INDUSTRIAL LANDCOSM is the transformation of light to medium industrial land use districts and the subsequent landscapes by reconciling the notion of industry and nature, and investigating the synergies that may arise from combining the two. The primary design focus is premised upon the reinterpretation of landscape and built form through activating underutilized spaces that are embedded throughout the Franklin and Meridian Industrial Parks.
INDUSTRIAL LANDCOSM
During the early 1950s, the area consisted of native grass lands with interspersed wetlands. Over time the area began transforming into a hub for industrial land uses. The goal on this project is to give vibrancy to the dwindling area while staying true to its industrial character. Possessing strong links to nature and recreation are seen as an important factor to invigorating the site. One of the main urban design moves appropriates a former rail corridor that runs throughout the site. Using the rail line as a spatial connector, re-adapting old warehouses into multi-functional building uses and incorporating landscape ecologies into the area has allowed the creation of an “Industrial Village where the character of the area is honored yet re-conceptualized to remain relevant in the postindustrial landscape.
