WATCH Drunken driver hits 2 parked vehicles

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 12:20 a.m. Oct. 13, Shelby Township police officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Leighton Drive, near Dequindre and Hamlin roads, for a report that a driver hit two parked cars while he was driving his vehicle down the street. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the driver of the vehicle, who reportedly stated that he was looking for his phone when he hit the parked vehicles. The officer could smell the odor of intoxicants on the driver, according to the report. The officer then had the driver

partment said it briefly went after the fleeing truck until it crashed in the vicinity of 15 Mile and Maple Lane Drive. The Sterling Heights Police Department said its officers arrested one male suspect who allegedly tried to flee and then transported him to the Macomb County Jail. According to an email from Sterling Heights Police Lt. Mario Bastianelli, officers found a loaded rifle in the truck and also discovered the victim “tied up with minor injuries.” On Oct. 25, Shelby Township police Sgt. Mark Benedettini provided additional information in a press release. It identified the arrestee as Angel Antonio Andujar-Ruiz, 33, from Tampa, Florida. “He has an extensive violent criminal history out of Florida, with at least one conviction of assault with intent to murder,” the press release states. “It is believed he came to Michigan with only the intent of carrying out this violent crime.” Shelby Township police said that the incident does not appear to be random. During an Oct. 25 arraignment before Judge Douglas Shepherd in Shelby Township 41-A District Court, Andujar-Ruiz was charged with three counts of weapons felony firearm as well as one count each of carjacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed rob-

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 10 a.m. Oct. 13, officers were dispatched to the 45000 block of Fox Lane, near West Utica and Mound roads, for a stolen vehicle report. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the victim, who stated that she had parked her vehicle in the parking lot the previous morning. When she came out this morning to go to her vehicle, she realized that it had been stolen overnight. Police took a report and entered the vehicle in a police database as stolen. — Kara Szymanski

thanked the Shelby Township and Sterling Heights police departments for their work. “My office is dedicated to delivering justice for the victim and holding the suspect accountable for his actions,” Lucido added. Shelby Township police said they are

still looking for three more suspects who reportedly had fled. Anyone who has more information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Shelby Township Police Department by calling (586) 731-2121. Call Staff Writer Eric Czarnik at (586) 498-1058.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to the area of Van Dyke Avenue and Annsbury Drive, south of 25 Mile Road, for a motor vehicle crash at 1:03 a.m. Oct. 11. Officers observed both vehicles involved in the crash to be on fire. The drivers were uninjured and had made it out of the vehicles prior to the vehicles starting on fire. When officers talked to the driver who caused the crash, the officers reportedly could smell intoxicants on his breath. Officers then had the driver perform field sobriety tests.

According to Macomb County prosecutors, several of the charges — including carjacking, armed robbery and torture — are felonies that can bring a life sentence, if found guilty. Shepherd denied the defendant bond. The MiCOURT database says AndujarRuiz is expected to appear back in court on Nov. 7 for a probable cause conference and then on Nov. 13 for a preliminary examination. No attorney was listed for AndujarRuiz at press time. Shelby Township police added that the investigation is “extremely complex” and involves multiple search warrants. Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide thanked Shelby Township Police Detective Lt. Terry Hogan and his team for their work on the case, as well as several law enforcement agencies for their help. Those agencies included the Sterling Heights, Clinton Township and Roseville police departments, as well as the FBI, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “Our flawed justice system once again released a career violent criminal, which offered him the opportunity to continue these heinous crimes,” Shelide said in a prepared statement. “This was preventable.” In a prepared statement, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido also

Utica High School Band Boosters to hold used instrument sale BY KARA SZYMANSKI kszymanski@candgnews.com

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Utica High School Band Boosters will be holding its 38th annual used instrument sale Nov. 19. The sale is a fundraiser for the boosters, while sellers also have the opportunity to earn cash.

The event will begin with appraisals for sellers from 9 a.m. to noon; then, the used instrument sale will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at Utica High School, 47255 Shelby Road in Shelby Township. The boosters said the sale is an opportunity to purchase an instrument at a reasonable price. Parents with children who are starting to learn music, or anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument, might find a good deal. Those

who no longer play an instrument or want some money to put toward a better instrument might find the sale useful as well. For sellers, if their instruments sell, they will get 80% of the sale price while the Utica High School Band Boosters will receive 20%. The boosters said that a $10 fee might apply if a poSee INSTRUMENTS on page 22A

COMMUNITY CELEBRATES UPDATED HISTORICAL MARKER BY ERIC CZARNIK eczarnik@candgnews.com

STERLING HEIGHTS — A green roadside landmark inscribed with gold text serves as a portal to prehistory. Officials from Sterling Heights and Utica Community Schools joined history enthusiasts and community supporters Oct. 23 for the unveiling of an updated historical marker sign that tells the story of the Holcombe Beach settlement. Indigenous people dwelled in the area over 10,000 years ago, according to archaeologists who excavated the site in the early 1960s. The Holcombe Beach marker sign is located along Dodge Park Road north of Metropolitan Parkway, just outside Heritage Junior High School and the Gene L. Klida Utica Academy for International Studies. A similar, previous historical marker was reportedly installed in the same area in 1977, but officials said the original sign had been aging and getting worn. During the unveiling, Sterling Heights Mayor Pro Tem Liz Sierawski welcomed the new sign. “(We’re) so excited to unveil this redone, improved sign that marks the … confirmation of IndigSee MARKER on page 21A

