LICENSING WITH LIZ SHAW
WHAT’S LEGAL? Liz Shaw starts her new Innsight column this month bringing you the latest must do’s and don’t for the upcoming months.
Those of you outwith Glasgow who wish to operate longer hours during the Games will more than likely have to apply to the relevant Licensing Board for extended hours. If you are looking to licence an outdoor area on a temporary basis for the two weeks duration of the Games, you will require an occasional licence. If you are hoping to licence an outdoor area permanently or add some form of entertainment which is not included in your existing licence, this will require an application to the Board for a Variation to the licence.
Hi everyone! I’m Liz Shaw, Iona Pub Partnership’s new Licensing Paralegal. Prior to starting with Iona Pub Partnership in October 2013, I was employed for 17 years by Police Scotland (formerly Strathclyde Police). I worked within different departments in the police including Personnel, Training and the Intelligence Bureau and for the remaining 12 years in the licensing department. Based at Govan and Cathcart Police offices in Glasgow, my responsibilities included processing all types of licence applications, attending Licensing Boards and liaising with Licensing Boards and Licensing Standards Officers and generally offering licence related advice to Police colleagues and the public. After 12 years working within the police licensing environment, I am now finding it interesting (and somewhat refreshing) dealing with licensing matters and generally seeing things, from the other side.

BE PREPARED
For events in 2014 which can have a positive impact on your business as well as provide a service to the public, such as... WORLD CUP - BRAZIL 2014 12th June till 13th July With some of the matches’ kick off time being 11pm (our time) those of you who show sport on TV may wish to consider applying for an extension to your hours to cater for this.
For example if you wish to show the opening ceremony or events of the Games on TV and the showing of TV is not currently included in your operating plan, you will require your licence to be varied. It can take months for a Board to process such applications and indeed has taken over a year in some cases. My advice is to act now.
PERSONAL LICENCE REFRESHER TRAINING
COMMONWEALTH GAMES 23rd July till 3rd August The Commonwealth games will create an influx of visitors to the areas surrounding the sport venues, in particular Glasgow. The games may seem a long way off but now is the time to start considering what extra licensing requirements you have. Glasgow Licensing Board may consider allowing on sales licensed premises additional hours during the games without the need to apply.
Remember, all Personal Licence holders are required to complete refresher training within 5 years of the date of issue of their licence. After completing the training they have a further three months to lodge, to the relevant Board, a certificate confirming that they have completed the training. Failure to do this will result in the licence being revoked. Naturally, this is of particular importance to those Personal Licence holders who are Designated Premises Managers. Those who were issued Personal Licences before September 2009 must complete their refresher training before 1st September 2014 and must, before the 30th November, lodge with the relevant board, a certificate confirming that the training has been completed. w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m
WASTE MANAGEMENT
BIN IT - WHERE? G1 Group’s Risk & Compliance Manager, Chris Helton updates us with new waste regulations that come into force at the start of the year THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS WILL BE CONSIDERED GENERAL WASTE: Used napkins, blue roll or paper towels, any toilet paper, paper plates, floor sweepings, and contents of ashtrays. Glass will need to be presented for collection in a separate glass bin also. The second provision enforces all food business creating 50kg of food waste or more per week to present food waste for collection in a separate bin. A rough guide of 50kg of food waste is ¾ of a normal residential wheelie bin. Your waste collector will be able to provide food waste bins which are the same size as the normal 240L wheelie bin.
My main focus is to ensure our venues and employees, in the managed estate, comply with health and safety, environmental, licensing and security laws. A new regulation relating to waste management is coming into force on 1st January 2014 and I want to give you the key facts relating to this change in law as they will affect you and your business. The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 were passed by the Scottish Parliament on May 9th 2012. The purpose of these regulations is to help Scotland become one of the most resource efficient nations in Europe.
WITH THAT THESE FOLLOWING PROVISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE: 1. Businesses to present metal, plastic, glass, paper and card for separate collection from 1st January 2014. 2. Food businesses (except in rural areas) which produce over 50 kg of food waste per week to present that food waste for separate collection from 1st January 2014. 3. Food businesses (except in rural areas) which produce over 5kg of food waste per week to present that food waste for separate collection from 1st January 2016.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU? The first provision relates to how you present your waste for collection. From January 1st 2014 you will need to separate mixed recyclables and glass from general waste. This will mean having a general waste bin, a mixed recycling bin and a glass bin. THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS WILL NEED TO BE DISPOSED OF IN MIXED RECYCLING: Empty cans, empty plastic bottles, card and cardboard, papers and magazines, empty food containers, straws
As with every law, there will be an enforcement process in place with infringements being punishable by fines. Having looked at the regulations a high level fine up to £10,000 can be issued to anyone who is found to not be segregating their waste. The higher fines will be in the most severe cases however I would expect most fines to be around the £500-£1000 for offenders. There will be a system in place to provide improvement notices and enforcement notices from your local authority prior to involving the courts. Regardless of the value of the fine, it is something to be avoided therefore you will need to introduce measures in your business to ensure your compliance. My advice to you is to contact your waste contractor and ask for a visit as I am sure they will provide guidance and assist you in the transition to the new regime. There are also some good websites to visit which will also give you all the information you need. http://www.zerowastescotland.org.uk & http://www.sepa.org.uk/waste/waste_ regulation.aspx I’d like to wish you all luck in introducing these new measures and thank you for reading.

