Central Michigan University junior Marisa Fisher earned a $2,500 Carl Parsell Scholarship June 8. The scholarship is designed to assist Michigan family members of people who belong to either the Michigan Association of Police, the Michigan Association of Public Employees or the Michigan Association of Fire Fighters unions. Fisher is a Class of 2021 Stevenson High School graduate, and she aspires to someday become a fashion stylist or work for a fashion magazine. Her mother works at the Sterling Heights Police Department as an administrative secretary. “School can be very expensive, but getting support from different scholarships is very helpful, because I am also adding another minor and that adds a lot more classes,” Marisa Fisher said in a statement. “Getting a Carl Parsell Scholarship made it easier to be confident in my decision to add a minor in Journalism, instead of pushing it aside until I have more money to do it or just learning it myself.”

she got from the City Development Department, the study concludes that the city’s tree canopy is “relatively young and homogenous.” “Continuing with tree planting of diverse species along with high quality maintenance of the city’s young and established trees will help in achieving the ideal diversity of age class and species distribution,” Davis said. Davis said the canopy is healthy overall, as 94% of its almost 35,000 trees were in good or fair condition. “Only 1,290 were recommended to be removed, and 171 stumps were identified for removal,” she added. For years, some Sterling Heights officials have talked about increasing the tree canopy, and environmental concerns ultimately led to the formation of the city’s Sustainability Commission, which formed a Sustainability Plan in 2021. That Sustainability Plan said the city’s tree canopy is too sparse and cited development and the emerald ash borer as contributing factors. It said the city’s tree canopy

was measured at around 19% of city land in 2016, and the city has since made 30% its goal. The plan mentions tree benefits including helping wildlife, enhancing natural beauty, increasing property values and reducing the need for residential heating and air conditioning. The plan suggests that the city consider buying vacant land “for preservation and/or recreation.” In addition, the Sustainability Plan has several tree-related goals, including teaching the public about them their benefits, “reforesting residential areas,” and preserving existing trees. According to the Sterling Heights Sustainability Commission’s Nathan Inks, Sterling Heights has succeeded at accomplishing some of these goals. He said the city updated its tree preservation ordinance in 2022 to better protect valuable “landmark trees” that provide environmental benefits. And Inks added that the city also finished its tree inventory. “That inventory is a helpful step toward creating a natural features map and will enable the City to analyze areas where tree planting should be prioritized,” he said in a city email.

Inks said the city still has to complete its goals of public education and reforesting residential spaces. One reforestation method the city has looked at is microforests. At a January 2022 meeting, city officials discussed options for spending anticipated American Rescue Plan Act funds, and the topic of microforests came up. Sterling Heights Assistant City Manager Jeff Bahorski raised the possibility of creating a community garden and microforest for around $1.25 million that he said would tie in with the city’s sustainability goals. Bahorski described a microforest as a mass of trees and thick vegetation that can be planted within 1,000 square feet. He said it becomes an “oasis for biodiversity” that takes around three years to be self-sustaining and 10 years to fully grow. “If funded through ARPA, this initiative will start with site selection for the city’s first microforest,” he said. “We hope to make this a community effort by seeking groups and individuals interested in volunteering their time and talent to the project. Once the city is able to prove the concept through this first microforest, there is great opportunity to address other sites and start the greening of Sterling Heights.”

In a city email, Bahorski said the city is still looking at its options on public property to eventually pick a spot or two to put in a microforest. “The initial sites will be smaller, approximately 1,000 to 2,000 square feet, which is a size that allows the city to work out the soil composition and tree mix, which are essential factors to a successful microforest,” he said. “The initial plantings are targeted in the spring or fall of 2024, with larger-scale plantings in 2025.” Inks said he’d like to see at least one microforest — or possibly a few — as part of the upcoming redevelopment of the Lakeside Mall area. “Because much of the property is proposed to be completely redeveloped, microforest placement could be easily incorporated into the planning of the development,” he said. “But I think a microforest could be appropriate in any area of the city planned for mixed-use development, as a microforest would provide a nice pedestrian amenity.” Learn more about Sterling Heights by visiting www.sterling-heights.net or by calling (586) 446-2489. James and Hackel talk about defense, auto industries BY DEAN VAGLIA dvaglia@candgnews.com

