t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. With charity drives and holiday events scheduled throughout December, the Christmas spirit is jingling all the way through the local community.
If you’re looking to support a charitable cause, check out Dominic’s Christmas Wish. Several years ago, Eastpointe resident Dominic Miller, 14, created the nonprofit organization to benefit children in need. Through the charity, Miller collects new pajamas, books, coats, slippers, toys, socks, hats, mittens, scarves and more that are dis-
tributed to local shelters. According to the Dominic’s Christmas Wish Facebook page, donations are down this year, and books and pajamas are needed most. The deadline for donations is Dec. 14. Items can be dropped off at 15325 Evergreen Ave. in Eastpointe. For more inSee HOLIDAYS on page 8A

ROSEVILLE — A team of assessors will examine the Roseville Police Department in depth next week, but before that, employees and members of the general public are being asked to provide comments on the department. On Dec. 11, the team of assessors from the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission, or MLEAC, will examine all aspects of the department — including policies, procedures, management, operations and support services — Roseville Police Chief Mitchell Berlin announced in a press release. Verification that the department meets the MLEAC’s standards is part of a voluntary process, Berlin said in the press release. The accreditation is a “highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence,” he said. To receive the accreditation, the Roseville Police Department must comply with 108 standards. The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar Michigan law enforcement agencies. According to Ron Wiles, the accreditation program director for MLEAC, the assessment team will review written materials, interview agency members and visit offices and other places where compliance with the organization’s standards can be observed. “Once the assessors complete their review of the agency, they will report to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status,” he said. The accreditation is valid for a three-year period, during which the department is required to submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance. “Accreditation results in greater accountability within the agency, reduced risk and liability exposure, stronger defense against civil

EASTPOINTE — An Eastpointe man faces felony charges after police say he grew upset over a missing package and fired his gun into the ground. Demarcko Malloy, 36, was arraigned Nov. 20 in Eastpointe’s 38th District Court. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has charged him with felon in possession of a firearm, felony firearm-second offense, felon in possession of ammunition, and reckless use of a firearm. His bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety. On Nov. 28, during a probable cause conference, Malloy waived his right to a preliminary examination and his case was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court. Malloy’s attorney, Timothy Juengel, did not return a request for comment by press time. The incident occurred at 4:20 p.m. Nov. 17 in the 15000 block of Nine Mile Road. Police were notified of a “shots fired” complaint. Their investigation led them to a nearby apartment complex where Malloy was a resident. Police believe that Malloy received a notification from the United Parcel Service informing him that a package he ordered had been delivered to his home. However, upon returning home, he did not see the package there and allegedly assumed it had been stolen. Malloy reportedly started canvassing the neighborhood while yelling, “Where is my package?” “Who’s got my package?”
and “One of you took my package!” When nobody responded, he allegedly returned to his apartment and retrieved a handgun before walking back outside. Police said that Malloy then yelled, “Who’s got my package?” one more time before reportedly firing one shot into the ground near the driveway. When nobody came forward with the missing item, Malloy allegedly walked around the building continuing to yell for his package, before firing a second shot into the ground. He then reportedly returned to his apartment and put away his weapon. Police said they later retrieved the handgun after arriving at the scene a short time later. Eastpointe Police Lt. Alex Holish said that while the department sympathizes with Malloy’s frustration regarding the stolen package, his reaction was clearly inappropriate. Each bullet that is fired recklessly can ricochet and hit an innocent person, he said. “Please exercise restraint, and contact the Eastpointe Police Department to report any crimes so that they can be thoroughly investigated,” Holish said in an email. “Every time a firearm is discharged within the city limits, there is a potential for the bullet to strike a bystander. Do not jeopardize your freedom or the safety of others. Do not let your emotions get the better of you.” Package theft continues to be a problem throughout Macomb County, he added. He advised residents to retrieve items from their porch as soon as possible, and to request in advance that items be delivered to the side door or placed out of view in the backyard, when possible. Friendly neighbors can also help by securing packages while the homeowner is away.

