COUSINO BASKETBALL OVERCOMES ADVERSITY TO WIN LEAGUE IN 2023
Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia listens to both sides in the combined Warren City Council and Ronald Papandrea v. Sonja Buffa and the Warren Election Commission case.
WARREN — Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia ruled in his written opinion and order on March 23 that Warren Mayor James Fouts can stay on the ballot and run for mayor for an unprecedented fifth four-year term. This was the decision in the combined cases

of the Warren City Council and Ronald J. Papandrea vs. Sonja Buffa and The City of Warren Election Commission. The judge’s opinion resulted from the omission of specific words on the “Proposal” section of the 2020 ballot and the amended Warren city charter. These words were “any terms or years served prior to this amendment are included.”
WARREN — Patrick Green can remain on the Warren City Council and continue his role as its president through November 2023, the end of his term. That was the result of the Gary Boike v. Patrick Green lawsuit, resolved in Macomb County Circuit Court through a written opinion and order from Judge Julie Gatti on March 28. Boike, the plaintiff, represented by attorney Lawrence Garcia, asked the judge to enforce term limits and grant an order that would deem Green no longer eligible to serve. Garcia argued that Green had exceeded his term limit on the council; therefore, the next highest at-large vote-getter would be eligible to replace him, which would be Boike. Green, represented by attorney Jeffrey Schroder, was seeking summary judgment and dismissal of the case, which would allow Green to finish his term on Green the Warren City Council. The defense prevailed. “Patrick Green is not in violation of the term limits. He is eligible to continue serving (on City Council) and under the plain language of the charter his partial term was allowed,” said Schroder, after the judge’s ruling. “Gary Boike’s case is dismissed with prejudice and the case is closed. This issue is resolved.” This issue has been festering since last year. According to council members, Boike arrived at a City Council meeting in November 2022 under the impression Green’s terms had expired. Boike came on stage to take a seat with the rest of the members. Boike was asked to leave the stage and sat in the audience. “Mr. Boike is considering his options for an appeal, but the 12-month partial term he started fighting for last November has melted down fast while we’ve been waiting for this decision,” said Garcia. “Appeals take a long time, See GREEN on page 15A

These ‘Outstanding Teachers’ have class BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
WARREN/CENTER LINE/STERLING HEIGHTS — For Holden Elementary School second grade educator Michelle Clarke, her favorite aspect of teaching is watching the growth in her students over time. While academics is a large part of that, Clarke also loves to see them come out of their shells, gain the ability to manage their emotions, develop confidence and strengthen peer relationships. Clarke, a 2003 Cousino High School graduate, was named the Warren Consolidated Schools’ Outstanding Teacher of the Year at the elementary level, alongside the district’s Outstanding Middle School Teacher of the Year Matthew Mutschler and the Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year Shawn Moore for the 20222023 school year. Every year, the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) holds an Outstanding Teacher of the Year program in which a teacher is chosen at the elementary, middle and high school levels per district in the county. They were nominated by their peers, parents and students. Nominated teachers were evaluated in 10 categories including teaching style, motivational expertise, lifelong learner, passion and community focus. From there, a countywide teacher is chosen, and this year, Moore was selected as the MISD County High School Teacher

