School board recommends demolishing Roosevelt BY MARK VEST mvest@candgnews.com
WEST BLOOMFIELD — Roosevelt Elementary School in Keego Harbor has been the subject of controversy for years, and the saga took another turn at a West Bloomfield School District Board of Education meeting Sept. 18.
The meeting at West Bloomfield High School was attended by multiple residents and focused on whether to pass eight recommendations from the district’s Strategic Visioning Committee. The recommendations were to convert all four elementary schools in the district to kindergarten-grade five buildings; close the Roosevelt Elementary program at the end of the 2023/24 or 24/25 school year, depending upon enrollment and reduction of School of Choice; create preschool space at Sheiko Elementary, which is on the south side of the district, and Abbott, which is in the north; demolish the Roosevelt building and play-
ground; move the district’s Magnet Program to Scotch Elementary; move administrative and community service staff to Abbott; keep the current administration building for preschool and district storage throughout the 2023 bond; and plan for a future bond initiative that includes a new K-5 elementary at the Abbott site to serve students on the north end and new educational spaces at West Bloomfield High. The Board of Education passed the eight recommendations 5-2. Deborah Evans and Carol Finkelstein were the members who voted against the recommendations, with Julie Beaty, Stacy Brick-
man, Nelson Hersh, Ashleigh Davis and Wm. Art Holdsworth voting in favor of the recommendations. The issue that brought most attendees to the meeting and drew the biggest amount of attention was the recommendation to demolish Roosevelt, which is located in Keego Harbor. Students who previously attended that school have been going to Abbott since a roof collapsed in an unused room at Roosevelt last year. Abbott previously operated as a middle school in the district. WALLED LAKE — Walled Lake Consolidated Schools has announced that four students have been named semifinalists for the 69th National Merit Scholarship. Two of the students are from Walled Lake Northern, and two are from Walled Lake Western. Ryann Hunt and Anna Loszewski, from Northern, and Alyssa (Aly) Paolicchi and Kyra Wong, from Western, earned the distinction. “It means a lot to me,” Hunt stated via a press release. “Obviously, I couldn’t have done it without learning from my teachers and the teachers in this district, and I think they pushed us to this expectation and high standards that motivate us to achieve in these situations.” Loszewski also shared some thoughts. “I have high expectations for myself, and I want to succeed,” Loszewski stated in the release. “I have the opportunity to pursue the things that I am passionate about.”
Paolicchi also issued a statement about her achievement. “It’s a really cool honor, especially coming from this district and being able to represent our schools,” Paolicchi said. “It’s rewarding to see how all our studying has come to fruition.” Wong credited Western for the preparation it helps provide. “It means a lot to be recognized by this program that gives all students, all over the country, the opportunity to be rewarded for their efforts academically,” Wong stated via the release. According to the release, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards nearly $28 million in scholarships each year. “Finalists will be announced in the spring, then approximately half of those academically talented seniors will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title,” the release states.