DETROIT — In a time where finances are all over the headlines, two of the region’s most prominent politicians took time in late June to discuss the state of Macomb County’s economy. U.S. Rep. John James, R-Shelby Township, and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel joined Michigan business leaders for the “State of the Economy” forum in Detroit on June 26, held at the offices of law firm Butzel Long and sponsored by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. The two elected leaders addressed the county’s defense and transportation industries. A West Point graduate and former U.S. Army helicopter pilot, James expressed interest in securing a new fighter program for Selfridge Air National Guard Base. “When you look at the degradation of our fighting force here in Michigan — the A-10 Warthog, that fighter mission is being run off — we need to make sure that we have a fighter to replace it here,” James said. “We’re going to lose not only the economic impact but the likelihood of getting another fighter here. We cannot allow that to happen.”

Currently home to KC-135 aerial refuting and A-10 attack jet missions, local officials have been trying to secure a fighter mission as the U.S. Air Force remains on track to eliminate its A-10 programs. A recent attempt to secure a training school for foreign F-35 fighter jet pilots failed earlier this year, but the base recently unveiled a new hangar for servicing fighter jets. Hackel shared news about a runway reconfiguration that could make Selfridge a more attractive destination for a future fighter jet mission by shifting the runway north to reduce the base’s effect on a residential neighborhood. Moving into the automotive part of the discussion, Hackel spoke about how the county is improving its infrastructure. He said one such way of doing that is by building high-tech road corridors. “We have the most connected corridors than any other county, not only in the state of Michigan, but I dare say the entire country,” Hackel said. “We started years ago when they started implementing some of the technology for cameras to visualize what’s happening on our roads.” The potential of the connected corridors includes changing traffic light patterns See DEFENSE on page 14A

HOMES Secondhand items can cut costs and add style to a new place 8A/ STERLING HEIGHTS SENTRY • JULY 12, 2023

BY ALYSSA OCHSS aochss@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — Furnishing a new home can be daunting, but buying used items from Facebook Marketplace and secondhand stores can cut down on costs while adding personal flair. Brianne Minaudo has a job in New York and is split between Michigan, where she resides, and the Empire State. She used to have a house in north Rochester, Michigan, but sold it to get something smaller. Recently, she has been cleared to spend more time in Michigan. She was tired of buying new furniture and said her one rule for her condo was to find things used, preloved or at an outlet. Foundational things such as curtain rods could be purchased new. She collected things from places such as antique stores, old book stores, Facebook Marketplace, clearance sections and other places. She’s even got some things from her grandma and friends. One of her favorite places is called Lamb’s Tail Antiques, which is an antique store on a farm in Armada. Minaudo also decorates with things she already has and feels like she does something called “dopamine decorating.” It’s decorating with items and things that make you happy. “Like just reminders instead of just, you know, going to Pottery Barn and plugging in what’s trendy. I like to do this a lot better,” Minaudo said. Going on a marketplace such as Facebook, Minaudo said, is where she recommends beginners go to get furniture and other decorations for their spaces. “I’d rather pay people who don’t have the use for it instead of Home Depot or Target or bigger corporations who don’t need it as much,” Minaudo said. She said it depends on the style, but she also frequents antique stores because she loves vintage style. She recommends following people who have storefronts on Amazon or who do Ikea hacks — customizing Ikea products. Another perk of buying secondhand is that it’s good for the environment. “Because you’re not just buying new and then having all this waste going everywhere as well; you’re giving it a new life,” Minaudo said. Her friends and family helped at her place with painting, having an eye for style or fixing up different fixtures. She said her little sister helps with ideas for decor and goes to antique shops with her. Kellen James, Minaudo’s partner, said it’s been a lot of fun helping her out.

She said she thinks people know their style, but they’re hesitant, and she sees this in people she’s helped with decorating. “They’ll already know what they want; they’re just almost, like, hesitant or afraid to say, ‘I like this,’ and commit to it because they’re afraid to be wrong,” Minaudo said. ”But when you’re doing something like your home or your clothes, you can’t be wrong if you like it.” Call Staff Writer Alyssa Ochss at (586) 498-1103.

