Upon leaving military life about a decade ago, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Darrell Kingsberry Jr.’s life, in his words, had “been up and down,” sometimes fortunate and other times not-so-fortunate. At one point he was homeless for a year and had to couch-surf or live in his car. Eventually, he was able to get

When Julia Frueh got married in November, she knew she wanted the occasion to be somewhere special. And for her, that place was the church at Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac. Frueh, 34, from Sterling Heights, has spent the last several months getting help from the nonprofit charity to recover from substance abuse and trauma. As a result of her recovery journey, she said she is slowly starting to rebuild ties with her parents, as well as her now-husband’s family. Pastor Kent Clark, Grace’s CEO, officiated the marriage rites for Frueh and her husband, Jason. And the charity’s other members helped make the happy occasion happen too. See FRUEH on page 5A

Sterling Heights officials recently celebrated a new high score for the city on a rubric that measures LGBTQ rights and advocacy. The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy group, uses its Municipal Equality Index to rate cities for their policies and services. The group said on its website that it analyzed 506 U.S. cities based on 49 criteria in 2023, and 129 of those cities got a top 100 score. “Since the inception of the MEI in 2011, we have witnessed city leaders from every corner of this nation demonstrate commitment to advancing LGBTQ+ equality through both word and deed,” Human Rights Campaign Foundation President Kelley Robinson said on the site. This year, Sterling Heights achieved a rating of 99 out of 100 points. It earned 30 out of 30 points for nondiscrimination laws for employment, housing and public accommodations. The city earned 28 out of 28 points as an employer, as well as 22 out of 22 points for law enforcement. It earned 10 out of 12 points for municipal services, with two points deducted for lacking an enforcement mechanism for its human rights commission. The city also got 7 out of 8 points for leadership on LGBTQ+ equality, with one point deducted under the “leadership’s pro-equality legislative or policy efforts” category. In addition, the HRC said the city gained two bonus “flex points” that rounded out Sterling Heights’ final score to 99. Other local scores included a 59 for Warren, a 64 for Pleasant Ridge, and 100 for Ferndale, Detroit and Ann Arbor. In a statement, Sterling Heights Human Resources Manager Kate Baldwin called the city’s score “near perfect.” “We have also launched additional initiatives since 2019 including our police department adjusting their coding to capture reports of hate and bias, launching our first ever human rights commission called the CommUNITY Alliance, and embarking on our own Diversity, Equity and Inclusion journey to develop a transformative DEI Strategy for City staff and community,” Baldwin said. “They did everything for me,” Frueh said. “One of the case managers there bought me my wedding cake. The pastor’s wife paid for my dress to be altered. My dinner was paid for. … I just can’t believe how many people were involved. They made that day magical.” Frueh said she had a troubled childhood growing up in Michigan and Florida. She explained that after being kidnapped and raped, she ran away from home at age 11 and managed to hitchhike from Florida to Michigan. She said her mom then took her to a psychiatric hospital in Michigan and didn’t come back to get her. From there, Frueh said, she was entered into the foster care system until she became an adult. She said the institutionalization made her struggle with emotions and gave her a “trauma brain,” which she unsuccessfully tried to treat with drugs such as heroin, crack and meth, starting at around 19 years old. She said her battle with drug addiction spanned the next decade or so of her life. At one point, she relapsed and overdosed while in a truck on train tracks. But Frueh said that after stealing from a drug dealer and getting beaten into a coma afterward, she knew she needed help. She said she remembered a relative getting help from Grace Centers of Hope, so she decided to go there to find a path toward recovery. Frueh said the GCH program she undertook involves staying on the charity’s campus. She said she originally lived only on campus during the first two months, but was able to leave on weekends afterward. During the first few months, she spent her time becoming clean from drugs, going to Christian-based classes and engaging in service activities, she said. She took trauma recovery and parenting classes, engaged in Bible studies, attended church, and more. “I’m 34 and I’m finally getting help,” she said. “I had time to sit with the Lord, and I closed my mouth and I opened up my heart.” The program also inspired her to get married to Jason, the father of her two young children. She said she and her husband took relationship classes through the charity’s church. “I told Jason, my husband, this isn’t just a program to me. This is a change in life,” she said. “There are relationships that have been restored. That’s good for the children. That marriage has given me a sense of security.”