ers last beat Adams in 2020 with Bellamy as head coach. A former wide receiver at the University of Michigan and for five different NFL franchises, Bellamy led West Bloomfield to a Division 1 State Championship Jan. 23, 2021, but his impact to the school ranges far beyond the field. “Ron (Bellamy) has done so much for the community and so much for the school,” West Bloomfield Athletic Director Eric Pierce said. “We all know of Ron’s on-thefield successes, and that’s a testament to how good of a coach he is, but the stuff he did in our school for the 11 years he was here off the field speaks even greater volume to the type of person that he is. He has such a big imprint on this school and the culture of this school.” Following a crushing last-minute 1713 loss to Lake Orion a week prior, West Bloomfield handled business Sept. 22 as they defeated Adams 36-32 at West Bloomfield High School. “Their (Lake Orion’s) good players made some good plays, and the advantage for us on Friday was that our good play-
ers started making plays,” West Bloomfield coach Zach Hilbers said. “We call it ‘winning time’ at the end of the game, and our guys stepped up and got the job done.” The Lakers took a 30-21 lead at the half and would tack on another score behind an 18-yard touchdown run by junior Kamren Flowers to take a 36-21 lead. Flowers ran for two touchdowns in the win. Adams would cut the lead late in the fourth quarter as sophomore quarterback Ryland Watters connected with senior tight end Brady Prieskorn for the late score, but the West Bloomfield defense stood tall to earn the win. While the first half had the making of an offensive shootout, the second half showcased the strength of the defensive units from both sides. Adams opened the scoring early in the first quarter off a West Bloomfield fumble as junior Paxton Battershell punched in a 5-yard touchdown run. Add on a wide open pass from Watters to senior wideout Drew Heppner for a 66-yard touchdown to give Adams a 14-7 lead, and Hilbers said the ingame adjustments were clear for the second half. “If you just take away two self-inflicted mistakes right off the jump — and they’re See FOOTBALL on page 20A

NATURE-BASED LEARNING ON THE RISE IN MICHIGAN BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com

onstantly inundated by technology, today’s kids are spending much of their free time hunched over a screen inside instead of playing outdoors. Parents, on the other hand, are busy looking for experiences that will allow their children to unplug and get active, sparking the demand for nature-based schools and programs across the nation. The drive to offer kids hands-on learning experiences outdoors — commonly referred to as the forest school or nature school movement — is a trend that’s gaining momentum nationwide, including in Michigan. In these schools and programs, children spend most — or all — of their time outside. Last year, the Farmington Hills Nature Center at Heritage Park opened a Nature Preschool for children ages 3-5. “We use the outdoors as our classroom, so we’re really building skills in a real-world learning environment. Skills like resilience, social skills, building a classroom community, and building a respect and curiosity for nature,” said Nature Center Supervisor Ashlie Smith. Students at the Heritage Park Nature
Preschool — a state licensed child care center with preschool teachers who are Forest School Certified — learn outside every day for the entire half-day class period they sign up for. If severe weather occurs, class activities are moved into a licensed classroom at the Nature Center. “It’s meant to be very immersive, where children are learning throughout multiple seasons. … They’re here every day, all winter and on rainy days too … so it really builds resilience, and kiddos understand that they are part of the world around them,” said Smith. To some, it may look like children at the Heritage Park Nature Preschool are simply playing outside for hours each day, but Smith said their time outdoors helps develop valuable skills and fosters traits like resilience, leadership, problem-solving and perseverance. “Instead of having a classroom that is set up for them with everything perfectly arranged, they are learning that things are dynamic, things change and the seasons change. The classroom is different every time they come in, which really builds their ability to become self-sufficient and empowers them in their learning,” she explained. See LEARNING on page 11A

made up of members of the Board of Education and educators, according to a press release issued by the district. Materials for a meeting agenda item list: Superintendent Dania H. Bazzi; Brickman; Beaty; Davis; Christy Forhan, who is a past board member; Eric Whitney, who is the district’s assistant superintendent of talent development and management, according to his LinkedIn profile; Christie Bueche, who is the district’s director of finance, according to LinkedIn; Jamie Stottlemyer, the district’s assistant superintendent of facilities and operations, according to the district website; Johanna Mracna, the assistant superintendent of school administration and innovation/interim talent development and management; Scott Long, the district’s assistant superintendent for learning services; Sonja James, the executive director of educational equity and inclusion; and Kendra Montante, the district’s former communications director and the current director of communications and strategic initiatives for the Troy school district. The release states that since April, the committee has collected and analyzed data, with the culmination of that work leading to the recommendations approved by the board Sept. 18. “The Strategic Visioning Committee was tasked with planning for the future of WBSD, while considering long-term sustainability, fiscal responsibility and facility planning,” the release states. “As a District, West Bloomfield must look to the future, and planning is key, especially when faced with declining enrollment in our district, county and state.” Bazzi shared some of her thoughts. “We understand the importance of including the input and ideas of the residents and families of WBSD and specifically Keego Harbor,” Bazzi stated via the release. “This was not an easy recommendation to make and we understand the emotions surrounding the decision. However, it’s crucial to clarify that listening to the community does not always mean we can fully agree with every perspective. It is important to remember our focus is education, and we are educating students for their future and not our past.” Roosevelt is over 100 years old and holds a special place for some in the Keego community. At the meeting, residents were given an opportunity to address the board, with the majority voicing opposition to the recommendation to demolish Roosevelt. Some of the comments addressed to board members focused on a desire to sell the building to a developer who can repurpose it for something that benefits the community, as opposed to demolishing it.
