EMU names equipment room for Roseville grad BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE/YPSILANTI — “Fast” Eddie Mizinski has always been a good sport. Whether he was scoring touchdowns when playing football at Roseville High School (Class of 1971) or supporting athletic programs at Eastern Michigan University as an alumnus, Mizinski could always be counted on. The lifelong Roseville Community Schools student,
who now resides in Grand Blanc, was honored recently when the athletic equipment room at EMU was named after him. “It was really sweet. I think it was a really nice deal,” Mizinski said. “EMU built a new athletic complex. The equipment room is attached to it. It’s a state-of-the-art facility.” EMU offers a number of sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, basketball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse and bowling. Every time an EMU athlete or coach enters the equipment room, they are greeted by the name “FAST EDDIE MIZINSKI” in large letters on the door. See FAST on page 2A

EASTPOINTE — A significant episode in a long line of controversies involving the current mayor of Eastpointe is drawing to an end. On Sept. 28, Eastpointe Mayor Monique Owens pleaded no contest to one count of making a false statement about her financial condition, a one-year misdemeanor, in the Macomb County Circuit Court. In addition to the charge, Owens was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to the county. According to a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, the office requires that every defendant pays restitution in advance of a plea to ensure that the victim is made financially whole. Owens “Monique Owens, like any other defendant, was held responsible for her actions and required to pay full restitution before today’s plea,” the press release states. Owens was originally facing one charge of false pretenses of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, a five-year felony, in connection to applying for a grant under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act. That charge was dismissed as part of the plea. In April 2020, Macomb County received $152 million

The honor is fitting for the wide receiver who made his mark on the football field while attending EMU from 1971 to 1975. Wearing jersey No. 13, the star athlete was a three-year letterman and is the 2011 Hall of Fame Ron Oestrike Distinguished Service inductee. He graduated from EMU in 1976 and has been an active member of the alumni ever since. Mizinski and Susan, his wife of 48 years, support the athletics program financially and travel with the football team. “The kids, they work hard,” Mizinski said. “I always loved teamwork. I liked working with the team. I like passing that information on to the younger kids.” Mizinski’s love for sports is a throwback to his childhood. He was “a gym rat” when attending the now-closed Washington Elementary School in Roseville. When he found out about the East Detroit Tiger Cats youth football flag tackle prep program, he made sure to join. Playing football and running track while at RHS is what earned him the moniker “Fast” Eddie Mizinski. Because of his prowess, he became a Division I full scholarship letter winner. “I was really lucky to get some great coaches at Roseville High School. They were
great teachers and outstanding coaches,” Mizinski said. “They were really hard on you. They inspired me to keep on going. They made you succeed in life.” He used that same discipline for 35 years while teaching and coaching in various locations, including the W.J. Maxey Boys Training School in Whitmore Lake. “It was a juvenile youth detention facility,” Mizinski said. “A lot of the kids had zero guidance. They were in the streets doing crime since the age of 8 and up.” Mizinski used his experiences on the field to get through to the young men who lived troubled lives. “If you’re firm, fair and honest, they will listen,” Mizinski said. “We had to keep them busy. They responded very well.” He eventually found his way back to the classrooms of Roseville, teaching and coaching for several years at RHS, Roseville Junior High School and Eastland Junior High School, which are now middle schools. He even taught with current Roseville Community Schools Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski. The two have another connection: Blaszkowski also attended EMU. Now retired, Mizinski looks back fondly on his years as an educator. “I miss teaching,” the retiree said. “I really miss coaching.”
Mizinski is trying to get a new club off the ground. He’s involved with the “R Club,” a group of alumni letter winners who graduated as Brablec High School Cougars, RHS Wildcats or RHS Panthers, which is the most recent mascot for the school. “It’s a club for former letter winners who support athletic programs,” Blaszkowski said. “It just started, and Eddie has been the key to
kicking it off. Right now we’re soliciting members. Right now we’re just trying to get people connected. I think it’s a good thing. It instills that sense of family.” For more information, or to sign up for the “R” Club, contact RHS Athletic Director Keith Marzec at kmarzec@roseville.k12.mi.us. Council OKs sanitary sewer cleaning cost increase BY MARIA ALLARD
allard@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — Two years ago, in 2021, the city of Eastpointe began a citywide sanitary sewer cleaning and television investigation program that would take two and a half years to complete.
About 85% of the city’s sanitary system has been cleaned and televised under the program. However, it was recently revealed that the project will cost $245,000 more than anticipated. At the Sept. 19 Eastpointe City Council meeting, the council voted 4-1 to approve contract modification No. 1 to the Sanitary Sewer Cleaning and Closed Circuit Television Investiga-
tion, through Doetsch Industrial Services, based in Warren, for the amount of $170,000, increasing the total construction cost of the project to $1,432,625. The vote also approved spending an additional $75,000 for construction administration and observation services necessary to complete the See SEWER on page 13A