Little Guide to BIG Events
WHAT’S NEXT? A look ahead to the next big events coming up in our marketing calendar including a heads up for future events
IT SEEMS ANY TIME WE TALK ABOUT LITTLE GUIDE TO BIG EVENTS IN INNSIGHT WE’RE ALWAYS COMING UP TO SOME SORT OF ‘THAT TIME OF THE YEAR’. This edition is no different with the beginning of a very busy summer for everyone in the trade right around the corner. The first couple of months of 2014 have been rightly predicated as the calm before the storm. We are now already in April with the lighter nights and warmer weather kicking in it’s in these first few weeks where you really need to take note of exactly what you wish to achieve with your summer. The usual dates like Easter, Father’s Day, Kids Eat Free during summer should all be firmly and predictably at the top of your list. But what else is there?
EASTER
See the latest Little Guide to BIG Events email. To be added to the list email us on craiggrant@g1group.co.uk.
weeks the best weeks of the football calendar and going out with a bang! So let’s imagine you’re up for this football fortnight, you’ll need to tell people about it! Marketing, preparation, commitment and buy in from your staff are key to doing something like this properly...
FOOTBALL FINALS
POSTERS & FLYERS Please don’t make your own posters on white paper then stick them up with bluetack. It looks horrible and will serve no positive purpose at all. Get as much information about the event as possible and get Craig from Graphics & Marketing to make you up a set of posters and flyers for you to hand out on the lead up to the event. Once these are ticked off stick them in prime areas of your pub in your professional and tidy snap frames.
SUNDAY 20TH APRIL
FINAL MATCHDAY - 11th MAY EUROPA LEAGUE - 14th MAY SCOTTISH & FA CUP - 17th MAY CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - 24th MAY The key with these is to make them more than just matches and more of an event. Get the locals talking about it in the lead up with some great advertisement around your site and local area. Make sure you have snap frames around the pub, in the toilets and in the beer garden. Get flyers printed and have a pile lying at the bar and distribute the around your local area. Get in your postman’s good books and get him to drop them in with his round. With a fortnight between the end of the Premier League season and the UEFA Champions League final why not make this a 2 week celebration and create a ‘football fortnight’ making these two
6 / A p r i l M ay J u n e 2 0 1 4 / I n n S i g h t
SNAP FRAMES Don’t have snap frames? We’ve sourced extremelly reasonably priced frames in all sizes and styles. Email Craig Grant for details on where to buy these from. TV SCREENS Rather than have Noel Edmonds or Jeremy Kyle blaring out during the day why not fill this time with classic matches from the upcoming competition and powerpoint presentation slides advertising your event (and any other upcoming events for that matter). This gets people in the mood and makes sure you’re making the most of your big screens.