ROSEVILLE — A 42-year-old Sterling Heights man is facing a second-degree murder charge after he was found in a vehicle with his deceased girlfriend in Roseville. When officers arrived, they found two Yost people inside the vehicle, according to a Nov. 14 press release from the Roseville Police Department. One of the people, who has been identified as 45-year-old Dhoua Lao, of Warren, was found dead. “It appears that the victim sustained significant trauma to her head and face,” the press release states. To help Miller, the Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce has set up a drop box in the lobby of its building at 24840 Gratiot Ave., Suite C, in Eastpointe. Another charity providing a merrier Christmas for others is Eastpointe Cops Care. The organization’s third annual “Cops For Kids” benefits underprivileged children from infancy to age 12. Donated toys can be dropped off until Dec. 12 at Cloverleaf Bar & Restaurant, 24443 Gratiot Ave. in Eastpointe. On behalf of the program, the Chamber of Commerce is accepting Walmart, Target, Kroger and Meijer gift cards, which can be dropped off — just call first at (586) 776-5520. Families in need can apply to the program by Dec. 12 at the email address mbeam@eastpointecity.org. The following must be included: a parent ID with an Eastpointe address, names of the children up to 12 years old only, birth certificates and requested gift ideas. With help from Santa Claus, the gifts will be distributed at 5 p.m. Dec. 19 at Cloverleaf. The evening will include pizza and cake for the kids, raffles and a disc jockey. For more information, visit Eastpointe Cops Care on Facebook. Other events in town will celebrate the holidays. On Dec. 6, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, School & Early Childhood Center will hold an outdoor Nativity scene from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Along with live animals and Christmas carolers, performers will highlight the biblical story of Joseph, Mary, Jesus and the three wise men. “We have been doing this for the last few years,” congregation member Caitlin Gerds Habermas said. “It’s just a nice lowkey event, and the kids love seeing the animals. It puts you in the Christmas spirit.” The church is located at 23000 Gratiot Ave. in Eastpointe. All are welcome, and admission is free. For more information, call (586) 777-6300. Dashing through the snow will be the fourth annual Roseville Holiday Lights on Wheels parade set for Dec. 16, rain or shine. The parade will depart at 5:30 p.m. from the staging area in the north lot of Roseville High School, off Normal Street. Organized by the Roseville Neighborhood Watch Group — Michigan, the parade has become a Christmas tradition with local residents and businesses decorating their cars and trucks with holiday lights, Santa Claus
blow molds and other festive decorations. Roseville’s Public Works, Police and Fire departments participate, as well as Roseville Community Schools with its Grinch bus. “People can expect to see cars that are brightly lit,” said Matt Belz, one of the organizers who will drive his family in a Chevrolet Suburban with “all sorts of lights you’ll be able to see from space.” It’s an event the entire community gets caught up with. “A lot of people will sit or stand on lawns and watch us go by,” Belz said. “There’s people everywhere smiling and waving.” Belz said the parade started a few years ago. “It was mimicked after St. Clair Shores,” he said. “We saw their success and within a week we put on a parade. We have a lot of really good people that help this event thrive.” One thing organizers really wanted to do was to spread cheer to older residents who don’t get out much. On this year’s route, the procession will drive in front of five adult care facilities. “They know we’re coming, and the senior directors give the residents glow sticks to wave at the parade participants,” Belz said. “It’s really cool to see the expressions on their faces.” The parade lasts about three and a half hours and stays organized with a police escort. “The Roseville police does a really good job keeping us safe while going through intersections,” Belz said. “They have set up the route really well.” At press time, 50 entries had registered, and the limit is 100. Organizers have to keep the vehicles down to single axles. As long as there are spaces available, organizers will take entries up to the day of the parade. Participation in the parade is free, but all must fill out a registration form at forms.gle/9Fz2Q3CAtiEkugCq5. The parade route is available online at bit. ly/2023HLOWParade. The holiday festivities will continue Dec. 17 when Santa Claus comes to town for the Live Rite Recovery Resource Center’s free community Christmas party from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The jolly man in the red suit is scheduled to arrive by helicopter at 2 p.m. with gifts. Live Rite offers several services for individuals recovering from substance and/ or alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, grief, and depression. The nonprofit organization is located at 27700 Gratiot Ave. in Roseville. Call (586) 217-5899 for more information or visit liveritestructuredcorp.com. Eastpointe man convicted in fatal drunken driving incident BY ANDY KOZLOWSKI akozlowski@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — A local man has been convicted in a 2021 drunken driving incident in which he struck a couple who were riding a motorcycle, killing one and critically injuring another. A Macomb County jury convicted Eric Compton, 42, on Nov. 20. He was found guilty of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood alcohol content causing death with a prior Compton conviction, which carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years. He was also convicted of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood alcohol content causing serious injury with a prior conviction, a 10year felony. Compton’s attorney, Mariell Lehman, did not respond to requests for comment by press time. The trial lasted three days and was led by Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor
