Catching Cancer Before It’s Too Late

A physician’s personal cancer journey inspires life-saving screening: Learn how MRI total body screening can detect cancer early and save lives. abdomen. The most alarming part is that I had no symptoms before this diagnosis. This is the great dilemma of cancer: the need for early detection. Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment, and cancer needs to be detected when it is most treatable. My personal stage IV cancer journey has been long and rugged. My tumor eventually was recurrent in my brain after an initial seven months of chemotherapy. I have been extraordinarily lucky. After being told that I would live only two months without treatment on my brain, I was fortunate enough to become patient number one in a new drug study and I have been in remission 5 to 8 times longer than expected. During that time, instead of ending up with the indignation of dying, from a brain tumor in front of my family with seizures and eventual blindness, I have been able to see twins, born as grandchildren, ball games, swim meets, graduations, while watching my grandchildren and children achieve. Most importantly, I’ve gotten to hold my wife, Nancy, in my arms for more than 1500 more nights of my life. I get to hug my children and kiss my 13 grandchildren. They don’t have to look at me with tears in their eyes, because

Famed author and Health Guru, Tony Robbins, states in his new best seller called “Health Force”, that “MRI full-body imaging can detect a complete spectrum of cancer at very early stages”

Dr. Warren Ringold, M.D. they see Papa deteriorating. What a gift that has been. But very few patients are as fortunate as I have been, which is why I founded Bionicc Body Screening. At Bionicc Body Screening, we can screen for cancer from the top of the head through the genitals, detecting cancers as small as the size of a pencil eraser. We use highly advanced and sophisticated MRI screening, which can find small cancers in areas where doctors cannot order testing that will be covered by insurance. The irony is that these cancers start out very small, and they are very treatable at this stage. They are usually stage one and can be seen in

every organ of the body, including the dreaded pancreas. While screening for cancer, we can also find many other things that need to be treated or watched, such as brain, abdominal, chest, and groin aneurysms. If detected at this stage, treatment for stage one cancer is usually simple resection of a tumor. Unfortunately, if you are stage III or IV like most people, it results in vigorous and difficult treatment with much poorer outcomes. It is unfortunate that some patients resist screening due to fear. Despite their desire to take the test, they unnecessarily delay it out of fear of receiving potentially distressing news about their health. Giving in to fear can only make matters worse and potentially allow undetected health problems to spiral out of control. Don’t put off your screening any longer. Ask yourself, when is a better time to take action than right now? Don’t wait another 6 months or even another day. Prioritize your health and get screened today. The only regret patients have is that they waited. Don’t wait. Get a total body cancer screening today. Call 1-833-BIONICC (1-833-246-6422) today, or learn more now by visiting www.BioniccBodyScreening.com.

I’ll never forget the words of a patient who recently completed a total body cancer screening with me: ‘Doc, you saved my life!’ Despite having no symptoms, we discovered a tiny tumor lurking and growing inside of him. Without early detection, the mass could have silently grown into late-stage cancer, leading to excruciating treatments and a potentially dire outcome. Thanks to the power of early detection, cancer was discovered before it was too late. It’s moments like these that are precisely why total body screening saves lives. As a general rule, when someone presents to the doctor with a symptom related to cancer, they are usually at stage III or stage IV. Even with annual physicals, there are limitations. Most screening tests that are covered by insurance companies only cover about 29% of cancers. The other 71% of cancers occur in areas where doctors are unable to screen, and insurance companies will not pay for screening. This is where Bionicc Body Screening in Southfield can save lives. I am Dr. Warren Ringold, and today marks the fifth anniversary of the day my life changed forever. Five years ago, I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in my chest and

SET SAIL FOR THE GREAT LAKES BOATING FESTIVAL BY K. MICHELLE MORAN kmoran@candgnews.com

SHORES — Summer is just around the corner, and for many Michiganders, that means time spent on the water. To get people ready to enjoy a fun season of outdoor recreation, the Great Lakes Boating Festival returns to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, 788 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores, where it will run from noon to 7 p.m. May 20 and noon to 5 p.m. May 21. Admission is free. This event has been taking place for more than 30 years, but this is the first time it’s being helmed by the Michigan Boating Industries Association. Amanda Wendecker, vice president of marketing for the MBIA, said it made sense for them to take over when the previous organizer retired. The Great Lakes Boating Festival will take place May 20 and May 21 at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in Grosse Pointe Shores. The popular event typically draws thousands of visitors.