“The message has been 100% unanimous and crystal clear. If you have no use for Roosevelt, sell the beautiful, historical building in the heart of Keego Harbor to a developer who can and wants to renovate it,” one resident said at the meeting. “We are WB. We are your community. We are your constituents and taxpayers. You are spending our money. You asked for our feedback and our input, so tonight, please listen to it.” Another speaker shared what he believes is one of the district’s concerns. “What’s interesting about historical redevelopment is, in Michigan, Republicans and Democrats, everybody supports it — everybody has in their community some old building that means something to them, and when these buildings are saved, everybody feels good about it, and when they’re demolished, something is lost,” he said. “I can understand part of the concern the school board has because there’s a law that’s passed, you’re aware of it, that says if a governmental entity owns a building … and a charter school wants to buy it, they’re compelled to sell it. If this building becomes a charter school, there could be two or 300 kids taken out of your school system. Each kid gets what, $9,000 or $10,000 from the state each year? So, you’re talking about a loss to your school system of $2 million or more a year — year after year after year.” That same speaker offered what he considers a viable solution. “Sell the school immediately at a very nominal fee to a community group that might be established tomorrow morning,” he said. “You got smart attorneys; they could do it. They can create a nonprofit. … And then when this nonprofit entity finally markets it for the maximum amount possible, the clause says the school board gets the funds. You get your cake and eat it too.” Following the meeting, Holdsworth shared with the Beacon that there is still a possibility Roosevelt could be saved. “Even though this motion passed, there’s still that period of time that a solid, fully comprehensive redevelopment proposal could be submitted to the board,” he said. “Dr. Bazzi said that any viable redevelopment proposal could be brought to the board, so the clock is ticking now, is what I’m saying. The building’s not being taken down tomorrow. There’s that time period now, so if anyone really wants to do that, then they better get moving.” Without an accepted redevelopment proposal, it is expected that Roosevelt will be demolished sometime next summer. Holdsworth explained his rationale for supporting the recommendation of the Strategic Visioning Committee. “Because of all the hard work that the committee did,” he said. “They’re the ones that did all the analysis. They’re the ones that came up with these recommendations. As a board member that wasn’t involved in that, I See ROOSEVELT on page 22A

In 2019, Bailey Lininger opened Firefly Forest School to better connect students with the natural world. “Both parents and educators want kids to experience an unplugged childhood as much as they can — one where they can dig for worms, balance on fallen tree trunks and splash in puddles,” said Lininger, the director of Firefly Forest School. Firefly Forest School provides southeast Michigan children ages 3-10 with immersive, nature-based learning through enrichment programming from nature preserves in the metro Detroit area. “We love being able to complement a more traditional experience at a more traditional school with some time to just run and be free and play and climb and build and dig and do all the things that are a really important part of being a kid,” Lininger said. Every class is held entirely outdoors every day, rain or shine, even in the chilly winter temperatures. “We’re not just going outside for 20 minutes to play at recess or only when it’s nice and sunny and 75 degrees. We really

from page 8A
work with our families and our kids to embrace all weather,” Lininger said. Armed with the proper attire and outdoor gear, students are taught how to embrace the world around them as it is and use it as their classroom. “The more time for unstructured play that you give kids in the natural world, the more creative they are, the more they learn, the more they deepen their growth and fine motor skills, the more they are able to explore and learn independently instead of just being guided, and the more opportunities they are given to be creative problem solvers, to think critically about things, to learn to be adaptable and flexible,” added Lininger. Students are free to run, jump, splash and explore and, in the process, they are constantly learning and growing. “One of the things that we really focus on in our program is instilling a sense of selfefficacy and capability in our kids. We’re really focused on giving our kids the chance to feel competent and capable — that’s something that we see a ton of growth in,” Lininger said. “We see a lot of confidence too.” Call Staff Writer Mary Beth Almond at (586) 498-1060.

