EASTPOINTE/ROSEVILLE — Students at Forest Park Elementary School in the Eastpointe Community Schools district welcomed a special guest who wished them well on their first day of school Aug. 28. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited a few classrooms; talked with students, staff and parents; and even helped make the dismissal announcement. The district’s first day of the 20232024 school year was a half-day. School was closed Sept. 1 and 4 for the Labor Day weekend, and at press time was to return Sept. 5. Enrollment numbers were not yet available.
“It’s really hard to get an accurate count of enrollment right now, because we are still registering new students and have not received all of the transfer requests from those students who have left the district,” Caitlyn Kienitz, the district’s communications and marketing coordinator, said via email. “We’ll have a better idea as we approach fall count in October.” On the financial side, according to Robert Carlesso, the district’s director of business and operations, school officials anticipate $9,608 in per-pupil funding for the new school year, which means the district will receive that amount per student. That is an increase of $458 from $9,150 for the 2022-2023 school year.

‘WE’RE TEAMMATES BACK THEN AND WE’RE TEAMMATES TODAY’ 1984 Tigers reunite with familiar foe for Kirk Gibson Foundation events BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com
ROYAL OAK — “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” The quote was once popularized in the film and book “Moneyball,” but it was in living color on Aug. 20 at Bowlero Lanes in Royal Oak. The Kirk Gibson Foundation hosted its first “Strike Out Parkinson’s” event to commemorate the 1984 Detroit Tigers and their journey to a World Series victory over the San Diego Padres. As legendary Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell and right-hander Dave Rozema answered questions alongside Gibson, a familiar foe was in attendance to make sure that the Padres were represented. “I don’t even know what I’m doing here,” Rich “Goose” Gossage said. “I don’t like the guy, but there it is. I don’t know what else to say.” See GIBSON on page 11A

Coffee hour includes updates from state Rep. Edwards BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com
State Rep. Kimberly Edwards, D-Eastpointe, was the guest speaker at the Aug. 24 Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce coffee hour at Eastpointe City Hall.
EASTPOINTE — The Aug. 24 Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce coffee hour gave State Rep. Kimberly Edwards, D-Eastpointe, the opportunity to share news from the state level. Edwards was the guest speaker during the one-hour event. Because of inclement weather, the coffee hour was moved from the outdoor Eastpointe Community Garden to Eastpointe City Hall. Edwards, who has lived in Eastpointe for eight years, represents the 12th District, which includes Roseville, Eastpointe and the east side of Detroit. She began her first two-year term in January. During her presentation, the elected official touched upon several issues, including unity. “As your representative, I plan to continue delivering for our people and working to promote strengthening in our community,” she said. “It is the people and our local businesses that provide so much more for this community.” She mentioned that her father was in the U.S. Army. “We know some branches of the military work together, but they also jokingly don’t work together. When I was child, he was stationed over in Germany,” Edwards said. “While he was stationed there, they’d often have to reach out to the Marines for support and they would work together to solve the issue together. They’d get it together, and they made sure it happened. “That’s why I decided to pick this topic, because I feel like Eastpointe, Roseville and the other communities that I serve are continuing to work together and unifying and strengthening our See EDWARDS on page 10A

Kienitz provided tips for parents whose children might be anxious about coming back to school. “We always encourage them to make a connection with their child’s teacher, principal, or another staff member in the building and always feel free to ask questions,” she said. “In addition to our teachers, principals, and front office staff, we have social workers, counselors, paraprofessionals, coaches, and more in the buildings to support our students and families. “We want to hear from parents and students as soon as any concerns arise, whether academic or social-emotional, so we can help put the needed support in place to help every child succeed,” Kienitz continued. “Our buildings will all have curriculum nights in September where parents and guardians can come in to meet teachers and staff. We are so excited to have our students back in school, and we want to provide them with the support they need to make it their most successful year yet.” There will be some new faces at the secondary level. The Eastpointe High School principal is Todd Yarch. In addition, Morgan Reece was promoted from the dean of students to principal at Eastpointe Middle School, and Marquis Dorsey joined Reece as the new EMS dean of students. Through a state grant and a partnership with the city of Eastpointe, the district will have new school resource officer Detective Marcel Prude on-site. While he will be based at EHS, he will work all around the district. During summer vacation, several staff members attended professional learning sessions.
This school year, there will be more opportunities for Eastpointe Community Schools students interested in athletics, as school officials either added or reinstated several sports teams for the fall, including high school boys soccer, middle school football, sideline cheer and middle/high school cross country. All district students will again receive free breakfast and lunch through the community eligibility provision, which was established several years ago in the district.

