A New Paradigm Today, successful delivery of high performance data centers is built on a new paradigm. The facilities that support providers of scalable and virtualized resources demand innovation at every level – from the design of the facility itself, to the way in which the project is delivered, and the people who deliver it.

The work of IDC Architects (IDCA) embodies that new paradigm. We bring together the best people with the best tools and processes to provide start-to-finish coordination of architecture and engineering. Our approach focuses on innovation from design concept through commissioning; from procurement of long lead equipment through systems integration; from the way we document project information to the way we report it.

It’s about creating an environment where innovation and invention flourish, people work to their highest potential, and best value is captured for our clients. It means never settling for the status quo, always asking “what if.” It’s a philosophy and a culture we’ve forged and refined over two decades of partnering with demanding clients to deliver the most challenging data center projects in the world.

Whether your goal is a new building, or retrofit of an existing facility, look to the leader in mission critical planning, design and construction – IDC Architects.

The Basis of Design – A Framework for Success What are your true requirements? This question is at the heart of our design process. Our approach is vendorneutral – we’re not selling pre-packaged “solutions.” Instead, we start with a collaborative programming effort, working with you to tightly define your project requirements. The resulting Basis of Design is a roadmap to success – aligning scope and budget, maximizing constructability, and providing a framework for effective change management.

High Performance Design Tools We validate decisions early in the concept phase utilizing our 3D rapid prototyping process, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, and energy and structural analysis programs. These powerful tools help fine-tune project solutions by test-driving our designs.

3D Rapid Prototyping This interactive design process allows us to quickly test different functional layouts. As specific information is acquired during programming, we build a working 3D model of each functional area. By evaluating massing and spatial arrangements in real time, we immediately see how different decisions impact flexibility, adjacencies, and overall building form. This tool builds consensus, greatly reduces project risk, and avoid later changes that can impact cost and schedule.

Airflow Modeling Particularly valuable in data centers, airflow modeling (using Computational Fluid Dynamics, or CFD) helps evaluate the environmental performance of a facility, apply innovative energy efficiency measures, and implement sustainable design strategies such as natural ventilation.

Sustainable Solutions At IDCA, we re-thought mission critical green design from the ground up, with ideas like hot and cold aisle separation, innovative use of outside air, and optimal site orientation. By focusing on the specific goals of each customer – and the unique opportunities of each site – we deliver world-class performance, great people spaces, and cost savings over the life of the facility.

Integrated Architecture and Engineering By focusing on the synergy between architecture, engineering, and planning, our design process is uniquely suited to the demands of today’s nextgeneration data centers. Our teams of architects and engineers are located in project team spaces, enhancing communication and collaboration. This integrated approach is a powerful platform for innovation.

Confidential Client,

Regence

Virginia, USA

Salt Lake City, Utah

After developing the initial basis of design (BOD), IDC Architects is providing full design services to convert over one million SF of semiconductor manufacturing space for data center use. The fully converted facility will consist of five major buildings; with over 500,000 SF of raised floor space it is the largest data center complex in the world. The project met aggressive schedule challenges to support the client’s business plan, with the initial 12,000 SF of raised floor designed in just 60 days.

IDCA performed a facility evaluation to provide Regence with a comprehensive understanding of its critical data center facilities. Based on the findings, we developed a master plan that recommended a new electrical infrastructure for the campus, and, to elevate data center reliability, segregation of data center power from office building power. Options were developed to respond to long term growth requirements. Finally, IDCA provided detailed design for new campus infrastructure and comprehensive upgrades that improve reliability, and position the facility for future capacity to support Regence corporate requirements.

•  World’s largest data center complex •  Raised floor within white space to accommodate air management and flexibility •  Innovative flexible “multi-tier” distribution approach for varying customer needs •  Sustainable design with consideration for LEED® (Silver or Gold)

•  Evaluation of electrical system capacities, historical load analysis, system configuration, equipment condition •  Master planning •  Design for new campus infrastructure and upgrades •  Civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical services during construction