CRIME WATCH Man arrested for drunken driving
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, a 46-year-old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated at around 1:15 a.m. Sept. 25, as he was heading southbound on Gratiot Avenue. He was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed in his 1995 Chevrolet Suburban while committing other traffic violations. A traffic stop was conducted, and officers noticed that the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The driver allegedly agreed to a preliminary breath test, which yielded results of 0.235% blood alcohol content — almost three times the legal limit. Officers also attempted to administer standard field sobriety tests, but the driver was allegedly argumentative and disruptive. He was arrested. Police said that his history shows a prior conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, so a second offense charge has been requested from the Macomb County prosecutor. The investigation was ongoing.
Feud at salon
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, officers were dispatched to a local business sometime on Sept. 23 in response to a fight and theft that had taken place there. The business is a salon located in the area of 10 Mile Road. A 19-year-old woman reportedly had an eyelash appointment and had paid a $20 deposit. Once the technician realized the business did not have the requested eyelash color, the client allegedly asked for her deposit back. The technician reportedly told the client that the deposit was nonrefundable, reminding her that she had been advised of this when she signed up for the appointment.
That’s when the client allegedly left the establishment and returned a short time later with her 41-year-old mother, who demanded that her daughter’s deposit be returned. When the employees at the salon refused to comply, the mother reportedly went to the display rack and started to grab perfume and candle boxes that were for sale. She allegedly told the employees that she was getting her daughter’s money back. The suspect also took an employee’s cell phone, which had been sitting on the salon counter. When the salon employees tried to stop both customers from leaving the store, a fight took place, during which a standup mirror was broken. Both suspects then fled the scene prior to officers arriving. The suspects have been identified, police said, and a detective has been assigned to the case.
Fraud attempted at bank
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, a 50-year-old man attempted to defraud a bank of thousands of dollars sometime on Sept. 22. The establishment was a Flagstar Bank located on Gratiot Avenue. The suspect reportedly attempted to cash a fraudulent $2,500 check using a fraudulent identification card. Police said that the same suspect had reportedly committed a similar crime the day prior in the city of Warren, in which he cashed a fraudulent check for $10,000. The bank staff and manager realized that a crime was taking place and reportedly stalled the suspect until police arrived. The suspect was positively identified and arrested, police said. The case is being presented to the Macomb County prosecutor for possible charges. If you know more about these crimes or others, call Eastpointe police at (586) 4455100. — Andy Kozlowski
School board approves Chromebook carts purchase BY MARIA ALLARD
allard@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — A total of 35 Chromebook carts are on order for Eastpointe High School, and as soon as they arrive, each classroom at EHS will get one. At the Sept. 25 Eastpointe Community Schools Board of Education meeting, the school board voted 7-0 to purchase the Chromebook carts for the high school. “The carts will stay in the classrooms. The (Chromebooks) will get checked out as the students come into the classroom and then returned at the end of the class,” district Technology & School Safety Coordinator Danny Laethem said at the meeting. “The teachers and students will obviously monitor what’s in the cart. That should help reduce both device breakage and lost devices.” The Chromebooks are charged when on the cart. A Chromebook, similar to a laptop computer, is designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents
existing in what is known as the “cloud.” The Chromebooks are used as another tool for learning, research projects and daily assignments. Students can view text, photos, videos and more on the devices. “This will allow us to meet that goal of placing a cart in each classroom so it’s available for the students to go along with the new curriculum that we are rolling out across the district,” Laethem said. “The cart gets stored in the classrooms. It’s secured with padlocks. The back of the carts are also locked so that no cables come up missing.” The district provided Chromebooks to its high school students to use at home when classes went virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic. The students were required to return the devices to the high school when the district returned to inperson learning. When students had the Chromebooks in their possession, educators experienced issues with loss and breakage of devices, uncharged Chromebooks, and students See CARTS on page 13A

