‘I’m just happy to be out’ MACOMB COUNTY PROSECUTOR’S CONVICTION INTEGRITY UNIT SEES FIRST OVERTURNED CONVICTION BY BRIAN WELLS bwells@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — On Wednesday, March 29, Mack Howell stood at a podium in the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office in Mount Clemens surrounded by family, members of the media, attorneys and several others. He tapped his hands on the sides of the podium, answering questions softly, occasionally biting his lip to keep from becoming emotional. After several questions, he couldn’t contain his emotions anymore, and his family came to comfort him as he dabbed at tears with a tissue. Howell was recently exonerated of a crime in Eastpointe in 2014. He See EXONERATE on page 9A

ROSEVILLE — When Ross Collette looked out of his residence in the Roseville Theatre March 24, he saw and smelled smoke coming from his office in another part of the building. He ran down the hallway and saw fire in his office, between his desk and computer. He
threw water on it until he thought he had it extinguished. The room was still full of smoke, so he put fans in the office to try to clear it out. “When I walked back in my office again, I did everything wrong, I guess, because it seemed to explode in new flames in a different place,” Collette said in a video he posted to Facebook March 26. Roseville school board approves sale of series two bond BY MARIA ALLARD
allard@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE — Next month, Roseville Community Schools officials plan to sell series two of its $58.9 million bond issue that passed in 2018. At the March 20 Board of Education
meeting, the school board voted 6-0 to approve a resolution for the sale of the series two bond. Board member Michael Anderson was absent. The bond issue was divided into three series: one at $39.8 million, two at about $9 million and three at $10 million. “The resolution is to move forward with series two bonds,” District Superintendent
Mark Blaszkowski said. “We are doing this so that we have a seamless transaction between our first series to our second series. This gives us time to get things in order.” At the meeting, Executive Director of Business & Finance Rayetta Ashbaugh confirmed the outside sources that will assist with the process.
“We are going to use the same people that we’ve used in the past for the bond,” Ashbaugh said. “Our bond underwriter will be Stifel, our bond counsel will be Miller Canfield, and our financial adviser will be PFM.” The bonds will be sold on the market May 9. efore their monthly meeting March 28, members of the Knights of Columbus Holy Innocents-Saint Barnabas No. 14213 Catholic Community recited the rosary. “We’re going to pray for the kids and adults that were killed in (the) Nashville (shooting), the unborn and our members that are in the hospital,” Grand Knight Lou Carver said. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternity of men promoting their faith, supporting their local parish, priest and community. According to Carver, St. Barnabas and Holy Innocents combined Knights Councils when St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Eastpointe closed. The Knights meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at Holy Innocents-St. Barnabas in Roseville. The group organizes various events, including community dinners, food drives and family activities. One popular event is the monthly potluck euchre tournament held at 6 p.m. on the first Friday of the month at the church’s social hall, located at 16359 Frazho Road in Roseville. The cost is $5 per person, plus a dish to pass. Among the Knights members at last week’s meeting was Eastpointe resident James Shanahan, who recently celebrated a milestone: 50 years as a Knight. For the achievement, Shanahan received recognition and a special pin, which his friend Linda Accettola, of Warren, pinned on him to make his anniversary official. “When I got the pin, it really hit me,” Shanahan, 69, said. “It’s just a great feeling.” One could say that becoming involved in the Knights of Columbus is a Shanahan family tradition. “My uncle, my grandfather and my dad were all Knights, especially my dad. Father, son arrested, charged after Eastpointe shooting EASTPOINTE — A father and son are facing charges after Eastpointe police found a man with gunshot wounds. On March 15, Eastpointe officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 16800 block of Toepfer Drive. When officers arrived, they located a 19-year-old man in a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds, according to a press release from the department. The man was transported to a local medical facility and was reported to be in stable condition. Several large-caliber shell casing were located at the scene, the department said in the release. Police said an investigation revealed that there was a prior altercation in Roseville between the victim and two Roseville residents — Carlos Allan Edwards, 39, and his son, Carlos Toure Leondre Edwards, 18. “We believe that the shooting was a result of retaliation,” the press release states. The suspects were located and arrested without incident in Ferndale the next morning. They were arraigned in the 38th District Court in Eastpointe. Carlos Allan Edwards is facing charges of assault with intent to murder, a felony punishable by any number of years up to life in prison; felony firearm, a two-year felony; carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony; possession of a firearm by a felon, a five-year felony; and possession of ammunition by a felon, also a five-year felony. He was given a $1 million cash or surety bond.

