A Dress Code Primer Don’t know the difference between dressy casual and business casual? Not sure what to wear when the invitation says “black tie optional?” And just what does Chicago House mean by “Garden Chic attire” on the invitation to their annual Spring Brunch and Fashion Show? In case you didn’t know, “garden chic” is generally considered summer suits or khakis and navy blazers for men, and sundresses for women. If you’re not comfortable with such gender-specific dress codes, there’s no reason you can’t flip-flop them: sundresses for the men and khakis and navy blazers for the women.
Here’s a handy guide: White tie. Ultra-formal and rarely required, unless you’re attending a state dinner or a formal ball in London. For men: a black cut away tailcoat, white shirt and stiff wing collar, white waistcoat and bow tie. For women: a formal ball gown. Black tie. For men: a classic black or midnight blue tuxedo. For women: a long gown or cocktail dress. Black tie optional: For men: A classic tuxedo or a dark suit, white shirt and conservative silk tie, although it’s advisable to err on the side of formality with a tuxedo. For women: a long gown or cocktail dress. Creative black tie: For men: a black tuxedo mixed with a colored or patterned bowtie, cummerbund or vest. For women: a long gown, evening dress or dressy pant outfit, enhanced with dramatic color, patterns, or accessories.
Cocktail: For men: a dark suit and white shirt. For women: a short cocktail dress. Festive: For men: a sport coat and open collar shirt or a shirt with a festive tie. For women: a cocktail dress, dressy pants outfit or long skirt. Semi-formal: For men: A dark business suit. For women: a short dress or long skirt and top. Dressy-casual: For men: dress slacks and a sport coat or blazer with an open collar shirt or a sweater. For women: dressy pants outfit, a wrap dress/casual dress, a skirt and sweater. Business: For men: a business suit. For women: a skirt and jacket, simple dress or pants suit. Business casual: For men: a sport coat and open collar shirt, or khakis and a blazer. For women: slacks or a skirt with a sweater or shirt.
Warm weather black tie: For men: white or ivory dinner jacket, black trousers, white tuxedo shirt and black bow tie. For women: a long gown or cocktail dress, often with a resort feel. Garden chic: For men: khakis and a navy blazer or a summer suit. For women: a sundress or summer suit. goguidechicago.com