WARREN — ”Howdy” from Texas, and “greetings” from the Empire State Building in New York City! Those one-word phrases were among the many messages Pinewood Elementary School students received on postcards last month during March is Reading Month. Pam Ansell, a second/third grade teacher in the Severely Language Impaired program, coordinated a project called “Read Across America” in recognition of March is Reading Month. Pinewood is part of the Warren Woods Public Schools district. Students and staff reached out to family and friends across the U.S. in an effort to collect postcards from all 50 states during March. At press time, the school received
about 176 postcards from 45 states, plus cards from Canada, Germany and Japan. On March 1, Ansell, staff and families posted messages about the project on ClassDojo, in student newsletters, and on Facebook and Twitter. Their social media messages were sent to family members and friends to let them know about the Reading Month activity. A postcard is a thin card with a picture on one side; on the other side is a blank space on which to write a message to someone and mail it. Ansell and third grade teacher Courtney Joondeph displayed a map of the U.S. on a hallway wall to hang each postcard received. “It’s a fun, little project to show how far written words can travel and how it impacts reading, math and geography. While winning the Macomb Area Conference-Gold dual and league meet, Warren Woods Tower tallied a 10-0 record for the first time in school history.
Warren Woods Tower earns third straight swim and dive title WARREN — Over the past three years, Warren Woods Tower boys swim and dive has been one of the more dominant teams in the Macomb Area Conference. Winning the dual meet and league meet titles in the MAC-Bronze in 2021, Warren Woods Tower has gone on to claim both titles for two straight seasons in the MAC-Gold, but this year had something a little extra attached to it. For the first time in school history, the team went undefeated in the regular season, earning a perfect 10-0 record. Warren Woods Tower coach John Portalski said it wasn’t on the team’s mind until they started to catch fire early in the year. “When we came down to it, honestly, we didn’t think much of it at first,” Portalski said. “Once we saw our schedule and the meets ahead, we started using it as motivation.” Carrying the momentum of their regular season success into the MAC-Gold league meet on Feb. 25 at Warren Woods Tower High School, the team dominated in convincing fashion, winning the MAC-Gold league meet by 143.5 points. The team was led by its senior leaders and underclassmen talent, which just so happens to be a family affair. Senior captain Jose Rios led the way with first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle
and 100 butterfly while his cousin, sophomore Luis Garbaldi, placed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Rios played a pivotal role as the team’s No. 1 swimmer, but also was a key leader for the young squad. “Him as a captain and kind of showing the way of things and the kids watching him at each meet, it went a long way,” Portalski said. To top it all off, Rios and Garbaldi teamed up with senior Albyn Rios, Jose and Garbaldi’s cousin, and freshman Axel Rios, Albyn’s brother, to win first in the 400 freestyle relay by over 19 seconds. Jose’s brother, Andrew Rios, a 2022 Warren Woods Tower graduate, was the school’s swim and dive MVP the past two seasons. Warren Woods Tower teammates cheered on the family relay as they held a Mexican flag at the end of the pool, and were ecstatic when the group won. It was the perfect ending to an incredible swim career for Jose and Albyn Rios. “The crazy part of that relay was that I was the slowest out of the four of us,” Albyn Rios said. “With all my family and our family, it was just amazing. I was basically in tears; we had the Mexican flag up there, too. It was crazy.” Other notable Warren Woods Tower performances were sophomore standout Brandon Bowman, who earned first in the See TOWER on page 21A

COMERICA’S PROM DRESS DRIVE COMBINES WITH JACKET FOR JOBS METRO DETROIT — Spring is here, and prom and graduation season are just around the corner. Getting an outfit for these big events can be daunting. Dresses, shoes, wraps and accessories can quickly become a costly expense for teens and even cost prohibitive for some. Don’t be dismayed. Comerica Bank is launching their fifth annual Prom Dress Drive around metro Detroit. Individuals and local businesses — including bridal shops, dress stores and shoe salons — are able to donate dresses and accessories to the effort at various locations around metro Detroit, including spots in Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe and Novi. Donation collections will begin Monday, April 3, and run through Friday, April 21. Once all the donations are collected and sorted, dates will be determined for teens to select items. Visit comerica.com/community/2023-promdressdrive-MI.html for donation locations. This is the first year Comerica will supply the donated dresses and accessories to Jackets for Jobs, a Detroit-based nonprofit that focuses on career development and removes barriers by providing high-quality clothing that makes clients look and feel professional to support workplace success. “For the past several years, our colleagues, customers and communities have come together with tremendous generosity during our previous prom dress drives to support local teens,” said Linda Nosegbe, Comerica Bank’s national community impact manager. “As the interest in contributing to this great cause remains strong, our new partnership with Jackets for Jobs allows us to continue connecting to the community through an outstanding community organization driven to help others to thrive and succeed.”

WARREN WEEKLY • APRIL 5, 2023
In 2020, Warren residents voted to amend the term limits of the mayor to reflect the term limits of other elected officials in Warren city government to the greater of three complete terms or 12 years in that office. This was after a 2016 election where voters extended only the mayor’s term limits to five terms or 20 years. According to Toia, the confusion stemmed from unclear and omitted language. “Rather, the evidence presented demonstrates that the ballot language and Charter are not clear on whether previous terms served are counted towards the current term limits,” Toia wrote in his opinion. “‘Any terms or years served prior to this amendment are included’ language was included on the ballot’s explanatory caption, but was not included on the ‘Proposal’ section on the ballot or in the amended Charter,” Toia wrote. In court, the judge explained the “Proposal” section of the ballot as the section where voters vote, yes or no. In further support of his decision, Toia wrote, “The language ‘any terms or years served prior to this amendment’ are included in previous ‘Proposal’ sections.’” The judge also said, “This is especially troubling considering Plaintiff (the Warren City Council) previously included similar limiting language regarding prior terms served on the ballot proposal and in the amended Charter language in 1998, but failed to do so with the 2020 amendment and Charter language at issue here. Specifically, as laid out above, the following language was included on the 1998 ballot proposal and in the amended Charter: ‘[t]his provision shall be applied to commence with the term of office that took effect after the
the ballot and came up with this proposal.” Pat Green is currently the Warren City Council’s president who received the most at-large votes, making him the mayor pro tem. He announced his mayoral run in December. Green said most Warren residents support equal term limits. “Coming up with an idea that is supported by (nearly) 70% or 41,000 of the res-
idents, I think that’s the residents’ proposal,” said Green. “It’s a referendum.” Also running for Warren mayor at press time on March 30 were Macomb County Commissioner Michelle Nard, D-District 12; Warren City Councilman Ron Papandrea; and state Rep. Lori Stone, D-Warren. Call Staff Writer Gena Johnson at (586) 498-1069.