Carlos Toure Leondre Edwards is charged with tampering with evidence, a 10-year felony, and accessory after the fact to a felony, a five-year felony. He was given a $400,000 cash or surety bond. Both defendants had probable cause hearings March 29, during which both waived their preliminary examinations. Both cases were bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court. Richard W. Glanda, Carlos Allan Edwards’ attorney, declined to comment. Noel Erinjeri, Carlos Toure Leondre Edwards’ attorney, declined to comment as well. The press release said that the two defendants might face additional charges in Roseville, though at press time none were listed in court records. Both suspects were being held in the Macomb County Jail.

into it,” Shanahan said. “In his heyday, my dad was a police officer in Detroit. He was the sergeant at arms for the (City) Council of Detroit when Jerome Cavanagh was mayor. “When I first started with the Knights, I was young and impressionable. The first degree of being a Knight is charity,” Shanahan said. “The Knights were very big over the years. It was a fellowship. It was getting to meet new people. Winter, spring, summer and fall, there were always things going on. With the Knights, it’s kind of like family. You help them, they help you.” When Shanahan first joined Nov. 6, 1972, he was a member of Knights No. 3191, which had a building on Whittier Avenue in Detroit. “We had a clubhouse and a hall. I was the bartender once or twice a month,” Shanahan said. “One of the first charitable things we did was start a Tootsie Roll drive on Palm Sunday weekend.” Money raised from selling Tootsie Roll candies each year was donated to help individuals with intellectual disabilities. Shanahan also recalled days of bowling at Denby Bowling Lanes in Detroit. “I wasn’t too bad, a 172 average,” he said. “The only thing that ruined me were the No. 7 and No. 10 pins.” He also played on the Knights’ softball team, which sometimes traveled to Bay City and Saginaw. Shanahan has always

put his faith in God and celebrated Mass. “It gives you a good feeling,” he said. “Going to church, you feel better.” His faith was present on the frigid winter evening of Feb. 22, 1991, when Shanahan sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during an attack while carrying groceries to his Detroit apartment. “It hit my mid-thigh area,” Shanahan said. “There was blood all over the place in the snow.” A neighbor wrapped a towel around the injury until emergency medical services arrived and took Shanahan to a local hospital. “All I heard were doctors walking around in white coats,” he said. “The following day, I got tubes up and down my legs and my arms. I was on a walker for a year and a half.” Shanahan became disabled because of the shooting. He said he maintains his health with epidural treatments four times a year, has chiropractor visits and the occasional massage. “To this day, I’ve been to 13 orthopedic doctors,” Shanahan said. He said that the suspect has never been caught. “I’m still waiting for that to happen,” he said. was released March 20, seven years into a sentence of 25-50 years in prison for armed robbery. “When he walked out of the correctional facility (March 20), Mr. Howell immediately said, ‘Is this really happening?’” said David Moran, Howell’s attorney from the University of Michigan’s Innocence Clinic. Howell’s nephew, Dwayne Howell, said all his uncle wanted to do was see his family. “We were really excited,” Dwayne Howell said. “We offered him everything that we can offer. We tried to get him to eat meals and he didn’t want to eat; he just wanted to come home and see the rest of the family. … We always believed his innocence.” “I’m just happy to be out,” Mack Howell said.
How Howell’s charges were determined
On April 3, 2014, the 7-Eleven store located at 18700 10 Mile Road in Eastpointe was robbed by a man wearing all black clothing, including a cap and mask that concealed his face, leaving only his eyes visible. The robber was reported to be approximately 6 feet tall with a medium build. There were no injuries during the robbery, and while
no weapon was observed, the robber allegedly threatened to shoot the clerk multiple times, according to a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. The robber was then seen running from the store, according to the release. After the robbery, a tracking dog reportedly arrived at the scene but wasn’t given anything that had been touched by the perpetrator. The dog started its track outside the store and detected a scent on a paper bag with a beer can in it near a trash bin close to the entrance of the store. According to the press release, the robber was never observed on any security cameras or in person with a paper bag or beer can. However, the can was processed and a fingerprint was recovered from it. “The beer can had Howell’s DNA on it and DNA of an unknown person,” the press release states. “Due to Howell being the only forensic donor identified, he became the suspect.” A photo identification process occurred several months after the robbery, and even though Gail Pamukov, assistant county prosecutor and head of the county’s Conviction Integrity Unit, said the description didn’t match, Howell was charged. “It just didn’t stack up,” Pamukov said.

