ROCHESTER — This fall, the community is invited to head to downtown Rochester to enjoy a variety of different artforms. Downtown Rochester’s fourth annual Magical Mural Tour welcomes the art of 19 muralists, on display throughout the downtown area through Oct. 16. “Over the last two years or so we have really tried to lean in on doing more art initiatives for downtown,” said Kristi Trevarrow, the executive director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority. Jayson Blake joins RCS Board of Education BOARD MEMBER CITES LEFTLEANING POLITICS FOR NO VOTE BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com
ROCHESTER/ROCHESTER HILLS/OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — The Rochester Community Schools Board of Education has selected Jayson Blake as its new trustee. Blake was one of six candidates — also including Lori Baggot, Gary Cai, Briton Moffitt, Marcella Nasr and Heather Tyler — to be interviewed for the appointment Sept. 27. Blake was appointed by the school board in a 5-1 vote to fill the trustee position vacated by Kristin Bull, who submitted her letter of resignation effective Aug. 30. Bull said the RCS Board has been an integral part of her — and her family’s — lives for the past nine years. “Serving this community was one of my greatest joys. I am proud of the work I was a part of during the time I served, and I will continue to advocate for public education in all the ways I can. I am very much looking forward to shifting all of my attention right now to priorities in my perBlake sonal life — mainly, on being a mom,” Bull said in an email. Blake will serve on the board until Bull’s original term expires Dec. 31, 2024. Blake, a parent of a third grader in the district, earned a juris doctor degree and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan. The district said he has also received numerous awards and recognition for his professional experience as a litigator. During the Sept. 27 board meeting, Blake explained why he would be an asset to the board. “I think I would be a good addition because I have skills and disposition that would help the board. I mentioned I am an attorney, and I see, constantly, legal issues are coming up before this board. You’re having a great deal of discussion about things, and a lot of them are things I know about,” he said, citing his knowledge about attorney-client privilege and legal invoices as a few minor examples. “I don’t know what legal issues there are coming forward, but I think I am going to be able

World Trade Center remnant finds new home at Rochester Fire Department BY MARY BETH ALMOND malmond@candgnews.com
ROCHESTER — Twenty-two years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a piece of steel from the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York City has found a permanent home at Heroes’ Point at the Rochester Fire Station. Heroes’ Point, officials said, was designed to be a peaceful and respectful place of honor and reflection for the community. The monument — which has space for community gatherings, dedications and announcements — includes benches, a fountain, four pollinator gardens, engraved bricks, and now, a piece of steel from the south tower, recovered after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The steel remnant was donated to Rita Duff, a member of the Rochester Fire Department. Duff has a great-grandfather who served as a division chief with the New York City Fire Department in 1899, another who served as a New York Police Department officer, and first cousins who served on 9/11 with the NYPD. She received the gift after sharing her family’s long history of service with a firefighter from the FDNY during training in New York.