Photos provided by Shelby Township Police Department

SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA — According to a press release on the Shelby Township Police Department’s crimewatch.net page, the iCare Fighting Hunger Foundation collected a large number of bags of nonperishable food to help veterans in need and brought the food to the department. The department took the food to the Macomb County Veterans Support Center, 18025 E. 15 Mile Road, which the department said serves all veterans in the county in need. Referring to the iCare Fighting Hunger Foundation and the Macomb County Veterans Support Center, the department posted, “Thank you both for all that you do. It’s a great cause!” According to the foundation’s Facebook page, facebook.com/icarehunger, iCare Fighting Hunger Foundation held a Veterans Day food drive in September and October with the goal of collecting 50 or more bags of food. The foundation was able to reach the goal, and in addition to Shelby Township, the Utica and Sterling Heights police departments also received the food donations and made sure that they got to veterans.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department called the 17th annual Community Shred Day held Oct. 21 at River Bends Park a “success” after the event, which is put on with the Four County Community Foundation, brought in 29,994 pounds of documents for shredding. Volunteers from the Shelby Township Youth Law Enforcement Academy helped unload vehicles of the documents brought to be shredded, according to a press release. The department said that Community Shred Day helps protect residents and businesses from identity theft, and it has an environmental impact of saving “255 trees; 104,804 gallons of water; 61,385 kilowatt hours of electricity; 52 cubic yards of landfill; and 29 barrels of fuel oil.”

UTICA — The public parking lot located at the southeast corner of Cass Avenue and Summers Street was scheduled to be closed for construction starting Nov. 1. During construction, the Utica Department of Public Works will be removing the brick pavers and Total Asphalt Paving Inc. will be repaving. The lot will remain closed until the project is done. For more information, contact the DPW at (586) 731-6110.

Welcome to Tina Marshall, D.D.S.; a unique experience in the modern realm of dentistry. Dr. Tina Marshall and Dr. Marisa Oleski, the owners of these revolutionary dental offices, have made it their priority to offer their patients an all-around great encounter at the dentist’s office. Dr. Tina, having three daughters of her own, was more than aware of the challenges a parent faces when trying to get her kids to take care of their teeth. Like many other parents, the typical resistance from her daughters in going to the dentist was an obstacle she had to overcome each time they were due for a cleaning or a checkup. Understanding this

common dilemma most parents face, as she herself remembered her own resistance as a young girl to going to the dentist, she set out to find a way to make it easier for not only parents, but also the kids. The first step was to get a fresh, outside point of view. Tina recruited a medical consultant who had a reputation for turning medical offices into fun and family friendly environments without sacrificing a great level of care. Upon bringing in this new perspective, the present-day Tina Marshall D.D.S. was born. The new philosophy was simple: Treat patients like people, not just like patients!

The office was given a fun and exciting facelift with rooms decorated in Marvel and sports themes, among others; complimentary snacks and beverages were made available to everyone; and great toys and prizes were given away each visit to kids (and some youngat-heart adults). The doctors also fully invested in stateof-the-art technology to give the greatest level of care, and prices were lowered to make dental care truly affordable! These are just a few of the things that make Tina Marshall D.D.S. the great dental offices that they are, and people should come and experience the offices for themselves!

enous people being here,” she said. The new marker also gives fresh details about the Holcombe Beach site. The sign says an Indigenous group of peoples called the Anishinaabek — which includes the Odawa, Ojibwe and Potawatomi peoples — consider the Holcombe Beach settlers to be among “the Ancestors.” The marker credits “avocational archaeologist” Jerry DeVisscher for finding artifacts in the vicinity in 1960 and adds that, by 1961, archeologists from the University of Michigan followed up with excavation work. The “Holcombe” name reportedly comes from the Holcombe Sod Farm that had been the site of the dig. The updated marker said some Ancestors lived “on a sandy ridge” and wielded tools such as spearpoints and stone knives. Researchers also discovered a caribou bone, which suggested that the Ancestors had hunted those animals. “Later, research determined that the lake associated with the beach ridge was gone well before people left the tools and bone that identify the site as one of the oldest in Michigan,” the marker sign adds. Historical Commission President Brian James Egen said his organization oversees the marker program, which he said has installed almost 1,800 markers that are designed to educate and inspire. “Each of these markers tell a small but significant portion of our state’s past, in this case extending thousands of years back,” he said. “When viewed collectively as a whole, they provide a redolent mosaic of the Great Lakes State.” According to Sterling Heights Historical Commission Chair Bryan Wojciechowski, the process to update the marker started almost two years ago, and he praised the results for offering “a more comprehensive and inclusive narrative.” “It is important to remember that, in time, future generations may gain even deeper insights, and our current knowledge might be expanded or even corrected,” he explained. “That is the nature of history — ever fluid and ever changing.” Wojciechowski added that pictures of the Holcombe excavation will be part of an exhibit at the Sterling Heights Community Center in November for National Native American Heritage Month. The Utica Band program is happy to host this event each year to help students have a successful band experience,” Brett Bays, the Utica band director, said in an email. Joe Syler, the used instrument sale organizer and band director at Shelby Junior High, said the sale has a long tradition of getting quality used instruments into the hands of aspiring musicians. “Whether you are a beginner looking to get off to a good start, or a high schooler looking to upgrade to a professional model horn, we have all types and price ranges.
