Annual event celebrates 25th anniversary
BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
On your marks, get set, go — it’s time for the annual Eastpointe Cruisin’ Gratiot.
This year’s event marks a milestone as the classic cruise celebrates 25 years of hot rods, classic cars, poodle skirts, convertibles and fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror.
Eastpointe Cruisin’ Gratiot 2024 is set for June 15, but the festivities will kick off a few days earlier with car shows at local spots.
“Everybody has been working pretty hard on this
Eastpointe Cruisin’ Gratiot began 25 years ago as a way to bring people into the city and raise money for local charities. Eastpointe High School, shown above at a past cruise, will have a car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15. File photos by Erin Sanchez

cruise,” said Diane Reece-Seger, treasurer of the cruise committee, who co-owns Clovers Collision & Mechanical Repair with husband Mike Seger. “It’s our silver anniversary.”
When the cruise began in 1999, the idea behind it was to organize an annual car cruise that was family friendly and also highlighted local businesses. It also has served as a format to raise money for various charities in the city.
The cruise route is between Eight Mile and 10 Mile roads. Over the years, cruise organizers have been able to get the Michigan Department of Transportation to designate a special “cruise lane” closest to the median.
This year, car buffs can begin revving their engines at the Villa Restaurant car show from 4 to 8 p.m. June 12. The car show is sponsored by WOW Electronics and Villa
Restaurant. The restaurant is located at 21311 Gratiot Ave. Dash plaques will be given to the first 75 drivers, and prizes will be given at 7 p.m.
On the following evening, June 13, the car camaraderie will continue with another car show, this time at First State Bank, 16100 E. Nine Mile Road at Gratiot. The time: 4-8 p.m. Dash plaques will be given to the first 75 drivers, and prizes will be given at 7 p.m.
Everyone is invited back to the avenue June 14 for the Cloverleaf car show from 4 to 8 p.m. Cloverleaf is located at 24443 Gratiot Ave. The car show is sponsored by Mo-

a classroom far, far away …

ROSEVILLE — Darth Vader and the stormtroopers better watch out.
There is a group of local students who know how to use a lightsaber.
The force was with them May 17 when they knocked down statues of the movie antagonists, one at a time, during a “Star Wars” event in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program housed in Roseville Community Schools.
Teacher Natalie Grupido — wearing Yoda ears — threw a “Star Wars” party in which the students
enjoyed various activities and games that were out of this world. They got lost in space pinning buns on the head of Princess Leia, threw beanbags through Jabba the Hutt’s mouth and tried not to drop the droid when carrying spoons.
The middle school students even made a piñata to resemble the Death Star. Grupido, who is deaf, is such a fan of the films she brought a Yoda doll with which the students shook hands.
When it was time to relax for a while, the students gathered to watch the cartoon “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” with closed captions. Sign language interpreter Reyn Gilmore also signed the

ROSEVILLE — There is a section at Erin Grove Cemetery where about 100 infants were buried in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.
For many of them, their names weren’t known, and they were laid to rest without a funeral or headstone. Many of the babies were stillborn or died just a few days or weeks after birth.

Roseville City Council keeps it concise
BY NICK POWERS npowers@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE — If the Roseville City Council were running in a race, it would’ve taken home the gold last week. It sped through its May 28 agenda in just over 15 minutes. Council member Kurmmell Knox was excused from the meeting.
Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day
The council proclaimed June 1 as Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day.
The declaration describes idiopathic hypersomnia as “a serious, debilitating, and chronic neurological disorder that affects the brian’s ability to control sleep and wakefulness.”
According to the proclamation, the disorder is often misunderstood and can impact many facets of a person’s life. It goes on to state that research and treatment are limited. Symptoms include brain fog, non–restorSee MEETING on page 20A