“She has such an amazing vision of what she wants and how to get it, and she’s just an amazing decorator,” James said. He said Minaudo has really made their condo feel like a home. “It just feels like home because she makes it such a warm and inviting place and it’s beautifully put together,” James said. Both Minaudo and James have a lot of fun working on projects and going shopping for decor and furniture. Minaudo said she’s just getting into repainting and refurbishing furniture. “I’ve seen on social media people who just take the most beat up, kind of awful pieces and make it into something so cool and beautiful. Plan will smooth the way for the anticipated rollout of EV-related infrastructure throughout the city. They believe that the move will make the city a more sustainable place by reducing pollution. Sterling Heights and consulting firm Wade Trim teamed up to craft the overarching EV master plan. The city reportedly got $28,648 from a Southeast Michigan Council of Governments grant program to fund the EV plan. The city also reportedly paid a $6,352 contribution. City Manager Mark Vanderpool called the developments with EV vehicles “super exciting.” “As a community, we have to be well prepared for this wave of electrical vehicle rollout over the next 10 years,” he said. “It’s growing exponentially every year.” According to City Planner II Alexis Richards, EVs are all-electric vehicles that must be plugged into the power grid to power up. She said their benefits include reducing pollution. Even taking manufacturing and battery production into account, an electric vehicle produces around half the lifetime emissions that an internal combustion engine vehicle does, she said. According to the Sterling Heights Sustainability Plan, the city has a goal of advancing the spread of electric vehicle infrastructure and purchasing electric city vehicles. Besides offering charging stations on city property, the city also, among other things, wants to amend zoning regulations to be more amenable to EV charging stations and EV parking spaces. Richards explained some other things that the city wants to do under this EV master plan. “From an electrification policy (standpoint), the city should consider adopting policies designed to promote renewable energy and generation and on-site storage at city properties; prepare for conversion of our fleet to EVs; develop construction standards and specifications to ensure all city capital projects are EV-ready; and then further, the city should encourage the Federal Highway Administration to include M-59 and M-53 as EV corridors to open us up for federal funding,” she said.

timeline predicts their installation by the end of 2023. Officials say the city will give the General Motors Dealer Community Charging Program access to space to install the infrastructure, and “GM Dealers will underwrite the cost of the charging stations.” An EV charging company named Flo will supply the Level 2 charging stations, and State Electric Co. will do the installation and handle upkeep, the city added. According to the city, each new charging station can handle two vehicles at once. Charging stations will be on city property. The City Hall area will get four, the Community Center will get two more on top of the one it already has, the Senior Center will get one, and the Department of Public Works facility will get one. Among the parks, Dodge Park will have three, Delia will have three, Baumgartner will have one and Nelson will have one. Lastly, Schoenherr Towers will have one station. Currently, the city has at least five publicly accessible stations right now, including the Community Center one, Richards said. EV charging is currently free by the Community Center, though she explained that plugging in vehicles could carry a price someday. “As a part of this master planning process, for long-term scalability, the city should consider charging a fee potentially to cover maintenance for the charger,” she said. According to the city’s Facebook posts, people who use the upcoming EV stations will pay the “market rate” to charge their vehicles. Vanderpool added that the City Council still has to approve the required leases for

the charging stations, adding that the agreements should be ready for consideration by July. He added that, if all goes according to plan, the new stations should be up and ready by the end of 2023. “It’s just a start,” he said. “You know, there will be eventually hundreds, if not thousands, of charging stations throughout the city. But this is a unique partnership that allows us to get these charging stations installed quickly throughout the city.” When it was time for City Council members to speak, Mayor Pro Tem Liz Sierawski said her children who live in California experience blackouts with a grid that strains even under air conditioner usage. She asked Greg Crnkovich, from State Electric, what he has heard from local utility companies about preparing Michigan’s grid for vehicle electrification. Crnkovich said the utilities know that the demand for EV charg-