election on November 7, 1995.’” “This language was removed in 2016,” the judge wrote. “No similar language regarding prior terms served was included in the 2020 ballot ‘Proposal’ section or Charter language.” Attorney Jeffrey Schroder, representing the plaintiff, the Warren City Council, said, “The City Council will be appealing this ruling because 41,000 voters, 67.8%, approved equal term limits for all offices and the ballot language stated ‘any terms or years served prior to this amendment are included.’ We believe that the voters knew exactly what they were doing when they voted for this.” Longtime Warren resident Lori Harris was present in the courtroom during the oral arguments. Harris said, “The voters knew what they were voting for. We don’t want the mayor to have another term in office.” Also present in the courtroom were supporters of the mayor. “We want him back in. He’s the best mayor. He is the only mayor that ever created diversity amongst the executive positions and he’s been very fair. And we want him back in,” said Jerry Tommie Bell, who identified himself as “an advocate for the city of Warren.” Attorney Lawrence Garcia, representing the defense, Sonja Buffa and the Warren Election Commission, said, “I am pleased with the decision and I am also glad for the fact I understand the reasoning behind it.” Although the mayor was not a named defendant, this decision has a direct impact on his potential tenure as mayor. “It is a victory not for me but for the residents of Warren and the rule of law. It ensures the voters will have a choice,” said Fouts. “Had I been prevented from running (for mayor) the only choice left with name identification, incumbency and financial backing would have been Pat Green. And Pat Green is the one who tried to take me off

Cousino basketball overcomes adversity to win league in 2023 WARREN — Regardless of their outcome in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 state tournament, Warren Cousino is turning the corner towards a successful boys basketball program. Not only did Cousino, which competes in the Macomb Area Conference-Blue, post its best regular season record in 10 years, but the squad also claimed their first league title since 2010, when they competed in the MAC-White. “It’s definitely taking a turn into hopefully a basketball school,” Cousino coach Joe Kohl said. “Cousino is kind of a strong soccer school. If you look at records and MAC championships, soccer has been strong for Cousino. Hopefully, we can turn that into a basketball program as well, and we start getting league championships and district finals games.” On March 8 at Hamtramck High School, Cousino (14-9) was eliminated from the state tournament in a 72-40 loss to Hamtramck (15-8).
While the score may not indicate a close matchup, Cousino held their own against a strong Hamtramck team. “Looking at that film and watching that game, we were predominantly in most of it,” Kohl said. “We had a chance to cut it to I think nine, and then we had a couple bad turnovers, and again being young had an impact on us. “ Cousino’s youth was thrown into the fire early this season after a slew of injuries put them in a position where depth wasn’t an option. Dropping their last five games of the season, Cousino’s lack of bodies and injury concerns left the starters in a compromised position throughout the season. “This year, we just got gassed come the last second quarter and third quarter where I just didn’t have a lot to put in there to give those guys a breather,” Kohl said. Still, senior captain Donald Wilburn was an explosive threat at the guard position for Cousino, leading the team in scoring. Behind Wilburn’s offensive skill set, Cousino went on a 12-1 stretch, beating MAC-Blue champion Utica in what would