school and middle school cross country, as well as high school soccer,” Ball said. “We are continuing to offer the high school football, high school and middle school volleyball, and then sideline cheer at both levels as well.” This winter, Ball said, the district will expand to offer competitive cheer, boys and girls basketball at both levels, high school and middle school wrestling, high school boys and girls bowling, and sideline cheer at Eastpointe Middle School. Looking forward to spring, there will be high school and middle school track, high school boys golf, and baseball and softball. While at the podium, Ball gave a brief summary regarding how the fall teams are performing. One athlete, for instance, is participating in three different sports this fall. “(Middle school) football returning was a big point of pride for me. We were able to bring that back this year, and you can see we have almost 40 athletes involved,” Ball said. “Our first game, we got a nice win against Kennedy.” He said both the high school and volleyball teams started off the season by winning their games. “It was great to see high school varsity soccer return to the field at Forest Park,” Ball said, adding that the team won its first game against Hazel Park the previous week. “We started the season being downsided playing eight (players) versus 11, which is a challenge for our athletes. One of the great things about our coaches is most of them have taken a ‘bring the athlete anytime they come to us attitude,’ so we are still adding athletes to our teams as we speak. “Our high school soccer team was able

to round out to a full 11, as well as have a sub,” Ball said. “We do have new equipment coming for them, new soccer goals and benches to be installed at the facility.” During the meeting, school board Treasurer Robert Roscoe inquired about AEDs. An automated external defibrillator is used to help a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The medical device can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if needed, deliver an electrical shock to help the heart reestablish an effective rhythm. “The defibrillators, do you have them? How far are they apart and how quick can we get to them?” Roscoe asked. “We want to know that our children are safe. Can you give us a synopsis on what’s going on with that?” Ball said that all the coaches are trained to use the AED devices and in CPR and first aid. “We do have emergency action plans for each facility that we’re at,” Ball said. “At each of our facilities, we have an AED directly outside of the gym. For our off-site facilities when our coaches travel, we do have a travel AED they are required to take with them.” The Eastpointe High School cheerleading team is selling “Cheer for the Cure” T-shirts as a team fundraiser and to raise breast cancer awareness during the Pink Out home game Oct. 20. NATURE-BASED LEARNING ON THE RISE IN MICHIGAN

‘IT REALLY BUILDS RESILIENCE, AND KIDDOS UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE PART OF THE WORLD AROUND THEM’ BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com
METRO DETROIT — Constantly inundated by technology, today’s kids are spending much of their free time hunched over a screen inside instead of playing outdoors. Parents, on the other hand, are busy looking for experiences that will allow their children to unplug and get active, sparking the demand for nature-based schools and programs across the nation. The drive to offer kids hands-on learning experiences outdoors — commonly referred to as the forest school or nature school movement — is a trend that’s gaining momentum nationwide, including in Michigan. In these schools and programs, children spend most — or all — of their time outside. Last year, the Farmington Hills Nature Center at Heritage Park opened a Nature Preschool for children ages 3-5. “We use the outdoors as our classroom, so we’re really building skills in a real-world learning environment. Skills like resilience, social skills, building a classroom community, and building a respect and curiosity for nature,” said Nature Center Supervisor Ashlie Smith. Students at the Heritage Park Nature Preschool — a state licensed child care center with preschool teachers who are Forest School Certified — learn outside every day for the entire half-day class period they sign up for. If severe weather occurs, class activities are moved into a licensed classroom at the See LEARNING on page 14A
Ford House Offers Educational Programs For All Ages
The kids are back in school, but they aren’t the only ones learning something new this fall. The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores is offering programs for adults and youths that promise to be enlightening, engaging and educational. “We really focus on all learners,” Ford House Director of Education Jason Dake said. “We want to provide educational programs for everyone.” Edsel and Eleanor Ford were known for their impeccable sense of style along with their efforts to protect their estate’s natural environment, so a sustainability talk about fashion at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Visitor Center is an ideal fit. Fashion designer, stylist and consultant Paulina Petkoski — who worked with designers including Calvin Klein, Isaac Mizrahi, Diane Von Furstenberg and Marc Jacobs — will discuss how the fashion industry is addressing this issue and why it’s so important. Make a beautiful plate or candleholder using the fused glass technique during a Maker Studio workshop at 1 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Visitor Center. Artist and educator Helen Agius-Andreae will lead participants as they design their piece, which will be fused and slumped in a kiln and ready for pickup from
the Ford House two weeks later. All materials are supplied — just bring your imagination. No experience is necessary.
See spaces inside the house not normally open to visitors during the “Nooks & Crannies” guided tours on various dates Oct. 6 through Dec. 31. Participants will traverse private stairways, the attic, the basement, the infirmary and the underground tunnel to the Powerhouse. Each “Nooks & Crannies” tour is only open to eight people because it takes participants into some small spaces. Because it involves climbing multiple flights of stairs, it’s not wheelchair accessible. Dake said this is “one of our more popular house tours.” It’s usually only offered during the fall and winter. Advance registration for all programs is strongly recommended as space is limited. To register or for more information, visit www.fordhouse.org/events/.