NEWS & NOTES
RoseFest to offer up family fun June 15
ROSEVILLE — RoseFest is on track to take place June 15 at Veterans Memorial Park in Roseville.
This year’s festival will feature a zip line; pedal cars; magicians; balloon twisting; face painting; sidewalk chalk; a showing of the family movie “Trolls Band Together”; a foam party; family Nerf gun wars; a craft tent; dance and karate demonstrations; food trucks; a classic car show; and a photo booth. A DJ will provide musical entertainment and the Blue Cat Band will perform.
The festival was approved by the Roseville City Council at its special meeting March 19. A temporary traffic control order was approved for streets surrounding the park at the council’s May 28 meeting.
Roseville City Manager Ryan Monroe said things are falling into place for the upcoming festival.
“Council’s really excited and happy to bring this back,” Monroe said. “This was a yearly festival we had for many, many years. COVID kind of shut it down. We’re bringing it back. It’s a little bit smaller scale, but it’s going to be a completely free event for our residents.”
RoseFest will start up at noon and run until 10 p.m. The annual event has been running since 2014, but it was canceled in 2020-21 due to the global pandemic.
Michigan Fashion Week creates its own flair
DETROIT — The 12th annual Michigan Fashion Week is ready to take center stage. The in-vogue runway production will feature more than 100 local and international designers and vendors.
Four different shows in two days will spotlight the designs of various looks in women’s wear, men’s wear, couture, jewelry and accessories. Loren Hicks is the CEO and founder of Michigan Fashion Week. She originated the event in 2012 and modeled it after the fashion events of Paris, New York City and Los Angeles.
Two “streetwear” showcases — highlighting fun, casual styles — will be held June 7. The first will be from 5 to 6 p.m., and the second is set for 7 to 8 p.m.
Then it’s time to get out the glitz and glamor June 8 with two high-fashion shows featuring couture and evening wear. Two events are scheduled: 3-4 p.m. and 6-7 p.m.
All the fashion shows will be held at the Godfrey Hotel, 1401 Michigan Ave. Visit the website MichiganFashionWeek. com for information on how to register and for tickets.
Roseville student helps knock out violence
MACOMB COUNTY — Roseville High School senior Dalyace Griggs, center, was the second-place winner in the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office’s “Knocking Violence Out of My School” student video competition.
In an effort to prevent threats, violence, weapons and bullying in schools across Macomb County, Prosecutor Peter Lucido — in conjunction with A Brighter Michigan — spearheads the student video competition to empower students to address these issues within their peer groups.
Griggs received a $750 prize. She plans to attend college in the fall to become a teacher. She is pictured with Roseville High School teacher Joshua Kovach, left, and Lucido. To view the video, visit macombgov.org and click on the Macomb County prosecutor page.

Patrons of all ages can register for the summer reading program at the kickoff, or they can register through Beanstack on the website EastpointeMI.gov. There is a combination of reading- and library-related activities that participants can do to earn prizes.
Library staff planned the following summer reading activities. All events will begin at 6:30 p.m.

• “Wild About Books,” which is a live animal program on July 10.
• A “Bubble Dance Party” will be held July 17.
• A scavenger hunt and summer reading program finale is set for July 31.
ROSEVILLE
The Roseville Public Library is located at 29777 Gratiot Ave. The summer reading program, open to all ages, will be held from June 14 through July 26.
The annual kickoff event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. June 14. Participants can earn points and win prizes based upon how many books they read during the program. Additional points can be racked up by attending library programs and by completing various “missions,” such as reading within a specific genre, using the library’s digital resources, etc.
Patrons can join by registering with the READSquared app, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Paper reading logs also are available at the library.

Macomb Mall active shooter report was a false alarm
BY NICK POWERS npowers@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE — The Roseville Police Department responded to a 911 call about an active shooter at Macomb Mall at 7:20 p.m. May 23 that turned out to be phony.
“Our officers responded immediately and armed themselves as they are trained and entered the mall to take immediate action,” Robert Gudenau, deputy Roseville police chief, said in a prepared statement. “It was determined while on scene that this was a fake call and there was never an active shooter in the mall.”
The source of the call is currently being investigated by Roseville police.
“We take this matter extremely seriously and that is why the officers responded in the fashion they did,” Gudenau said in the prepared statement. “It is our priority to maintain peace and safety to the public we serve.”
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said his office has a zero tolerance policy on false alarms.
“We will not tolerate or stand for people who are making false claims, because it’s against the law,” Lucido said. “Making a false claim like that is putting people in jeopardy. It will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. No one needs to be put through a traumatic experience, especially one that’s false.”
Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin said May 31 that there had been no arrests made in connection to the false alarm.