lot of dialogue,” Ansell said. “Some cards have been handwritten and some have been typed. Some people who couldn’t find postcards sent pictures.” Some postcards came from mutual friends and family members the students and staff don’t even know. Ansell herself received a postcard that arrived all the way from Oregon from her hairdresser’s sister, whom she has never met. Some postcards were addressed to the student body in general while others were mailed to a specific staff member or student. Some former Pinewood students sent postcards stating their enthusiasm for the project. Many postcards featured photos highlighting certain characteristics or landmarks of the state: the Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania, the Arizona desert, a calm lake in Maine. The students also heard from Olathe, Kansas; Purdue, Indiana; Scotch Plains, New Jersey; St. Louis, Missouri; and Portland, Oregon. Ansell kept a tally of how many postcards per state. At press time, sunny Florida was in the lead with the most cards at 25. Susan Smith, who teaches in the SLI program, received a lot of cards, including one from her son’s girlfriend.
“Even as people are traveling, they send cards,” Smith said. “The kids love it. Every time the kids walk by they count and talk about the states the cards came from. Any opportunity we can get to enhance their love of reading is fantastic.” Brothers Joey and Maxwell Hill were among the students who received the most cards, including one from a former coworker of their mom, Stephanie Hill. “We have a ton. It’s very good,” said Maxwell, a second grader. “My favorite state is Ohio. We traveled to Ohio to Kalahari (Resorts & Conventions).” For Joey, who is in the third grade, Michigan is his favorite state. “Because we’re here,” he said, adding “I loved Kalahari. We stayed there two full days.” Third grader Abbygail Chapoton also received a lot of mail addressed to her, including communication from her grandpa’s brother. Another postcard came from Fairfield, Connecticut, from “a longtime friend of her grandparents.” Chapoton’s favorite postcard — a photo of three cousins around her age she has never met — was sent from Massapequa, New York. During the process, a ham radio operator in Massachusetts reached out to some fellow ham radio operators on the East Coast, got ham contact cards from them, and sent them with a letter to the school.

EXTRA SEED LIBRARIES: A GROWING TREND 14A/ APRIL 5, 2023 • WARREN WEEKLY
‘WE’RE NOT GARDENING FOR OURSELVES ANYMORE. WE’RE GARDENING FOR NATURE.’ METRO DETROIT — Each year, Michiganders eagerly wait for Old Man Winter to take his final breath and allow Mother Nature to usher in spring with new life. For those who have been shut inside all winter, spring brings much-needed fresh air and allows for reconnecting with nature. Local libraries encourage the public to get their hands dirty and start a garden this season by offering seed libraries. There are currently 130 active seed libraries in Michigan and around 600 nationwide, according to Bevin Cohen, who created the Michigan Seed Library Network as a connection tool to promote and develop seed libraries. Cohen is a Michigan-based author specializing in herbalism, seed saving and sustainability practices through the homestead project he and his wife own, called Small House Farm in Sanford. Though each seed library differs slightly from the next, the general model allows library-goers to “check out” seed packets of different plant varieties such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and even Michigan native plants, which attract vital pollinators like bees and butterflies. Typically, libraries limit how many seed packets can be checked out at a time and encourage seed saving so that they can replenish their supply. Professional seed saver Cohen explains that the process isn’t as complicated as it may seem. “It’s pretty simple. The first detail is learning how to identify when the seeds are ready to be harvested, which varies from one crop to the next,” Cohen said. Cohen said that knowing where the seeds are and when they’ll be ready is crucial in seed saving. “With things that (are) easy to grow, like beans and peas, we’re harvesting the seeds themselves, so those are really easy to identify. Plants like tomatoes and peppers will change from green to red, signifying their ripeness. Therefore, the seeds are ready to go. With some things that we grow and eat, we are already saving the seeds without realizing it, like when you extract the seeds from a melon before eating it.” According to Cohen, seeds don’t have
a strict expiration date; as long as they are stored in a cool, dark location, they can remain viable for many years. If stored in an airtight container in a freezer, they might be able to last for decades at a time. Cohen does specify that there is an exception to this rule: Seeds for parsnips, spinach and most onion varieties tend to lose their viability after the first year. Every year, the Michigan Seed Library Network showcases a different seed with Michigan roots through their “One Seed, One State” initiative. One Seed, One State unites seed libraries across the state under one common goal to grow the same plant. This year’s seed is Grand Rapids lettuce, which is described as an easy-to-grow frilly, non-bitter leaf lettuce that can be eaten as early as 28 days after planting. The “father of forced lettuce,” Eugene Davis, developed Grand Rapids lettuce in the late 1800s. Since this variety of lettuce is known to be cold hardy, it is credited with establishing the greenhouse winter lettuce industry in Grand Rapids, which supplied the Great Lakes region with lettuce for decades. The Michigan Seed Library Network served over 200 seed libraries with One Seed, One State kits in 2023, and Cohen estimates that nearly 900 individuals attended the seventh annual Central Michigan Seed Swap, an event inviting people to “Swap, share and share!” It was held Feb. 25. Lisa Martin, the branch librarian at the Warren Civic Center Library, is excited to announce the arrival of seed libraries at all four Warren libraries this April and that they will be participating in this year’s One Seed, One State project. Currently, the Civic and the Burnette Branch libraries are collecting seed donations of leftover seed packets (unopened or partial packets) to start their seed library. All donations must be labeled and placed in sealed bags, packets or envelopes. If you write your name on your donations, you’ll be entered in a drawing this fall for a gift card. Additionally, Cohen will be hosting a “Seed Saving 101” workshop at the Civic Center Library 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 6. Martin said that much of the inspiration for Warren’s seed libraries came from the Ferndale Area District Library’s impressive seed library model. Adult services See SEEDS on page 16A

