BALLPARK
Ranking the stadiums across the big leagues
JULY 10—17, 2013 USA TODAY SPORTS WEEKLY
Our “In the Ballpark” series features a stadium every week as we count down the majors’ 30 parks from worst to best. Joe Mock from BaseballParks.com, an affiliate of USA TODAY Sports Digital Properties, is the tour guide. Mock has been reviewing and photographing ballparks over the last 15 years. He has visited 201 of the current 203 ballparks in use for the major leagues, spring training and the affiliated minor league teams. He is the author of Joe Mock’s Ballpark Guide.
Each review includes: uThe stadium’s location. uAn overview of its exterior features and a breakdown of the architectural elements inside. uKey amenities for fans. uThe future outlook for the park. This week, we feature Mock’s No. 18, Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Cooper University Hospital PNC Field
By Eric Hartline, USA TODAY Sports
Sunny days in Philadelphia: In nine seasons from 2004 to 20012, the Phillies attracted 3 million or more fans to Citizens Bank Park seven times. The most was 3,777,322 in 2010.
Philly falls for Citizens Bank Park Fans have flocked since ballpark’s 2004 opening COMING NEXT WEEK NO. 17 YANKEE STADIUM
By Joe Mock BaseballParks.com PHILADELPHIA — It’s simple economics. Any manufacturer would be happy to see his sales increase by 84%. Baseball teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies are no different. They are thrilled that attendance during the team’s first nine years of playing at Citizens Bank Park was 84% higher than the final nine seasons they played in the same complex in South Philadelphia at now-demolished Veterans Stadium.
Here’s how it breaks down: Average attendance per season during The Vet’s last nine years (1995 through 2003) was 1,790,408, and they had crowds of at least 40,000 43 times; from 2004 through 2012 at Citizens Bank Park, an average of 3,293,611 came through the turnstiles each year, and attendance topped 40,000 at 508 games. Along the way, the Phillies set the National League record with 257 consecutive regular-season sellouts. According to research conducted by David Kronheim of Number Tamer.com, there was this additional bit of sunny economic news
for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania: When the Phillies led all of Major League Baseball in attendance in 2011 (the first time in franchise history they had done so), their Class AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in Allentown, led all of minor league baseball in attendance. That had never occurred. Philadelphia sports fans have long been known for their, well, fanaticism, but exactly why did they start turning out in such stunning numbers when the team moved into Citizens Bank Park? Certainly, the baseball-only facility was more comfortable and
intimate, and the improved team the Phillies put on the field helped, with playoff appearances in five consecutive seasons from 2007 to 2011, including the 2008 World Series championship. Something else was at play, too. “CBP is more than just a ballpark. It has become one of the most popular go-to social gathering places in the city,” said Craig Schmitt, principal at EwingCole, the architecture firm that designed the facility. “Further, team ownership truly cares about their fan base and providing the best entertainment experience.”

THE WAY FORWARD
Beyond
ne zero
Sustainability as such has no bench marks. The more you respect mother earth and create designs that are organic in built form and knit with nature, the environment becomes more lively and human. The building should not be a constituent of brick and concrete alone but should progressively grow and blossom like a flower and become an eternal part of landscape and its natural surrounding. It needs to be treated like a living organism and should breathe & be inter woven with the environment. My past 40 years of experience and passion for sustainable green architecture has progressed my thoughts. I feel like a proud father of every building which we have designed, like a father feels honored and proud when his son is settled with recognized profession of merit. Every building is a design challenge. Passive strategies towards respecting the site topography, orientation, wind directions and selection of appropriate materials and technology lead to sustainability. Maximizing daylight and minimizing heat gain in hot-dry and composite climate is one of the major concerns of planning. Conservation of water and energy by use of natural process of recycling, reuse and making the built environment off the grid is what perhaps is Net Zero. We need to look beyond net Zero. The rural & urban overlap demands for food and vegetation growth within the built environment. For a sustainable campus Integrated livable environment has been planned by our team where human habitat and agriculture for self-sufficiency co-exist. New technological advancements have been amalgamated to achieve a sustainable campus wherein human habitat and self-reliant eco-system of Flora & Fauna co-exist. This makes the IITJodhpur campus a vision beyond net zero or net-positive. Š 2013 by Creative Group, New Delhi & Ewing Cole, USA. All Rights Reserved
My professional journey of more than two decades from practice to teaching and authoring of books has provided me with insight and visionary thought of the young budding Architects toward better, healthy and green environment by way of new innovative ideas and use of appropriate technology beyond imagination. Our recent mega infrastructure global winning design (competition) the Chennai Airport, which truly is the Greenest Airport Terminal and City Side Development which we are proud to have achieved through adaptation of most of the active and passive strategies of sustainability and green architecture. Our corporate buildings and campuses namely CRI Pumps, Suguna Poultry, REC, HPGCL, Oil India are truly demonstrating the green elements and adherence to ECBC code. The passion towards profession has led us to great heights, achievements and innovations. Kongu convention centre with a capacity of 4500 person is a landmark of South India as one of the largest and sustainable developments. Amudham Dairy Plant is another true example of affordable and sustainable landmark industrial complex with use of appropriate technology to achieve the highest aesthetics and conducive environment. I can proudly say that with my vast experience Creative Group has inculcated within their team members the zeal and passion to design beyond Net Zero. May we call the same as dream with the unimaginable thoughts looking to be fairy tales of today but reality of tomorrow. Let us march together towards green and look beyond Net Zero.