Steve Fox. Peter Lucido, the Macomb County prosecutor, said he was pleased with the outcome. “Thank you to the Macomb County jury for their careful deliberation in this case,” Lucido said in a prepared statement. “This is a stark reminder this holiday season to drive responsibly. Drive safe, and don’t drink and drive.” The deadly crash occurred the evening of Aug. 15, 2021, when Compton reportedly blew through a stop sign at the intersection of Holland and Rosalind avenues, located near Nine Mile and Kelly roads in Eastpointe. Compton, who was 39 at the time, crashed into a married couple, Bradley and Patricia Ruff, who were riding on the same motorcycle. Compton struck them at a high rate of speed while he was under the influence of alcohol. Bradley Ruff, 64, was declared dead at the scene, while Patricia Ruff, then 58, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Eastpointe police reported at the time See CONVICTED on page 14A

EASTPOINTE POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING PERSON EASTPOINTE — At press time, Eastpointe police were searching for a local woman who was reported missing by her guardian on Nov. 25. Nila Holliday, 22, is described as a Black woman who is about 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 121 pounds. She was last seen at around noon Nov. 11 while leaving her home to meet with an unknown man. She was last known to be wearing a black hoodie with spots, black jean shorts, and black and white gym shoes. She had short, beaded hair at the time of her disappearance. She also has a mole underneath her eye. Police said that Holliday suffers from mental illness and has a cognitive impairment. She has run away before, and she does not have a phone, Holliday police said. Anyone with information on Holliday is asked to call the Eastpointe Police Department at (586) 445-8957. — Andy Kozlowski

that Compton had fled the scene of the crash in another vehicle that had been following him, and he did not stop to render aid to the victims. Eastpointe police arrested him shortly after, without incident. Since Compton is a habitual third offender with prior convictions, the maximum sentence increases to 40 years in prison, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. The sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 9, 2024, before Circuit Court Judge Diane Druzinski.

42-year-old Martin Yost, of Sterling Heights, was taken into custody after evidence found in the vehicle led investigators to believe he was involved in Lao’s death. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said that Yost was passed out in the driver’s seat when police arrived. Yost is being charged with second-degree murder, a potential life felony. He was arraigned Nov. 16 in the 39th District Court in Roseville by Judge Alyia Hakim. He is being held in the Macomb County Jail without bond. At a probable cause conference held Nov. 29, Yost was referred to the Center for Forensic Psychiatry for an evaluation of his potential criminal responsibility and culpability. He was originally scheduled for a preliminary examination at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 6 at the district court, though according to
Charles Sercombe, editor of the Hamtramck Review, said at the time that the victims were “fixtures in Hamtramck.” He said they were “just wonderful hosts” at Kelly’s Bar on Holbrook Street, where a group of friends and patrons reportedly gathered on Aug. 17, 2021, to remember Bradley Ruff. “Part of the fabric of the community. It’s just shocking,” Sercombe said previously. “Everyone is just devastated by this news. They had just retired and we were hoping for the best for them, and this awful thing happened.” Editor Brian Louwers contributed to this article. Call Staff Writer Andy Kozlowski at (586) 498-1046.
court records, the court now has scheduled a hearing to review the center’s findings at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 28, 2024. Yost’s attorney, Marissa Kulcsar, did not return a request for comment. “This is a stark and tragic illustration of the severity of domestic violence,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a prepared statement. “Such crimes are deeply serious, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served.” The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office reminds anyone who may be in a domestic violence situation to call 911 if there is an emergency, or the nearest police department. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can also be found online at thehotline.org or by calling (800) 799-7233. Spotlight on business...