‘could have known and should have known’ that the 12-year term limit could create midterm vacancies, particularly where there is no language allowing for partial terms.” According to the judge, the plaintiff was not entitled to relief for this argument. and it’s not clear there would be much left of the partial term even if we can overturn the decision on appeal.” According to the Warren city charter, “If a vacancy occurs in the membership of council at-large district, the unexpired term of such member shall be filled by the person receiving the highest number of votes of those who did not finish in the top two at the last council election.” Further, the charter states, “However, if the vacancy occurs in the membership of any council position within forty days prior to a regular city election, it shall not be filled.” The judge’s opinion and order was based on three primary points: the plain language of the charter, the intent of the voters, and lastly, that there was no language for midterm vacancies. For each of these arguments, there was no relief for the plaintiff. According to the Warren city charter, “A person shall not be eligible to hold the position of city council for more than the greater of three complete terms or 12 years.” Garcia argued that although Green served on council from November 2007 through November 2015, a period of eight
Partial terms or midterm vacancies were also at issue. Gatti’s opinion stated, “Plaintiff argued that the Charter does account for midterm vacancies and refers to (section) 4.14(61) which allows the next highest vote getter of council at-large district to fill the position.” Garcia further stated, “that voters

years, he served a partial term from Nov. 6, 2015, through Nov. 22, 2016, amounting to one year and 16 days. Green was reelected in 2019 and has been in office since. That’s a total of more than 12 years. But the judge stated in her opinion, “The plain language of the Charter allows council members to serve the greater of twelve years in office or three complete terms. Where, as here, a council member is serving three complete terms in addition to an incomplete term for a time greater than twelve years, the Charter language allows that. The Court is not persuaded by Plaintiffs arguments that the plain language contains any other meaning than what is reflected in that sentence.” According to the opinion, “The Plaintiff argued that this Court cannot infer whether the voters intended for Defendant to serve a full, four-year term of office. The Court clearly stated that Courts ‘should give effect to the expressed intention of the voter.’” The judge stated, “Here, the expressed intention of the Warren voters was for Defendant to serve the City for the four-year term upon which they voted. There is no evidence presented to this Court regarding any other intention of the 2019 electorate. Accordingly, this Court will honor that intention.”

placed online at https://rochesterpollinators. org and picked up on May 20 or 27 at the Downtown Rochester Farmers Market. The Rochester Pollinators have a seed library at Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve for those wishing to start from seeds. They offer native seeds such as purple coneflower, black-eyed Susans and milkweed varieties. Contrary to common belief, wild plants can be grown in deep containers for those with limited yard space; the Rochester Pollinators provide more information on how to do this successfully under their “Resources” section. Quesenberry has donated many of the seeds she’s saved from her own gardens. “We shouldn’t have to convince people that these are gorgeous plants to put in your yard. Some of them have the most beautifully intricate blooms and stunning leaf patterns. Because we live here, we should be seeing these native plants everywhere. Yet, you can’t really find them at garden centers.” She advises new gardeners to throw out everything they’ve learned about gardening and not to take themselves too seriously, as gardening is a fun experiment of trial and error. “It’s all about changing what we think is beautiful and recognizing that our Michigan natives are just as beautiful as the other nursery plants and give back so much more to your garden landscape,” Quesenberry said. “I had to get really excited about finding holes in leaves because these plants are meant to be eaten. It’s a shift in what we thought gardening was. We’re not gardening for ourselves anymore. We’re gardening for nature.” To learn more about seed libraries, visit miseedlibrary.org, and for gardening resources, visit hwww.smallhousefarm.com.