ing is coming. “They’re definitely building up the grid in preparation for it,” he said. “And much of the charging that happens in residential applications usually happens at night, so that doesn’t affect the grid. … They’re just building out the rest of the grid in anticipation for some of this public charging and stuff.” Sierawski added that, due to the battery, electric vehicles tend to be significantly heavier than comparable internal combustion engine vehicles. “This is going to put a lot of stress on our roads and our infrastructure,” she said. “So there is still cost to the city in some form, so we need to understand that going forward.” Find out more about the Sterling Heights EV Charging Station Master Plan by visiting sterling-heights.net/EVcharging. in real time and notifying drivers of obstacles ahead of them. James focused his remarks on the auto industry, expressing a disinterest at emissions regulations set to impact cars for model year 2027 and his disappointment toward the industry for not aggressively opposing them. The White House is directing companies to have at least half of all passenger cars and light trucks sold in 2030, and all medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles sold in 2040, be “zero emission,” and James in particular took issue with the penalties for noncompliance. “The penalties that will happen between when this regulation goes into effect

On June 2 at Utica High School, Ford (30-12) achieved the first step on its list of goals with a 7-6 win over Utica to earn the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 District 26 title. However, the job wasn’t finished. Behind an impressive showing on both sides of the field, Ford outscored Bloomfield Hills and Warren Regina 25-6 collectively to take home the MHSAA Region 7 title on June 10 at Troy Athens High School. Talk about setting the tone: senior Eliana Karas batted 7-for-8 with two home runs and 6 RBIs through both regional matchups as Ford’s offense exploded onto the scene. Senior Rylee Hesske, junior Addison Hill, junior Gabriella Mecca, junior Samantha Yantus and Nilson continued to keep the bats going alongside Karas. Combine that with a dynamic pitching duo of junior Jade Kupsky and sophomore Jenna Walters, and Ford was nearly untouchable throughout the state tournament. For all that firepower, it’s hard to believe that it’s not the team’s strongest attribute. The team’s strongest attribute is its bond. “It’s really more like a sisterhood,” Nilson said. “Previous years, there were cliques, but we do everything together. I know that even if it’s not related to softball or I’m going through something, one of the girls has my back. It doesn’t matter if you’re a junior or a sophomore. I know that the team is there for each other no matter what.” Ford was together on the state tourna-

… will result in $90 billion (in) additional costs to the industry, and that’s not including an additional $9 billion in penalties,” James said. “If you take a look at the nearly $100 billion that would be through the enactment of this regulation at the end of that model year, it is the government taking a punitive approach to businesses.” James also expressed skepticism at the focus on electrification as a substitute for gas-powered cars, stating his desire for “an all-the-above energy approach” for future cars. “I have a hybrid; I have nothing against an ‘all-the-above’ energy approach,” James said. “If you want a battery car, get a battery car, but forcing people into one thing or another and then penalizing our job creators for noncompliance on a short or nearly impossible timeline is a recipe for disaster.”

ment journey, which concluded in a quarterfinals loss to Lake Orion June 14 at Troy Athens High School. With the amount of talent at Ford, there’s an expectation that this team should be right back up there in 2024 with Kupsky, Yantus, Mecca, Hill and Walters at the helm, but it’s a tough goodbye for Nilson, Karas and Hesske, who have been staples in the program since stepping onto the field. The seniors wanted to lay a foundation for the underclassmen to follow next season, and Ford coach Matthew Joseph said they did just that. “They’ve done an unbelievable job of leading this team, and in different ways,” Joseph said. “It’s been the work ethic that I’ve been most happy with. When your seniors are your hardest workers, everything kind of falls in place because that’s status quo. It says to the kids coming that, ‘OK, that’s what we’re supposed to do.’ Everybody is working hard and I don’t have to stress that because they get it done.” Ford, who competed in the Macomb Area Conference-Red this season, will look to earn the school’s first league title since 2012 next year, and it’ll be up to the 2024 senior class to continue the leadership tradition. By the looks of this season, they’re in great hands. As for the seniors, just as they used to look up to the banners in the gym, future classes will be staring at this year hoping to achieve the same success. But at the end of the day, Ford’s ‘sisterhood’ will always remain strong. “I love these girls so much,” Karas said. Call Staff Writer Jonathan Szczepaniak at (586) 498-1090.