Pedestrian shot in road rage incident
BY ANDY KOZLOWSKI akozlowski@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — A woman out for a walk reportedly was shot by a motorist after the driver allegedly was angered in an exchange of words with the woman’s acquaintance.
The incident occurred at around 10:10 p.m. May 21. Eastpointe police officers were dispatched to the area of David and Collinson avenues on report of an assault with intent to murder.
According to Eastpointe Police Lt. Alexander Holish, the first officer at the scene located a female victim, 36, who was heavily bleeding after suffering two gunshot wounds to the same leg.
The responding officer used a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, which might have saved her life, Holish said. Medics arrived shortly afterward and transported her to a local hospital.
At press time, she was said to be in stable condition.
On interviewing her, officers learned that she apparently had been walking with a man on David Avenue, heading toward Collinson Avenue, when they were nearly hit by a black four-door sedan that reportedly ran a stop sign.

Cruise Day will be June 15 at Eastpointe High School, 15501 Couzens Ave., at Gratiot Avenue just south of Nine Mile Road. There will be a car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., sponsored by Anderson, Eckstein & Westrick.
A prayer service will begin at 11 a.m. The VIP parade will begin at 1 p.m. as local and state dignitaries ride the cruise route in convertibles. The VIP procession takes about 30 minutes, and at 1:30 p.m. the official cruise lane will open. The dedicated cruise lane will officially close at 7 p.m.
Get ready for some live music at 2 p.m. at the high school with a performance by the ShamRock Jazz Orchestra. The SJO is composed mostly of East Detroit High School alumni. The SJO members are from different graduating classes, the oldest member from the Class of 1957. The talented musicians put their own spin on songs from the ’50s through the ’80s.
On cruise day, be on the lookout for Dominic Miller. The 14-year-old Eastpointe resident will be collecting pajamas for his charity, Dominic’s Christmas Wish. Miller will have a collection basket set up where new pajamas can be dropped off for children in need. All sizes, birth through adult, are accepted.
A familiar voice to rock ‘n’ roll fans will emerge during the festivities, because retired local radio disc jockey Jim JJ Johnson is this year’s grand marshal. He will be in the VIP parade June 15 and also is scheduled to make
appearances at the car shows.
“He’ll be there all four days,” said Eastpointe City Council member Harvey Curley, president of the Eastpointe Cruisin’ Gratiot Committee. “People want to hear his voice. They want to say ‘hi’ to him.”
Curley was at the very first cruise back in 1999.
“We’ve improved it year after year. The volunteers have been involved. People in the community want to help. They want to participate,” Curley said. “We’ve always done this to bring people into Eastpointe. It helps businesses.”

MAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE
BY ANDY KOZLOWSKI akozlowski@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — A pedestrian was fatally injured when he attempted to cross a road outside of a designated crosswalk and was struck by a passing vehicle.
The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. May 26. Eastpointe police officers were dispatched to the area of Nine Mile Road near Shakespeare Avenue on word of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle. The caller informed dispatchers that the pedestrian was seriously injured.
Officers arrived at the scene at approximately the same time as paramedics, who immediately conveyed the pedestrian to a local hospital. The pedestrian — a 60-year-old Eastpointe man — had suffered a potential head injury. He died from his injuries later that day, police said.
An investigation revealed that the pedestrian was struck when he allegedly tried to cross Nine Mile Road near Shakespeare Avenue in a construction zone outside of a crosswalk.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, police said, and cooperated with detectives. No alcohol or drugs appeared to have been involved. Anyone who might have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the detective on the case at (586) 445-5100, ext. 1022.
Eastpointe Police Lt. Alexander Holish said pedestrians must always be vigilant when walking near traffic and not assume that drivers will see them or yield to them.
“Please, always try to cross the street at the crosswalk. Follow traffic signals while doing so. Always use the sidewalk, and double-check for vehicles traveling on the roadway before crossing,” Holish said. “The Eastpointe Police Department wants to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

