best social service organizations. The talent and leadership are outstanding, and so is the innovation and collaboration that’s happening within the sector. We want to be broadly supportive of the nonprofit ecosystem and rotating our support helps meet that goal.”
To help organize some of their personal giving, the family established the Thompson Family Fund at CFHZ in 2015. They use their family fund to make some of their larger gifts, including support of the Thompson M-TEC center for
As the Thompsons contemplate their family and company’s legacy, a profound affection for their home-town shines through.
“HOLLAND/ZEELAND IS A GREAT PLACE, FILLED WITH GOOD PEOPLE, AND WE WANT TO BE AMONG THOSE GOOD PEOPLE,” SAID KAREN. “THAT’S AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO.”

RESPONSIVE GRANT
GRANT ME HOPE - THE ROCK PROJECT
In 2014, Helen Zeerip learned about six youth living in the woods behind a local business. The teens had aged out of foster care with nowhere to go. It came as a shock – Helen had been fostering and had also adopted from the foster care system – but she hadn’t realized the scope of the challenges facing kids who age out. In the United States, approximately 20,000 youth age out of the foster care system each year. Research shows those who did not find a permanent placement during their time in foster care are at higher risk of joblessness, substance abuse, incarceration, and homelessness.
“THESE KIDS ARE AGING OUT WITH NOWHERE TO GO, NO SUPPORT SYSTEM, AND QUITE FRANKLY, LITTLE TO NO HOPE,” said Helen. In response, she founded the nonprofit organization Grant Me Hope, whose mission is to find forever homes for foster youth before they age out. In the early years, the organization focused on raising awareness about the need for more adoptive homes – especially for preteens and teens who were closer to being exited from foster care – by creating professionally produced videos to highlight children searching for an adoptive family.
In the meantime, Helen continued to hear about local former foster youth who were ending up homeless. “IT WAS HEARTBREAKING. AS A COMMUNITY, WE HADN’T REDUCED THE NUMBER OF UNHOUSED FOSTER KIDS IN OUR OWN BACKYARD. I was, and continue to be, proud of the difference we make through our videos, but it was a clear sign we needed to do more.”
In the spring of 2021, Grant Me Hope launched a capital campaign to open a home for former foster youth. Their priority was to create a place for young men, as they face homelessness at a higher rate. Helen’s role as president of local
company Teddy’s Transport was invaluable, and many of her connections made sizable gifts. A supporter of Grant Me Hope bought and donated the use of the former Rock Island Restaurant building. Following an extensive renovation, this home became known as “The Rock.” It is the first of three homes that Grant Me Hope renovated and opened to expand housing options for former foster youth.
The Community Foundation supported The Rock project with a grant of $40,000 from our responsive grant program. These funds helped with initial operational costs, including hiring house parents who walk alongside residents, working on tasks of daily living while also helping them plan for the future. The Rock can house up to 16 young men at one time and each resident receives financial counseling and assistance with an eventual transition to independent living. They also have the option to access guidance on vehicle ownership and maintenance, parenting classes, Bible study, and more.
“OUR DREAMS BECAME A REALITY!” said Helen. “We were able to extend our mission and help create a brighter future for local former foster youth. We are immeasurably grateful for the community support, including the grant from CFHZ, that made this possible.”

Ruth used her various passions to give to others. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed making beautiful arrangements for her family and friends. She was an accomplished pianist and shared that gift by playing at various nursing homes to bring joy to others. She was one of the first campers over 75 years ago at Camp Geneva and continued to give back decades later by serving on their Board of Directors.
Ruth was a loving, compassionate and hard-working person, who instilled these values in her children and grandchildren. Ruth and her husband, Roger, named CFHZ as a beneficiary of their estate to help our community thrive.

PROACTIVE GRANT
WM MARRIAGE CENTER
MARRIAGE RESTORATION PROGRAM
EVERY MARRIAGE DESERVES HOPE. That’s the guiding principle of West Michigan Marriage Center (WMMC), a nonprofit organization founded by husbandand-wife team Scott and Betsy Nuismer. The Nuismers are licensed therapists who have dedicated themselves to helping increase the number of stable, healthy, and securely attached marriages in West Michigan.