Leaf And Bud Transforming Michigan’s Cannabis Industry ‘From Seed To Sell’ You can’t buy a mature tree. You have to plant the seed, train its roots, cultivate the land and nurture the tree as it grows stronger and flourishes. Leaf and Bud founder and CEO Mark Savaya, Detroit’s “Henry Ford of Cannabis,” applied that same philosophy to his business, which is transforming the cannabis industry in metro Detroit and communities across Michigan by rehabilitating long shuttered (and in some cases historical) properties, employing hundreds of workers and providing the very finest products at the best prices for consumers. “At Leaf and Bud, we cultivate in-house, from seed to sell. We do cultivation, processing and retail under one roof,” Savaya said. Leaf and Bud is open for business at two locations in Detroit: at its headquarters on Livernois, south of Fenkell Avenue, and on Gratiot Avenue. They’re also up and running on Sherwood Avenue in Center Line, and on Dequindre Road in Hazel Park. Other locations include Lenox Township, Battle Creek, New Buffalo (on the west side of the state) and downtown Ann Arbor (open soon). Leaf and Bud’s products include the finest flower, gummies, oil, cartridges and accessories. “There was a lot of R&D that went into the ‘Mark Savaya Collection,’ a lot of trial and error, lost strains and endless hours. It was finally accomplished with the triumph of the hybrid born from Lemon Cherry Gelato and Sherbert Gelato strain,” Savaya said. “This high potency euphoric strain has become immensely popular in my collection, and no one has the cut.”
Leaf and Bud is dedicated to giving back to the community by transforming properties in the neighborhoods it calls home. That includes a former Coca-Cola facility and the former Farmer Jack distribution center in Detroit, and the Sanders chocolate factory in Highland Park. Savaya is also committed to giving those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses a second chance through employment. “They’re the best workers. They love what they do,” Savaya said. “It’s a win-win situation. They get a second chance in life, and we give hope to the right people.” Savaya said the success enjoyed by Leaf and Bud has allowed him to give back to hospitals, churches and shelters in the community. “I started this business with nothing at all except my own knowledge! I ended up growing myself and growing a wonderful team with over 350 employees,” Savaya said. “I work hard for everything, and I just want to help others to be just as successful! I’m always here to help anyone in any way I can.” Controlling its product from seed to sale and supplying its own retail inventory allows Leaf and Bud to offer customers the very best wholesale prices. “We cultivate everything in-house, so we sell it to the consumers for the wholesale price,” Savaya said. “That’s only at Leaf and Bud. We have over 8,000 lights growing, indoor cultivation.” Find Leaf and Bud on weedmaps.com or go to leafandbud.com for more about locations and products. 0404-2349

Army from ’68 to ’71. The service member logged three hours of film, more than 300 still photos and four hours of audio recordings. Liberty, 75, never saw the footage until recently. In June 2022, the Vietnam veteran met Savannah College of Art and Design student Tommy Dilger while filming at Kennedy Park in Eastpointe for another movie: Keith Famie’s documentary, “Detroit: The City of Hot Rods & Muscle Cars.” When talking to each other, Dilger found out about Liberty’s home movies. The 21-year-old film student knew there was a story waiting to be told in the dusty photographs and long-lost Super 8 film stock. The pair kept in touch, and for nine months Dilger compiled Liberty’s archives to create the 56-minute film, “Skip Liberty, Shooting in Vietnam.” The public will have the opportunity to see the movie. It will be shown at 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society, 16600 Stephens Road. Dilger’s finished product includes Liberty at basic training; working on turbine engines at Marble Mountain Air Facility with the
282nd Assault Helicopter Company, known as the Black Cats; flying as a door gunner; interacting with his comrades; and much more. “It’s an overview of Skip’s journey in Vietnam,” said Dilger, a 2021 Eisenhower High School graduate who grew up in Macomb Township and currently lives in Georgia while attending SCAD. “I wanted to show the footage that has never been seen before to a wider audience.” Not only does the film chronicle Liberty’s time during the Vietnam conflict, Dilger also captured moments of Liberty watching his home movies from more than 50 years ago. “You’ll see his reaction watching it for the first time and what Vietnam was like,” Dilger said. “It’s really rare to see this much footage. It’s all in color and shot in Kodachrome.” “Skip Liberty, Shooting in Vietnam” also illustrates the love story between Liberty and his fiancée, Judi, who became his wife in 1970. The couple have three children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. To keep Judi close to his heart while an ocean separated them, Liberty wrote “JUDI” in capital letters on his helmet, a memento he still has. According to Dilger, some of the footage depicts Liberty on leave with Judi in Hawaii on New Year’s Eve 1969.