She said they were already coordinating most of the vendors anyway. “We’re just happy for it to be back,” Wendecker said. “It’s going to be the same successful show it’s always been.” The festival couldn’t be held last year because the GPYC marina was undergoing renovations. This year, attendees will get to see the redone marina as they browse among some 75 vendors — including at least one canoe company. Boats up to 60 feet in length will be displayed on land and in the water. In addition, there will be an art fair, music by the band Circle City Steel, lawn games, cocktails and food served by Flavors Food Truck. Although there’s no admission cost, attendees will need to bring money or some other form of payment if they want to get food or beverages. “There’s all kinds of things to see,” Wendecker said. “It’s a great atmosphere.” She said the event has typically attracted around 4,000 visitors over the weekend. Parking at the GPYC costs $20 per vehicle, but attendees can park for free and take a complimentary shuttle from nearby

project, which is slated to be done by the end of June. Business patrons can continue to use the city-owned parking lot behind Rite Aid during this project, but officials warn people to be prepared for delays and possible temporary detours. Anyone not going somewhere on the Hill is advised to seek an alternate route. During a meeting April 10, the Farms City Council unanimously approved a low bid from Nagle Paving Co. to tackle the 2023 road program at a cost not to exceed $3.3 million. Work will be funded by a voter-approved road millage, street funds and $381,503.40 from the general fund capital projects budget. City Councilman Lev Wood expressed some worries about the bid for Newberry, saying that it’s currently “old concrete.” “I’m concerned about costs escalating on that particular road because it’s in really bad shape,” Wood said. with Wood about costs potentially rising for Newberry. “That road is simply atrocious,” Gillooly said. City Manager Shane Reeside said he would relay those concerns to the city’s engineers with Hubbell, Roth and Clark, who prepared the estimates. He added that the estimates “are conservative” and that many projects don’t end up costing as much as anticipated. Residents and visitors might have unpleasant memories from some of the road projects that took place last year. “We had some delay problems last year,” Mayor Louis Theros said. Reeside agreed, noting that it was “a much more extensive project” because it involved the reconstruction of a part of Kerby Road. Reeside said they had some issues with the contractor last year, but they’ve worked well with Nagle before. So administrators are hoping everything will go more smoothly this spring and summer. “We think (the work) will be much more steady (this year),” Reeside said.

Woman, 81, seriously hurt in attack at her Grosse Pointe Park home PARK — A caregiver stands accused of a violent attack that left an 81-year-old Grosse Pointe Park woman hospitalized. The suspect, a 33-year-old Detroit woman, was charged with assault with intent to murder, armed robbery, first-degree home invasion, unlawful driving away of an automobile and four counts of felony firearm, for which she was arraigned May 8 in Grosse Pointe Park Municipal Court. She was given a $2 million bond, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Director Bryan Jarrell said the victim was alone in her home in the 1000 block of Berkshire Road when the suspect arrived at around 3 a.m. May 5. He said the victim opened the door to the suspect because she knew her. The suspect is said to have struck the victim in the head with a handgun, causing her to lose consciousness. “She got hit in the head pretty hard,” Jarrell said of the victim, who wasn’t able to call police until she regained consciousness. Jarrell said there was “a lot of blood on the floor” when police and medics arrived. The victim had to be transported to Ascension St. John Hospital in Southfield because she needed to have brain surgery as a result of her injuries, Jarrell said. The suspect stole the victim’s debit card and her car, fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle, Jarrell said. A second suspect — the person who drove the alleged attacker to the victim’s home — could also be facing charges, he said. It wasn’t clear at press time whether any additional suspects were involved in this incident. Because the victim’s car was a newer