Eastpointe Community Garden seeking volunteers for spring cleanup BY BRIAN WELLS bwells@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — For William Randazzo, maintaining the Eastpointe Community Garden is about more than just planting and growing things; it’s about increasing food sustainability and helping others learn to grow fruits and vegetables. “Most of the things we are taught aren’t how to take care of each other or ourselves,” he said in an email. “I’m just trying to change a small piece of my world.” In its 11 seasons, the garden has seen numerous improvements, such as the replacement of the original 32 wooden gardening boxes with 24 metal beds that can be rented by community members, and a number of “giving garden” beds, which are beds that can be sponsored by people or businesses that offer food for others to take. Last year, the gardeners grew around 650 pounds of food, Randazzo said, of which 450 pounds were grown on-site and another 200 pounds were donated from a co-gardener’s apple tree. “Successfully growing over our goal for what we wanted pound-wise excited us to
build bigger, grow more and help more of the community with as much food as we can grow,” he said. This year, Randazzo and several others who help maintain and run the garden have a number of improvements planned. They’re looking to add 20 new “giving garden” beds, which will require the ground to be leveled before fill dirt can be added and a watering system can be installed. All of this, Randazzo said, will help the gardeners reach their goal of growing 600 pounds of food on-site, although he thinks they could easily grow closer to 1,000 pounds. “We have a strong group of amazing volunteers who do this for the love of nature and helping others,” Randazzo said. But they can’t do it alone. On Saturday, April 15, the keepers of the garden are seeking volunteers for a cleanup event at the garden, located at 16425 E. Nine Mile Road in Eastpointe. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and will run until 2 p.m., and according to a Facebook event post, most tools will be provided. Attendees are asked to wear work clothes, waterproof boots or shoes, and to bring their own gloves. “This event is always a blast and we ac-

According to district officials, when it was announced via social media that MacDonald was named as an outstanding teacher, “He had dozens of comments from former students remembering their time in his class. At least one of them even said he became a teacher and a coach because of Mr. Mac’s influence.” Over at Eastpointe High School, health
teacher Belemonti is making an impact as well. According to a district press release, she uses kindness and compassion to make her classroom an inviting and safe space for her students. She also has a reputation of being “a great listener” and provides students with techniques to help them solve problems, cope with emotions and talk things out. Outside of the classroom, Belemonti started a yoga club for students and staff and has taken on leadership roles at the high school.

Roseville Community Schools is also celebrating its Outstanding Teachers of the Year: Karen DeMers at the elementary school level, Evan Leuenberger at the middle school level and Dan Chesher at the high school level. “We have a lot of really good teachers that care about the kids, which is No. 1,”
Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski said. “A lot of our teachers go above and beyond the four walls of the classroom for students to be successful. These are three examples of that.” DeMers came to RCS in 1996 and has held different positions throughout her tenure. The tech savvy teacher who is always smiling started in the English department at

Gnarly! STATEWIDE — When it comes to reading about fashions on the internet, Michiganders search for styles of the 1980s the most, according to research conducted by the website www. Boohoo.com. Boohoo is a fashion retailer in the U.S., specializing in women’s, men’s and plus-size clothing. The research included studies in all 50 states. The second-most popular fashion decade to search was the 1990s, with the 1970s as the third-most viewed among Michigan residents. “(The 1980s) is the most searched for decade in 36 out of 50 states, including Michigan, with California, Texas, Pennsylvania and Florida searching for it the most,” according to a Boohoo spokesperson. “As the ’80s is now the most searched for fashion decade, iconic retro clothing has the potential to become increasingly popular in the coming years. With this in mind, will consumers embrace this bold, bright decade in 2023?”