“I’m really happy with it,” Dilger said. “It’s my first feature film. I learned a lot.” Knowing he would be drafted, Liberty instead enlisted in the military in 1968. “I wanted to join the Army to get an education,” he said. During his stint, Liberty periodically sent the footage from his Super 8 camera home to the U.S. Everything, however, was boxed up and forgotten about; therefore, Liberty never viewed it. Liberty now lives in Grayling and won’t be able to attend the viewing Sunday. But he saw the documentary along with Judi at the 2023 Grand Rapids Film Fest in October, where Dilger won the best student feature award. The film also earned the 2023 Honor Award at the Veterans Film Festival in San Francisco. “I think he did an excellent job. I think he did a fine job,” Liberty said. “Some of it I didn’t remember, and some other stuff came back in my mind.” When he’s not in school, Dilger is a history buff who participates in war reenactments and works as an amateur archivist. He’s featured as a military veteran in flashbacks in “Detroit: The City of Hot Rods & Muscle Cars.” For more information on the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society, visit mimths.org or call (586) 872-2581. lawsuits, increased community advocacy and more confidence in the agency’s ability to operate efficiently and respond to community needs,” Berlin said in a prepared statement. Carolyn Czech, a senior team member for the Roseville Neighborhood Watch
group, said the re-accreditation is important. “It shows that they care,” she said. “Having policies, procedures and instructions, internal audits and so forth in place to make improvements to ensure that the public safety comes first, I think it’s great. … I applaud the department for doing that.” As part of the assessment, members of the public are invited to provide comments to the assessment team, either by email or phone. A copy of the standards available for
inspection are available at the department, located at 29753 Gratiot Ave. in Roseville. To leave a comment by telephone, call (586) 447-4500 between 2 and 4 p.m. on Dec. 11. Telephone comments are limited to five minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the commission’s standards. Comments can also be emailed to wiles@michiganpolicechiefs.org. Czech, who works in the automotive industry, said the accreditation process could
be useful in other organizations, such as fire departments and businesses. “There’s always room for continual improvement,” she said. “It’s good to have some kind of documentation for some kind of root cause analysis or how to correct problems, instead of just putting a Band-Aid on it.” Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 291-7637.

INCIDENTS REPORTED TO LOCAL POLICE, AS COMPILED BY C & G REPORTERS
Police arrest suspect who allegedly stole nitrous oxide
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 5:25 p.m. on Nov. 5, a report was made about a retail theft that occurred on the same day in the 28000 block of Harper Avenue. Upon arrival, an officer spoke with the caller, an employee, who stated he had multiple pictures of the suspect vehicle and its license plate. The suspect had come into the store twice that day. The first time, he purchased a canister used to generate whipped cream with nitrous oxide gas, worth around $100. The second time he came in, he stole another canister and walked out without paying. The employee said this suspect has stolen from them in the past. The officer spoke to the owner over the phone who stated he wanted to prosecute the suspect since he didn’t listen to his previous warnings. The officer told the owner to save the photos and security footage for detectives. Another officer spoke briefly with the suspect over the phone. A sergeant was able to locate the suspect at an apartment complex. He was parked behind the buildings. The two officers could see the suspect, a 45-year-old man, sitting in the driver’s side, apparently inhaling nitrous oxide. The vehicle was locked, and he was told multiple times to unlock it. The suspect continued inhaling and refused to open the door. Eventually the suspect opened the door but refused to get out of the vehicle. An officer took the canister out of the suspect’s hands. The suspect grabbed onto the steering wheel at the same time and refused to exit the vehicle as another officer tried to pull the suspect out of the driver’s side. A struggle ensued before the officers and sergeant were able to get the suspect out of the car, into handcuffs and into the rear seat of a police car without further incident. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded. The vehicle next to the suspect’s vehicle was scratched and the owner was notified and gave officers their information for insurance purposes. On the way to the police station, the suspect was informed multiple times he was no longer welcome at the business and that he would be charged for trespassing if he showed up. The suspect reportedly said he understood.
