July was dominated by the once in a lifetime event that was the Total Solar Eclipse. As a spectacle for those based in Chengdu the occasion was slightly 'clouded' by the overhead conditions, but nonetheless it was a truly spectacular (if slightly eerie) sight to see the city submerged in darkness during daylight hours. Hoping to see a bit more (or more accurately less) of the sun, the good folks at the bookworm organised a bus to go up to nearby Luodai's mini great wall (pictures see page 09). Elsewhere in Chengdu, interested bystanders flocked to Tianfu Square to see if the power of the people could clear a path for the sun to peek through the clouds.

NEWS National: Shanghai encourages aging population to have 2nd baby Eligible couples in Shanghai are now being encouraged to have a second child, as authorities make an effort to tackle the burden of an aging population. Family planning officials and volunteers will make home visits and slip leaflets under doorways to encourage couples to have a second child, but only if both grew up as only children.

Death penalty for man who killed 4 in drink-driving accident A court in Chengdu has sentenced a man to death for a drunken driving accident that killed four people, in what Chinese state media are describing as a first for the country. Sun Weiming, 30, was found guilty of endangering public safety and sentenced to death, several state-run newspapers reported. Sun was drunk and speeding in Chengdu last December when he struck four other cars, killing four

“We advocate eligible couples to have two children because it can help reduce the proportion of the aging people and alleviate a workforce shortage in the future," said Xie Lingli, director of the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission. Shanghai, the country's most populous city, has more than 3 million registered residents aged 60 and above, nearly 22 percent of its population. By 2020, the proportion is expected to rise to about 34 percent.

Several media outlets, including the Tianfu Morning Post and the Sichuan News Network, said the case marked the first time in China that a person has been given the death penalty for endangering public safety by driving drunk, although this claim could not be officially confirmed. Shaq's basketballs spark row The fate of four signed basketballs given by NBA great Shaquille O'Neal to Sichuan earthquake survivors sparked an Internet storm in China last month. The 15-times All Star doled out the balls to four children when he was visiting a school in Mianyang, the city worst affected by the earthquake which killed more than 80,000 people last year. The boys were devastated when the balls were subsequently confiscated by school staff, and China's increasingly assertive internet community rallied to their cause. More than 90 percent of the 3,200 respondents to a Xinhua.net online poll felt the school had no right to take the gifts and comments on forums cast doubt upon official denials that they would be used for "private purposes," China Daily reported. O'Neal, who is hugely popular in basketball-mad China, later dispatched replacement balls to the students. "I never thought it would be like this. I can imagine how disappointed the boys must be," O'Neal told the paper.

Welcome to Chengdu in pictures - a new section for CGrooves. The basic idea is that we give our resident snapper a theme for the month and see what he comes up with. We decided to go with a gentle start this month, and so have plumped for the theme of 'summertime in Chengdu'.

We hope you enjoy the pictures, and if you have an idea and/or pictures you feel would be suitable for this page then feel free to drop us an email on contact@cgrooves.net . Happy snapping!

Chengdu Grooves hit the road with Bike China With Chengdu's roads choked with traffic, taxis harder to come by than a legitimate copy of Harry Potter and safety concerns over buses, the common or garden bicycle seems a better way than ever to get around. Not only is it a good way to blow away some cobwebs, but whilst riding you can also come across many weird and wonderful sights that you might otherwise miss staring out of the taxi window. To that end, the good folks at Bike China were kind enough to take the Chengdu Grooves team out to some of the more unusual tourist attractions that Sichuan's capital has to offer, and get some exercise along the way!

Sofa so good The Price of Progress

Just to the south of Chengdu's 3 rd ring road you'll find a group of low-slung red brick buildings that house a collection of sofa factories. We popped in to have a chat with Mr. Li at the newly opened 'Golden Arrow' sofas, and upon entering a run down and generally unassuming-looking building found ourselves transported into a gleaming sofa showroom, with all manner of couches, easychairs and settees in a variety of different colours and shapes. The sofas are made in-house by local workers and are mostly intended for domestic consumption. Mr. Li explained that they use wood from the lumber yard close by who in turn source it from Sichuan and Yunan provinces.

Our guiding light Born in north eastern China's chilly Jilin province, Jason Gu came to Chengdu to study English at Sichuan Sports University, and it was while studying that he was introduced to Bike China founder Peter Snow Cao and began working for him in 2007. After graduating he continued to work for the company and now travels all over China, taking tourists and enthusiastic bikers alike around some of the most well-known (and some less popular but equally fascinating) areas of this immense country. In the future he's hoping to settle down and buy an apartment in Chengdu, which he now calls 'his second home'.

Just north of the Liuli flyover on Chengdu's 3 rd ring road, a formidable row of newly completed tower blocks sit glinting in the sun.