cartoon for them. The staff all wore black Tshirts that read, “The Deaf Star.”
Local “Star Wars” fan Ben Flanagan brought much of the memorabilia, including an R2-D2 figure. For first grader Lucas Rice, shooting hoops at the basketball net was the best part. Jayla Sneddon “liked all of it.”
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program, operated and funded through the Macomb Intermediate School District, is open to Macomb County students. The elementary program is held at Dort Elementary School in two classrooms and at Roseville Middle School in one classroom.
Grupido, who grew up in Roseville, attended the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program as a student. Speaking to the Eastsider through sign language interpreter Marta Crossley, Grupido shared information about the “Star Wars” party and the program. She centers the school year around a theme.
“Everyone sees each other. They can get out of their norms and just have fun,” Grupido said. “We have an event every spring. Last year we did Harry Potter, and next year we’ll do Marvel.”
If she had to describe the students in one word, she would pick “curious.” In 2022, Grupido was named as the Macomb County Middle School Teacher of the Year
in a program organized through the Macomb Intermediate School District.
Grupido teaches using the American Sign Language and English bilingual philosophy, in which American Sign Language is used as direct instruction and English is in print.
“The point of this is to mentor learning and develop leadership skills. This is an opportunity for all of them to learn through interaction,” Grupido said. “They can learn a lot of social behavior.”
Students are placed in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program based on their individualized education program. The high school program is housed at Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores.
“It’s a total communication program. It’s a regular classroom with the core curriculum,” said Teresa Tomala, Roseville Community Schools director of special education. “We use sign language and lip reading. Some students have hearing aids or cochlear implants. The degrees of hearing vary.”
The program provides training in listening, speaking, speech reading, signing and fingerspelling. Students are taught by teachers and aides who use sign language to teach and communicate with the students. The students, too, are enrolled in art, music and physical education classes. The students also attend regular education classes while in the program.

David Kern and Beverly Bishop decided they wanted to give the babies a proper resting place. They conducted research to determine the identities of the babies. Through their diligence, Kern and Bishop were able to identify the babies at the cemetery, which is located at 31850 Little Mack Ave.
Each newborn now has a marker at his or her grave with the newborn’s name, gender, date of birth and date of death. Each marker reads “ANGEL GARDEN” and “Suffer the little children unto me sayeth the Lord.”
On the late morning of May 18, a group of local residents gathered with Kern and Bishop at the cemetery for its Angel Garden dedication. Kern officiated the ceremony that included prayers.
“I just wanted to make sure their identities are known. Back then, if the baby wasn’t baptized, they didn’t bury it in a Catholic cemetery or a religious cemetery,” Kern said. “It was brought to a public cemetery. The funeral home came up, dug a hole and put the baby in. They were probably just buried in something small, maybe a box or something. There was no stone, no clergy, no dedica-
tion. I felt they needed to be known. They were people.”
Kern and Bishop relied on handwritten notes, funeral home records, cemetery index cards, obituaries and death certificates to name the infants. The deceased were from Macomb County and some were born to soldiers temporarily stationed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township.
“After being ‘lost’ for decades, the infants are dignified with an individual marker to preserve human dignity and the history of the families interred here,” Bishop said. “Improvements in medicine now saves many infants that previously died or were stillborn.”
It’s unclear why proper burials weren’t done decades ago.
“It’s a mystery to me,” Kern said, thinking cost might have been an issue. “Back then, a lot of families couldn’t afford it. Throughout the cemetery, there are babies that are with families. You know they were taken care of because of a funeral. These had none. We found some of them through funeral records, because the funeral homes had to bury them.”
In addition to the 100 newborns honored in the Angel Garden, Kern said there are more infants in a nearby section that he and Bishop are working to identify.
“It’s wonderful that they’re doing this,”
said St. Clair Shores resident Marianne Zmuda, who attended the ceremony.
The pair want families of the babies to know about the Angel Garden so they can visit and place gravestones at the site of their loved ones.
A few family members have since done that. Gerald Fitch, of Marine City, and his brothers bought one for their baby sister, Kathleen Dawn Fitch, who was born Aug. 14, 1960, and died one month later. Fitch attended last month’s dedication with his wife, Kerry Fitch, where he placed a red rose at his sister’s grave.
“I’m just glad to show my appreciation
to the cemetery and the caretakers,” he said.
Kern resides in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He did research on the Angel Garden project from out of state. He has close ties to Erin Grove Cemetery. His greatgrandfather was one of the original trustees of the cemetery.
“I used to come out as a boy and I would help out cleaning up the place,” Kern said.
For more information on the Angel Garden at Erin Grove Cemetery, visit eringrovecemeteryassn.com. Monetary donations for the nonprofit cemetery are always welcome.