Men steal lottery tickets
ST. CLAIR SHORES — On Nov. 7, a report was made about a case of retail theft that occurred the previous day, Nov. 6, in the 20000 block of 11 Mile Road. Upon arrival at the business, an officer spoke to the manager, a 30-year-old woman, who stated that around midnight, two men entered the store and asked the employee, a 21-year-old woman, for assistance
near the back of the store. At that time, another man allegedly went behind the counter and stole lottery tickets in the amount of approximately $460. The manager gave the officer a spreadsheet listing the stolen tickets.
Phone stolen from locker room
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 2:35 p.m. on Nov. 2, a report was made about a larceny that occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. the same day in the 20000 block of Eight Mile Road. The victim, a 70-year-old man, came into the police station and said that his iPhone was stolen from a gym locker room. The man said he arrived at the gym in the morning and changed in the locker room. He accidentally left his iPhone on the bench and proceeded with his workout. A short time later, he realized his iPhone was missing and checked the locker room. The man said he told a worker at the gym who performed a phone locator search. The search marked the phone in the city of Detroit. The same search was run at the police station, and it showed it to be east of Van Dyke and south of Outer Drive. The phone was called multiple times, but it went to voicemail.
Eastpointe police search for missing memorial bench
EASTPOINTE — Eastpointe police have issued an alert for a memorial bench that was stolen. The wooden bench has black bars on the side and is engraved with the line, “DONATED IN HONOR OF DR. BETSY COVILLE & HER BELOVED DOG CAMO.” The incident occurred on Nov. 7, around midnight. A light-colored Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling west on Collinson Avenue toward Kelly Road and stopped briefly next to the south side of the property at 21300 Kelly Road. The vehicle then turned to face east, toward Beaconsfield Avenue. The suspect then exited the vehicle, walked over to the bench, picked it up and placed it in the trunk before driving away eastbound on Collinson Avenue.
Vehicles do burnouts in parking lot
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police got a tip the night of Nov. 4 that a bunch of cars were allegedly doing burnouts in a parking lot in the 2000 block of Metropolitan Parkway, east of Dequindre Road. When police arrived, witnesses at the lot reportedly said the vehicles had already taken off.
Students cited for fighting on bus
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police investigated a reported assault and battery incident Nov. 3 at Davis Junior High School, 11311 Plumbrook Road. Police
said they heard from school staff that two students had fought over a bus seat while on a bus for around five to eight minutes. The two students were reportedly suspended, and police said they issued two citations for fighting in school.
Avenue. Another officer caught up with the suspect, who police said was, by this time, back on Beaufait. The suspect complained of medical problems and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Police said the suspect is facing retail fraud charges.
Cards taken
GROSSE POINTE CITY — Officers in Grosse Pointe City were called to the 1200 block of Whittier Road at around 2:30 a.m. Nov. 7 to assist officers in Grosse Pointe Park as they searched for and subsequently arrested larceny from auto suspects in the area, a police report states.
GROSSE POINTE WOODS — An unknown suspect is said to have stolen a credit card and a Sam’s Club membership card from the phone case of a customer after the customer dropped her phone while shopping at the Kroger store at 20422 Mack Ave. at around 10:40 a.m. Nov. 6. The customer said she checked with employees at the customer service desk to see if anyone had turned in a phone, but at the time, no one had. ‘Talley’s Folly’ set to run at Inspired Acting Company WALLED LAKE — The Inspired Acting Company is scheduled to run the PulitzerPrize-winning play “Talley’s Folly” Dec. 1-17. The play, by Lanford Wilson, is described as a romantic comedy that tackles issues ranging from antisemitism to coping with trauma. According to a press release, the play was written in 1979 and unfolds against the backdrop of a dilapidated and forgotten boathouse on the Talley farm on the Fourth of July, 1944, with D-Day having taken place the month prior. “The backdrop of the war helps raise issues of patriotism, capitalism and anti-Semitism,” the release states. “But it’s also a love story, where the characters grapple with issues of love, identity, and the courage to embrace the unknown. The play takes place in one act with no intermission, set in ninety-seven minutes of real time, with no set change. Lanford Wilson’s masterful storytelling weaves a rich tapestry of emotions and cultural nuances that resonate with audiences to this day.” Performances are scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. General admission tickets cost $35, or $30 for those under 30 and over 65. To purchase tickets, visit inspired acting.org or call (248) 863-9953.