Roseville Community Schools
At press time, the new school year was to begin Sept. 6. The district will receive $9,608 in per-pupil funding and predicts an enrollment of 4,380 students. Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski reminded parents that the district is “here to help” students be successful should they feel anxious or have difficulties socially and academically. “Have your child talk with teachers and other support staff when they feel they are struggling,” he said. At press time, staff were scheduled to undergo development training on Aug. 31 and Sept. 5 with another one scheduled for Nov. 7. Topics were to include the socialemotional well-being of staff and students, best practices in instruction, classroom management techniques, and how to best utilize resource materials for each grade level and subject area. According to Assistant Superintendent Dave Rice, all school districts in Michigan must provide up to five days of professional development for the teaching staff. Therefore, two more professional development dates will be added later in the school year. The district made some administrative
changes. Joseph Trobaugh is the new principal at Fountain Elementary School, and Alexandra Ward is the new dean of students at Eastland Middle School. Brenda Baker has moved over to Dort Elementary School to become principal, Patton Elementary School’s new principal is Brandon Komarowski and Joe Jelsone is now Roseville Middle School assistant principal. This year, Roseville Middle School and Eastland Middle School students will have four new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) course offerings. The new courses include Project STEAM, Introduction to Robotics, Remotely Operated Vehicles and Media Applications.
Roseville students will not receive any new technological devices this year. However, with initial purchases of student laptops and iPads in 2019 complete, school officials are starting work on the first refresh. During the fall, district officials are planning to collaborate with teachers and staff to evaluate potential new student laptops and iPads that are available by comparing their functionality, durability, warranty coverage and support. Breakfast and lunch are free for all Roseville students again this year, as is the case for all students in the state. Call Staff Writer Maria Allard at (586) 498-1045.

Either of us winning is a win for the city, and that’s the most important aspect of this race.”

Time for a bike ride
STERLING HEIGHTS — The Macomb County Board of Commissioners invites residents to its Drop-In Community Bike Ride from 9 a.m. until noon Sept. 16 at Clinton River Park North, located on Riverland Drive, east of Van Dyke Avenue. The event — hosted by Commissioner Don VanSyckel, of Sterling Heights — is designed to promote health, wellness and community engagement. A bike helmet is required. Participants can choose from a variety of planned routes suitable for riders of all levels. Three routes ranging from approximately 1 to 3 miles will showcase the park’s natural landscapes. The event is free. Bathrooms are located at the nature center. To preregister or for more information, visit bocmacomb.org.
MACOMB COUNTY — The Lake St. Clair Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area and the Macomb County Department of Roads will work with a contractor to perform phragmites treatment sprays along Macomb County roads starting after Labor Day. “This is an important public safety issue as road right of ways often provide conditions and environments for phragmites to grow,” Department of Roads Director Bryan Santo said in a statement. “The presence of the invasive species creates a visual impairment for drivers, reduces drainage, and damages pavement since it has the ability to grow through paved roads.” Funding for the spraying comes from the Department of Roads and the communities where sprays will take place. Sprays will occur in Clinton Township, Harrison Township, Ray Township, Shelby Township, Sterling Heights and Washington Township. The department sees the invasive species as a threat to both drivers and infrastructure. The plants grow 20 feet in height in ditches and shoulders.

