If you're getting close to graduating high school, considering changing majors, or even contemplating going back to school in new field altogether, you might be asking yourself: what is the best career for the future? In tough economic times, many jobs are being outsourced overseas, downsized, or simply eliminated. What career is immune to these pitfalls? Nursing. Nursing truly is the best career for the future. As advances in medicine continue to extend the human lifespan, more and more nurses are needed for a wide variety of positions in hospitals, personal care facilities, home-visitation associations, and schools. This is not a job that can be done by someone on another continent at a lower rate of pay. Skilled hands are needed to administer medications, assist in operating suites, and to oversee patient care. Nurses will always be needed, in vast numbers, as our population both expands and lives longer lives. Nursing is also immune to downsizing. After all, hospital administration cannot demand the same nurse who supervises the obstetrics department to also take the place of the nurse anesthetist in the operating room. A person cannot be in two places at the same time, and leaving one department without an overseeing nurse is a serious breach of hospital protocol. Also, the expertise and focused training involved makes it so that nurses are not always interchangeable. Nursing is the best career for the future because it is varied. There are many positions within the medical infrastructure that simply cannot be done without, no matter how tight the budget. Should a career in hospital nursing not suit your taste, personal care facilities and nursing homes have also become a hot marketplace for nurses. In some facilities, healthy and mobile elderly live in wards and only need a nurse to dispense their medication. In others, palliative care of terminal patients may be the norm. None of these positions can be eliminated. New residents will come in as those residing there depart. Nursing is the best career for the future because it allows each individual to tailor their career to their personal preference. A kindhearted, gentle soul may be too emotionally effected to work in terminal care any longer, but may adore working in pediatrics. With nursing, he or she will always have the option to make a change. In conclusion, nursing is the best career for the future on all fronts. Without fears of downsizing, outsourcing, or job elimination, a nurse is free to find their own niche in the world of medicine. Their skills will always be in demand and a secure financial future is assured upon successful graduation.