FATHER’S DAY SUNDAY 15TH JUNE
Very similar to Mother’s Day in the sense that it’s a great opportunity to get the family together. With mums we tend to think of afternoon teas, mums eat free and cocktails. With Father’s Day we’re right bang in the middle of June so can explore the possibility of BBQs, eating competitions and beer garden pitchers. BOTTLED BEERS & 4-PINT PITCHERS Have a tempting drinks offer on throughout the weekend whether it’s a bucket of bottled beer for a set price or a 4-pint pitcher, make it attractive to get people literally buying into it. BARBE-WHO? BARBEQUE! Mums enjoy a good afternoon tea on their special day but 9/10 dads would prefer a barbeque. If you have a beer garden tied into their situation you’re laughing. Set it all up and fire on your burgers, hotdogs and chicken kebabs. DADS vs FOOD A BBQ seem a bit too tame for your punters? Up the ante and promote a Dads vs Food winnertakes-all battle royal! Old school hot
STAFF These guys are big players in promoting your matchday events. Make sure they know exactly what’s happening and et them informing customers on a regular basis. Introduce staff incentives for the staff member who shows the most enthusiasm or confirms a targetted amount of attendants. BE PREPARED! Please, please, please be prepared! There is nothing more frustrating that having a great plan that crashes and burns because you’ve either not given yourself enough time to promote it or you’ve committed enough time to doing it properly.
DIRECTOR’S BOX Section off an area which is deemed as prime viewing slot for your screens - decorate with “special” seats (sofas are a great idea), flags, hats, etc so it stands out from the norm of the pub. Sell raffle tickets for the Directors Box and the winners enjoy the hospitality for a particular match. Example... £2 a ticket gets the winner 3-4 people in the directors’ box. Using the money the raffle generates they get waitress service bringing them
dog eating contest with drinks or food vouchers for the pub as the main prize. Get tshirts made up if you’re feeling generous for everyone who competes. This is a great opportunity to make it an annual event your pub is known for. SPORTS DAY Create that cute memory for dads and their kids as they waddle, 3-legged towards the finish line while mum’s screaming obscenities from the sidelines for them to win her those tickets to a cocktail masterclass. Other events could be egg throwing & catching, fishing for rubber ducks, milk drinking competition, etc. Utilise your beer garden or function room for best results. The key as always is to advertise early and clearly. Once you have finalised your offer contact Craig in Graphics to come up with range of posters, banners, table talkers and flyers to promote your event not only to your regulars but to passing trade and local dads and their families. four pint pitchers (eg £9.95 and available all weekend for the football - get that on your posters and flyers!), first drink free, popcorn, half-time snacks, promo tshirt or football shirt of the finalist teams, guaranteed best and comfiest seats in the pub and table area making them the envy of everyone else! More than one screen means more than one box and remember, your costs are covered with raffle entry money. Take it that step further and include half time meals and treats as part of the winning package.
GRADUATIONS Graduations have slipped through the net for the vast majority of sites throughout the estate over the years. With it being one of the few times families properly come together in the year the opportunity to put on a special menu is and cater for tables of 6+ is too good to miss. University and college graduations up and down the country can begin in June and carry on through to September. It’s another great chance to get families in your venue and show them how good you are. It can also prove an ideal time to promote upcoming events, get bookings in for Christmas and become their ‘go-toplace for birthdays and anniversaries.
Bookings can be taken for tables of 4 upwards, tables can be pushed together for larger parties or, if you have the space, hire out your function room to add that bit of privacy to the celebrations. Menus can be created and designed by combining the skills of our very own Graphic Designer and Food Development Manager. They will be able to come up with a fantastic offer tailored to your needs, venue and clientelle. See below for their contact details.
Take picture of the day to upload onto facebook to ensure your customers are fully aware who has won and even reach out to the local paper for the extra bit of publicity. This SATURDAY 25TH MAY 2013 will entice WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON KICK OFF 7:45PM customers and other local drinkers into the raffle for the next game!