GOVERNMENT

BRIEF

Macomb County scores big with state budget

MACOMB COUNTY — As the state of Michigan passed a $81.7 billion budget on June 28, Macomb County received a significant amount of funding for projects around the county. Macomb County’s government received $40 million to fund a renovation project at the Macomb County Jail. The $230 million project aims to rework the jail’s intake and health systems to address mental health and substance abuse issues among inmates. “The central intake and assessment facility is a critical component of keeping our community safe,” Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said in a statement. “We are committed to upholding our constitutional responsibility to care for those that are in our custody. This new facility will provide us with

the necessary space to implement vital programs and services that can make a real difference.” A $13 million allocation was included for upgrades to Selfridge Air National Guard Base for runway extension to prepare the base for a fighter mission in the future. “We can now begin the difficult but essential process of refurbishment and expansion that will allow for a new fighter mission to be assigned here into 2027 and beyond,” state Rep. Alicia St. Germaine, of Harrison Township, said in a statement. Lake St. Clair Metropark received $5 million to renovate the park’s north marina to build a new seawall, a new walkway, update and raise utilities, replace piers with floating docks and make ADAaccessible improvements. — DEAN VAGLIA

Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2009, as its membership continued to branch out throughout Macomb County. The group later tended to drop the “and Industry” from its name. Ziarko said the latest name change is the result of a “deep dive” that the chamber’s team and board of directors took around six months ago. Their focus, she said, was what the organization would be for the next generation. Ziarko said the chamber voted at the end of May “with lots of deliberation” to change its name. She said the decision came as the organization focused on being relevant. “Our board and our team spent the last six months on what our organization would look like for the next generation of business owners,” Ziarko said. “We feel like we need to evolve. Our name needed to … as well.” Ziarko said Connect Macomb’s mission will focus on “building community and growing business.” She explained that while the chamber had traditionally been about helping businesses network with other businesses, Connect Macomb’s mission will go beyond that — remaining a chamber while allowing it to “be so much more.” “Our goal is that we would connect businesses to each other and connect businesses to the community, and our community members to our businesses in the area,” she said. Ziarko said around 70% of the group’s 1,300-plus members are based outside the city of Sterling Heights, and she added that Connect Macomb hopes to do more community events in other Macomb County communities. Despite the name change, Connect Macomb’s offices will remain in Sterling Heights, along Hall Road, Ziarko said. The

group plans to continue its ties with Sterling Heights through the Patios ‘n’ Pints beer patio at the Upton House during summertime Dodge Park Thursdays. In addition, Connect Macomb plans to continue partnerships with the Sterlingfest Art and Music Fair, as well as the Sterling Edge business awards and the city’s Healthy Living Expo. “Sterling Heights is where we’re based. It’s our home,” she said. “We have no plans to go anywhere. We’re always still going to be a chamber at our core, and this allows us to be more.” Ziarko said Connect Macomb conversed with several City Council members about the name change, and she said Mayor Michael Taylor was supportive. She added that Connect Macomb will continue to collaborate with the city in the future. “We’re still great partners,” Ziarko said. In a text message, Taylor said he understood why Connect Macomb changed its name, adding that “I can’t fault them.” “It was the right decision for the chamber,” he said. “Ultimately, I wish the name stayed the same, but I will always support organizations that support Sterling Heights businesses.” Before taking her current job, Sterling Heights Community Relations Director Melanie Davis had been previously the president and CEO for the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce. When asked for comment, Davis instead let Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool comment about Connect Macomb’s name change. “We understand that economic development strategies should not be confined to municipal borders,” Vanderpool said in an email. “Whether it was the initiative to Save the Chrysler Sterling Heights Assembly Plant ten years ago, creating the VELOCITY business incubator/accelerator, redeveloping Lakeside Mall or ensuring small businesses have the tools to flourish, the city of Sterling

CRIME

WATCH Woman steals trimmers, plants from Home Depot

Police were called to the Home Depot at 37000 Van Dyke Ave. June 10 after staff detained a woman for retail fraud. The woman allegedly put a five-pack of Ryobi trimmers in her purse, then put several plants in her cart, then went into the garden center to remove the trimmers from the packaging before putting the merchandise back in her purse. She then allegedly left the business without paying for the merchandise, collectively worth $202.76. Police searched the woman’s purse and reportedly found white pills inside. They were later deemed to be narcotics. Police arrested the woman for first-degree retail fraud and possession of synthetic narcotics.