The community gathered to pay tribute to first responders and others who risked their lives to keep people safe during 9/11 at a remembrance ceremony and dedication of the twin towers steel installation at the fire station Sept. 11, 2023. Rochester Fire Chief John Cieslik said the steel remnant was mounted to granite that was purchased by the family of Hugh and Nancy Elliott as a part of their ongoing commitment to bringing the Heroes’ Point Project to fruition. “We are very proud that the twin tower steel is finally in its place of honor in Heroes’ Point,” Cieslik said. “It’s a lovely place that they gave to the city and to the residents.” Nearly 3,000 people, crew members, firefighters, paramedics and police officers lost their lives and another 6,000 were injured on 9/11 after hijackers took over four U.S. airplanes and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon outside of Washington, D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania. “It’s been 22 years since that attack on that day, and you know what? get things like that, that happened so long ago, but we must never forget,” Rochester Mayor Stuart Bikson said. “We must never forget the victims of that; we must never forget the first responders who gave their lives trying to help others. We must never forget the men and women of our military, who around the world are keeping us safe.” Sept. 11 has been officially designated by Congress as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Bikson said he chooses to remember the heroes of that day. “I choose to remember the people who risked their lives to help others. … I choose to remember that good people triumph,” he said. The community can still assist in supporting Heroes’ Point. Donations can be made at any financial level by individuals, families, neighborhoods or organizations. Engraved brick pavers can be purchased, and there are also opportunities for sponsorships and engravings. The Rochester Fire Station is located at 277 E. Second St. in downtown Rochester. ROCHESTER HILLS — When working on her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award that a Girl Scout can attain, Rochester Hills Stoney Creek High School graduate Katelyn Kohn was looking for a project that would provide a real solution to an issue in her community. Kohn observed that children who are frequently forced to spend time in the hospital don’t get the same normalcy as healthy kids. Even simple things like going to visit the library and find a book that captivates them might not be possible for them. She explained she “wanted to give children a library experience while in the hospital, allowing them to choose a book safely off portable carts” and “wanted to provide normalcy for children during their stay.” She worked with Charlotte’s Wings to create five portable libraries for the five floors of the in-patient unit of Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit. She worked on gaining sponsors of $500 for each of the five carts, and also raised $300 through fundraising endeavors such as water and snow cone sales. Founded in March 2008, Charlotte’s Wings has been dedicated to helping children and families throughout Michigan cope with the challenges of serious illness and health crises by donating new books. Charlotte’s Wings has donated over 140,000 books to their partner hospitals and hospices throughout Michigan. With this donation, Charlotte’s Wings was able to create book carts with themes such as princesses and superheroes. “We were so moved by Katelyn’s connection with our mission and with her project’s ambitions. Her Gold award provided a wonderful opportunity for Katelyn and Charlotte’s Wings to work together to make a real difference to children and their families spending time at Children’s Hospital in Detroit,” Jennifer Buck, the executive director of Charlotte’s Wings, said in a press release. been 40 years, so it was really time to look at that name and see if it really reflected today’s 50-plus population — and we just really didn’t feel that it did, so we wanted something that really reflected the dynamic and sophisticated and savvy and engaged 50-plus population of today.” OPC Executive Director Renee Cortright said staying true to the organization’s longstanding role as a champion for the 50 and older community was imperative with the rebranding. “We are pleased to adopt the familiar OPC acronym with the addition of ‘Social and Activity Center’ as our new name, which better describes our focus on the socialization and activities that we offer for the 50plus,” she said. The organization is also celebrating 20 years since the opening of its 90,000-squarefoot building at 650 Letica Drive, which boasts two indoor pools, a walking track, a recently renovated cardiovascular and weight training room, pickleball courts, an atrium, and more. The organization, which has no membership fee, welcomed 178,305 people through its doors in 2022 and is hoping to increase its reach this year. An operating millage renewal for the OPC, which also includes a millage increase, got the green light from voters in 2020. The OPC millage was a renewal of its levy back up to 0.25 mill from Headlee rollbacks, plus a bump up, for a total of 0.32 mill for 10 years. Cortright said she encourages people to
tour the facility. Every week, close to 50 classes and programs are held there, and they offer resources through their health and wellness department, adult day services, support groups, and more. A sampling of classes and group activities include yoga, spinning, basketball, pottery, musical theater, travel, art and bingo. The focus, staff members say, is on health, wellness, socializing, community and staying engaged. The OPC also provides the Meals on Wheels program, transportation, adult day services and senior resources to enhance the quality of life and prolong housing independence for seniors in Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township. It offers a variety of resources and programs for caregivers and gives referrals for services for everything from in-home care to medical supplies and food assistance. The OPC Social and Activity Center is hosting an expo 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 5 at the center. The event is free and open to the public. While the focus of the event is to address the needs of people 50 and older, the expo also serves as a resource for caregivers and residents of all ages. Over 85 exhibitors will be on hand this year to share interactive information and resources on everything from travel, fitness and senior living information to financial advising, medical resources and more. The OPC Social and Activity Center is located at 650 Letica in Rochester. For more information, visit www.opccenter.org or call (248) 656-1403. Call Staff Writer Mary Beth Almond at (586) 498-1060.