The Swan Inn, Panda & Sons, Ram’s Head & Crosskeys
PUB STORIES Each week we take a look at pubs in the estate that have either been recently invested in or have their own good news story.
The Swan Inn on polnoon street in the historic village of Eaglesham has been around longer than most, over 180 years to be precise, this cosy bar has been the heart and soul of the community for all these years pouring pints for both the locals and the passing trade on their way up and down to Glasgow. However around seven years ago the village was dealt a blow when the extension of the M77 was complete which met that the volume of traffic passing the village was greatly reduced and business was affected within both the Swan and the village itself, but then more recently as if someone ‘upstairs’ was looking after the village, there was the creation on the one of the largest wind farms in the UK with 140 windmills and a visitor centre built on the moor land only a couple of miles from the
village. This helped to reverse the effect of the motorway and started to again bring more visitors to the area. At the helm of The Swan for the last four years have been Joe and Linda Keenan who are no strangers to the area as many years ago they owned the other licensed property in the village, The Eaglesham Hotel. Joe and Linda have a great depth of knowledge in the licenced trade and also currently run two successful nightclubs in the neighbouring town of East Kilbride as well as a large town centre pub busy with food and day time shoppers. When we asked Linda how The Swan compared to their other businesses she replied...
‘The Swan is a fantastic pub and has a real community spirit about it, it is everything you would want from a village pub, there is a coal fire, cask ales, good food, I suppose the only thing I would have wanted would be for it to be a bit bigger at times and a conservatory would be nice!’ She continued “We have had to work very hard at The Swan and ensure that we continue to appeal to the locals while attracting in new faces. Eaglesham is a conservation village and at night you can hear a pin drop.
8 / July August September 2013 / InnSight 8 / A p r i l M ay J u n e 2 0 1 4 / I n n S i g h t
We have had to be very careful amount noise levels and not to upset the neighbours as we want them to enjoy the pub too. We had one issue with noise complaints however the whole village rallied around us and it never came to anything” We asked Linda what was the secret to their success at The Swan and she commented “It’s not just one thing to be honest; It’s the atmosphere, the great staff, ensuring that the standards are kept high at all times, good food. They all come together to make it a great place, plus Joe and I get involved in the events within the pub, Joe compares the Karaoke and I get involved in the Quiz, it’s what you have to do these days to be part of the community.” Gary from Iona added “Joe and Linda have been great operators at The Swan and even during difficult times have managed to maintain a good all-round offer to the customers, year on year the volumes have bucked the industry decline and as Linda said this has been down to a number of factors but for me it’s the staff, standards and getting hands on within the business.” Linda and Joe would welcome you to visit and also recommend a visit to the wind farm as like them or not, it is very impressive. www.ionapub.com w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m
and Caroline knew there had their work cut out to take the business forward but they could see the potential. A year on and things have really progressed with loyal customers and there are always new faces appearing due to the great reputation that has been created in the community. The pints are the best In the area and the homemade soup and sandwiches go down a treat with the regulars and the walking groups which also use the pub when passing.
Caroline and Philip Lotcho took on the Crosskeys pub, Edinburgh back in September 2012. The pub was mainly for Caroline to run and over see along with their other dog grooming businesses that they already had. They had visions for the Crosskeys to create a real community pub and to attract more of the local clientele with a high standard of food and drinks along with regular entertainment. The pub is a small community pub in the longstone area of Edinburgh with plenty of character. Previously with a management company in place Philip
There’s been a pub on the site of the Rams Head on Maryhill Road since 1889. Fast forward 124 years and the Rams Head needed to be re-born. September brought a chance of tenant and with it the ideal opportunity for the fresh start the site craved. One of Iona’s experienced operators, Alan McLaughlin (The Hazlewood Bar, Nitshill) was the man up for the challenge and once handed the keys he mentioned his main priority was to bring this famous Glasgow pub ‘jumping’ back to life. www.ionapub.com w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m
Back in June of this year Caz and Phil decided they were ready for their second venture and were looking to take on another pub with Iona. They visited a few different sites to see what was available. South Bridge Street in Airdrie is now their second pub which they have rebranded ‘The Volunteer.’ Caroline’s daughter Cheryl is the main face of the pub on a day to day basis and is running the pub with the support of her mum and her experience. Again they could see the potential this site had and needed a bit of love and attention to detail with a bit of stability. They have been able to attract all of the regular clientele along with lots of new faces.
The transformation has been remarkable with both the large lounge and bar areas being fully refurbished. From revarnished, beautifully finished wooden flooring to new comfortable seating throughout, the pub has a fantastic new look. Even one of the regulars swear it’s not the same place! Alan ‘shears’ his plan with us on how he intends to ‘put the meat back on the bones’, It’s all about high standards, from maintaining absolute cleanliness, to a warm friendly welcome to all of our patrons
The Volunteer Halloween party is just an example of the efforts that the team go to for every event to make it a great success. The weekly Karaoke’s, Discos, entertainment and Bingo afternoons are what make both of the pubs different to the competition.
Of course, Alan recognises that he can’t do all of this on his own, “I’ve got a great team here, led by my nephew, Peter and our aim is to provide refreshing beer, delicious food and great entertainment for all of our customers”. Alan is also excited about a new beer garden with work planned in the upcoming months, “I’m hoping for a summer like the one we had this year for 2014, as we will quite simply have the best beer garden in the area”. Make sure you get along to the Rams Head, if not to check out their new look at least to try their tasty Shepherd’s Pie! 8 / July August September 2013 / InnSight InnSight / Apr il May June 2014 / 9
Edinburgh’s newest bar says it recognises the importance of conceptual delivery for the more savvy and adventurous drinkers of the capital city. Panda & Sons say they arguably have two at heart - ‘offer the very best of all that you do’ and ‘there is no such thing as cool’ The latter of these may even hint at irony given the track record of disarmingly charming founder and CEO Iain McPherson, who at his young age has already been recognised for his success at The Voodoo Rooms, which won international awards under his stewardship. The principle underpinning Panda & Sons, like all the best bars in the world, is winningly simple- ‘I want people to feel welcome, ‘says McPherson. And they certainly are ensuring they do just that, with an exceptional eye for detail
1 0 / A p r i l M ay J u n e 2 0 1 4 / I n n S i g h t
that he says he finds lacking in other bars- ‘we are ensuring we cater for all in a group, with an offering that extends way beyond the WKD, alcopops and fortified wine we tend to see in many of our bars these days.’
The theme is broadly inspired by classic New York Speakeasy throughout with a nod to the traditional barbershop, but the hand-made bar inlaid with three woods points to a pride and attention running through the leather and wood interior. Such passion and attention to detail is increasingly demanded by the new wave of social consumers, as the commitment to a perfect environment for a catch-up, night out or nightcap is at a premium. Panda & Sons opened its doors in early November, and promises to add to the tangible sense of community the city, and indeed increasingly the world’s best independent bars seem to share. Eschewing simple nostalgia to be informed by the very best of the past in a vintage and quirky setting, Panda and Sons will soon be one of your favourite bars. w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m