Frueh said she’ll soon be in a careerbuilding program that will involve making a resume and doing a job search. She said that through her activities at Grace, she has already been offered a couple of job opportunities. “I’m looking forward to the job search, and I think God has some plans for me to help and give back,” she said. She hopes to move back to her Sterling Heights home after getting a job. “I’ve been in a lot of institutions in my whole life, and this is the only thing that has worked for me,” she said. “It saved my family too.” According to Grace Centers of Hope, in 2022 it served 1,318 people, provided 34,696 childcare hours and served over 129,000 meals. Clark said the charity’s mission includes seeing people get their lives back, become productive citizens and transition from homelessness to homeownership. He commented on Frueh’s case and what it was like to preside over her wedding. “It was wonderful to see the family being put back together and healthy,” he said. “Here’s the thing: We take no government funding, and I sincerely believe that family is the building block of a solid society. America is falling apart in a real sense because of drugs and families falling apart, so it’s a real thrill for me to see families coming together.” Frueh added that she looks forward to spending the holidays by visiting family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. back to work and get back on his feet, thanks in part to a good support system. “I had some people looking out for me,” he said. As a wounded veteran, Kingsberry was able to apply for the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Homes4WoundedHeroes program this past spring. He said he heard back from the organization by the summer and then moved around two months ago from Beaverton, Oregon, to his new home in Sterling Heights. Kingsberry said he was “overwhelmed and just grateful” to hear the news. “I was feeling like I was on cloud nine getting that phone call,” he said. Kingsberry, who was born in Texas and has lived in multiple states, said he joined the U.S. Army in 2005 and served until he medically retired in 2013, and his service included deployments to Kuwait and Afghanistan. For his service, he has received military awards such as an Army Commendation Medal, as well as an Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars. Kingsberry said he suffered a back injury while on patrol, adding that he toughed it out at first. But when he was on the back lines, he discovered that he “had all kind of bulges in my spine. My spine was curving to the right.” As a wounded veteran, Kingsberry was able to apply for the Military Warriors Support Foundation’s Homes4WoundedHeroes program this past spring. He heard back from the organization by the summer and then moved around two months ago from Beaverton, Oregon, to his new home in Sterling Heights. The MWSF, founded in 2007, aims to help combat-wounded vets and Gold Star
families with struggles adjust back to civilian life. MWSF Executive Vice President Casey Kinser explained that veterans can sometimes struggle to obtain housing, especially if they’ve been wounded in combat. “As veterans are transitioning out of the military, many of them have been on base housing throughout their career,” Kinser said. “Especially the (wounded) veterans, their income potential has decreased, and often spouses have to become caregivers, so owning their own home isn’t always a realistic option for them.” Kinser said Bank of America donated the property to her foundation, and the foundation selected Kingsberry as the veteran to receive it. She added that she was present when he got the keys to his new home, adding it’s “always a great day” to see these events in person. “You can almost see the weight lifted off their shoulders and just be able to finally have a place to call their own and plan for the next chapter of their lives,” she said. Scott Stran, a senior vice president and senior relationship manager at Bank of America, said the bank is grateful to give back to those who served the U.S. Stran added that Bank of America also helped get the home ready for its new residents. “We will help stage the home; we will help furnish it; we will stock the pantry … just to make it feel like a homecoming, make it turnkey, where it’s livable day one,” he said. Kingsberry said he, his wife and their dog have since been settling into their new home in Sterling Heights and getting their belongings arranged just right. Looking back: The Detroit News strike This photo was taken in July 1995 of Sterling Heights police officers approaching the scene of a Detroit News strike that reportedly blocked the Sterling Heights Operations Facility at the intersection of Mound Road and Metropolitan Parkway. According to the Suburban Library Cooperative’s Local History Digital Collection, police ended up using riot gear and tear gas in order to disperse the picket line. Officers also reportedly arrested 23 people for charges such as disorderly conduct, inciting to riot, resisting arrest and unlawful assembly. “The strike itself occurred in Sterling Heights because that was where a production plant owned by one of the companies was located,” Mitchell Mulroy, a local history librarian for the Sterling Heights Public Library, said in an email. “In 1997 the National Labor Relations ruled that the newspapers had acted in unfair practices, but this was overruled in 2000 by a federal judge.” Learn more about the Local History Digital Collection by visiting sbrb-mon tage.auto-graphics.com.