Vehicles do burnouts in Lakeside parking lot

Police went to the Lakeside Mall parking lot, 14600 Lakeside Circle, the night of June 18 upon hearing that the drivers of 1520 vehicles were loitering and doing burnouts between the former Lord & Taylor store and JCPenney, while the mall was closed. Police then said the vehicles left.

Nude man begging for food taken to hospital

Police went to the 8300 block of Riverland Drive the night of June 17 after hearing that a man who was spotted nude and begging for food was perhaps living in a vacant apartment. Police checked out the apartment, which had no electricity, running water or food. Police reportedly took the man into custody and took him to the hospital after interviewing him and determining that he couldn’t care for himself.

Man allegedly changes clothes by drugstore

upon hearing that two men were being unruly. Police approached them while they were in a vehicle, and heard that the men had entered the store to pick up two phones they had purchased online. However, a worker reportedly found their account and said it was labeled as “fraud” and frozen. She reportedly said she didn’t freeze the account, but still couldn’t hand over any phones. One of the men reportedly said he didn’t know why his account had a fraud alert, and police told him to contact the store’s corporate offices.

Police attempt to assuage phone dispute

Anyone who has more information about any of these incidents is encouraged to contact the Sterling Heights Police Department by calling (586) 446-2800. — Eric Czarnik

Police went to a drugstore in the 39000 block of Van Dyke Avenue June 11 upon hearing that a man in his late 40s or early 50s had changed clothes in front of the business, hung the garments on propane tanks and was “trashing” and “spitting all over” the parking lot. However, a worker later said the man was no longer there, and nobody actually saw him exposed. Police concluded that no crime could be proven and closed the case.

Catching Cancer Before It’s Too Late

Early Cancer Detection Made Possible: Michigan’s First MRI Total Body Screening Clinic Now Open in Southfield, Pioneering Symptom-Free Diagnosis. I’ll never forget the words of a patient who recently completed a total body cancer screening with me: ‘Doc, you saved my life!’ Despite having no symptoms, we discovered a tiny tumor lurking and growing inside of him. Without early detection, the mass could have silently grown into late-stage cancer, leading to excruciating treatments and a potentially dire outcome. Thanks to the power of early detection, cancer was discovered before it was too late. It’s moments like these that are precisely why total body screening saves lives. As a general rule, when someone presents to the doctor with a symptom related to cancer, they are usually at stage III or stage IV. Even with annual physicals, there are limitations. Most screening tests that are covered by insurance companies only cover about 29% of cancers. The other 71% of cancers occur in areas where doctors are unable to screen, and insurance companies will not pay for screening. This is where Bionicc Body Screening in Southfield can save lives. I am Dr. Warren Ringold, and last month marked the fifth anniversary of the day my life changed forever. Five years ago, I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in my chest and

abdomen. The most alarming part is that I had no symptoms before this diagnosis. This is the great dilemma of cancer: the need for early detection. Early diagnosis is key to successful treatment, and cancer needs to be detected when it is most treatable. My personal stage IV cancer journey has been long and rugged. My tumor eventually was recurrent in my brain after an initial seven months of chemotherapy. I have been extraordinarily lucky. After being told that I would live only two months without treatment on my brain, I was fortunate enough to become patient number one in a new drug study and I have been in remission 5 to 8 times longer than expected. During that time, instead of ending up with the indignation of dying, from a brain tumor in front of my family with seizures and eventual blindness, I have been able to see twins, born as grandchildren, ball games, swim meets, graduations, while watching my grandchildren and children achieve. Most importantly, I’ve gotten to hold my wife, Nancy, in my arms for more than 1500 more nights of my life. I get to hug my children and kiss my 13 grandchildren. They don’t have to look at me with tears in their eyes, because