Ford vehicle, Jarrell said police were able to work with Ford Motor Co. officials to track its location. That allowed them to locate and arrest the suspect — who was behind the wheel — and take her into custody about 30 minutes after police got the 911 call, he said. “It is heartbreaking to see a senior citizen’s trust be eroded completely by someone they knew and let into their home,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a prepared statement. “The crimes that we allege today against this defendant will show the ultimate of betrayals. We will seek justice for our senior victim in this case.” The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said the suspect will be back in court for a probable cause conference at 9 a.m. May 17. Michelle Boggess-Nunley, who owns Posterity, said people relate to Rhodes’ work and recognize her landscapes, many of which depict local sites like Belle Isle, The War Memorial or the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. An artist herself, Boggess-Nunley also appreciates Rhodes’ sweeping body of work. “She’s very diverse,” Boggess-Nunley said. “It’s not often you see someone who can paint a landscape and a portrait and an abstract in the same day. She’s very multitalented.” Rhodes, an only child, grew up in the Pointes. The 1978 Grosse Pointe South High School graduate studied with the late Detroit artist Jack Summers, who taught at South for many years. Rhodes said her late father, Joseph Palazzolo — a child of the Great Depression — was a gifted woodworker, painter and cartoonist, but he didn’t explore those talents professionally because of his fears about being able to make a living. Instead, he ran a local grocery store, she said. Those practical concerns also came into play for Rhodes, whose parents urged her to study something that would guarantee her a

good job. But Rhodes said that her parents let her switch to art school after she tried her hand at a pre-dental hygiene program. Rhodes earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and fine arts from the University of Michigan and worked as a graphic designer and art director. She also took classes at the College for Creative Studies. This isn’t Rhodes’ first solo show in the area — an exhibition of her work was on display at Services for Older Citizens — now The Helm at the Boll Life Center — in Grosse Pointe Farms in 2015. Rhodes retains a connection to The Helm, where she now teaches painting classes. “Everyone loves her,” Helm Program

Coordinator Margaret Cooper said. “They are so excited and proud of their work when they walk out. They’re learning a new technique (in each class).” Rhodes’ advice to young painters? “Get into a painting group with other peers of yours that you can share not only painting but also your life,” Rhodes said. “All of that connection really helps you as a person and as an artist.” She belongs to several painting groups who work together and critique each other’s work. Rhodes is also a member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. After living near the water for years — including decades in Grosse Pointe Park,

where she and her husband, Keith, raised their three children — Rhodes and her husband moved to a home on the water in Wolverine Lake about five years ago. “I love being on the lake,” Rhodes said. “A lot of (my work) is about water — even my abstracts.” She swims daily, weather permitting, and frequently paints from her deck or balcony. Living on the water “gives me a lot of inspiration,” Rhodes said. Posterity is located at 17005 Kercheval Ave. in The Village. Member of Tuskegee Airmen addresses Questers group BY K. MICHELLE MORAN

LEFT AND BELOW: Bill Welborne, a retired chief master sergeant who was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, addresses the Pettipointe Questers #243 May 4 at the Ewald Branch of the Grosse Pointe Public Library in Grosse Pointe Park. Welborne’s presentation on the history of the Tuskegee Airmen included a display of books, photos and multiple posters. He has traveled around the country sharing stories about this military outfit.

PARK — One local group got a chance to hear about history from someone who lived it. The Pettipointe Questers #243 invited Bill Welborne — a retired Tuskegee Airman — to talk about the famed military group during a meeting of the Questers chapter May 4 at the Ewald Branch of the Grosse Pointe Public Library in Grosse Pointe Park. Pettipointe Questers 2nd Vice President and Program Coordinator Dona DeSantis-Reynolds said Welborne was a “very important person” from a “very important time in our history that should be recognized.” She said she offered to pick up Welborne and give him a ride to the library, but the vibrant senior politely declined, saying he’d drive himself. “He’s just an amazing, amazing man,” DeSantis-Reynolds said. “He’s got a lot of spunk, a lot of energy … and I’m very honored to have him here today.” The Tuskegee Airmen — so named because they trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama — were the first African-American flying group in the U.S. military. As members of the U.S. Army Air Forces, they first trained during World War II. One of the three surviving members of the original group of Tuskegee Airmen, Welborne lives in Detroit and is chair of the Membership Committee. He has three children

and five grandchildren. He said he joined the military in 1948 and found himself stationed at a base in Biloxi, Mississippi, where his commanding officer told him, “‘I don’t like colored folks.’” “I had just finished school,” Welborne said. “I had just turned 18. It was tough down there.” See TUSKEGEE on page 11A