FOOD IN OUR PUBS WITH ANDY MORGAN
FOOD INFLATION Andy Morgan is Iona’s very own Food Development Manager. Here he updates us on any issues or stories from the past few months.
We have witnessed some fantastic successes with a lot of activity of new launches over 2013 and the beginning of 2014, not just with the ones featured here. With this I would like to thank all the tenants & their BDMs for their continuing support in helping me launch these and assuring we deliver extra value to our your businesses.
At this time of year I have found it is always good to have a look back over the last twelve months to review how far business has moved on and the steps that have been taken to get you to where you are. With this in mind I thought it would be good to review some of our biggest success stories we’ve had over this time.
ROBIN & LOUISE, THE VILLAGE INN (Torrance) Both Louise & Robin celebrated their first Christmas in the wonderful Village Inn and what a great year it has been. It’s been full steam ahead since they went into the venue last January and launched their initial food menu. Being one pub of three in a tiny village, Christmas 2013 was a rip roaring success with all their party nights and Christmas Day offer fully booked since early November. It just goes to show how early planning helps at this time of year and especially when up against local competitors.
KEVIN & RODDIE, THE AVENUE (Bishopbriggs) After a much need face lift the Avenue opened its doors on the 6th November and has already been confirmed by the locals in Bishopbriggs as the No1 destination in the area to be seen in whilst enjoying the quality food, premium beers and top end wines on offer. The food consists of top quality produce and is laid out on well designed menus. They have enjoyed a busy festive period to further cement their reputation within the area.
ANGELA, THE CALEDONIAN (Perth) Again after a major refurbishment earlier in the year has seen Angela and her team focus on the food offer and have been rewarded with growing sales and a business going from strength to strength. They have just enjoyed their 1st Christmas food offer to their eager regulars and are launching a more extensive new menu from January 2014.
JANICE & PAUL, THE WEE MILL (Rutherglen) The Wee Mills food offer launched on the second week of December 2013, the menu has been designed to capture local and passing trade and features all the pub favourites, with a strong focus on quality and value. The pubs future success looks positive & exciting as it is sited close by to all the major sporting venues for this years forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow East End.
We already have some cracking food offers in the pipeline for 2014 which is shaping up to be one of our most exciting yet! 1 2 / A p r i l M ay J u n e 2 0 1 4 / I n n S i g h t

GLASGOW 2014 How will the biggest sporting event to be held in Scotland affect you and your pub?
THIS SUMMER THE EYES OF THE WORLD WILL BE ON GLASGOW AS IT HOSTS THE 20th COMMONWEALTH GAMES. WHETHER YOU WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY GET A TICKET AND ARE GOING TO WATCH IT LIVE OR AT THE PUB WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY, YOU’LL BE WATCHING SPORTING HISTORY AND THE GREATEST SPORTING AND CULTURAL EVENT EVER TO HAPPEN IN SCOTLAND UNFOLD.
WHAT ARE THE GAMES? The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are on course to perhaps be one of the most memorable Commonwealth Games ever. 6,500 athletes from 70 countries will compete in 17 sports over 11 days, from 23 July – 3 August 2014. From the precision of lawn bowls
to the exciting combat of wrestling and judo – from the high adrenaline of track events to the grace and beauty of gymnastics – in 2014 Glasgow will be the stage for a fantastic summer of sport, as well as a massive range of cultural and arts events for everyone. Most sports will take place on three compact site clusters to the east, south and west of the city centre, but there are some events that take place outside the city; shooting at Carnoustie, Edinburgh will host diving and Strathclyde Country Park will host triathlon. The first games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada where 11 countries sent 400 athletes to take part in six sports and 59 events. Since then, the Games have been held every four years (except for 1942 and 1946 because of the Second World War) and the event has seen many
changes, not least in its name. From 1930 to 1950 the Games were known as the British Empire Games, from 1954 until 1966 the British Empire and Commonwealth Games and from 1970 to 1974
they took on the title of British Commonwealth Games. It was the 1978 Games in Edmonton that saw this multi-sports event change its name to the Commonwealth Games. Scotland hosted the Games in 1970 and 1986. The 2002 Games in Manchester saw for the first time full medal events for elite athletes with a disability (EAD) in a fully-inclusive sports programme. This will be continued at Glasgow in 2014. So that’s a quick intro to the Commonwealth Games but what do they mean for you? Are you close to any events? What will the tourists bring to your venue? How can you market your offers?