“A HOST OF SOCIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDIES REVEAL ONE THING VERY CLEARLY: A STRONG AND HEALTHY MARRIAGE IS THE CENTER POINT OF A FOUNTAIN WHICH NATURALLY CASCADES DOWN TO HEALTHIER CHILDREN, HEALTHIER SCHOOLS, HEALTHIER WORKPLACES, AND HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES,” said Scott. “That’s why we are so passionate about providing highly effective marriage restoration services to all couples.”
Few factors are more critical to a child’s current and long-term well-being than the consistent presence of caring adults in their lives and a physically and emotionally safe environment. However, many children in our community experience their parents or primary caregivers struggling to provide stability for reasons ranging from the financial and logistical challenges faced by single parents, to the difficulty of creating consistent family routines for parents who work multiple jobs, the absence of a parent due to incarceration, or the difficulties of healthy parenting for individuals who experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Research has also shown that children who are experiencing ACEs in their home life are more likely to display destructive behaviors and struggle with their mental health.
CFHZ made a proactive grant of $40,000 to WMMC to support their Marriage Restoration program and extend scholarships for couples with financial barriers to

accessing therapy. Our proactive grants make targeted investments across issue areas that were identified by nonprofit partners and community leaders as key priorities for a thriving community. Included in those issue areas is increasing the consistency of a healthy parent or other caring adult relationship in kids’ lives.
WMMC’s Marriage Restoration program provides therapeutic services to couples whose relationship is experiencing a crisis, often on the brink of divorce. If parents can find a healthy path forward for their marriage, that can have a profound lasting impact on them and maintain consistency of a healthy parental relationship in kids’ lives. The program recognizes the vital role communication plays in sustaining healthy relationships. It incorporates Emotionally Focused Therapy, a modality that equips individuals with the skills to navigate conflict, be confidently vulnerable, and nurture empathy for their partner.
The grant made to WMMC also helps reduce barriers to participation in the Marriage Restoration program by helping fund scholarships for those with limited financial means. Many health insurance companies will not cover therapy when a relational problem (like marriage) is listed as the primary concern. In the most recent Ottawa County Community Health Needs Assessment, 66% of participants reported that an inability to afford out-of-pocket expenses was the most common barrier to accessing health care, including therapy.
“RESTORING MARRIAGES AND HELPING FAMILIES HEAL IS CRUCIAL FOR THE FUTURE SUCCESS OF OUR COMMUNITY,” said Betsy. “We are grateful for the support and trust from CFHZ as we extend our vision of hope and connection to couples in West Michigan.”
ODL, INC.
EMPLOYEE MATCHING FUND
When Cy Mulder opened Art Craft Novelty Shop in 1945, he had a few goals. He wanted to embrace his entrepreneurial spirit (and not have a boss!), support his family, and create products that made lives better. Eventually becoming Ottawa Door Lights (ODL), the company has thrived under the careful stewardship of three generations of the Mulder family—Cy, Larry, and Jeff.
Growing beyond its modest roots in Zeeland, ODL has facilities in Canada, Mexico, China, and the United Kingdom, as well as eight facilities in the US. The company relies upon its core values of Solid, Soft, and Risky to guide all aspects of the business, including culture, employee value, and growth. Solid includes a strong and inclusive workforce, quality manufacturing processes, and fiscal health. Soft means approaching communities, customers, and employees with compassion. Risky encapsulates the spirit of innovation and problem-solving that has driven ODL to become a leader in its industry.
A commitment to the community has been part of ODL’s corporate philosophy since the beginning. Jeff Mulder, who serves as Executive Chairman, explained that in recent years ODL has embraced the idea of philanthropy as something personal.