ROOM-BY-ROOM TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS
A
ccording to some interior designers, watching home improvement shows can give some people the wrong idea. Shows that feature homes that are remodeled and renovated can make for great entertainment, but some educational components may be missing. As can often be the case with “reality” TV, what appears on the television screen doesn’t necessarily jive with the real world. Jennifer Asmar is the owner of Asmar Interiors, which is based out of Birmingham. “Everybody thinks doing design work is like HGTV — they pick what they want and then one week later it’s done,” Asmar said. “Things that are done properly take time, and things that you want done correctly need planning. It’s not a one-to-two-week project — nothing should be.” Amy Miller Weinstein owns AMW Design Studio, based out of Birmingham, and she also wanted to set the record straight about the difference between television and real-world home improvement projects. “It’s not like it is on TV at all, the decisionmaking or any of that,” Miller Weinstein said. “The timeline that they create just doesn’t even exist in the real world. … It’s very staged. It doesn’t happen in a week.” Asmar shared a more realistic scenario. “Everything is custom for what I do, and most designers do, so there is no standard cost or standard time frame, because we do custom projects, so everything is all dependent on the client and the level of the job,” she said. “To put a number and time on anything is not realistic. … Everything depends on what you’re doing.” Miller Weinstein discussed the current in-
terior design trends that she has been observing. “I think people are looking for a simpler way of living in their house that’s comfortable and easy,” she said. “There’s a lot of great indoor outdoor fabrics right now that are pet-friendly (and) child-friendly. People don’t want stuffy anymore; they want comfort (and) ease. Whatever their taste level may be, whether it’s traditional, transitional or contemporary, there are great new materials and things available on the market that can address all of that.” Living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms are popular areas for home improvement projects, and Asmar shared tips for improving each. “Usually creating some kind of focal point in the room, whether it be the fireplace wall or an art wall, or something dramatic like that — there’s a focal point in the room,” she said of living rooms. “The bathroom should be beautifully done and according to your requirements in life. Kitchens are all about functionality, so you need to make sure you have the proper working space, the proper room to live your life the way you do. The kitchen is the heart of the home, so it needs to be not only beautiful, but functional as well.” As for improving the look of a bedroom, Miller Weinstein suggests updating lamps and bedding, adding a bench at the end of a bed, minimizing unnecessary furniture, and adding drapery or window treatments. “Those are all things you can do without buying new furniture,” she said. “You can even paint your furniture. If it’s old, stodgy wood pieces, painting them will sort of bring them into this day and age.” Both Asmar and Miller Weinstein typically work on multiple rooms when hired for projects. “Common spots people want to update right now are kitchens, primary bathrooms,

Interior designers share ways to update various rooms in a home at an event at the Michigan Design Center in Troy Aug. 25. Pictured, from left, are Jennifer Asmar, from Asmar Interiors; Sherry Tattrie, from Sherry Tattrie Interiors; Amy Miller Weinstein, from AMW Design Studio; and Dawn Jacobs, from Artichoke Interiors. primary bedrooms — spaces in general, with closeting,” Miller Weinstein said. “I get requests for lower levels — basements that they (want to) spruce up.” Asmar shared what she thinks is another current trend. “Most people are doing more streamline modern — not as heavy traditional,” she said. “It seems like less is more.” Oakland Community College offers an associate of applied science degree in interior design, and from the perspective of Michelle Pergeau-Dudgeon, who is the program coordinator of the interior design program at OCC, there is something that doesn’t get enough attention in homes. “People underestimate lighting, and that’s a passion that I brought when I began teaching, and how I got my first teaching course was lighting and color,” Pergeau-Dudgeon said. “That’s something I’m really pushing with my students — lighting cannot happen too early. Once that drywall goes up, it’s a lot harder for the electrician. Never underestimate the power of lighting.” Pergeau-Dudgeon is of the opinion that interior designers are effective problem-solvers for homeowners. Birmingham resident Katie Prior, who decided to utilize the services of an interior designer, might agree with that description. After going to someone’s home and seeing Miller Weinstein’s work, Prior reached out to her. That was approximately 20 years ago, and since then, Miller Weinstein has assisted Prior on a variety of home improvement projects.