Tuskegee from page 10A

With poster boards featuring photos and information about some of the most notable Tuskegee Airmen, Welborne recounted the history of the group, which got its start in January 1941 as the first all-Black 99th Pursuit Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps (later renamed the U.S. Army Air Forces). Despite their successes and courage on the battlefield, the Tuskegee Airmen continuously faced racism and discrimination. A retired chief master sergeant, Welborne spent 33 years in the military. He now travels on speaking engagements to share the history of the Tuskegee Airmen with people around the country, a role that has taken him to California, Colorado, Illinois, South Carolina and Utah, among other places. During his military career, he said he visited 122 countries. “I loved it,” Welborne said. “Where (else) can I find a job that’s going to feed me, pay me and let me travel the world?” Welborne grew up in Detroit and Montgomery, Alabama. He was a crew chief — aka aircraft mechanic. He retired from active duty in 1981. “I used to tell the guys all the time, I’m

the best (mechanic) in the Air Force,” Welborne said. He said there were roughly 16,000 to 20,000 members of the Tuskegee Airmen, almost 1,000 of whom were pilots. DeSantis-Reynolds said they were donating $200 on behalf of the Questers toward Tuskegee Airmen efforts. Welborne said the money will be used for the Young Eagles program, in which veterans like him take youths on flights around the city as they introduce them to aviation. Started in 1992, the Young Eagles program gives youths ages 8 to 17 their first complimentary ride in an airplane. In 2022, the program undertook more than 500 flights. The flights take place out of Detroit City Airport on the second Sunday of the month from April to October, Welborne said. After his presentation, Welborne said he wants people to know that the Tuskegee Airmen “were dedicated and wanted to fight for their country.” While they might not have gotten the respect and accolades they deserved during their years of service, the Tuskegee Airmen are finally starting to get recognition for their heroism and patriotism. and honor back,” Banon said in a press release about what she sees in “Les Braves II.” “I see the courage of these young people leaving their country for others.” The stainless steel “Les Braves II” weighs 11.5 tons and took more than a week to arrive from France on a shipping vessel that docked at a port in New York. From there, the pieces that make up the sculpture were transported by rail to Livonia, where 15 containers housing sections of the work were driven by three trucks to The War Memorial. Unloading and assembling started Feb. 28 and continued March 1. “It’s more than exciting,” interim War Memorial President and CEO Maria Miller said. “I have the sense of awe.” Miller said “Les Braves II” represents “the bravery, the sacrifices” made by service members, but it’s also an uplifting work. “I love the concept of hope and wings that rise and the concept of freedom” encompassed by the sculpture, Miller said. “It’s come to mean a lot of different things.” Former War Memorial President and CEO Charles Burke, who left earlier this year, hand-selected each of the boulders that will hide the seawall from those on the ground looking at the sculpture. Miller said the boulders were placed on the grounds circa December 2022, in anticipation of the arrival and installation of “Les Braves II.” “We wanted to get the boulders placed before we got the sculpture in,” said Bill Hidinger, of Frank Rewold and Sons Inc., project superintendent for “Les Braves II.”

Besides being time-consuming and weather-dependent — unpredictable winter conditions delayed the initially planned installation of “Les Braves II” — workers faced other hurdles. While digging out the area for the concrete foundation, Hidinger said, they had to keep pumping out water. “The groundwater table in that area basically matches the lake (level),” Hidinger said. To prevent the sculpture from moving due to the lake and underground water, Hidinger said, each element of the sculpture is anchored by a 4-foot-deep concrete foundation, and each of those foundations has four helical piers that go down 25 feet. Hidinger postponed his retirement to oversee installation of “Les Braves II,” for which Miller said See SCULPTURE on page 13A