“ONE OF THE GREAT PARTS OF CHARITABLE ENGAGEMENT IS EXPLORING YOUR PASSIONS,” JEFF SAID. “THERE’S A SENSE OF FULFILLMENT IN IDENTIFYING HOW AND WHERE YOU WANT TO MAKE AN IMPACT.”
When asked about his personal giving philosophy, Jeff reflected on his father Larry’s leadership, including the Hope College Run/Bike/ Swim event ODL sponsored from 1978-1987 and hiking the Apalachin Trail with a youth group. “You would never catch me at these events!”, laughed Jeff. “My dad’s passions were way too hard for me!” Jeff found his connection with the Livestrong Foundation and their fundraising challenges. “Livestrong gave me energy in a way I hadn’t found with other charitable organizations,” Jeff said. It was around this time that ODL began to reevaluate its corporate giving structure.
“WE WANTED OUR CORPORATE GIVING TO FOCUS ON ALIGNING PASSIONS AND PRIORITIES FOR OUR TEAM MEMBERS,” SAID JEFF. “OUR EMPLOYEES’ CHARITABLE INTERESTS ARE DIVERSE, AND THEY EVOLVE AND CHANGE OVER TIME.”
The ODL, Inc. Employee Matching Fund was launched in 2017 and puts all the decision-making in the hands of employees. Team members’ financial contributions to nonprofit causes are matched 1:1 by ODL. Gifts of time are honored with a
$25 donation for each volunteer hour. The fund is administered by CFHZ, who has enjoyed a relationship with ODL since 1996 that includes support for the Community’s Endowment, and administration of a scholarship fund for the children of ODL team members.
Chad Potinsky, Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, has been participating in the Employee Matching Fund program to support his volunteer role as founding member, head coach and mentor of the Allendale Robotics program. The program has opportunities for K-12 students, inspiring them to get excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Chad’s dedicated volunteer hours have generated $10,000 in matching funds from the Employee Matching Fund each year. Those contributions helped the team to purchase computer equipment, a trailer, and machinery including 3D printers which helped them reach a new level of competitiveness.
“Tailoring the corporate giving program to everybody’s personal interests and passions is a great benefit. It doesn’t matter what your cause or organization is, ODL is there to help you,” said Chad. Jeff points to the Employee Matching Fund as an example of ODL’s Purpose – making lives better. “IT’S HOLISTIC,” he said, “IT HONORS THE VARIED WAYS IN WHICH OUR EMPLOYEES GIVE BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES THROUGH TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE, AND SUPPORTS THEM AS THE EXPERTS IN THEIR PERSONAL PHILANTHROPY.”

YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The Youth Advisory Committee is a platform for local students from area high schools to use their voices to shape our community. Members meet once a month during the school year for grantmaking, site visits to local youth-serving organizations, and to learn about community needs and philanthropy.
A Q&A WITH BROOKE LEWIS
Brooke Lewis joined the Youth Advisory Committee during the beginning of her sophomore year at Zeeland East High School. She graduated in June and plans to attend the College of William and Mary. In 2023, Brooke and her family established the Brooke Lewis Never Give Up Fund. This donor-designated nonprofit fund supports the Zeeland Education Foundation’s Never Give Up Program.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO JOIN YAC?
I was born with Vestibular Aqueduct Syndrome, which causes hearing loss and balance problems. Family, friends, medical professionals, and teachers (to name a few) have advocated and cared for me with deep empathy. I wanted to advocate for other kids by joining a group like YAC which empowers young people to use their voices and unique perspectives to shape the future of our community. I had no grantmaking experience; all I had was bright pink high tops, navy hearing aids, and the desire to make a difference in the world.
HOW HAS BEING PART OF YAC IMPACTED YOUR PERSONAL GROWTH?
It strengthened my leadership skills. It also helped me refine my personal definition of philanthropy and begin to picture how I can make an impact.