17 SPORTS & 14 VENUES The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will offer three compact site clusters for competition venues within the City of Glasgow. These will make the most of the City’s extensive sporting and events infrastructure. People hear almost always associate the Commonwealth events as a mirror of the Olympics. That’s not entirely the case so from the precision of Lawn Bowls to the combat of Wrestling and Judo, the high adrenaline of track events, and the grace and beauty of Gymnastics - here is a list of the 17 sports that will be fiercely competed for at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and where you’ll be able to see them.

WITH THESE GAMES PLAYING A MAJOR PART IN MOST OF OUR SUMMER PLANS I’M POSITIVE THE VAST MAJORITY OF YOU ARE ALREADY PLANNING WHAT OFFERS, PROMOTIONS AND GENERAL MARKETING YOU’LL BE PLANNING OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BRAND REGULATIONS IN PLACE THAT PREVENT YOU FROM ADVERTISING THIS EVENT? NO COMMONWEALTH LOGOS AND ABOSLUTELY NO MENTION OF GLASGOW 2014 - THESE ARE TWO MISTAKES THAT ARE ALREADY LANDING A LOT OF PEOPLE IN HOT WATER!
It’s the term used when a person or business illegitimately attempts to associate itself with a major event without paying the required sponsorship fees. In other words, using an association with Glasgow 2014 to generate its own commercial income without paying the OC for the right to do so. The attraction to companies or individuals who consider ambush marketing in order to boost business is obvious. However, rights to use the Games brand will only be afforded to official sponsors of the Games — those with the explicit authority to market their goods or services in connection with the Games. The OC has measures in place to prevent ambush marketing and will not hesitate to take action against it if it occurs. Also, the sale of counterfeit and unofficial goods and other similar activities would undermine the OC’s ability to generate the required revenue for the Games. If we fail to tackle ambush marketing and, as a result, fail to reach our revenue targets, there is a real likelihood that the quality of the Games will suffer.
A condition of the award of the Games to Glasgow by the CGF was a requirement for legislation to be put in place to counter ambush marketing and prevent any unauthorised association with the Games. The legislative support is not intended to restrict legitimate organisations, but to provide sponsors of the Games with the necessary guarantees that sufficient controls are in place against ambush marketing.
WHAT IS LIKELY TO BE CONSIDERED AN ASSOCIATION? Although not definitive, the following expressions when used in conjunction with each other, or with a reference to sports, are likely to be considered to be an association with the Games and therefore are more likely to fall foul of the Order.
The Glasgow Commonwealth Games Act 2008 (Games Association Right) Order 2009 (the “Order”) came into force on the 20th January 2010 as part of the suite of protections envisaged by the Glasgow Commonwealth Games Act 2008. The passing of the Order gives the OC the ability to prevent organisations from creating an association with the Games without authorisation.
• GAMES • TWO THOUSAND AND FOURTEEN • 2014 • XXTH OR 20TH • XX • GLASGOW • MEDALS • SPONSORS • GOLD • SILVER • BRONZE • ORGANISING COMMITTEE • COMMONWEALTH GAMES
PROTECTED MARKS
For example, the following would likely be regarded as trying to create an association with the Games (and hence be prohibited under the Order):
The following marks and words are protected as trademarks, registered designs, copyright or common law in the UK and are either owned by or licensed to the OC. All of the marks and words below represent the Games brand to which this guidance applies

ENFORCEMENT • Interdict (a court order prohibiting any further infringing actions) • Count, reckoning and payment (a legal procedure that requires someone to account for their dealing with assets under their stewardship) GLASGOW 2014
• Damages • Destruction of infringing goods, material or articles. ! Please note that the trade mark protection here includes any additional colour variations