taller and had a thinner build, and he was reportedly seen running from the scene. However, due to medical conditions, Howell was using a cane at the time of the incident. It wasn’t until the case had been reviewed for several months that Pamukov and those working with her learned of a serial armed robbery suspect who fit the description of the suspect in the robbery for which Howell was convicted. The serial armed robbery suspect was charged with robbing five 7-Eleven stores in the area at around the time of the incident in Eastpointe. The serial armed robbery suspect was arrested and pleaded guilty on Aug. 20, 2014. This information was not presented during Howell’s jury trial, which didn’t take place until 2016, Pamukov said. “Between the confession on Aug. 20 (of 2014) of the serial armed robber and the day Mr. Howell started trial in 2016, the serial armed robber’s case was completely closed out,” Pamukov said. “Confession, plea, sentencing. So that case was done and none of that was presented to the jury.” After 11 months of review, Howell’s conviction was overturned. In a social media post, the Michigan Innocence Clinic
tinguish the fire, his wife called the Roseville Fire Department. Roseville Fire Marshal William Ciner said his department received the call at approximately 4:28 p.m. March 24. The department was assisted by the St. Clair Shores, Eastpointe and Warren fire departments and the Fraser Department of Public Safety. Collette was one of three people who were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. In his video, he stated that they were released after about 10 hours. “Here’s several miracles from this. One is that we’re alive,” he said. “You can’t see my eyes real good, but they’re still red. I still have black soot; when I blow my nose, it comes out. But I’m able to breathe, thank God, even after burn damage all the way down my throat from hot air. Believe me, it’s a horrible thing.” Collette was told the fire was contained to his office; however, smoke filled the rest of the building. The ice cream room beneath his office was damaged by water. “The fire marshal said, ‘This is really amazing because the glass door that leads into your residence, there’s no damage beyond that door. The door shut it off,’” Collette said. said Howell’s exoneration was the program’s 41st in its 14-year history. Wolfgang Mueller, Howell’s civil attorney, said his client plans to file for compensation of more than $320,000 under Michigan’s Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act. Mueller added that a civil lawsuit down the road is being investigated. The county’s Conviction Integrity Unit is one of several such units in the state, with one being operated by the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Since its inception, Pamukov said, the Conviction Integrity Unit has received more than 50 applications from prisoners asking for their cases to be reviewed. “These units are the Hail Mary of the criminal justice system, because people come to these units when basically everything else has failed,” Pamukov said. At the March 29 press conference, Lucido said the serial armed robber had been charged for the other incidents and he was believed to be out of prison now. Lucido said it was unclear if he was going to face further charges. The Eastpointe Police Department could not be reached for comment. Richard Albright, the city’s attorney, deferred comment to Lucido Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 291-7637.
“Everything smells like it’s been through the fire,” he added. The building is home to Deeper Life Ministries, which Collette leads, in addition to a barber shop and two other businesses. The building had been listed on churchrealestatesales.com with an asking price of $1.35 million. Collette said he lost 60 years’ worth of ministry items, including texts, sermons, songs and a Bible he got when he was 13. “The Bible I had when I was 13 years old, when I first preached, was right there with all of my notes written in the pages,” he said, getting emotional in the video. “But it’s gone forever now.” In an email March 29, Ciner said the fire remains under investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is required to investigate for arson before occupancy can be permitted as part of the Church Arson Prevention Act, which Congress passed in 1996. Representatives from the ATF’s Detroit Field Division did not return a request for comment. Collette ended the video by asking for prayers and donations. Collette also thanked the community for the love and support he’d already received, such as clothing, food and hygiene items, and a new Bible, which he used in the video to read an abbreviated version of the sermon that he’d planned for the day Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 2917637.

ily be used for technology updates, including the purchase of new devices that will be ordered in the spring of 2024 for distribution in the 2024-2025 school year. The new devices will include laptop computers and iPads for students; desktop computers for teachers to be used in labs, teacher stations and offices; new wireless routers in each classroom throughout the district; and additional network infrastructure. With a bond issue, bonds are sold in the capital markets at a date determined by the district, a financial adviser and an underwriter. Upon closing, funds generated from the bond sale are deposited in the district’s construction fund and are available to spend for completion of the projects contemplated in the bond proposal. The funds are limited in their use to approved projects. Funds, for instance, may not be spent on school employee salaries or benefits. “You sell the bonds, and the community is paying out for the bonds,” Blaszkowski said. “The public’s tax burden goes to paying off the debt we are in. The taxpayers will pay the bonds over time.” There were a multitude of projects for series one of the bond. Major series one projects from 2018 included the Roseville High School stadium and athletic complex addi-
tion, whiteboards in every classroom, culinary arts updates at Roseville High School, updated infrastructure for technology, janitorial supplies, marching band uniforms and new band equipment for all school buildings. The series one bond funding also provided for auto shop tools, a new welding class at Roseville High School, copy machines, district phone upgrades, new marquee signs and new playground equipment in every building. In addition, a number of series one summer projects included health clinic renovations, water bottle fountains, completing the boiler replacement at RHS, the stairway railing installation at RHS and more. While preparing for the series two bond, school officials found out there was about $2 million left in series one. “Series one bond has to be fully committed prior to us paying for anything we’re buying in series two,” Ashbaugh said. “It all has to be obligated.” The $2 million from series one will be allocated across the district for LED light replacements to save the district utility costs in the coming years, additional lighting at the RHS Athletic Complex, interactive television adapter upgrades and two buses to replace older ones. School officials plan to sell series three of the bond in approximately five years. Call Staff Writer Maria Allard at (586) 498-1045.

Chesher has been the school’s band director during his entire tenure, teaching cadet band, varsity band, symphonic band and jazz band, as well as the extracurricular marching band and jazz ensemble. Chesher’s dedication to the school’s music program has not gone unnoticed. “He ensures that all students in his class succeed by creating a classroom culture where students take ownership of their learning. Students in his bands are motivated and proud of themselves and their accomplishments,” Roseville High School Principal Jason Bettin said in a prepared statement. “He involves his bands in many school activities that support a positive school environment and takes an active role as a leader in the building to help build a culture that recognizes and celebrates student success.” Call Staff Writer Maria Allard at (586) 498-1045.