TELL US HOW YOUR DREAM TO ESTABLISH THE NEVER GIVE UP GRANT FUND CAME ABOUT. In fourth grade, my physical therapist challenged me to learn how to ski. At that point, I was working on day-to-day activities like walking without falling and balancing on one foot. So, the challenge was set, the plan was made, and I successfully skied at Cannonsburg! It changed my perspective. Obstacles are an opportunity, conquering them makes everything else suddenly seem possible.
This lit a fire in me to encourage other youth with disabilities or difficult life circumstances to try something that seems impossible to them. I knew many kids don’t have access to the resources that I did, and a charitable fund provides equitable access to opportunities. One Saturday at 4am, I began drafting a presentation, legal documents, and parameters for a fund. As soon as possible, I pitched it to my parents, and Dr. Brandi Mendham and Brandy Navetta at Zeeland Public Schools. I was serving on YAC, so opening the fund at the Foundation was a natural fit. It was one of the best in terms of flexibility and investment returns.
THE BROOKE LEWIS NEVER GIVE UP FUND SUPPORTS THE ZEELAND EDUCATION FOUNDATION’S ‘NEVER GIVE UP’ PROGRAM. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT IT?
Zeeland Education Foundation helps Zeeland Public Schools go above and beyond. My family and I were committed to giving youth of all economic circumstances opportunities to realize their potential and never give up on themselves. Zeeland Education Foundation will distribute $1,000 annually from the fund to help students with disabilities or challenging life circumstances try something they may feel is impossible. Hopefully leading them to experience personal growth and increased self-confidence. We have already helped four recipients this year! I’m excited to watch the fund grow and impact more kids each year.
MILLERKNOLL FOUNDATION STRENGTHENING OUR NONPROFIT SECTOR
In 2023, generous donors helped us reach a goal of $1.7M to our Strengthening the Nonprofit Sector campaign. This allowed us to increase our investments in the health of the local nonprofit ecosystem. The MillerKnoll Foundation contributed to the campaign and established the MillerKnoll Strengthening the Nonprofit Sector Fund. Their fund exists to equip nonprofit organization staff and volunteers with the tools necessary to provide equitable services and advance equitable outcomes.
Approaching their grants through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, the MillerKnoll Foundation funds projects globally in the communities where they live and work to design a brighter, more sustainable, and equitable world for all. The MillerKnoll Foundation’s professional team of grant makers includes President Linda Brand and Global Impact Managers Yah-Hanna Jenkins Leys and Ashley Rigby. Linda said, “As we evaluate grant requests, we look at the project’s reach and engagement of historically marginalized and excluded community members. We also look at what’s changed—both for the individuals impacted and within the community—as a result of the work of our partner organizations.”
MillerKnoll Foundation’s generous contributions helped fund both the DEI Leadership Cohort and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color)
Affinity Group offered by Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance. The DEI cohort is designed to enhance inclusive leadership, and foster inclusivity and belonging in nonprofit organizations and our community. The BIPOC Affinity Group creates a space for nonprofit staff of color to gather, network, and form trusted connections.
“Leaders of Color can increase an organization’s effectiveness and social relevance by introducing fresh perspectives and lived experience that enrich programming, broaden the organization’s reach, and deliver meaningful change,” said Linda.
While their fund is new, the MillerKnoll Foundation is enthusiastic about its impact. As our community competes globally for resources, their hope is the value of different lived experiences will become increasingly valuable to all organizations in our area. Linda shared, “WE ARE PROUD TO PARTNER WITH CFHZ AND INVEST IN THE HEALTH OF THE LOCAL NONPROFIT ECOSYSTEM. ENCOURAGING AND NURTURING DIVERSITY IS A KEY ELEMENT OF OUR COMMUNITY STRATEGY TO ATTRACT TALENT, MAINTAIN THE HIGH LEVEL OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION, AND ENRICH THE OVERALL QUALIFY OF LIFE FOR ALL WHO LIVE AND WORK IN THE HOLLAND/ZEELAND AREA.”
THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS!
We make every effort to ensure donor names are listed correctly. If you have a concern related to this list, please contact our office at 616-396-6590 or info@cfhz.org.