Dr. Warren Ringold, M.D. they see Papa deteriorating. What a gift that has been. But very few patients are as fortunate as I have been, which is why I founded Bionicc Body Screening. At Bionicc Body Screening, we can screen for cancer from the top of the head through the genitals, detecting cancers as small as the size of a pencil eraser. We use highly advanced and sophisticated MRI screening, which can find small cancers in areas where doctors cannot order testing that will be covered by insurance. The irony is that these cancers start out very small, and they are very treatable at this stage. They are usually stage one and can be seen in

every organ of the body, including the dreaded pancreas. While screening for cancer, we can also find many other things that need to be treated or watched, such as brain, abdominal, chest, and groin aneurysms. If detected at this stage, treatment for stage one cancer is usually simple resection of a tumor. Unfortunately, if you are stage III or IV like most people, it results in vigorous and difficult treatment with much poorer outcomes. It is unfortunate that some patients resist screening due to fear. Despite their desire to take the test, they unnecessarily delay it out of fear of receiving potentially distressing news about their health. Giving in to fear can only make matters worse and potentially allow undetected health problems to spiral out of control. Don’t put off your screening any longer. Ask yourself, when is a better time to take action than right now? Don’t wait another 6 months or even another day. Prioritize your health and get screened today. The only regret patients have is that they waited. Don’t wait. Get a total body cancer screening today. Call 1-833-BIONICC (1-833-246-6422) today, or learn more now by visiting www.BioniccBodyScreening.com.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police went to Kohl’s, 44200 Schoenherr Road, June 9 upon hearing that suspected shoplifting was in progress. A repeat offender was reported to be putting items such as kids Nike clothing in a cart. The suspect was described as tall and in his 50s or 60s. He reportedly had a salt-and-pepper beard and four missing front teeth. He was reportedly accompanied by a woman wearing a bandana and a tie-dyed shirt. Police waited for the individuals to leave the store and reportedly saw the woman leave from the north entrance and get inside the red Ford Taurus she had arrived in. Then the man reportedly came out of the store with a full shopping court, headed to the Taurus and started unloading merchandise into it. Police contacted the man, but he allegedly tried to run away. Police said they pursued him and eventually found him hiding under a parked vehicle. Although police ordered him not to run away, he allegedly did so again. When police reportedly caught up to him, they demanded he stop, but he allegedly said “no” and ran westward, crossing Schoenherr Road. Police said they finally arrested him for first-degree retail fraud after he crossed the street. Police said the suspect stole 41 items of merchandise worth a total of $1,458. Police also investigated the Taurus and said that, besides the one woman, there were two more female individuals in the car who never went inside the Kohl’s. Police said they released the three females.

Juveniles argue, fight in Target parking lot

STERLING HEIGHTS — A group of male juveniles were reportedly witnessed arguing, yelling and brawling in the parking lot of Target, 2310 Metropolitan Parkway, the night of June 9. The fight eventually broke up, but the juveniles reportedly continued to yell at one another before dispersing. Police said they talked to some of the juveniles, who said the dispute was over “girl troubles.”

They reportedly denied that any assault happened, didn’t want help from police, and said they planned to return home. Police took no further action.

Retail fraud reported

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 3:18 p.m. on June 19, a report was made of a retail fraud that occurred on the same day at 1:30 p.m. in the 23000 block of Greater Mack Avenue. According to the report, an officer received a police run for an earlier retail fraud. Upon arrival at the stated location, the officer was met by a 19-year-old man who said an unknown woman walked out of the store at approximately 1:30 p.m. with an EGO Power Generator. The man stated the store was busy and he was mixing paint some time before 1:30 p.m. The woman entered the store, selected an EGO generator, placed it in her cart, and continued to the front of the store. There she removed it from the cart and exited the store, passing all points of purchase and making no attempt to pay for the generator. The man stated the theft was captured on the video security system. He was advised to keep the video and place it on a thumb drive.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 9:43 a.m. on June 17, a report was made of a breaking and entering that occurred between June 15 and June 16 in the 20000 block of Ardmore Park Drive. According to the report, an officer and an evidence technician were dispatched to the stated location where they spoke to a 56-year-old man. He said on June 16, he noticed things moved around in his unattached garage. The television on the shelf was pulled out, liquor bottles on the bar were moved and his son’s tools were missing. The 56-year-old man was going to a graduation party, so he didn’t immediately call the police. The tools were last seen around 5 p.m. on June 15 and are valued between $400 and $500. The garage door was closed when he noticed the items were missing. The garage opens with a remote or code. There were no signs of forced entry, and the technician dusted the stated touched items and found four prints.