librarians Sarah Bowman and Michelle Williamson have been running the seed library in Ferndale for three years now. Williamson explained that the Ferndale Garden Club initiated the founding of the seed library just a year or so prior to her involvement and still plays an active role in educating librarygoers on sustainable garden practices. The Ferndale Garden Club and Cheryl English from Black Cat Pottery will host “It’s Easy To Be Green,” which will help attendees with educational tools and practices to promote environmental sustainability within their gardens, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16. Ferndale’s seed library is host to a wide array of seed offerings, including Michigan native plants like milkweed varieties that draw in pollinators, which are donated by their partner, the Ferndale Monarch Project. “I think people think weeds and assume the plants are ugly,” Bowman said. “And they aren’t going to be cut flowers like you see from a florist. They’re sustainable, drought tolerant, deer tolerant and pollinator friendly. They aren’t necessarily going to be a neat little row of flowers. It’s more of a wild vibe.” Amber Quesenberry, a homeschool mom of four and board member of the Rochester Pollinators, planted her first pollinator garden in 2020 from a plan in the Rochester Pollinators brochure. Since then, the Quesenberrys have planted over 1,100 plants in their front yard, which they’ve neatly curated to display that native plant gardens can still be manicured. With help from Mulberry Hill Wildlife, Quesenberry worked to redesign her yard to target different species. Now her yard is home to a birdfriendly garden, a bumblebee garden and a butterfly garden. Quesenberry contacted Marilyn Trent, the founder of the Rochester Pollinators, a few years back when her children became fascinated by pollinator conservation. Trent is an entrepreneur with a passion for ecology and wildlife preservation. Trent started the Rochester Pollinators in 2019 with the intention of educating and providing resources to preserve the Monarch butterfly and pollinator population. The Rochester Pollinators work to spread awareness and engage local communities in planting Michigan native plants in public and privately owned landscapes. Some of their outreaches include their annual native plant sale, where they sell a variety of native plants that can be selected by light, soil and moisture needs. Orders can be

spark our offense especially in transition. He’s going to be a tough guy to replace; not replace, because you can’t replace him, but a tough guy to lose.” While injuries were a significant blow to Cousino this year, the decreased numbers left room for the underclassmen to make a name for themselves in the rotation. Freshmen guards Nicholas Farr and Kameran Hayward played a pivotal role in Cousino’s success this season in the backcourt, and will look to be reliable pieces for Kohl next year. “Those guys stepped up huge, and I brought them up last year for summer league, so I was able to kind of scope them out and see if they could handle the pace of the varsity game, the pressure and the speed,” Kohl said. Farr and Hayward’s contributions were able to assist in getting junior guard Justin Lifshay a breather every now and then. Lifshay, a team captain this season, is a dynamic, two-way guard who will hold a crucial role for Cousino in the leadership department. Kohl said Lifshay was battle-tested this season on the offensive end. “I asked a lot out of him because as we moved through the year, teams were throwing two or three guys at him and chasing him up and down the floor the entire game,” Kohl said. “His leadership and toughness was key. Without him, we would’ve been in big trouble.” The league title may not have meant more to anyone than Lifshay, who watched his brothers Joey and Jacob play varsity bas-
ketball at Cousino. Lifshay said his experience watching his brothers play from the bleachers brought an added element of appreciation for the league title win. “Especially for me, I’m the youngest of two brothers who both went to Cousino,” Lifshay said. “One played four years of basketball at Cousino, and the other played for three years. I grew up my whole life watching Cousino basketball.” Alongside Lifshay next season will be junior forward Samuel Hawk III, who will command the frontcourt for Cousino. With Hawk and Lifshay at the helm alongside another year of experience for Farr and Hayward, Cousino will look to improve on its league-winning season in 2024. “Those two guys (Lifshay and Hawk) were really crucial for us, so having them back next year is going to be huge for us,” Kohl said.