Motor City Rockers return to form in 2023, hold second place in conference BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com
FRASER — This year, it’s been all about hockey for the Motor City Rockers. The offseason didn’t include general manager and head coach searches, discussions about whether there was going to be a team or not, or constant cosmetic ideas for inside the arena, but rather fully focused on what was taking place on the ice heading into the Rockers’ second season in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. “We always joked that we needed players and we needed a printer,” Rockers coach Gordie Brown said. “You needed everything from the beginning whether it was jerseys or every little thing. Now, you’ve gone through the process of the year and you can kind of understand how to get the players that you want, build the culture you want, and get the employees behind the scenes we need to run an organization like this. Heading into the second year, I don’t want to say it’s smoother, but you just learn a lot from the first year that you can incorporate into the second year.” Brown, in his second season as head coach, witnessed his team clinch third place in the Continental Conference, securing a playoff berth, but two straight losses in the first round would put an end to the Rockers’ inaugural season. Most coaches in the FPHL tend to see a significant roster turnover for the next season, leaving questions about what the team will look like in the coming year, but the Rockers picked up right

WATCH Juvenile reckless driver nearly hits car
A minor was recklessly driving a white Hyundai Elantra in the Meijer parking lot at 36600 Van Dyke Ave. the night of Dec. 3, drifting and hanging out the window. The vehicle, which had four to five juveniles inside, nearly struck the witness’s car, police said. According to police, the Elantra was last seen heading eastbound on Metropolitan Parkway.
A predominantly gray-colored bike was reportedly stolen outside a costume store in the 33000 block of Van Dyke Avenue, north of 14 Mile Road, Dec. 3. The theft reportedly happened while the owner spent around a half hour in the store. While the bike had a lock on it, it was unsecured, police said.

where they left off with a stacked lineup of returning veterans. “We felt really confident coming back, especially with how many returners we have,” defenseman Nicholas Magill-Diaz said. “At this level, you don’t get half of the returners we got back. We got just about everybody with three or four new faces, so we felt very confident. We have high expectations for ourselves.” The Rockers are currently in second in the Continental Conference to the tune of a 9-7 record this season, with six players having double-digit point totals already this season. Scott Coash, who led the Rockers in goals (40) and points (72) last season, has a team-high 10 goals and 19 points this season, while forward Brad Reitter, who was third on the team in points with 47, has a team-high 12 assists this year. Returning forward Declan Conway is building off his 52-point season in 2022, second on the team, with six goals and four assists already, while defenseman Jameson Milam (11 points), defenseman Josh Colten
(13 points), and forward Pavel Svintsov (16 points) round out the group. Svintsov, a first-year player for the Rockers, previously played in the Russian Student Hockey League where he tallied 12 goals and 17 assists last season. Returning goaltender Trevor Babin has been stellar in net with a 7-4 record and a .930 save percentage this season. With the majority of the team back and just a pair of new names and faces, Magill-Diaz said it’s been the team’s chemistry that has translated to the success so far. “Just from last year to this year, we’re a lot more comfortable having those uncomfortable conversations when it comes to people making mistakes or being held accountable for each other,” Magill-Diaz said. “It just makes it that much easier.” Chemistry has always been a strength of the Rockers, and look no further than their success last season in just their first year together as a group. The Rockers’ locker room is a tightknit group, and the sense of care and respect is a feeling that Brown said the Rockers deliver from top to bottom in the organization. “I think what it comes down to is that we’re pretty honest,” Brown said. “We tell
them what the expectations are and we’re not lying to them. This is the expectation, and we have those conversations with the players, and if you don’t believe myself or Nick Field, the GM, this is how we do it, and if you don’t want to do it, we’re not for you. I believe the players have our backs on that.” The Rockers jumped out to a 9-3 record this season before dropping four straight, holding leads in three of the four matchups. “Our issue is we get up, we get a lead, and then we stop playing,” Brown said. “We stop doing what we did to get the lead, and it’s some habits I got to work on with the guys to create better habits for the guys to get through 60 minutes of hockey.” The Rockers have battled injuries and illnesses the past couple of weeks, but the Rockers were looking to rebound with a three-game homestand against the Carolina Thunderbirds (Dec. 15), which occurred after press time, and the Elmira River Sharks (Dec. 22 and 23). With nearly three quarters of the season still left to play, there’s plenty of time for the Rockers to get back on track before the start of the playoffs. “Really, we just need to stay positive,”
defenseman T.J. Delaney said. “With all our success at the beginning of the season, I feel like we didn’t face too much adversity. With guys going down with injuries and us losing four straight, we’re facing that adversity now. Are we going to crumble or are we going to keep pushing forward? That’s the question.”