Prior shared the benefit of calling on Miller Weinstein for assistance. “You get full service, and with that, I’m referring to beginning with an overall design plan, making selections and then implementing all of those moving pieces until you have the final product,” Prior said. Miller Weinstein shared her perspective as to why hiring an interior designer is worth the cost for those who want to improve the looks of their homes. “My belief is that in the long run we save you money because you don’t make mistakes,” she said. “If you listen to your designer, you’re being guided properly about all the things, all the decisions. … A good designer can pluck out tasteful, timeless choices, even at a Home Depot, a Menards or someplace like that. … (If) you’re spending money, you might as well spend it smart.” Asmar agreed. “If you want it done correctly with a professional, you should listen to that professional, because doing things on your own can cost you money through mistakes,” she said. “So if you’re willing to spend a little bit more with a designer, in the end you can end up saving yourself a whole headache and a whole list of mistakes, because we’re the professionals and we know what to do.” Asmar can be reached via email at jennifer@asmarinteriors.com. Tre Mosley, a fifth-year wideout at Michigan State University and a West Bloomfield High School graduate, will be holding a meet-and-greet 4-7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Lefty’s Cheesesteak, 101 N. Telegraph Road in Waterford. Photo provided by Net Sports Management
from page 3A
Johnny Hamood, founder of Net Sports Management, whom Mosley signed with in late August. “It’s going to be cool because it’s going to be my first time being able to do an event back at Pontiac,” said Mosley, whose hometown is Pontiac. “When Johnny (Hamood) brought it up to me, it was hard for me to say no to that because this is my city. It’s close to home, and it’ll be cool for everyone around the area to come out and support.” Mosley will be signing T-shirts with the purchase of a meal at Lefty’s, and there will be photo opportunities and music for attendees as well. All tips that Lefty’s receives will go toward a charity of Mosley’s choosing. Lefty’s has had working relationships with football athletes in the past, including Barry Sanders and Darius Slay. With the location being just a few miles away from Mosley’s home in Pontiac, Hamood said it was a no-brainer to hold an event with Lefty’s. “It was really a match made in heaven being where (Tre’s) from,” Hamood said. “(Berry) has the stores out in Waterford, and
he knew Tre and knows Tre’s father pretty well, so it really made a lot of sense to do something with Lefty’s.” Lefty’s employees at the Waterford location and Mosley’s father, Bert Mosley, have had an ongoing friendship. He’s known as the man always sporting the Michigan State attire and talking to employees about his son. “My dad goes there all the time, which is crazy,” Tre Mosley said. “That exact location.” So when Tre Mosley and Hamood went to Lefty’s for the preliminary meeting before the event, the employees knew exactly who he was. “It’s funny because, when we met, all the guys behind the counter were like, ‘Oh, we know your pops. He always comes in with the Michigan State hoodie and talks about his son, the wide receiver,’” Hamood said. Mosley will also be working behind the counter during the event, which shouldn’t be a difficult task for the sure-handed wideout. Though it’ll be his first time behind the counter at Lefty’s, Mosley said he’s confident he’ll deliver. “I can do a little something-something,” Mosley said. good, so they might have scored anyway — but we gave it to them,” Hilbers said. “I think just eliminating those mistakes made it a little bit easier for us.” West Bloomfield senior quarterback Reqez Nance was lethal all night, throwing for three first-half touchdown passes to three different receivers. Nance found junior wideout Elisha Durham for a 12-yard touchdown to open the scoring for West Bloomfield, and then connected for a pair of 22-yard touchdown throws to senior standout Brandon Davis-Swain and senior Nigel Dunton. It was the rebound game Nance needed after last week’s loss, and he looked as sharp as can be. “He’s got so much game experience and just knows what everyone is supposed to be doing on every single play,” Hilbers said. “It shows. He knows where the ball is supposed to go.” Watters also tallied a 25-yard touchdown pass to junior Lachlan Tillotson in the loss. West Bloomfield faced Clarkston on the road and Adams hosted Lake Orion Sept. 29, after press time. Look for the results at candgnews.com/news/oaa-football-2023. can’t second-guess them. I have to trust their opinion, that these eight recommendations they brought forward are the right ones.” Some residents who spoke at the meeting conveyed how meaningful the Roosevelt building is to the Keego community. “I’m deeply, deeply saddened that there’s the possibility of