Drucker School Global Family Business Institute Serving Sustainable Businesses That Positively Impact Communities

VISION The institute is the flagship academic institute of the Drucker School. It seeks to attract students and family business members throughout the world with programs that address the issues and opportunities of family businesses, including managing the family name, succession planning, innovation, corporate responsibility, governance, finance, and sustainability.

MISSION We use Peter Drucker’s principles to develop leaders who run sustainable family businesses that can be passed on to future generations and make a positive contribution toward a functioning society.

Peter Drucker said, “The only thing we know about the future is that it will be different.” Planning for the future of any business is a challenge. Add navigating family dynamics and generational succession planning, and you have really stacked your odds. The Drucker School Global Family Business Institute connects family businesses with leaders who have overcome the challenges unique to the family enterprise, resources to help identify and strategize effective solutions, and support to address the complexities of generational differences. The institute serves as an educational arm of the Drucker School of Management that equips current family business leaders with relevant training to ensure continued business success, understand wise wealth management, and refine interpersonal skills as well as set the stage for the next generation of leaders. We do this in a variety of ways:

Education Sessions We believe that opportunities to connect with other family businesses are crucial for both professional and personal growth. That’s why we offer several education sessions throughout the year that create a space to engage, learn, and belong.

Podcast Our podcast series, “Very Different Rules,” sheds light on the distinct journey of family-owned businesses and the rules they adhere to that both bind and benefit. Through authentic conversations with the leaders of these organizations, we uncover the unique issues and opportunities of family businesses and how they define success.

Newsletter Our online newsletter includes information on family business trends, articles, resources, institute member highlights, events, and how to support the institute.

Managing the Family Business Course Drucker School faculty, in collaboration with family business leaders and experts, provide students with a dynamic classroom experience in the Managing the Family Business course. Built around live case studies, available research, and peer-to-peer learning, the course equips students with the knowledge and tools to confidently address the real-life issues they face in their family businesses.

The Global Family Business Student Advisory Club The goal of the Global Family Business Student Advisory Club is to create a hub where students who work in or come from family businesses can engage with and learn from one another as well as leaders and experts affiliated with the institute.

To be eligible for a family membership, members must work for or come from a family business. We define a family business as any family-owned and managed business in which two or more family members are involved, and the majority of ownership, or control, lies within a family.

PARTNERS’ PROGRAM The goal of the Drucker School Global Family Business Institutes Partners’ Program is to provide members of the institute with ongoing support when dealing with issues in their family-run businesses, either in person or remotely. The program is limited to non-competing partners who have experience working with complex and multigenerational family businesses as well as an active interest in the challenges and needs of our members. All partners agree to a “sales-free” environment so members will feel comfortable engaging with partners. artners will be recognized on all print materials, our P website, at an annual symposium, and in annual reports. ■■ Partners are invited to attend all events organized by the institute and will receive personal invitations to other events hosted by the Drucker School and Claremont Graduate University. ■■ Partners may be invited to participate as a guest instructor for Managing the Family Business classes or speak at events/workshops depending on their industry expertise. ■■

Drucker School Global Family Business Institute Industry Board The purpose of the Drucker School Global Family Business Industry Board is to provide guidance and direction on the institute’s strategic initiatives to develop leaders who run sustainable family businesses that can be passed on to future generations and make a positive contribution toward a functioning society. The mission of the industry board is to support the growth of the institute by: roviding feedback on curriculum, programs, research focus, and brand positioning P Being an active advocate for student development by mentoring a least one student per year ■■ Serving as guest lecturer, hosting field visits, providing case study opportunities, assisting in student recruitment, and connecting family businesses to the institute ■■ Supporting the financial goals of the institute by establishing meaningful connections with industry leaders and other family business centers ■■ ■■