Firefly Forest School Director Bailey Lininger uses a trail sign to engage students outdoors.

NATURE-BASED LEARNING ON THE RISE IN MICHIGAN ‘IT REALLY BUILDS RESILIENCE, AND KIDDOS UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE PART OF THE WORLD AROUND THEM’ BY MARY BETH ALMOND METRO DETROIT — Constantly inundated by technology, today’s kids are spending much of their free time hunched over a screen inside instead of playing outdoors. Parents, on the other hand, are busy looking for experiences that will allow their children to unplug and get active, sparking the demand for nature-based schools and programs across the nation. The drive to offer kids hands-on learning experiences outdoors — commonly referred to as the forest school or nature school movement — is a trend that’s gaining momentum nationwide, including in Michigan. In these schools and programs, children spend most — or all — of their time outside. Last year, the Farmington Hills Nature Center at Heritage Park opened a Nature Preschool for children ages 3-5. “We use the outdoors as our classroom, so we’re really building skills in a real-world learning environment. Skills like resilience, social skills, building a classroom community, and building a respect and curiosity for nature,” said Nature Center Supervisor Ashlie Smith. Students at the Heritage Park Nature Preschool — a state licensed child care center with preschool teachers who are Forest School Certified — learn outside every day for the entire half-day class period they sign up for. If severe weather occurs, class activities are moved into a licensed classroom at the Nature Center. “It’s meant to be very immersive, where children are learning throughout multiple seasons. … They’re here every day, all winter and on rainy days too … so it really builds resilience, and kiddos understand that they are part of the world around them,” said Smith. To some, it may look like children at the Heritage Park Nature Preschool are simply playing outside for hours each day, but Smith said their time outdoors helps develop valuable skills and fosters traits like resilience, leadership, problem-solving and perseverance. “Instead of having a classroom that is set up for them with everything perfectly arranged, they are learning that things are dynamic, things change and the seasons change. ter temperatures. “We’re not just going outside for 20 minutes to play at recess or only when it’s nice and sunny and 75 degrees. We really work with our families and our kids to embrace all weather,” Lininger said. Armed with the proper attire and outdoor gear, students are taught how to embrace the world around them as it is and use it as their classroom. “The more time for unstructured play that you give kids in the natural world, the more creative they are, the more they learn, the more they deepen their growth and fine motor skills, the more they are able to explore and learn independently instead of just being guided, and the more opportunities they are given to be creative problem solvers, to think critically about things, to learn to be adaptable and flexible,” added Lininger. Students are free to run, jump, splash and explore and, in the process, they are constantly learning and growing. “One of the things that we really focus on in our program is instilling a sense of selfefficacy and capability in our kids. We’re really focused on giving our kids the chance to feel competent and capable — that’s something that we see a ton of growth in,” Lininger said. “We see a lot of confidence too.”

room is different every time they come in, which really builds their ability to become self-sufficient and empowers them in their learning,” she explained. In 2019, Bailey Lininger opened Firefly Forest School to better connect students with the natural world. “Both parents and educators want kids to experience an unplugged childhood as much as they can — one where they can dig for worms, balance on fallen tree trunks and splash in puddles,” said Lininger, the director of Firefly Forest School. Firefly Forest School provides southeast Michigan children ages 3-10 with immersive, nature-based learning through enrichment programming from nature preserves in the metro Detroit area. “We love being able to complement a more traditional experience at a more traditional school with some time to just run and be free and play and climb and build and dig and do all the things that are a really important part of being a kid,” Lininger said. Every class is held entirely outdoors every day, rain or shine, even in the chilly win-