War Memorial officials were grateful and honored. “The team (at Frank Rewold & Sons Inc.) has a tremendous amount of pride in this job,” Miller said. Wesley Lawrence, the owner’s representative for Metro Business Service, served as the liaison for the whole team. He also worked on the new Fred M. Alger Center. “This has been a great venture,” Lawrence said. “This has been awesome.” “Les Braves II” is completed and on view now, but its installation will be marked more formally during Memorial Week at The War Memorial. The week will begin with the return of An Evening of Red, White and Blue, a gala at 6 p.m. May 24 that will include the formal dedication of the Fred M. Alger Center. Tickets cost $225 apiece. A public dedication ceremony for “Les Braves II” will take place at 6:30 p.m. May 25. It will include a performance by the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, metro Detroit musician Dave Bennett and a keynote speech from Professor Greg Jackson. This annual tradition is also free and open to the public, but attendees are being asked to register this year by visiting The War Memorial’s website. “Memorial Week has always been a time for our organization to remember the courage of ordinary men and women who have done the extraordinary in times of war and conflict,” Miller said in a press release. “We reflect on the selfless ones that serve our country and pay homage to those whose lives were sacrificed in battle and conflict. To take one day, or even one week, to pay tribute to those that gave so much, is the very least we can do as Americans.” Those who can’t attend any of the Memorial Week programs are welcome to come and see the sculpture whenever The War Memorial is open, except when there’s a wedding taking place, Miller said. “I want (people) to know that it is free to the public to come see this,” Miller said. “They can come and reflect and enjoy.” To register or for more information about any of the Memorial Week programs, visit www.warmemorial.org or call (313) 881-7511.

CITY — Students and Grosse Pointe City officials are working together to make the community more welcoming for butterflies. To mark Arbor Day, Grosse Pointe City Forester Brian Colter and City Urban Forestry Commission member Alaine Bush met with Maire Elementary School teacher Sarah Neely and a group of second grade students from the school’s Green Team to plant a tulip tree outside the school April 25. Green Team members are in charge of recycling at their school. Bush said the tulip tree “is the key host plant for the swallowtail (butterfly).” Caterpillars eat tulip tree leaves, Colter said. “It’s the tallest-growing tree in Michigan,” Colter said. “The Green Team requested it because it’s pollinator friendly.” Students at Maire have been studying swallowtail butterflies. Although the tulip tree was planted relatively close to an ash tree, Colter said that was done on purpose. He said the ash tree was diseased and needed to be removed. “I’m planting (this) replacement tree proactively,” Colter told the students. Colter said the City would be planting more trees in the area, including the white

oak, which “is very pollinator friendly” and supports 900 different species of caterpillars. “You’re really going to have a nice little pollinator stretch here,” Colter said of the area around the school. It’s news welcomed by Maire students and staff. “We have a butterfly garden on the other corner (of the school property), and we’ll benefit” from these trees, Neely said. Each student took a turn covering the new tree’s roots with dirt. Then, even though it was raining, they poured water at the base of the trunk. “Watering’s really the most important thing to do for a new tree,” Colter said. Mulch was placed around the base of the tree for a few reasons. Colter said the mulch moderates soil temperatures, so it doesn’t get too hot or too cold, and it also creates a physical barrier so that when landscapers are cutting or trimming the grass, they don’t hit or nick the trunk. This year marks Colter’s 30th anniversary as a forester in the Grosse Pointes. Call Staff Writer K. Michelle Moran at (586) 498-1047.

Squatters arrested for trespassing

Man found sleeping in home under construction

FARMS — A 45-year-old Detroit man was arrested after he reportedly was found sleeping May 3 inside a home in the 300 block of Lake Shore Road that was under construction. A contractor called police after arriving at the home to work on the property and found the suspect sleeping on the floor in a room on the third floor. Police said they found and confiscated a wooden mallet that was lying next to the suspect. According to a police report, the suspect claimed to be the president of the United States, an Olympic athlete and a Michigan State trooper. The suspect is said to have resisted police when they arrived to arrest him. Later, inside a jail cell, the suspect is said to have slammed his body and fists against the cell door, leading police to transport him to a nearby hospital because the suspect was deemed to be a safety concern to himself and needed to have a psychological evaluation. The suspect was arrested for entry with-

PARK — Police were called to a home in the 700 block of Grand Marais Street at around 11:41 a.m. May 5 after contractors working at the house discovered three individuals who were apparently squatting there. The three suspects — a 21-year-old Detroit woman, a 21-year-old Detroit man and a 17-year-old from Detroit — were said to have been arrested and charged with trespassing. Police said the suspects did “minimal damage” to the home in order to gain entry. Grosse Pointe City public safety officers and detectives are said to have assisted their counterparts in the Park on this incident.