Score from page 3A
Sterling Heights’ index rating has soared quickly over the years. In 2019, the MEI only gave Sterling Heights an 8. But the score rose to 38 in 2020, 61 in 2021, and 91 in 2022. At the Dec. 5 Sterling Heights City Council meeting, councilmen Henry Yanez and Michael Radtke praised the latest news. Radtke added that the city’s score was “very pitiful” when he first joined the council, and he said the city’s efforts and showing its work toward making the city welcoming and inclusive paid dividends. “We got the score up to 99, but it
should have been 100, because I read the application, and it said on the application, you get 1 point if you have an elected or appointed official who is LGBTQ, and we do have those folks over at the CommUNITY Alliance. So we should’ve had 100 points,” Radtke said. “I don’t think we can correct the score for this year, but next year we should have 100, and I’m very proud of the work that they’ve done over there.” Learn more about the Municipal Equality Index by visiting hrc.org/mei or hrc.org/ resources/municipalities. DAISY SCOUTS COLLECTS TOYS FOR TOTS
ROCHESTER HILLS — Daisy Scout Troop 77820, which includes 20 first-graders at Long Meadow Elementary, recently partnered with North Oakland County Toys for Tots to host a multi-neighborhood toy drive after reading about how donations to the organization had declined the last few years. Organizers said they hoped the collection would make it convenient for those in the neighborhood to donate, give the Daisies a chance to help other kids, and introduce community service as part of earning their “be a sister to every Girl Scout” petal. The Daisies distributed flyers about the toy drive to their neighbors by going door to door with physical copies and working with their parents to post on neighborhood social media pages. When a neighbor had an item to donate, the girls would go pick it up. Altogether, they collected 565 items from their neighbors to donate to Toys for Tots.
ROCHESTER HILLS — The Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm is open for drop-in hours noon-3 p.m., with a guided tour of the Van Hoosen farmhouse at 1 p.m., Dec. 23, and 27-30. The 1840 Van Hoosen farmhouse is decorated with boughs of holly, old Christmas cards, family gifts, community cookbooks and a 10-foot Christmas tree. People will also find the seasonal interactive “All Aboard: Model Railroad Exhibit!” on display in the calf barn. Included with admission is a guided tour of the farmhouse and Red House, access to all exhibits, and a self-guided tour of the bull barn, the milk house, the equipment barn and Stoney Creek Cemetery. The event is free for museum members, $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and students. No registration is required.
STATEWIDE — The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, along with cancer centers and other organizations nationwide, recognized November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the second-most common cancer, not including skin cancer. For women, breast cancer is more common, while prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men. The institute shared the following statistics about lung cancer. • About 238,340 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2023. • About 127,070 deaths will result from lung cancer in 2023. • Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women. • Lung cancer is responsible for about 1 in 5 of all cancer deaths. • Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. • The yearly number of lung cancer deaths is declining. The estimated number of deaths in 2022 was 130,180. • The chance that a man will develop lung cancer in his lifetime is about 1 in 16. A woman’s lifetime chance of developing lung cancer is about 1 in 17. • Around 80% of lung cancer deaths are thought to be a result of smoking. To learn more about lung cancer screening at Karmanos, visit karmanos.org/lungcancerscreening.
UTICA DEDICATES PURPLE HEART TRAIL
UTICA — On Veterans Day, the city of Utica honored Purple Heart recipients and dedicated the Utica Purple Heart Trail at the American Legion Post 351, 46146 Cass Ave. The Purple Heart Trail is a nationwide effort to pay tribute to those who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal with sections of roads dedicated to them. Signs are placed along the roads where elected leaders have designated part of the trail. Find more information at purpleheart.org/purplehearttrail. Mayor Gus Calandrino on his Facebook page called the dedication one of his “proudest moments” as mayor. Many local elected officials were present for the ceremony.
Troy High class raises money for nonprofit
Photo provided by Patrice Rowbal
TROY — The Troy High personal communications class recently held its annual dodgeball tournament for charity supporting Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard’s Police Athletic League program, which builds positive relationships through recreation, mentoring and sports. Competition was fierce, with the senior team declaring victory, and the event raised $14,500 for the kids at PAL. “Sports helps with competition, etiquette, confidence, teamwork, and gives them an opportunity to come here and just be kids and play,” Bouchard said in a press release. “The volunteers at PAL deeply believe that opportunities for relationship-building and high-quality sports should be available to everyone. No fine print, no asterisk, no exceptions; that’s what they stand by, and that’s why Troy High School’s Personal Communications class chose them this year as the recipient.” PAL’s goals are to provide more opportunities for young women in sports, to double the number of children served, to develop young athletes so they develop a lifelong love of being active, and to be sure every child has access to a caring coach, and the chance to belong.