Keep homes safe from spring flooding BY BRENDAN LOSINSKI blosinski@candgnews.com
METRO DETROIT — April showers may bring May flowers, but they can also bring severe issues for homeowners. Spring weather is often very wet, both from snow melting and from an increase in rainfall. These wet conditions mean there are several issues that can crop up for homeowners “The biggest problems come from big snow melts or rains that cause backups. Basement flooding is a huge problem around this time of year,” said Frank Winters, the owner of Birmingham Plumbing. “Tree roots can also grow into your sewer line, particularly in old houses that have clay pipes. They can even grow into broken PVC pipes and clog the drain.” “The biggest risks around this time of year include damage to finished basements,” added Rich Piccirilli, the chief operating officer of the Foundation Authority in Clinton Township. “Any kind of flooding is bad. That can destroy possessions, damage the foundation or lead to mold, among other things. You need to pay attention to your home.” Piccirilli said that homeowners should take this time of year to do a check of their home’s condition as they do their spring cleaning. “This is the best time of the year to do an exam of their home,” he explained. “Most people in the next 30 days are often outside and doing spring cleaning, so they often notice things. Just look for things; cracks in the brick, windows not closing or opening properly, walls starting to buckle. The soil can expand from the water and affect your home. … You can smell and see mildew. I would always recommend calling a professional to check it out if you see something. It’s better to be safe.” There are steps homeowners can take to try to avoid such problems. It can be very important to clean a house’s gutters and ensure the downspouts pour the gutters’ water away from the home properly. “Make sure your downspouts are hooked up and have proper grading away from the house,” said Piccirilli. “Downspouts are important. Make sure gutters are clean and extended away from the house. If it’s pointed away but the grade
pours it back toward the house, it still pools around the structure. You want that water away from the house.” Winters said that making sure the home has a working sump pump and backups that are designed to mitigate or prevent flooding is something homeowners should be doing at least once a year. “Usually people start identifying problems when water starts showing up,” he said. “Preemptively, you could look for cracks in your basement walls. Make sure your gutters outside aren’t dumping next to the house. Make sure the sump pump and backups are working so they don’t stick when you need them. The backup might not be used for years, so you want to run it periodically to keep it fresh. You might want to make sure your storm trap is clear and inspected.” Piccirilli advised homeowners to look out for mold but to be very cautious when dealing with it, as some forms can be hazardous to a person’s health. “In the case of mold or mildew, you can get some household products to clean some light mildew,” he said. “That white effervescence … you can clean that or have a company like ours take care of it. For full-blown black mold, you need to consult a professional company that knows how to deal with that. It can be dangerous.” Perhaps most importantly, making sure a home has the proper insurance coverage in the event of flooding could save families thousands of dollars in the event of a severe problem caused by spring weather. “We had a guy who walked in with a basement that was flooded with 3 feet of water and didn’t have insurance,” said Winters. “You always want to make sure you get that insured. We had to replace the sump pump and furnace. He lost pretty much everything he had in that basement.” Piccirilli said that a little prevention can go a long way. For every $1 invested in disaster mitigation, $6 can be saved in damages and repairs. “A lot of people are almost scared when they see a crack and are afraid it will be a $20,000 repair,” he said. “Often, it’s not — it’s just a $500 repair. If you can spot these issues soon, it can cost you a lot less money.” Call Staff Writer Brendan Losinski at (586) 498-1068.

Bowman also took first in the 200 medley relay with the help of Jose, Garbaldi and senior Robert Mayer. Junior Lleyton Byrnes added a secondand third-place finish in the meet while his brother, sophomore Seamus Byrnes, added a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle. Every Warren Woods Tower swimmer had a role in the success, and Portalski said that’s what made his team special. “The team strength, and it’s been a big focus the last few years I’ve been coaching, the big focus of making sure everyone has a part in the team,” Portalski said. “It’s not small by any means, but we only had 15 kids and a turnover of 10.” Warren Woods Tower is set to have another difficult turnover this season with Jose, Albyn and Mayer all set to graduate, but the team returns a healthy amount of talent in the sophomore and junior class. The Byrnes brothers will both be back in 2024 alongside Bowman, and Axel and

Garbaldi will continue to represent the swimming family tree. Portalski said Axel, who played a key role in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay at the league meet, will be a reliable swimmer for years to come. “I’m excited for the next three years because he’s right there with his brother and his cousins,” Portalski said. Lleyton Byrnes, who will find himself in a senior leadership role next year alongside Montgomery, said he’s ready to take on the veteran responsibilities. As a sophomore watching Andrew Rios on the team, Byrnes said Rios played a key role in his growth, and said he’ll look to pass that on to his teammates next season. “He (Andrew) was so inspiring to everyone,” Byrnes said. “He never made anyone feel bad or down for anyone being slow, and he was the fastest anyone has ever seen.” Call Staff Writer Jonathan Szczepaniak at (586) 498-1090.