lot goes into estate sales, and in addition to the planning and pricing, compassion and understanding are also important. Ashley Rodgers, the owner of Green Eyes Estate Sales who runs the business with her husband, Christopher Rodgers, listed a number of steps to get an estate sale ready. The first thing people can expect is a consultation with the estate sale company to gauge their needs. Then comes organizing and evaluating the items, staging and showcasing, announcing the estate sale, and, finally, hosting the sale. Ashley Rodgers described the first few hours of an estate sale as a “madhouse.” For organizational purposes, her company, as well as other companies, hand out numbers to the customers first in line and only allow a certain number of people in at a time. Chris Deneau, the owner of Clearview Estate Sales, said every estate sale they host is completely different. People can be out of town, in town, have multiple family members involved and host of other scenarios. His company takes 35% of the profits, and he said they usually can get set up in a couple of days in a standard household. “We have been running into less and less standard households in the last couple of years and more hoarding situations, it seems,” Deneau said. How long it takes also depends on the estate. They’ve done estate sales that take a couple of days and also ones that take two to three weeks, Deneau said. It takes a while, Rodgers said, to price the items in the estate. Her company uses professionals to appraise everything. “Our pricing is based on careful research, years of experience and knowledge of the Detroit metro area market,” Rodgers said in an email. “Pricing is also a practice of knowing what current trends in home decor and decorating are popular.” Both Rodgers and Deneau said it depends on the family when it comes to what
happens to the items that aren’t sold. “Our cleanout process includes selling items as a lot or bundle for deep discounts, donating leftover items to charity, utilizing refuse disposal services and sometimes even having free days,” Rodgers said in an email. Deneau said his company works with Grace Centers of Hope to donate items not sold. “There’s certain things that Grace Centers of Hope won’t take,” Deneau said. “So we really focus hard during the estate sale utilizing Facebook Marketplace, utilizing Craigslist, utilizing specialty groups to try and get rid of items that may not be donatable after the sale.” Both Rodgers and Deneau said there does need to be empathy and compassion when getting ready for an estate sale. Rodgers said an estate sale doesn’t necessarily happen because a loved one dies; it can be for any number of reasons. Deneau said he’s signed contracts with a 90-year-old going into assisted living and a 21-year-old who lost her parents. “You have a lot of people that can deal with the situation, but you have a lot of people that you really need to be kind to and you need to walk them through the process very slowly or else they won’t make it through the process,” Deneau said.
They also both said they have dealt with difficult customers who come to estate sales. Rodgers has security at their sales. “My company is run by myself and my husband, who is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL,” Rodgers said in the email. She said he “is in charge of security at every sale, and our dedicated staff members all work together to keep everyone safe and shopping happily.” People looking to host estate sales should be diligent about looking at reviews for a company, and they have to be careful of who they hire.
“But you need to be very diligent about your Google and your Yelp reviews,” Deneau said. “Because you can very, very easily hire a company that can take advantage of you.” To get an estate sale started, Deneau said, people should take out anything they want to keep and then call an estate sale company. “You really don’t have to lift another finger other than taking the stuff out that you want,” Deneau said. Community Choice Credit Union Lighten the squeeze on your wallet with these household finance tips If high interest-rates and inflation are affecting your household budget, you are not alone. While rising interest-rates have moderated some inflation pressures, chances are you are feeling some pain in your pocketbook. After all, the full-fledged impact of two years of inflation is hitting most consumers hard now, reducing their savings, eliminating large percentages of their disposable income and making it more difficult to pay off debt. This is having an impact on your disposable income. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis confirms that the seasonally adjusted annual rate of personal saving dipped to 4.6 percent in February. That’s well below the average annual rate of more than 8 percent, which has been tracked since 1959. In June 2022, the rate had dipped to 2.7 percent, a 15-year low. Whether wallet pressure is an ongoing concern, or you’re simply looking to increase cash flow and save money, the good news is that high interest rates do not need to be a detriment
to meeting your goals. Increasing cash flow can help relieve that wallet pressure. So how can you increase cash flow during times of rising prices?

community,” Edwards said. “Real change happens when voices are heard and there is free and open dialogue. As a legislator with my colleagues, we’re also continuing to work with unity in mind as well. This term we expanded Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, that includes anti-discrimination protection for sexual orientation and sexual identity. That is huge for anyone who is (a member) of the LGBTQ.” During her speech, the elected official said the state budget was “a critical investment in redeveloping neighborhoods and supporting small businesses with over $100 million in new community revitalization grants.” Edwards told attendees to contact her office regarding grants available for small businesses. “Oftentimes we’re looking for individuals to forward them to,” she said. “Email us; that way we have someone we can send those grants to.” Edwards’ office phone number in Lansing at (517) 373-0852. Her email address is kimberlyedwards@house.mi.gov. She also told the audience that her of-
fice holds monthly meetings on mental health. “We focus on different aspects each month. One month we did men’s mental health and we focused on ‘What’s in your wallet?’” Edwards said. “Men usually carry credit cards and financial burdens, their stressors or a loved one that has passed that may have caused trauma.” Edwards plans to hold more mental health conversation groups this fall. At the time of the coffee hour, no dates had yet been scheduled, but check her website. “Please feel free to reach out to my office with concerns or ideas you have,” she said. The coffee hour gave Eastpointe resident Timothy Kniaz the opportunity to highlight the Eastpointe Community Garden, which is located on Nine Mile Road, east of Gratiot Avenue. “It’s across from the Fire Department. It’s a really awesome space. We’re doing tons of work to get it together. We have a group every Saturday that comes and volunteers,” he said. “You’re more than welcome to come there. You don’t have to do anything. You can hang out. You can talk. Every Saturday we put out a vast amount of produce for anybody to take.” Also at the meeting, Macomb County
Clerk/Register of Deeds Anthony Forlini addressed the crowd regarding the Clerk’s Office Fraud Guard Alerts program. The program is designed to help homeowners avoid being victims of property fraud. Property owners can register their names, and when a Macomb County real estate document is recorded with their name on it, they will be notified via email. Visit macombgov.org/clerk for more information.