demolishing this beautiful and historically valuable building,” one resident said. “It’s been the heart of the community for over 100 years. … In 2017, Keego Harbor voters overwhelmingly supported a bond that promised $3 million to renovate, restore (and) repurpose the Roosevelt building. If that had been properly used, I suspect that any issues that confront Roosevelt today would have been addressed.” One resident said that he has a master’s degree in structural engineering, and stated that the building is structurally sound. Another resident stressed the level of support that exists to save Roosevelt. “Keego Harbor officials and citizens have put in countless hours clearly spelling out to the school board that we will be crushed if you demolish our 103-year-old historic building in the heart of our little city,” the resident said. “We accept the fact that our elementary school will be eliminated, but don’t demolish our building.” Keego Mayor Rob Kalman was among those who spoke at the meeting. He said he’s not OK with the Roosevelt building being demolished. “I’m not OK with (it), nor are any of my fellow council people,” Kalman said. “I think we’ve heard from people tonight, and developers in the audience — the building can be restored and repurposed. … The building does hold a special place; it’s got history. … Take some time to talk to developers.”
One of the speakers at the meeting was a fourth-grade student. “I have been at Roosevelt since I was in kindergarten,” she said. “Everybody there is super nice, and I do not like them to leave. … It’s the best school I could ever go to and everybody’s nice there.” Oakland County Commissioner Bob Hoffman also addressed Board of Education members at the meeting. “I’m very disappointed in the lack of vision from this board when it comes to saving a historic, iconic building,” he said. “I join with these people in here, saying, you need to take a timeout, step back, and table this — study it some more. … Don’t tear down a historic building.” Toward the end of the meeting, supporters of the recommendation also addressed the board. “I’m confident in the strategic visioning recommendations that you put forth, including the recommendation to demolish Roosevelt,” one speaker said. “I’m sure this decision was not made lightly and was made after months, if not years, of thoughtful consideration and discussion with all the interested parties. It was made in the best interest of all students in the West Bloomfield School District. Demolishing the building will increase the number of developers interested in the property and will allow creative uses of the land.” Another resident who supported the decision called for unity. “In reading over the 2023 strategic visioning recommendations, it’s apparent that due diligence, much research and thought and time, went into each of the recommendations, including closing and tearing down Roosevelt,” she said. “It’s more important than ever for everyone to come together as one community and work with the school district as an ally, instead of tearing it apart behind the scenes.”

cally irresponsible to demolish a building that is important to a community without first making a reasonable attempt.” The district’s release addressed one of the concerns of residents. “Some in the community have asked why the process was rushed,” the release states. “This decision has been under discussion for over a decade with formal studies in 2012, 2020, and this year. Various consultants have consistently recommended this school closure.” Brickman is the Board of Education president, and she also shared her thoughts. “Not being able to keep all our schools open in the face of declining enrollment does not mean we don’t hear our community,” Brickman stated via the release. “It means we have taken the responsibility of allocating our finite resources seriously. We’re doing the hard work of rightsizing our district in order to protect the quality of the programs we provide and ensuring financial and long term sustainability.”

Following public comments, Evans shared her rationale for opposing the recommendation. “The recommendation proposed by the committee does not squarely align to our goals, our mission or our vision,” Evans said. “Until all of our students are considered in the strategic plan for 10 (years), I do not support demolishing any of our capital assets until we can determine how we can best meet our educational goals with the assets that we have. How will we support our own students in our buildings?” Finkelstein is a proponent of giving developers an opportunity to come up with a solution that could save Roosevelt. “We have interest from five different developers already and the property isn’t even on the market,” Finkelstein said. “This board has an obligation to collect necessary data and to make an informed decision prior to commencing demolition. We don’t even have … correct estimates for abatement and demolition, and this is fiscally irresponsible. It is fis-