Lot gets rezoned
A vacant lot at 30006 Utica Road, at the intersection with Common Road and near the Silver Maple condominiums, was rezoned from local business (B-1) to multiple family low rise (RM-1).
“That property would be rezoned to a multifamily low rise, which is consistent with our master plan and very similar to other properties in that area,” Roseville City Manager Ryan Monroe said at the meeting.
The rezoning was unanimously approved by council.
Marijuana signage change
The council once again updated its ordinance about marijuana signage.
“At the time there was a thought, when the ordinances were adopted, that they wanted to minimize what was said on the signage,” Roseville City Attorney Tim Tomlinson said, explaining why the original ordinance was in place.
At its April 23 meeting, the council unanimously voted to amend its ordinance to allow for marijuana-releated businesses in the city to have signs that contain the terms “grass,” “420,” “ganja,” “dank” and “pot” and related imagery.
Tomlinson said the change at the April meeting was too broad. The city made the ordinance more specific. The specific terms “grass,” “420,” “ganga,” “dank,” “mary jane” and “pot” are now not allowed. Related words, for example “buds,” would be allowed under the amended ordinance. Imagery that “evokes” marijuana is allowed but specific images (leaves and green crosses) are not allowed.

CRIME WATCH
Larceny at English Gardens
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, Eastpointe police officers were dispatched to English Gardens on Kelly Road at around 10:40 a.m. May 19 to investigate a larceny that occurred the night prior. Police were told that three men arrived in a black Ford F-150 pickup truck that night, loaded up the truck bed with numerous flower pots and left the scene. Later in the morning, they returned, jumped the fence and reportedly stole clay pots along with other gardening items. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the detectives on the case at (586) 445-9416.
Vehicle flees police
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, Eastpointe police officers attempted to stop a gray Dodge Challenger and a white Dodge Charger that were driving together, citing civil infractions. Police initiated contact with them in the area of Gratiot Avenue and Toepfer Drive.
The driver of the Charger reportedly cooperated and pulled over upon being signaled by police. The driver of the Challenger, however, allegedly decided to flee. The driver of the Charger was issued civil infractions and released, while the driver of the Challenger was located a short time later and taken into custody, and the vehicle was impounded.
At press time, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office was to review the case and possibly issue charges against the driver of the Challenger, a 22-year-old man from Detroit.
“The lesson in this situation is obvious: There is no need to flee from traffic stops,” said Eastpointe Police Lt. Alexander Holish. “If a police officer is pulling you over, just stop. It’s not worth fleeing from a ticket. Chances of you being identified and subsequently arrested are very high.”
Anyone with more information on these crimes or others can call Eastpointe police at (586) 445-5100.

Beaconsfield reopens as county completes infrastructure project
BY BRIAN WELLS bwells@candgnews.com
EASTPOINTE — A section of Beaconsfield Avenue that was closed for over a year has reopened after a major underground infrastructure project was completed in Eastpointe.
In September 2022, Macomb County Public Works began excavation on what the
department has called an “in-system storage” project on Beaconsfield Avenue, south of Nine Mile Road in Eastpointe.
Workers dug approximately 50 feet below ground to reach a sewer pipe, which they then removed a section of to install a rubber weir. The weir, or dam, can be inflated during a heavy rain event and then released to allow the flow to be sent to the Great Lakes

Wanted: green thumbs to help beautify flower beds
EASTPOINTE — Representatives from the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society are looking for volunteers to help them beautify the flower beds in front of the museum.
The thought is to divide the bed into sections and have people adopt a section. The museum does have garden tools in stock, and volunteers would have to come during open hours to use them. Otherwise, residents could work on the adopted bed at their leisure.
If interested, reach out to the museum at mimths@mimths.org.

