My name is Charles Francis and I am a 1st Class Product Design Graduate from Wolverhampton University. Being fresh out of university this September I am eagerly seeking employment in the Design and Engineering sector to apply and further my skills as a designer.

MotorCycle Public Parking Solution

‘At present, no UK highway authorities appear to provide lockers or storage facilities for users to stow helmets, waterproofs and other equipment’ (DfT, Traffic Advisory Leaflet 2/02, 03/2002)

WHO?

WHAT?

WHERE?

WHY?

Motorcycle Commuters, Client is Council Officials

MotorCycle Security and Storage Device

Commuting destinations, eg: Town Centers, Train Stations

To promote motorcycle commuting enabling 3rd party benefits

Research Progression BRIEF: To design a motorcycle storage unit that allows for a single motorcycle to be kept safely within an enclosed environment with less fear of; theft, corrosion and interaction damage. The developed concept should be inclusive of emerging renewable technologies such as electronic transportation. Further than this the design must take into account the requirements of motorcycle users in regards to their motorcycle gear and accessories.

Market Analysis:

User Analysis:

Material Options:

Product Inclusivity:

Research government regulations on motorcycle parking requirements

Generate questionnaires to gather user requirments and concerns

Evaluate product environment and generate desirable material qualities

Utilise questionnaires to gather information on the spread of motorcycle product variation

evaluate existing parking solutions through site visits

Gather information on user accessories including numerical data

Analyse existing material finishes and concerns taken to promote safe use

Create user profiles to ensure the product functions ergonomically

Consider manufacturing techniques that compliment materials with desirable traits

Conduct ergonomic assessments on existing products

Research public furniture fixings and finishing trends

analyse existing solutions and evaluate product function Identify 3rd party impacts; problems and benefits Deduce any marketing opportunity and tailor design accordingly

Reach out to communities to gather further information

Assess impacts of use and ways to reduce wear

Research manufacturers of motorcycles to ensure product inclusivity Collect data on exisitng motorcycle measurements to define numerical constraints Analyse emerging renewable technologies and develop design requirements to suit future trends

Conceptualisation Description: After collating all the design requirements into a diagram a series of design concepts were generated. These designs all utilise different methods of securing a motorcycle and are all potential solutions to. However after evaluation against the original brief, a specific concept was chosen for development into a final solution. The chosen concept contained 3 major sections and, of the proposals, it was the cheapest to develop due to its simplicity. Each concept was individually analysed in regards to: Feasibility Cost Ergonomics Functionality In order to deduce the most fitting concept.

Form Development

Description: Once the method of securing the motorcycle had been decided upon the key sections of the product could be identified ready for form development; Locker Storage Section, Product Interface Housing and Securing Device. These sections became the building blocks and their juxtaposition was altered to create various forms. Once a solution with form similar to current street furniture was discovered, the product was developed further to better suit motorcycle types and ergonomic use.

Schofield Watch Design Competition

Analysing The Brief BRIEF: Design a mechanical wristwatch and send it to us in any format, sketched on a napkin, a photoshop mockup, a full 3D rendering, a rapid prototype or a fully working model. It does not matter. It will help if you specify materials, finishes and dimensions. Consider how we do things at Schofield, take a good look across our website and sign up to our weekly bulletin. You will need to consider all the details of your design and be able to justify the reasons of their inclusion - just looking good is not enough. Judging will be harsh and thorough, remember it is not about the money, it is about the glory. Good luck.

Competition is Open Internationally to any Aspiring Designers

Extensive Justification of Design Decisions Requested

Quick and Direct Visual Communication of Designs

Submission through the ‘Arts-Thread’ Website

Focus on Detailing to express the Design Decisions throughout the Project

Analyse Existing Material Finishes and Decern Desirable Traits Located on a Person’s Wrist therefore Consider; Wrist Strap Sizes, Watch Housing Diameter and Functional Access to the ‘Crown’ Consider the generated Customer Profile: What Environment is Familar to the Customer

Consider the prestige of the company and it’s history / future short-term direction Identify with avid followers of the brand to understand what it is that makes Schofield Desirable To deviate from the norm of ‘Light-Houses and Beards’ (taken from schofield website) Potentially to discover a new market area through deviation

Material and Finish Conceptualising Description: By analysing the keywords in the design brief it became apparent that what the client was looking for was an application of materials, used to define a customer market area and convey its company message through simplistic / uncluttered design.

Description: Schofield’s key expression is the phrase; ‘Carefully Curated to be Just Right’. By using the term ‘curated’ and making it integral to the design process, the importance of the project became the selection of materials, finishes and details that similarily differentiated the schofield brand. The moodboards shown depict (left to right); a customer profile, interesting forms relating to said customer and correlating material finishes. The variety that these images hold was then taken forward into the design process of designing a watch finish that met the design brief criteria. The customer in the profile could be described as: ‘a young country gentleman, looking to the future with a nod to the past’.

Design Development

Description: Shown above are a variety of watches designed from the moodboard images previous. Given the diversity of the finishes available it is no surprise that in total 20 options were detailed through to this stage of the design process. To narrow down the options the most attractive and directly influenced features were combined together into a final product. The benefit of this approach meant that any external influences could be cut out through the final stage of refinement. The final chosen product body shape was closely modelled on exisitng Schofield designs in order to maintain the brand identity and because a radical reform of design was not requested in the brief. Over the page is the final product presentation board and a marketing render.