Check fraud suspect sought

CITY — An unknown suspect is being sought by police after he was accused of having deposited a fraudulent check for $22,567 into an account at the Comerica Bank in Grosse Pointe City at around noon May 2. Police respond to customer trouble

FARMS — Police were called to a restaurant in the 18000 block of Mack Avenue at around 1:53 p.m. April 19 regarding an angry customer who was reportedly armed with a gun and causing a disturbance. The customer, a 38-year-old Roseville

man, was said by restaurant staff to have told them he was going out to his vehicle to get his gun because he was upset about the wait time and getting a cold hamburger. Police said the customer was frisked and found to not have any weapons on him, so he was told to leave the restaurant and not return. During the process of investigating this incident, police said they spoke with a 41-year-old Detroit man who had witnessed a verbal argument between the customer and a restaurant staff member. The Detroit man was found to be wanted on an outstanding felony warrant out of 37th District Court in Warren for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. The Detroit man was arrested on the warrant.

PARK — Grosse Pointe Park’s extreme emergency relief valve project, or EERV, is going to cost a lot more than engineers originally anticipated. Due to increased costs for materials and labor, what had been expected to be a nearly $2 million endeavor is now closer to $3 million. During a special meeting April 6, the Park City Council unanimously approved a low bid of $2,772,108.40 from L. D’Agostini and Sons. “We did receive four bids,” Assistant City Manager Warren Rothe said. “It was a competitive bid project.” City Engineer Patrick Droze, of OHM, said they received “favorable references” for L. D’Agostini and Sons, and OHM is currently working with the company on another project. A gift from the Cotton family — mother Shery and sons Sean

and Jon — saved the day for the city. Mayor Michele Hodges said the Cottons donated $900,000 to the city to cover the entire amount of the cost overrun. During the special meeting, the council voted unanimously to accept the donation. City Councilman Max Wiener said the gift is “going directly to the EERV” but needs to be put into the city’s water and sewer fund, from which payments for the EERV project will be made. “It’s extraordinary we have people willing to support (this),” Wiener said. It was a sentiment echoed by other city officials, including Hodges. “I think our Cotton family … has been an exceptional partner,” Hodges said. “It’s a testament to what a public-private partnership can do.” An EERV, which some other communities have, enables comSee EERV on page 19A

munities to discharge sewage into a body of water under specific circumstances but requires state approval to be implemented. Wiener recalled the “catastrophic storm” that hit the area in June 2021 — calculated as a 1,000-plus year storm. He said it resulted in “tens of millions (of dollars in) damage to the residents of Grosse Pointe Park.” In addition, Wiener noted the large impact the resulting devastation had on the environment, as hundreds of garbage trucks rolled through the community daily and towering piles of ruined personal belongings — including major appliances — were hauled away to landfills. Park officials have long explored the possibility of having an EERV for major storms that might result in basement flooding, but it is only now something they have been able to secure. “This is an insurance policy,” Wiener said. “We have been extremely focused and diligent in trying to dry out our (sewer) system.” He added that these efforts to dry out

the system are ongoing. “We will do everything we can to try to make sure we never have to use this system,” Wiener said. “But due to the (risk) to residents, we’re going to have this fail-safe.” In the meantime, city officials ask residents to do their part to prevent future flooding and basement backups. Hodges asked residents to continue to disconnect their downspouts from the sanitary sewer system. Downspout disconnection is required by city ordinance wherever possible. According to information on the Park’s website, a 1,500-square-foot home can take 25,000 gallons of water annually out of the sewer system just by disconnecting its downspouts. Work on the EERV is expected to start in mid-to-late July and will take roughly eight weeks, Wiener said. The valve is being installed at Patterson Park. Wiener said the park will remain open during the project, but there will be a period of approximately two to three days during which the park driveway won’t be accessible. Droze said the contractor will work as quickly as possible to minimize any disruptions. Call Staff Writer K. Michelle Moran at (586) 498-1047.

bers for both herself and her husband. She was then allegedly told not to tell the bank or police about it. When the woman and man went to the bank, they were informed it was a scam and were able to change their banking information before any money was taken. An officer advised both parties to check their credit report and make a police report if anything suspicious occurs.