sign committee has selected 19 murals to display around town this year. “All the artists donate their time. We provide the mural boards, which is a piece of plywood 4 foot by 8 foot, and they create their design,” Trevarrow said. “Every year they are more and more amazing.” All murals are entered into People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice contests, with the winning mural artists each receiving a $250 cash prize. “We have young artists, we have experienced artists and we have artists where this is their first time trying something like this, which adds to the magic of the mural tour,” added Trevarrow.
Food is another artform, and as such, downtown Rochester invites the community to enjoy a Taste of Fall. “Art comes in all different forms, so we really wanted to show off the work of our talented restaurants, chefs and restaurateurs — in terms of their creations, abilities and fun fall flavors,” said Taylor Knuth, the marketing coordinator for the Rochester DDA. Through Oct. 16, the public can embark on a culinary journey through autumn flavors, featuring a lineup of over 20 restaurants, each showcasing their unique fall-inspired dishes for downtown Rochester’s Taste of Fall event. There are many fall-inspired menu items to choose from, including an apple pie doughnut from Bakehouse 46, a pan-roasted pork chop from The Meeting House, a “Fall From the Tree” coffee drink from Dessert Oasis Coffee Roast-
ers, homemade chili from Lettuce, and a deconstructed caramel apple cake from The Home Bakery, to name a few. “We’ve seen a lot of traffic come through for these different promotions, which is exciting,” Knuth said. Adding an extra layer of fun to the Taste of Fall is “Foodie Fridays.” On each Friday of the promotion, diners have the chance to win a $50 downtown Rochester gift certificate by sending the keyword “FOODIEFRIDAY” to (866) 6034005 and uploading a picture of their receipt from any participating Taste of Fall restaurant. A complete list of participating businesses and fall menu offerings can be found in the Taste of Fall brochure available at the Downtown Collaboration Studio, 431 S. Main St., or online at downtownrochestermi.com. For more information, call (248) 656-0060.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS OFFER ROOM-BY-ROOM TIPS TO HOMEOWNERS BY MARK VEST mvest@candgnews.com

life. Kitchens are all about functionality, so you need to make sure you have the proper working space, the proper room to live your life the way you do. The kitchen is the heart of the home, so it needs to be not only beautiful, but functional as well.” As for improving the look of a bedroom, Miller Weinstein suggests updating lamps and bedding, adding a bench at the end of a bed, minimizing unnecessary furniture, and adding drapery or window treatments. “Those are all things you can do without buying new furniture,” she said. “You can even paint your furniture. If it’s old, stodgy wood pieces, painting them will sort of bring them into this day and age.” Both Asmar and Miller Weinstein typically work on multiple rooms when hired for projects. METRO DETROIT — According to some interior designers, watching home improvement shows can give some people the wrong idea. Shows that feature homes that are remodeled and renovated can make for great entertainment, but some educational components may be missing. As can often be the case with “reality” TV, what appears on the television screen doesn’t necessarily jive with the real world. Jennifer Asmar is the owner of Asmar Interiors, which is based out of Birmingham. “Everybody thinks doing design work is like HGTV — they pick what they want and then one week later it’s done,” Asmar said. “Things that are done properly take time, and things that you want done correctly need planning. It’s not a one-to-two-week project — nothing should be.” Amy Miller Weinstein owns AMW Design Studio, based out of Birmingham, and she also wanted to set the record straight about the difference between television and real-world home improvement projects. “It’s not like it is on TV at all, the decision-making or any of that,” Miller Weinstein said. “The timeline that they create just doesn’t even exist in the real world. … It’s very staged. It doesn’t happen in a week.” Asmar shared a more realistic scenario. “Everything is custom for what I do, and most designers do, so there is no standard cost or standard time frame, because we do custom projects, so everything is all dependent on the client and the level of the job,” she said. “To put a number and time on anything is not realistic. … Everything depends on what you’re doing.” Miller Weinstein discussed the current interior design trends that she has been observing. “I think people are looking for a simpler way of living in their house that’s comfortable and easy,” she said. “There’s a lot of great indoor outdoor fabrics right now that are pet-friendly (and) child-friendly. People don’t want stuffy anymore; they want comfort (and) ease. Whatever their taste level may be, whether it’s traditional, transitional or contemporary, there are great new materials and things available on the market that can address all of that.” Living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms are popular areas for home improvement projects, and Asmar shared tips for improving each. “Usually creating some kind of focal point in the room, whether it be the fireplace wall or an art wall, or something dramatic like that — there’s a focal point in the room,” she said of living rooms. “The bathroom should be beautifully done and according to your requirements in