Hospitality and tourism businesses are being urged to get ready for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games with the launch of a unique online programme designed to ensure the city delivers an outstanding visitor experience. The online customer service programme, which costs just £5 per person and takes two hours to complete, has been developed by the city's tourism service initiative, Glasgow Welcomes (previously Glasgow Service with Style) to enable the city's 40,000 tourism, leisure and hospitality workers to easily access customer service training in the run up to the Games.
We hope to achieve this goal by supporting hospitality and tourism staff to play their part in making Glasgow 2014 an experience for everyone to savour and remember. Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Gordon Matheson, said: "Hundreds of thousands of visitors will descend on Glasgow for the Games this summer, presenting a huge opportunity for local businesses. Glasgow is globally renowned for its warm welcome and we need our businesses to provide visitors with an unforgettable experience. Our customer service must be world-class if we want those visitors, and their friends and families, to return time and again.
IT HAS BEEN SPECIALLY TAILORED FOR THE GAMES, WITH PRACTICAL ADVICE ON HOW TO DELIVER EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE STANDARDS; INFORMATION ABOUT GLASGOW'S TOP ATTRACTIONS SO THAT FRONTLINE SERVICE STAFF CAN OFFER UPTO-DATE ADVICE ON WHAT THERE IS TO SEE AND DO IN THE CITY, AND FACTS AND FIGURES ON GAMES EVENTS, VENUES AND DATES. The Glasgow Welcomes initiative is an Legacy Project and is using the 2014 opportunity to create a lasting legacy of excellent customer service standards across all touch points of the visitor experience. w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m
"The Glasgow Welcomes online programme is an important first step for businesses to showing their support and engaging their workforce. Alongside the athletes, the city and its people will be the
stars of the Games, providing a dynamic stage and friendly introduction to the largest party Glasgow has ever hosted." David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, said: “The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will see over 6,500 athletes and team officials come to Glasgow for 11 days of amazing competition that will put both the city and Scotland on the world stage. “With the unprecedented demand for our ticketing programme and fantastic response to our call for volunteers, we know that the city will be bustling with activity like never before for what will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime event. “By working together to ensure we can deliver an outstanding Games experience for everyone to enjoy, we can secure lasting benefits for communities, businesses, Glasgow and Scotland.” For anyone interested in taking part in the programme or find out more go to www.glasgowwelcomes.com

BEER GARDENS With warmer weather just around the corner now is the time to start thinking about your outdoor offer
An attractive outdoor area can raise your capacity, pull in more customers and increase turnover. In winter, it can offer a warm, sheltered space for customers who want some fresh air. In the summer, it’s the perfect place for beers and barbecues.
Having a nice garden will bring more people to your pub. Everyone wants to be sitting in a pretty garden and drinking beer. It’s relaxing and a change from the concrete jungle. Following the smoking ban, a number of urban pubs have turned their car parks into beer gardens. Even the smallest of outdoor areas can attract more custom and create an useful overflow area when the pub is particularly busy. Before you start digging for victory, it’s worth considering what the purpose of your garden will be. Is your target audience going to be smokers, drinkers, diners or a combination of all three? If you’re looking to serve food outside, it’s about creating an area that can expand your dining space. And to be able to book those tables you need to offer covering whether it be patio heaters, awnings or heated umbrellas. Friday, Saturday or Sunday barbeques are a great way to secure trade from local competitors that maybe don’t have the space or resources to compete with you on that front. Advertise clearly and stick on a live beer garden band. Alternatively can you think of anything better than a barbeque while you watch the Champions League or World Cup? External screens, burgers and beers with your football pals. Get it right and you’ve hit the back on the net for your Summer nights!

With bank holiday weather last year being so wonderful, a survey of 900 people indicated that 77% visited a pub or restaurant on the 25, 26 or 27 of May, and 37% of those saying they looked for somewhere with a garden. CASH IN ON KIDS Become that extra option for mums and dads during the summer holidays by becoming more appealing to families
It’s now April, the clocks have sprung forward which means winter is slowly but surely packing up it’s ridiculous rainclouds, hell of a pain in the ass hailstones and gonky gale force winds and finally heading south of the equator to give us a break for a couple of weeks. This presents an ideal opportunity to think of ways to encourage families back into your pub over the summer and school holidays.
KIDS EAT FREE
DOING IT FOR THE KIDS
This old chestnut may be old news but dang nab it it works. The mechanics are simple and I’m sure you’ve all done it or encountered this offer before. Each child eats free for every full paying adult they’re accompanied by. You set the times, menu and any other T&cs you might think of. One thing it’s great for is boosting trade at otherwise quiet times of the day but also attracting large groups of parents bringing their kids enabling each child to eat free.
You know you’ve really nailed it when you’re known as that pub families swarm to from miles away, as well as locally, to visit at the insistence of their kids. That doesn’t come easy though and there aren’t any quick fixes to achieve this. I can however give you some ideas that I’ve personally seen work in other pubs on my travels...
SUPER FUN PLAY AREAS COFFEE MORNING COMMUNICATION Networking opportunities are win-win in areas where mums are keen to meet others in a relaxed setting. We have a pub in Edinburgh which attracts 10-30 expectant mums as well as those with babies and toddlers, plus the occasional new dad, to its monthly Babies & Bumps coffee morning by offering an adult-focused environment, with toys and high-chairs for the wee ones. On the first Thursday of each month the pub opens at 9.45am with coffee and cake. Entry is free with loyalty and footfall benefiting from word-of-mouth publicity and flyers. w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m
Transforming a dark, unattractive outside space into a quirky, colourful play area can prove highly successful without costing a fortune. Sourcing second hand play area equipment from eBay and adding several square metres of AstroTurf and a playhouse helped one tenant do just that last summer. Children quickly feel at home in the safe, fun playground, while parents drink or dine at adjacent wooden tables. At the end of the summer they estimated that their investment in the play area has boosted summer food and drinks turnover by a third. Children’s portions are always available and the familyfriendly philosophy is echoed in events such as children’s discos, movie nights, bbqs and parties.

