Chiltern Gundog Society
Yearbook 2016-2017
Chair’s address: A quick look at the committee list it appears that the Chiltern Gundog Society has completely changed! On behalf of our members I thank the retiring committee officers; Mr. Nick Olly, Mr. David Friday, both supported the club for so many years, in a variety of roles, that it must have appeared to on lookers that they ‘were’ the club! Nick and David have left the Chiltern Gundog Society in a healthy and vibrant state! With over a thousand members we support both Spaniel and Retriever owners and are delighted to combine both the sections under one banner – a Working Gundog Club. The new committee will continue to support the club; hosting working tests, field trials and training sessions for all of us to enjoy and I urge you to use the events – please do come along to take part or offer to help – It means a lot to the volunteers that members get pleasure from these events and indeed spurs us on to do more for you! Our President, Lady Venetia Hugh-Smith, has also stepped down this year. As a founding member, Venetia has worked tirelessly for the club throughout its history - securing grounds, both for trials and working tests, judging various events and guiding the club through some tough times…I hope the club has not tired her out and on behalf of our members, I thank Venetia for all her support and hard work, and I hope that we will continue to see Venetia at our various events. Wishing all members an enjoyable season ahead. Mary-Jane Opie Chair.

The Inter Counties Team Event Thirteen teams competed for the Kelly Memorial Shield - each team consisted of three Open Retrievers that represented various clubs around England. As SEGS had won the event hosted by the Chiltern Gundog Soc in 2016, the Society hosted this year’s event, held on the Isenhurst Estate, by kind permission of Clive and Gilly Nickols. The judges for the day were Kevin Doughty, Diana Harrison, Helena Sully and Gilly Nickols. Mr. Andrew Wright with Overthwarts Berwick, Mr. Lee Hayman with Copperbirch Ross and Ms. M-J. Opie with Studebaker Bugatti represented the Chiltern Society. Each test involved the team sending the individual dogs for retrieves – long marks or blinds that required dogs to negotiate water, fences or natural ‘bunkers’. Isenhurst is a ground that can offer fantastic tests and is not for the faint hearted! In the morning each dog completed two marked retrieves and two blind retrieves. The Chiltern team completed all the tests, with a variety of style! – from full marks awarded to a low score. Poor Rolls belly flopped on his first water retrieve and from then on viewed any water retrieve with horror! After lunch, we were asked to sit through a drive, with clays being shot temptingly close – The change in the gunshot from .22 blanks to 20 gauge made the dogs come ‘alive’ – some dogs thinking the season had started early, our dogs stayed fast only to ‘lose it’ on the water retrieve after the drive had finished. But the Chiltern team appeared to save themselves for the last test. 6 seen retrieves in a walkup scenario, and were awarded the most points given to any team! Many thanks to Gilly and Clive Nickols, the SEGS committee all the helpers, fellow competitors and my team mates – we had a lovely day!