to help you with that.” In appointing Blake, board members cited his calmness, empathy, humility and passion for education, along with his experience as an attorney. Also resonating with the board, according to district officials, was Blake’s ability to overcome adversity and become successful despite having grown up in an underserved community. “This is why I’m interested in education,” Blake said. “Because I think that education has transformed my life, and it can transform other people’s. I didn’t have a great K-12 education. That was subpar, and I’ve had to work harder to overcome that. … I still think that your education determines your dreams, and so I want to help all the kids in this district to reach their dreams.”
“I think that’s inspiring for our students,” said Jessica Gupta, board secretary. Trustee Andrew Weaver was the lone board member to dissent. “Toward Jason Blake and why I will not be supporting him to join our board … is he has the same skill set as Lori Baggot. They are both lawyers. One leans politically right, one leans politically left, and is very open in their political beliefs. That, at this point, is not something that needs to be added to our board. It adds no value to our board,” Weaver said of his vote. Current board positions and terms of service include: President Michelle Bueltel (2024), Vice President Barb Anness (2024), Treasurer Julie Alspach (2024), Secretary Jessica Gupta (2028), Trustee Carol Beth Litkouhi (2028), Trustee Andrew Weaver (2024), and Trustee Jayson Blake (2024). “Common spots people want to update right now are kitchens, primary bathrooms, primary bedrooms — spaces in general, with closeting,” Miller Weinstein said. “I get requests for lower levels — basements that they (want to) spruce up.” Asmar shared what she thinks is another current trend. “Most people are doing more streamline modern — not as heavy traditional,” she said. “It seems like less is more.” Oakland Community College offers an associate of applied science degree in interior design, and from the perspective of Michelle Pergeau-Dudgeon, who is the program coordinator of the interior design program at OCC, there is something that doesn’t get enough attention in homes. “People underestimate lighting, and that’s a passion that I brought when I began
teaching, and how I got my first teaching course was lighting and color,” PergeauDudgeon said. “That’s something I’m really pushing with my students — lighting cannot happen too early. Once that drywall goes up, it’s a lot harder for the electrician. Never underestimate the power of lighting.” Pergeau-Dudgeon is of the opinion that interior designers are effective problemsolvers for homeowners. Birmingham resident Katie Prior, who decided to utilize the services of an interior designer, might agree with that description. After going to someone’s home and seeing Miller Weinstein’s work, Prior reached out to her. That was approximately 20 years ago, and since then, Miller Weinstein has assisted Prior on a variety of home improvement projects. Prior shared the benefit of calling on Miller Weinstein for assistance. “You get full service, and with that, I’m referring to beginning with an overall design plan, making selections and then imple-

menting all of those moving pieces until you have the final product,” Prior said. Miller Weinstein shared her perspective as to why hiring an interior designer is worth the cost for those who want to improve the looks of their homes. “My belief is that in the long run we save you money because you don’t make mistakes,” she said. “If you listen to your designer, you’re being guided properly about all the things, all the decisions. … A good designer can pluck out tasteful, timeless choices, even at a Home Depot, a Menards or someplace like that. … (If ) you’re spending money, you might as well spend