Man found guilty of criminal sexual conduct with stepchild

ROSEVILLE — A 37-year-old Detroit man was found guilty in mid-June in Macomb County Circuit Court of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Following a four-day jury trial that ended June 16, Dewon Henderson was found guilty of the two

counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13, defendant over 17. In December 2021, Henderson sexually assaulted his stepchild in a Roseville hotel, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release. Henderson is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 2 in front of Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Kathryn Viviano. “This guilty verdict marks a significant triumph for justice and a resounding message to sexual assault survivors that their voices will be heard,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a prepared statement. “It is our duty to fight for justice, to protect the vulnerable, and to hold perpetrators accountable for their reprehensible actions. This verdict is a step forward in creating a safer society, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice for all survivors.” Joshua Jones, Henderson’s attorney, declined to comment.

Suspected drunken driver drinks mouthwash after crash

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 6:25 p.m. June 11, officers were dispatched to a crash at 24 Mile and Mound roads. Upon talking to the driver who was at fault in the crash, the officer could smell the odor of alcohol on his person. The officer also noticed a short time later that the driver put mouthwash in his mouth. The officer then placed the driver through field sobriety tests. After completing the field sobriety tests, the driver was offered a preliminary breath test. The driver would not take the PBT, the police report states. He was then arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated. He was transported to the Police Department, where a search warrant was completed to draw blood from the driver to determine his blood alcohol content. He was then booked and processed and placed into a holding cell.

Customer attempts to use counterfeit money

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to a convenience store in the 15000 block of 22 Mile Road, near Hayes Road, for a counterfeiting report at 8:15 p.m. June 10. An employee stated that someone had tried to pay using a counterfeit $20 bill. When the employee told the suspect that the bill was counterfeit, the suspect left the store. The clerk then went outside to take a photo of the suspect’s license plate, at which point the suspect slapped the cellphone out of the clerk’s hand. The suspect then fled in his vehicle. The detective bureau was investigating the incident.

Masked suspect brandishes gun

GROSSE POINTE PARK — Police are looking for an unknown male suspect who reportedly pointed a gun at a witness who saw the suspect enter a vehicle belonging to a person who was inside a bar in the 15000 block of Charlevoix Avenue at around 4:20 a.m. June 18. According to a report, a bar patron approached the suspect after seeing the suspect go into the vehicle, and the suspect pointed a gun at the patron. The suspect is said to have then run to a dark-colored SUV waiting nearby. Police said the SUV turned out to be a Hyundai that had been stolen in Detroit. They attempted to pull over the suspect’s vehicle, but it fled the scene.

Police respond to alleged threat

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Police were called to the Shell gas station at Mack Avenue and Moross Road at around 1:20 p.m. June 15 after a man reportedly threatened another man with a gun. The victim, a 24-year-old man from Shelby Township, told police that the suspect — a 41-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms man — had walked around the victim’s vehicle, told the victim, “I’ve got something for you,” and gestured toward his hip as if to indicate he had a gun. The victim’s statements were backed up by video of the incident he had recorded on his phone. The victim could also be heard telling the suspect to get away from him. Police, who handcuffed the suspect, searched the suspect and found no gun on him or in his vehicle, but did locate a large folding knife in his pocket attached to his keys and found that he had an invalid license plate. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded. In addition, police issued the suspect a citation for disorderly person “for causing a large disturbance in relation to him making an overt threat that caused fear in (the victim) and citizens in the area,” a police report reads. The suspect told police he hadn’t threatened the victim and that he was warning him that he could get pulled over in Grosse Pointe for having tinted windows.

Banned hospital patient returns

GROSSE POINTE CITY — A 50-year-old Detroit man was issued a trespassing ticket after police said he went to Corewell Health, Beaumont Grosse Pointe, on June 22, despite the fact that he had previously been banned from the hospital. However, a police report states that the suspect was accidentally scheduled for surgery at the hospital. Police were called to the hospital after the suspect refused to leave. He departed from the property after he was given the trespassing ticket, police said.