Center Line High School health, nutrition and educational careers instructor Jennifer Haugh. During a brief ceremony, administrators from each building spoke on behalf of the honorees, starting with Woodruff, who is known for providing direct instruction and support for students with speech and language challenges. “She is able to effectively engage them in learning while tailoring instruction to their interests,” Crothers Principal Matt Provost said. “Ms. Woodruff also supports Crothers teachers by being a resource for special education and speech and language. You often find her collaborating with others of the special education team and the general education team.” Wolfe Assistant Principal Jennifer Serra described Maloney as “calm, fair and honest.” “Current students look forward to attending her class and former students return often to check in. Both our staff and students
are drawn to her passion and compassion,” Serra said. “She is a leader amongst her peers who can be trusted with important goals and responsibility. She is our Teacher of the Year because she puts students first.” When it came time to nominate a teacher for the MISD program, Principal John Kelley and Assistant Principals John Grob and Klaressa Howery immediately chose Haugh. “Mrs. Haugh is an outstanding teacher leader and is someone who leads by example, sets high standards for both herself and her students, and inspires her peers to strive for excellence,” Kelley said. “She recognizes and celebrates the successes of her students and colleagues while also providing constructive feedback and support. She has an infectious, positive attitude. All of her students receive individual attention, whether they are in good moods or not, and students in need will receive extra support and empathy.” All the nominated teachers will be honored during a dinner April 20 at the Mirage Banquet Hall in Clinton Township. Foundation Authority Experts Say Fixing Problems Early Can Many Times Save Money! For most of us, the home is our family’s largest investment — one that’s only as strong and secure as its foundation. Problems there, whether it’s a growing crack or water infiltration during the spring thaw, are the last thing anyone wants to see or hear about. But hearing information you can trust from the best in the business of addressing those problems can many times save you money, especially when problems are identified and corrected early. The experts at the Foundation Authority specialize in identifying and fixing all basement or crawl space issues. “It’s always important to have someone look at your house if you notice something is wrong,” said Richard Piccirilli of Foundation Authority. “If you can catch it early enough, most of the time we can keep the expense down. Dealing with home repairs is unpleasant and inconvenient to say the least, but when you must address any issues, it’s best to hear from a fulltime team of experts who know how to diagnose and repair problems including foundation cracks,
bowed basement walls, leaks or excess moisture. “Sometimes when you have things going on with your house, you don’t want a contractor to come in and sugarcoat it and put in a cheap fix just to make the price sound good,” Piccirilli said. “You want someone to come in and put in the correct fix to solve the problem the first time. We have more than 30 years of experience and they take care of your home like it’s their own. If they see a problem, they address it,” Piccirilli said. Whether you use your basement as additional living space, storage or only for family gatherings, you want to make sure it remains dry and free of those damp, musty smells. We can give you a free evaluation to help you make the right decision with your basement issues. Safe driving seminar puts students in the driver’s seat BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
WARREN — With spring break scheduled April 3-7, Warren Mott High School career and technical education teacher Anthony Wright thought it was the ideal time to reinforce the importance of safe driving among the students. On March 22, the school held the “Don’t Rock the Boat, Marauder Safer Driving Event,” which was coordinated by Wright, the Michigan State Police and the Traffic Improvement Association. Warren Mott is part of Warren Consolidated Schools. The Marauders are the school’s mascot. During the workshop, a number of distracted driving stations were set up in the auxiliary gymnasium. Each site provided different scenarios drivers face when on the road and how easily it is to become distracted. With the help of Wright and several student leaders, the Warren Mott students came
down by class and visited each station. “We’re trying to offer the kids a chance to learn about safe driving and (be) mindful to make good choices,” Wright said. At one station, students wore goggles that mimicked getting behind the wheel of a car while impaired by alcohol or drugs, when sleepy or driving at night. The students wearing the goggles tossed a basketball at students without goggles. The exercise gave the students the idea of how being under the influence, tired or driving at night affects a driver when on the road. Another site highlighted the importance of wearing seatbelts. At the safe driving simulator station, students sat down as if they were in a car and tried to drive while texting on their cellphones. They found they couldn’t focus on driving while trying to text and therefore swerved off course or crashed into other vehicles on the road. On the other side of the gym, Warren police Officer Darryl Bagiano, also the See DRIVING on page 26A

school’s resource officer, conducted mock traffic stops in an impaired driving exercise. A chair served as the “driver’s seat” and a makeshift wallet was placed on the “passenger’s seat.” Bagiano had the students, one by one, sit on the chair with the goggles on. He then pretended to pull over the students, asking them for their license, located inside the wallet. When they couldn’t find it, Bagiano motioned for them to “step out of the vehicle,” where he conducted a sobriety field test. “They get a perspective of what it’s like,” Bagiano said. “A lot of them think they can drive and obviously they can’t.” Seniors Nicole Malinova and Scott Mudd were among the student leaders who assisted with the program. “I think it’s very effective. It shows the dangers that could happen and makes you better prepared,” Malinova said. Mudd liked the idea of students learning from each other. “It’s very important for students to
teach each other and learn from each other, especially in high school,” he said. Mudd and Malinova both have their driver’s licenses and admitted they were nervous when first starting to drive but feel more comfortable now. They also take safe driving very seriously and were glad Warren Mott offered the safe driving program. Seniors Maressa Sobh and Berkeley Steinbrecher, who also served as student leaders, felt the students overall got a lot of good information from the event. “I think it’s going great,” Steinbrecher said. “I just feel everyone will benefit more from the instruction.” “I think the event was very helpful, and it seems like everything is very interactive. It’s a good thing to have before spring break,” Sobh said. “Texting and driving is important not to do.” Students also took surveys of the event, and were asked to sign a banner promising to practice safe driving during spring break. “A lot of people have signed it so far, which is a good sign,” Mudd said. “It’s a good reminder of why this school is so special.”