Kirk Gibson addresses the crowd as the Kirk Gibson Foundation hosts its seventh annual Kirk Gibson Golf Classic Aug. 21 at Wyndgate Country Club in Rochester Hills.
The Hall of Famer and flame-throwing right hander usually got the better of Gibson, as Gibson went 1-for-13 with eight strikeouts throughout his career against Gossage in the regular season, but it was Gibson’s home run off Gossage in Game 5 of the 1984 World Series that was the topic of conversation throughout the night. That’s the romanticism and camaraderie of baseball — how one pitch, one swing and one home run could have such a profound impact that the pair meeting up again nearly 40 years later could draw so much attention. “The game is over and we’re done, but to have this and start this, it gives him something else to focus on than his health conditions and his health issues that he’s had with Parkinson’s,” Gossage said. “It’s great to be here with him and for him, and to see such a great turnout. It’s awesome.” As attendees bowled to start the night and enjoyed food and conversation, the attention shifted to the video board as the journey to the 1984 World Series was displayed, showing a buildup of draft picks See GIBSON on page 13A

and even the infamous Rozema karate kick against the Minnesota Twins in 1982 during a bench-clearing brawl, which drew laughter from the crowd. Afterward, the ’84 World Series panel took the stage as Gossage, Gibson, Trammell and Rozema discussed the famous at-bat between Gossage and Gibson, the Tigers clubhouse in 1984 and everything in between. “Obviously, we get to reminisce and we get to talk about the old times, and that never gets old, but this is life and death stuff here and to raise funds and to make people more aware of Parkinson’s, or what Gibby calls ‘Parky,’” Trammell said. “They broke the mold with Kirk Gibson, and I mean that in a complimentary fashion. He’s a heck of a man and a good friend.” To follow up the bowling event, the Kirk Gibson Foundation hosted its seventh annual Kirk Gibson Golf Classic Aug. 21 at Wyndgate Country Club in Rochester Hills to raise money to fight Parkinson’s, and the ’84 Tigers brought in some reinforcements to get the job done. As Gossage, Trammell and Rozema shared laughs near their respective golf carts before the outing, legendary Tigers catcher

Lucido stated in a press release. Mancini was arraigned by Judge Joseph Boedeker, who set bond at $250,000 cash or surety with no 10%. If someone posts Mancini’s bond, Mancini is to have no possession of weapons, no contact with the victim or witnesses, and he must have a mental health evaluation before being released. A probable cause conference was sched-
Lance Parrish joined in on the reunion to support his teammate. “This is a big deal to him, and it’s a big deal to anyone who has somebody that suffers from Parkinson’s or has a family member,” Parrish said. “It’s all in an effort, just like every charity event, to try to find a cure, and we’re hoping the little bit that we can all do to help in that regard is leading towards that direction.” While finding a cure is definitely at the top of the list, there was much conversation surrounding the Kirk Gibson Foundation’s center for Parkinson’s that is currently in the development stages. Putting heavy emphasis on achieving major progress in 2023, the Kirk Gibson Foundation’s managing director, Steve Annear, said the foundation is hoping to open the doors of the center to the Parkinson’s community within the next two years. “It’s been amazing,” Annear said. “I think so far this year we’ve exceeded our own expectations of what we could do. The result of that means we’ll be able to more directly impact people that are living with Parkinson’s through the programs that we support and opening up our own center, which will be the Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s, where people will be able to come and get all these exercises and activity-based programs for free, so that’s kind of the centerpiece of
what we’re doing here and we’re really excited about it.” The center will be home to a multitude of activity-based programs that the Kirk Gibson Foundation funds, including yoga, tai chi, bicycling, spin classes, breathing exercises, strength and weight training classes, dance classes, and many more. The center also will provide a support program to family members of people fighting Parkinson’s to help them cope and assist their loved ones. Don’t think of it in the context of a medical center, but rather as a sanctuary for people fighting Parkinson’s to walk in and feel like they’re at home. “We want it to feel like a community where people with Parkinson’s walk through the doors and feel fantastic about being there and feel normal that they’re there, and the
uled for Wednesday, Sept. 6, and a preliminary exam was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13. Both will be in front of 39th District Court Judge Alyia Hakim. At press time, Mancini did not have an attorney listed. He requested a courtappointed attorney. According to court records, in 2017, Mancini appeared in Roseville’s district court for fighting on school property and was fined $190. Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 291-7637.