AWARD WINNERS Some of our tenants have been busy scooping up awards across the country.
Edinburgh played host to the Radio Forth Awards on 7th November 2013 with stars such as JLS & Tom Odell making appearances on the night, one of the categories was the best bar & restaurant award which was won by our very own Black Bull, Mid Calder. This fantastic community pub is run by Donald Mclauchlan and his family and they can be incredibly proud that the customers of the pub took the time to cast their votes to ensure the pub achieved this recognition. Having been in the pub for almost five years it’s great to see that the hard work and effort has been rewarded after coming running up for the same category at last years awards. We would like to give our thanks and congratulations to Donald and the team at the Black Bull Inn and look forward to them defending the title next year! 30 / A p r i l M ay J u n e 2 0 1 4 / I n n S i g h t
The increasingly trendy area of Tollcross has had a bit of a renaissance recently with independent bars, restaurants and boutiques springing up with much enthusiasm and applause. Opened in late 2012, The Blackbird – sister bar of Hamilton’s in Stockbridge and Treacle on Broughton Street has become a huge talking point in the area. The formerly run down Auld Toll bar was given a huge makeover, complete with new kitchen, great outside space, specifically designed wallpaper (controversially put on the ceiling!) and tables from local furniture maker – vintage and reclaimed. It’s the customers that seem to have had the biggest makeover however - gone are the clientele of the Auld Toll. Today, the bar staff and customers are a hybrid of young professionals, Edinburgh university types and hot mums - all of whom adopting a hipster-led individual style, so prevalent with today’s fashion conscious urbanites. It is this individual approach to design that has seen the bar win a coveted Scottish Style Award at Glasgow’s glittering event at the stunning Kelvingrove Museum. The team behind The Blackbird – Colin Church and Martin Luney, beat off stiff competition from other Edinburgh venues – Lucky Liquor Co and Scotch @ The Balmoral to Win Most Stylish Bar. The Winners rubbed shoulders with other recipients Celebrity Chef Andrew Fairlie, Actor Martin Compston and most Stylish female winner Sara McDonald, seen arriving with husband – Oasis frontman Noel Gallaher. It is great to see Individual style being commended and so many local faces flying the flag for the capital as Edinburgh holds its own on the ever changing and ever innovative British Style and fashion scene. w w w. i o n a p u b. c o m

MEET THE TEAM Each month we work our way through the IONA team finding out the ins & outs of what’s led them to where they are today
INTERESTING FACT ABOUT YOURSELF? I have webbed feet – they’re great for swimming and also win you the odd freak show!.
DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY? Yes – the latest being at
Glasgow Caledonian University / Open University.
BEST & WORST JOBS? Best job was
managing a venue which was losing money when I took the job as manager and turning it around into a highly profitable site. The worst was as a milk delivery boy when I was a teenager – getting up at 5am was awful, but I suppose the cash was good
FAVOURITE FOOD? Mince, tatties and cabbage... although I appreciate that the after effects are not that pleasant FAVOURITE DRINK? A really spicy
Bloody Mary or the first cold pint of Lager after a round of golf
FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
Barcelona for a city break – great architecture and the cava is heavenly with some tapas or Florida for a longer holiday – great for golf and Disneyworld of course.
FAVOURITE FILM? Once Upon A Time in America – 4 hours of the best acting you’re likely to see – did you know that Woods and De Niro were actually meant to play the opposite parts at one point!

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT?
I fell asleep in the toilet of the old Alhambra on Waterloo Street a few years ago. Fortunately the staff were still in having a drink (that’s strictly not allowed now folks!!) and let me out in time to make the last bus home!
IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME WHICH PERIOD WOULD YOU CHOOSE? The 1980s – warm long summers and great timeless music – The Clash and The Jam were absolutely brilliant!!
WHAT GETS YOU IN RAGE MODE?
Some large organisations so called ‘Customer Services’ phone support. I spent 8 hours over 3 days on a certain telecommunications support line a few weeks ago.
WHAT COULD YOU POSSIBLY NOT LIVE WITHOUT & WHY? My Shih Tzu – I always get a warm welcome home from her. She also reminds me to switch off from time to time and just have some fun!!.
YOU’VE JUST WON THE EUROMILLIONS - WHAT DO YOU BUY? I would buy Partick Thistle FC and lead them to the SPFL Championship and I’d like a £160m Paul Cezanne painting for my living room - it can replace the flying ducks…