Burning money for a deceased relative or friend to ensure that their spirit can get by in the afterlife is a popular tradition in most Asian cultures. It's not really about the amount of money you burn but the symbolism behind it, and it's actually considered unlucky to burn real money. At the Zhu Guo Si cemetery there are stalls selling not just money, but pretty much everything you can think of to ensure a safe arrival in the afterlife. Apart from cash there are shirts, watches, mobile phones, servants and even a grand looking detached house available.

TRANSITIONING WITH CHILDREN INTO A NEW LOCATION By Richard Mast, B.Sc. Dip.Ed. M.Ed

Even if you and your family have moved locations within your home country or overseas, the issues related to transitioning still apply. Certainly age and experience helps but the emotional adjustments apply to everyone. If this is your first time away from home then you can expect there will be more adjustments to face than you may have initially thought. This article focuses upon the needs of a family, but the key components apply to us all.

Children tend to prefer the familiar and can find it hard to face the unknown and be uprooted, but with planning and making sure you address your children's needs and worries, you can make the move a success and set the foundation for a wonderful life abroad. Excitement and having an attitude of adventure is great, but a parent who is excited about living abroad may project his or her hopes and aspirations on the children and tend to overlook the child's concerns. Be careful that you don't gloss over these concerns.

Because parents feel guilty about having to uproot their children they may exhibit a tendency to over compensate. This can manifest itself in spending too much on clothes and toys, as well as allowing the children to behave in ways that they would not accept at home. DISCOVER CHENGDU

Wang Anting's Little Exhibition By Tom Herbert

Even as a young leaflet circulating the streets of South West England, Grooves was always an inquisitive publication and, despite the felicidal warnings about curiosity taught to us by old Grandma Grooves, remains so to this day. Therefore it should come as no surprise to regular readers that after receiving a tip-off from a friend about a man in Chengdu running a Chairman Mao m em ori al m us eum from hi s house, Grooves dashed over there as recklessly as a local taxi driver needing to get home quickly after too much green tea. Tucked away on a side-street a few blocks North West of Tianfu square you'll find Wang Anting's Little Exhibition. And little it certainly is, as the museum takes up the entirety of Mr. Wang's cluttered and dusty one-room house, with most of the 'exhibits' piled high on top of each other. Mr. Wang, 75, has been running his exhibition for over 20 years, although recently due to ill health he hasn't had too much time to devote to cleaning and organising his collection. He shuffles out on two walking sticks to greet us, his hearing aid crackling loudly and echoing every time he speaks. Despite his ailments he still seems full of beans and answers our questions in a broad Sichuan dialect. As a youngster in China in the early 50s Mr. Wang was desperate to join up with his friends and fight in the Korean War, but in his own words “I wasn't a good enough soldier – you need to be really good to fight for your country abroad you know!” Instead he was one of the first workers from the People's Republic of China to enter T1bet as a lumberjack. After returning to Chengdu he began his own personal homage to Mao Zedong, the then leader of the newly formed People's Republic of China, and now boasts an incredible 50,000 badges, posters, portraits and busts of his beloved Chairman displayed in his home and sustained by patrons

Now, sadly, it seems as though time and tide has caught up with Mr. Wang and his collection, both of which are looking a little ragged around the edges, and the curator is looking at handing the care of his collection to a new custodian. “I'd be happy to let someone else have the museum – for the right price!” he quips. “I don't want to just give my collection away to children, they have no idea what Chairman Mao represents, and would just throw my badges away. I need someone who can appreciate them and keep his memory alive”. After finally leaving Mr. Wang to his thoughts and his badges, one would imagine that most visitors probably go through a range of mixed emotions. What should one be feeling now? Fascination at having seen possibly one of the largest collections of contemporary Chinese historical items known to man? Guilt at having only handed over a voluntary donation to see it? Pity for the old custodian and his exhibits slowly decaying in decrepit surroundings? For this magazine at least, all of the above and more were true, but one thing is certain, if you feel the inclination to visit you won't leave Wang Anting's Little Exhibition unmoved.

I had always wanted to travel and I really wanted to go somewhere where I could take time to get to know people. Chengdu was so laid back and easy, it was like the Darwin of China” But his time here has come to and end and he now has to go back to work. He says he has made a “million” friends, and also found time to travel the world, a lot of it with his son Max.

Interview and text by Katherine Lea

We wish him well and hope he will return to Chengdu and China again in the near future.

Look up Richard Margetson on Google and you get 340 hits – most of which document his life as an Australian radio and TV interviewer of the famous, the highly regarded, the political and the controversial. Whilst most of us know Richard as the past editor of Grooves, the talented host of parties and functions, and man about town, Richard's career has been one immersed in Australian theatre, radio and television.