EASTPOINTE — On Sept. 24, the Eastpointe Lions Club presented the Eastpointe Fire & Rescue Department with a $1,000 check to purchase smoke detectors for residents. The donation will provide the department with approximately 110 smoke detectors. The devices will be available in the next few weeks by appointment at the fire station, located at 16370 Nine Mile Road. Residents can call the Eastpointe fire marshal at (586) 445-5056 to make an appointment to pick up a smoke detector. To be eligible for a detector, residents must own their homes, as the city rental code provides that landlords are responsible for having their properties equipped with operational smoke detectors. — Maria Allard

Enjoy a laugh, help a family in need METRO DETROIT — The nonprofit Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan will hold its annual comedy show fundraiser — featuring Emmy Award-winner Paul Mercurio — at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak. Tickets cost $80 per person and include a buffet dinner, live auction and 50/50 raffle. The Furniture Bank provides families across metro Detroit with crucial furnishings, such as beds and mattresses, so that parents and children can get a good night’s sleep and don’t have to sleep on the floor. This is made possible by donations of cash and gently used furniture. The need is especially acute now, as Furniture Bank officials report that furniture donations are down 15% while the organization has seen a 30% spike in the number of families seeking their help since last year. “The pandemic prompted many people to get rid of their furniture, but now that we
are on the other side, we’ve seen furniture donations drop,” Furniture Bank Executive Director Rob Boyle said in a press release. “At the same time, our referrals for families in need continue to rise. This, coupled with the increasing costs of inflation and fuel, makes it even more challenging to provide essential furniture items to people who need them most. Our mission is to ensure that children and families have beds to sleep in, tables to eat on, and other basic comforts so that they can rebuild their lives and live with dignity.” Mercurio, who received Emmy and Peabody awards for his work on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” has also had his own hit one-man Broadway show. He grew up in his family’s furniture business. For tickets, email events@FurnitureBank.org or call (248) 332-1300. For more about making a furniture donation, visit furniture-bank.org. — K. owned and had between 100-249 employees.” “When a public figure acknowledges their guilt, takes responsibility for their actions and pays full restitution, it sends a powerful message that no one is above the law,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a prepared statement. through the act, which was then spread throughout the county. In November of that year, Owens applied for a grant and received $10,000 from the money that the county had received. The Prosecutor’s Office said in the press release that Owens, in applying for the grant, had falsely stated “her business was 51% veteran

leaving devices at home. Currently, the students do not have their own Chromebooks assigned to them. They use different ones per classroom. If a student needs a Chromebook after school, they will still be able to check one out from the media center, “so they have a device at home should they need one,” Laethem said. During the meeting, district Assistant Superintendent Stephanie Fleming commented on the purchase recommendation. “We currently do have carts in our schools. We don’t have one per classroom, so this would be an increase to allow teachers to have a cart for every single classroom,” she said. “This ensures that they’re charged. If they break, we have spares on hand that we can swap out. “We’re also inventorying everything. When kids can check them out, then we’re
better able to monitor and make sure that the devices they are checking out are actually working and that they’re not at home broken,” Fleming said. “This removes those barriers and our teachers are able to then have quality, good access to technology to be able to deliver the curriculum. Our kids are going to have access to those things as well every day when they come in.” During the pandemic, the district provided Chromebooks as needed to students in grades 3-12 while the K-2 students used iPads. The total purchase of the Chromebook carts for the high school cost $37,100 from Sehi Computer Products Inc., in Rochester Hills. School officials used ESSER III funds for the purchase of the carts. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds — two under President Donald Trump and a third under President Joe Biden — were federal funds distributed to assist public schools across the state with funding that was lost during the pandemic.