Panthers regain momentum, take MAC Silver dual-meet title
BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com
ROSEVILLE — A change of scenery can do wonders, and the Roseville boys track and field program was in need of a new look.
All throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, Roseville spent the better part of its years at the bottom of the Macomb Area Conference Gold, compiling a league win here and there but never anything else to show for it.
Understanding its struggles, Roseville dropped down to the MAC Silver in hopes of getting a fresh look and seeing some progress, and the Panthers did just that.
Under head coach Thomas Snowden, who took the job at the start of the 20182019 season, Roseville went unbeaten in the league to earn the MAC Silver dual-meet title. Roseville then dropped the MAC Silver divisional meet to Madison Heights Lamphere.
Snowden, the running backs coach for the school’s talented football team, said Roseville’s transformation on the track was courtesy of numerous athletes all improving.
“We had more depth this year than I’ve had in the past, so that was definitely helpful,” Snowden said. “I had some distance runners, which I usually lacked. My speed guys were really good and I had a good 100, and the 4x100 and 4x200 teams were rock solid.”
Senior Ayres Hollins, junior Herman Searcy and sophomore Terrence Bowers led the way in the 100-meter as Searcy took first at the divisional meet on May 14 at Warren Lincoln High School.
Roseville’s 4x100 and 4x200 stole the show as Hollins, Searcy, junior Darius Iverson and junior Desmond Straughton earned first in the 4x100 and Searcy, Iverson, sophomore Milton Standifer IV and junior Elizah Jolly took first in the 4x200.
Senior Michael Chastine was efficient in the 110-meter hurdles and both high jump and long jump, while junior Shawn Jones finished third in shot put and sophomore Daniel Kesterson posted impressive times in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter at the divisional meet.
Kesterson is one of many runners Snowden hopes to have competing in distance events in the future, which hasn’t been Roseville’s strong suit in the past.
“We’ve gotten better each year, and the numbers have gotten better each year,” Snowden said. “The distance program is something I’ve been focused on with grow-

ing it and convincing guys to run it. Everybody is not a sprinter. That’s been the big thing.”
Roseville will graduate some key pieces heading into next year, but for Snowden and company, it’s all about keeping the momentum going and progressing each year.
A dual-meet league title is a great step forward, but Snowden said he has larger goals in mind for the program based on the expectation he sets for his guys.

Water Authority’s Detroit wastewater plant for proper treatment rather than being discharged into Lake St. Clair.
A press release from Macomb County Public Works states that the project will reduce combined sewer overflows, or CSOs, by approximately 10% to 15%. The project serves the drainage district that handles all the combined stormwater and sanitary flow from Eastpointe and 40% of St. Clair Shores, the press release states.
“This is a significant day and proves the commitment and political will by Macomb County to lead by example in the region by investing in underground infrastructure to protect Lake St. Clair and improve water quality,” Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller said in a prepared statement. “Generations of people will benefit.”
Beaconsfield Avenue had been closed from Nine Mile Road south to Rosetta Avenue since the project began, but was reopened May 23.
Eastpointe City Manager Mariah Walton said city officials had not heard of any concerns from residents in the area during or after completion of the project.
“The county and contractors were very mindful of residents in the area and maintained contact to provide updates on the project so (the residents) were aware of what was happening and their timeframe,” she said in an email.
every day,” Snowden said. “There’s no ins and outs and not knowing what’s expected. Every day, the kids know they have to show up, compete and work hard. That’s just our motto. That’s what we’re building and continue to build at Roseville. We’re going to compete every day. Even in the track program, that’s what we continue to push. It’s no different in football or basketball. That’s just where we’re at, and the track program is trying to get there to compete for state titles, regionals and division championships just like our football and basketball program is doing each year.”
Call Staff Writer Jonathan Szczepaniak at (586) 498-1090.
Walton added that the county also worked well with the city’s Department of Public Works and Service to keep them updated on the project.
“We appreciated the investment in the community,” she said.
The project cost $13 million and was funded mostly by American Rescue Plan Act funds, of which $8.8 million had been allocated by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. Norb Franz, communications manager for Macomb County Public Works, said the remaining funding came from a combination of grants and drainage district funding. There was no increase in rates to the residents of Eastpointe and St. Clair Shores, he added.
In addition to the underground infrastructure work, the project also included new concrete pavement and curbs to restore the intersection of Beaconsfield Avenue and Oak Avenue.
Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 291-7637.
Road rage
from page 8A
er of the sedan, at which point the driver is said to have turned around and continued the exchange of words. The suspect then reportedly produced a handgun and fired at the man, missing him and hitting the woman instead. The driver then fled the scene.
At press time, police were still looking for additional leads on the culprit. Anyone with more information is asked to contact
the detective working the case at (586) 445-9416.
“We are taking this very seriously and hoping the public can assist with information that will lead to the suspect’s identity and subsequent apprehension,” Holish said. “Any road rage can be dangerous. It is always a good idea to walk away from any altercation if possible. However, what the suspect did in this case is horrifying. He tried to take two lives because someone was simply displeased with his driving and yelled at him.”
Public Budget Hearings will be held for the following Public School Academy: Reach-25275 Chippendale St., Roseville-586-498-9171-June 12, 7am
Copies of the budgets for the listed Public School Academy will be available at the school offce.
