SITE LOCATION
SITE CONTEXT
USING THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE RIO GRANDE RIVER VALLEY AS A DIAGRAM FOR THE PLACEMENT OF PROGRAM CAN CREATE A WIDE VARIETY OF INTERSECTING PROGRAM SPACES AND VISUAL STIMULI.
THE DIAGRAM CAN BE APPLIED IN PLAN AS WELL TO THE 3 PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS ALLOWING FOR THE INTERSECTION AND SEPARATION OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMS IN BOTH A SECTION AND PLAN. THIS ALLOWS FOR A DYNAMIC EXPERIENCE IN A STATIC CONDITION AND IN A CIRCULATORY EXPERIENCE.
FURTHER BREAKDOWN OF PROGRAM ELEMENTS ALLOWS FOR THE USER TO HAVE MULTIPLE PROGRAMMATIC EXPERIENCES WHILE MOVING THROUGH THE BUILDING. THIS CAUSES USERS TO VALUE THE “JOURNEY” RATHER THAN THE DESTINATION OF ONE INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMMATIC EXPERIENCE.
BECAUSE OF THE MULTIPLES LEVELS OF PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION AND THE RESULTING CIRCULATION PATHWAYS THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE MULTIPLE VISUAL CONNECTIONS FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER TO CREATE A MORE DYNAMIC EXPERIENCE AS ONE MOVES THROUGH THE SPACES AND TO BEGIN TO LET THOSE VISUAL QUEST BEGIN TO CREATE A SEQUENCE AND LAYERING OF SPACES WITHIN THE BUILDING

UNM MEDIA NEXUS
LOCATED IN THE HEART OF ALBUQUERQUE AND RIGHT ACROSS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO THE SITE IS SITUATED IN A VERY URBAN CONTEXT. THE SITE SITS ON AT THE INTERSECTION OF TWO MAJOR STREETS CENTRAL AVE AND UNIVERSITY BLVD. AS IT STANDS THE SITE IS CURRENTLY A PARKING LOT AND HOME TO THE UNIVERSITIES PARKING ENFORCEMENT BUILDING. THIS GIVES THE SITE A VERY BARREN FEEL, IT IS CAUGHT BETWEEN A VARIETY OF CONTEXTUAL “EDGES”. THE UNIVERSITY, VARIOUS RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL ZONES. ALL TRYING TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES WITHIN THE SITE BUT BEING UNABLE TO DO SO.

PROJECT LOCATION
THE SITE IS IN A CONSTANT STATE OF FLUX, AS SOON AS THE DAY BEGINS THE SITE BOUNDARIES BEGIN TO SHIFT, SLIDE, EXPAND, AND CONTRACT AROUND EACH OTHER. SINCE THE SITE IS A PARKING LOT MUCH OF THE FLUCTUATION IS DUE TO THE DENSITY OF TRAFFIC. THE SITE IS NEARLY STATIC FROM MIDNIGHT TO 8AM, BUT AS THEY DAY PROGRESSES THE SITE IS FILLED BY STUDENTS, SHOPPERS, AND RESIDENTS. THESE ARE THE DEFINING EDGES AROUND THE SITE. THIS FLUX GIVES THE SITE AN IDENTITY THAT IT IS OTHERWISE LACKING. EVEN THOUGH A LARGE POPULATION PASSES THROUGH AND AROUND THE SITE IT SEEMS TO BE WHOLE AND UNDISTURBED. THESE EDGES CREATE FRACTURES AND CRACKS AROUND THE SITE PIECES OF EACH EDGE CONTAINED IN ONE VOLUME. THE MEDIA NEXUS IS DESIGNED TO TAKE ALL THE PIECES OF COMPUTER MODELING, VIDEO PRODUCTION, SOUND EDITING, GRAPHIC DESIGN, AND ETC AND PUT THEM