Police respond to screaming, items smashed

Vehicle break-in reported

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — On April 10, residents around the Metro Woods apartment complex reported three dumpster fires in the area. One witness claimed a dark car was being driven around the complex. Clinton Township police officers spoke with someone in the area, though no arrests were made. CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township police officers were tapped in to help stop a suspect fleeing Roseville police on the evening of April 6. The suspect was fleeing after an alleged felony assault, and police were able to eventually stop the suspect’s Pontiac. A handgun was found in the suspect’s pocket, the license for which expired in 2020. Both the suspect and the gun were turned over to Roseville police.

Man cusses at workers

STERLING HEIGHTS — Sterling Heights police were called after a 20-something man wearing a black jacket and a ponytail allegedly was cussing at workers inside a store along 15 Mile Road, near Ryan Road April 9. Police said the man then went to the parking lot and was then seen behind a gas station car wash. The report did not describe what ultimately happened to him.

Bleeding man taken to hospital

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police went to a gas station in the 39000 block of Van Dyke Avenue April 9 after hearing that someone was being disorderly. Officers reportedly saw a man with a bleeding arm and bloody clothes who claimed that police had beaten him up. When the Fire Department came to check on the man, he allegedly said it was March when asked what month it was. The Fire Department took the man to a hospital.

Woman sought for retail fraud

GROSSE POINTE CITY — An unknown woman is accused of stealing nearly $50 worth of merchandise from a business in the 17000 block of Mack Avenue April 20.

Suspect sought for using counterfeit cash

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — An unknown suspect or suspects are said to have stolen a 2012 Chrysler 300 from the Ascension St. John Hospital parking lot in the 19200 block of Mack Avenue sometime between the hours of 6:45 p.m. April 20 and 7 a.m. April 21. The vehicle was locked at the time.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — According to police reports, an unknown suspect entered an unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the driveway of a home in the 2100 block of Hollywood Avenue between the hours of 10 p.m. April 20 and 8 a.m. April 21 and stole several Amazon packages and a gray backpack. The total value of the missing items is said to be about $60. The vehicle was unlocked at the time. In a second incident, an unknown suspect entered a vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in the 2300 block of Allard Avenue between the night of April 20 and 11 a.m. April 21 and stole a Rolex watch worth $14,000, along with a wallet. The victim told police the vehicle was locked but a key was left inside the passenger door pocket, so if anyone tried the vehicle door handle, they would have been able to get inside the vehicle. The missing items were removed from the center console.

More vehicles taken

GROSSE POINTE PARK — Between the hours of 2 p.m. April 19 and 7:09 a.m. April 20, an unknown suspect is said to have stolen a white 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix from where it was parked on the street in the 1000 block of Wayburn Street. Dispatch received a call from a neighbor who reportedly could hear someone screaming from a nearby apartment. Officers arrived on the scene and could hear loud screaming coming from the apartment. Officers made contact with the residents of the apartment. The argument was between a mother and her teenage daughter. The argument ensued over the mother taking her daughter’s phone away. The daughter then smashed her tablet and started kicking her mother, according to the police report. The daughter was arrested and transported to the Macomb County Juvenile Detention Center, according to police.

Mother pushed, hits head on counter

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 6:22 p.m. April 7, officers were dispatched to a residence in the area of Shelby and 25 Mile roads for a domestic violence complaint. Upon arrival, officers interviewed all the people in the home. According to the caller, she stated that she just came home from the bar with her daughter, at which point her daughter started yelling at her. The argument escalated to the point where the daughter pushed her mother to the floor in the kitchen. While falling, her head struck a cabinet, causing a laceration. Vehicle theft investigated

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 7:09 a.m. on April 16, a report was made about a vehicle theft that occurred between April 15 and April 16 in the 20000 block of Beaconsfield Avenue. Two officers were dispatched and were advised that Michigan State Police were out with a vehicle that appeared to have been freshly stolen and abandoned.