kind of relationships you build and the camaraderie and friendships you build in that center are very, very important to people’s mental health,” Annear said. With one more event this year on the schedule with the 2023 Detroit Free Press Marathon, the foundation’s attention and efforts are still locked onto this year. Regardless, it’s difficult to ignore the prominence of the 2024 year being the 40th anniversary of the 1984 World Series, and the foundation’s chief operating officer, Michelle Newman, said the foundation expects to honor that anniversary with something special in 2024, “Next year is the 40th anniversary of the ’84 home run, so we’d like to plan something to commemorate that,” Newman said. the pastor since July, and currently there are about 100 active members. “We’re all committed to the service of the Lord,” said Maxvill, of St. Clair Shores. “This is the way that we come to celebrate God every Sunday and whatever other ways we do within this community. If you’re not here, you’re missed.” The original Roseville Trinity United Methodist Church was organized in 1923. During the early days, services were held in William Apps’ Hardware Store at 11 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. A barrel was used for a pulpit. In 1925, the first church building was built at 11 Mile Road and Fernwood Street in Roseville. It was used briefly before a fire destroyed it. Another church was eventually built in the same area. “Devoted members started planning for another building and when the basement was completed met there for many years,” the church’s “Our Church Then and How” booklet states. “In 1949, the sanctuary was completed and consecrated on March 6 of that year.” The church members, however, were forced to move because the state bought the property to make way for Interstate 696. That’s when the church moved to its current location at 18303 Common Road. Members brought the pews from the old church building, and the first service was held June 6, 1971. “The Bible is preached and important in the message on Sunday morning,” said member Karen Arendall, of Fraser. “But then there’s the warmth of the congregation, too. People-to-people contact is very important.” Ken Bowen, Rilett Burns and Steve Finley all began attending Roseville Trinity United Methodist Church 69 years ago with their parents.

Members of one of the church’s earliest congregations gather for service. “When the church was originally built, they had service in the basement,” said Burns, of Clinton Township. “My grandparents started coming in 1929. My mother was 10 years old. Everyone is welcome every Sunday. We greet everybody. People are always nice.” “Everyone’s like a family to me. I grew up in the church and knew everybody here,”
said Bowen, of Roseville. “I just felt very comfortable here.” The church has provided outreach in the past. According to Finley, members have opened the church for the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team. With MCREST, churches open up at night and bring in homeless individuals for a meal and a place to sleep. The individuals then leave
in the morning and return in the evening. The program moves to different churches each week. Roseville Trinity participated for many years. “We housed 29 men,” Finley said. “It took everyone working together in order to get it done. It was humbling.” Finley remembers there was one church member who came to the church during the

She got several people into jobs and apartments.” The church has not been able to participate in MCREST in the last few years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It hasn’t been easy the last few years because of attrition. Not everybody kept going. When Steve and I grew up, there were a bunch of us that were all the same age,” Burns said. “Now there’s only two or three of us that still go to this church.” “COVID, as it did with many churches, hit us hard. That’s when we started having Facebook services, and we have continued that,” Maxvill said. “We do have that presence every Sunday, and we have senior members who aren’t able to come to church, but they worship on Facebook. I have friends in North Carolina that watch every week. We also have somebody from Liberia that watches every week.” Roseville Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 18303 Common Road, at the corner of Common Road and