project. Council member Cardi DeMonaco Jr. questioned the additional cost and voted against the measure. “It seems like that’s much higher than the rate we’d be charged for the rest of the project,” he said. “We’ve already started this project. It’s a slight addition and this is like 40-something percent on the extra work. We should be paying the 11.5% (for construction administration and observation services) we always pay, roughly, on a public works project. I don’t know why we’d be paying four times the price for this part of the project than we’d be paying for the rest of it.” At the meeting, Ryan Kern, senior project engineer with Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick Inc., based in Shelby Township, spoke about the increase. “It’s a 2 1/2-year-long project, so we’re providing a full-time inspector out on the site to make sure everything is cleaned and televised properly. There’s been a lot more heavy cleaning involved with this project than what was anticipated,” Kern said. The heavy cleaning increase has resulted in more hours for the full-time construction observation services on-site. The cleaning program allows the city to identify locations of defective sewer to be able to prioritize repairs based upon available water and sewer funding and potential grant opportunities. According to city documents, 85% of the city has been completed. An area between Stephens and 10 Mile roads east of Gratiot Avenue still needs to be completed. “We anticipated 25% of the sewer system would require heavy cleaning, and it’s more so about 40% to 50% of the system that required heavy cleaning. That’s why there’s a higher cost to this. We also review the video and make recommendations for future sewer rehab and put together a comprehensive master plan for future sewer repairs and rehabilitation,” Kern said. “There really hasn’t been a comprehensive citywide sewer cleaning and televising program. It’s just been parts here and there throughout the years.” According to Kern, the original estimate included a 10% contingency into the project, but the previous public works director did not want the contingency in the award. “That’s part of why this increase is coming in front of you,” Kern said. Council member Stacy Cobb-Muñiz asked what the alternative was if the increase wasn’t approved. If the agenda item wasn’t approved, the project would not be completed. “If we do not complete the project, that opens us up for liability for sewer backups if we have not cleaned and televised the whole system,” Finance Director Randall Blum said. “So if anything happened in the area that was not completed, we would have an issue. It’s imperative that we get it done.” Call Staff Writer Maria Allard at (586) 498-1045.

Nature Center. “It’s meant to be very immersive, where children are learning throughout multiple seasons. … They’re here every day, all winter and on rainy days too … so it really builds resilience, and kiddos understand that they are part of the world around them,” said Smith. To some, it may look like children at the Heritage Park Nature Preschool are simply playing outside for hours each day, but Smith said their time outdoors helps develop valuable skills and fosters traits like resilience, leadership, problem-solving and perseverance. “Instead of having a classroom that is set up for them with everything perfectly arranged, they are learning that things are dynamic, things change and the seasons change. The classroom is different every time they come in, which really builds their ability to become self-sufficient and empowers them in their learning,” she explained. In 2019, Bailey Lininger opened Firefly Forest School to better connect students with the natural world. “Both parents and educators want kids
the more they deepen their growth and fine motor skills, the more they are able to explore and learn independently instead of just being guided, and the more opportunities they are given to be creative problem solvers, to think critically about things, to learn to be adaptable and flexible,” added Lininger. Students are free to run, jump, splash and explore and, in the process, they are con-
stantly learning and growing. “One of the things that we really focus on in our program is instilling a sense of selfefficacy and capability in our kids. We’re really focused on giving our kids the chance to feel competent and capable — that’s something that we see a ton of growth in,” Lininger said. “We see a lot of confidence too.”

to experience an unplugged childhood as much as they can — one where they can dig for worms, balance on fallen tree trunks and splash in puddles,” said Lininger, the director of Firefly Forest School. Firefly Forest School provides southeast Michigan children ages 3-10 with immersive, nature-based learning through enrichment programming from nature preserves in the metro Detroit area. “We love being able to complement a more traditional experience at a more traditional school with some time to just run and be free and play and climb and build and dig and do all the things that are a really important part of being a kid,” Lininger said. Every class is held entirely outdoors every day, rain or shine, even in the chilly winter temperatures. “We’re not just going outside for 20 minutes to play at recess or only when it’s nice and sunny and 75 degrees. We really work with our families and our kids to embrace all weather,” Lininger said. Armed with the proper attire and outdoor gear, students are taught how to embrace the world around them as it is and use it as their classroom. “The more time for unstructured play that you give kids in the natural world, the more creative they are, the more they learn,