BACKGROUND ·Education: Matriculation and 30 years work experience ·Family: Single. 1 son, Max age 10 ·Residence: Chengdu is my 8 th hometown - soon to return to Darwin, Australia INSIGHTS

Richard's fame (albeit local and Australia wide) started in 1986 when he followed his calling for theatre in Adelaide. “At first I was studying a BA but I was flunking out as I was starting to get involved with theatre, clowning and other things like that. Adelaide was vibrant and happening and full of top end creative people. My parents understood and said that they would support me for a year. Within that year I got my first professional gig and the ball

One of the local families has allowed their old home to be used as a cultural museum so tourists can learn how people lived in these enclosed mountain communities for centuries. Local ladies will also show how they have woven material for generations. This is one tradition that is in danger of being forgotten. It is hoped that through the eco-tourism project, traditions such as these will continue to be passed down to younger generations. The local Tibetan culture in Jiuzhai Valley is unique. Their local Tibetan dialect is only spoken in this region and it is quite different from Lhasa, Gan Zi, Qing Hai or Gan Su Tibetan. The religion practiced here is Benbo Tibetan Buddhism. This religion was introduced to the Aba Prefecture in the 2nd century BC, was integrated with primitive local wizardry into the Benbo Sect and became dominant in the 6th Century. In the 7th century, Tibetan Buddhism was introduced to the region. Although through numerous conflicts Buddhism did become prevalent, the Benbo Sect has survived and developed, and is now recognised as one of the five sects of Tibetan Buddhism while maintaining its own unique features. The Benbo and Tibetan Buddhists worship and make sacrifices to natural Gods. Stupas, prayer wheels, chorten and prayer flags can be seen throughout the park, evidence of the local belief that the soul is inherent in all things, including mountains. Small prayer wheels are carried by hand and larger ones placed in streams and rivers and are rotated by the flowing water. One rotation of the prayer wheel equals 100 recitations of the contained religious scripture.

Globalisation and Green Hats ABOUT ME

Let's go back in time to the early '80s, and Deng Xiao Ping, leader of the Chinese Communist Party, veteran of the Long March and seen by many as the founding father of modern China was touring the United States. Part of the state visit saw Deng and his entourage pay a visit to east coast seat of learning Boston. After the business of the day was complete, Mr. Deng's diplomatic counterparts decided to take him to see that most American of institutions, a basketball game, at the team founded in tribute to the city's Irish community, the Boston Celtics. All was going well and the Chinese delegation seemed to be enjoying the action when things suddenly and unexpectedly took a turn for the worst.

As a token of friendship to

commemorate the occasion, a state official attempted to present the Chinese leader with one of the Celtics' trademark green hats, but instead of accepting it the usually unflappable Deng looked horrified and not only refused to accept the hat, but vigorously and repeatedly

pushed it away. Bemused, the hat-giver looked over at the rest of Deng's group, all of whom were looking as shocked as their illustrious leader. The reason for such an extreme reaction? Well, the phrase 'wearing a green hat' in Chinese mocks a man's masculinity, as it implies that his partner is cheating on him.

Scissors and knives symbolize the cutting of ties – not such a good move, especially when trying to forge a relationship with a new Chinese business partner

In one sense adapting to life in China isn't the enormous cultural leap that many who have yet to visit this vast and diverse nation imagine. Globalising influences like television, movies and the internet have narrowed cultural divides, and especially in larger, more

here that one might find in some parts of South America or the Middle East, and the Chinese themselves are, on the whole, a practical and flexible (if superstitious) race. This flexibility may well be part of the reason that most Chinese who move abroad adapt and integrate relatively well into whatever society they arrive in. However, with a country that was cut off from the rest of the world for the best part of the twentieth century there will inevitably be differences in attitudes and outlooks that come into play when people from two different societies meet, with the green hat incident serving as a high profile example of this. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that this particular issue has reared

Never wrap your gifts in white or black paper. Colours are important, red is lucky and used for celebrations, and white and black are bad as they associated with death When at a Chinese banquet, always try to leave a small amount of food left in your bowl when you are full. Failure to do so symbolizes that your host didn't serve you enough food – a grave insult in China's culture of hospitality

Sitting proudly in Beijing's National War museum, presented to the head of the People's Liberation Army by his counterpart in the Australian forces is a faded slouch or bush hat that makes up part of the antipodean country's military uniform – in green. It must have been a brave official who handed a green hat over to the head of the world's biggest army! There are countless other little cultural or linguistic faux-pas that an unwary and unprepared visitor can make in China, a selection of which can be found in the side bars, some of which are understandable, others slightly less so. However, as pointed out above, none of these represent a catastrophic or unforgivable error, as most Chinese understand that their cultural norms are different to most other societies, and don't generally take offense when these minor indiscretions are committed. On rare occasions can even be an amusing way to break the ice between strangers from different lands! Still, it's probably best to leave that Celtics hat back at home for now, just in case…
