Adrian Michael once wrote, “She is a queen, her soul is royalty!” The joy of supporting and encouraging women and treating them like royalty is something that was inherited in Kal from the very beginning by his mom. Kal has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with a major in Computer Networks. He worked in the corporate world for 16 years in business management, including time as an instructor with Hewlett Packard Education Canada. Kal is also a certified medical aesthetician and skincare specialist and was awarded the Student of the Year Award at esthetics school. Throughout his career in advertising, photography and art (both passions of Kal’s), and medical esthetics, he worked for international brands like Revlon, Nivea, Pepsi, Hewlett Packard, Citigroup, L’Oreal, Rodan & Fields, Dermalogica, RVB Skin Labs, Yonka, Diego Dalla Palma and many others. He has always found himself surrounded by strong, professional women and without their support, he could not have accomplished many of the very exciting endeavours that life has brought his way, both as a challenge and as a career.

She has completed her master’s degree in Education, with specializations in Technological Literacy and Special Education. 2020 has been a year of ups and downs. Though this year has brought intense grief for some due to the pandemic, it also created a reset to life for many. Our journey at Chaarmz Magazine has been the same. Although we encountered many challenges working during these past months, presenting a healthy outlook on life has been a humbling experience. The holiday season offers us a chance to look back on the past twelve months and reflect on the resilience of so many and all that we have accomplished together. I am proud of my team’s pliability to present you with the 202021 Winter Issue of Chaarmz Magazine. Our cover story is one of resilience and perseverance. Nahal Soltani is a Toronto-based model who uses Instagram to speak on social justice issues and topics related to gender inequality in her birth country of Iran. She strives to empower and motivate women to bring about change in societies where change is not always welcomed and where advocates of social reform are routinely arrested and imprisoned for their activism; a fate Nahal knows all too well as she was forced to flee Iran and start a new life in Canada.

We have also highlighted the artwork of prominent figures in the Canadian art scene such as Peter Triantos, Max Jamali, and Agata Wisniewski. True to form, this issue includes the makeup, hair, and fashion trends of the season as well as wellness topics about good nutrition, healthy relationships with others and ourselves, and keeping a positive and grateful mindset. While 2020 has posed unprecedented challenges, it also illuminated all that we must be thankful for. I want to take this opportunity to thank our team and colleagues, mostly women, who were still driven to write, pose, and present themselves in the most positive manner possible. It is impossible to mention everyone’s name here but rest assured that all of you are revered and encouraged to take this journey further. You have shown over and over again that your passion for life and art and to create something unique yet contemporary has given new life to this magazine. Our future in 2021 looks optimistic as we continue to try to preserve the core of life in the best possible manner. The world has changed, and we must adapt, make the most of it, and carry on. Exciting times await, and we are delighted that because of you, we are aligned to propel in a direction filled with many wonders and creativity.

We are also happy to share the personal story of Wendy Crystal, a TV personality, model, and entrepreneur. Wendy uses the metaphor of ‘rising above the ashes like a phoenix’ to symbolize her journey from hardship to glamour and success. Wendy’s resounding messages of hope in her editorial include: it is never too late to pursue your dreams, move forward and believe the obstacles you are facing are paving the way for your future, and we are given challenges to unfold the opportunities that hide within us. Life at home has taken on new meaning as many of us are now working, shopping (online), exercising, and entertaining from home more than ever before. We have several editorials that address how the pandemic has changed our lives in these ways. Our real estate editorial discusses how the trends in luxury home design have seen the incorporation of outdoor living spaces, gourmet kitchens, home offices, and gyms, allowing us to work and play, retreat and entertain all under one roof. The editorial entitled ‘5 Production Basics to Be an At-Home Pro’ addresses the tips to keep in mind when hosting guests, conducting interviews, holding meetings, or just sharing with your followers to make your at-home production projects look professional.

How to survive the

Winter Blues!

In the Northern Hemisphere, we welcome winter on December 21, and for many, this is the start of the most challenging part of the year. This year we are doing it COVID-19 style, so the winter blues may feel that much stronger.

Winter is not meant to be bad if we just allow ourselves to surrender to its wisdom. Just like the summer is the time for prosperity and abundance, and fall is the time for transformation, winter is the time for introspection and reflection. We have been gifted this period to slow down and seek inner peace and wisdom. It is in this silence and stillness that we find the guidance, motivation, and courage to begin a new chapter once spring arrives. With the difficulty of this entire year, we might have to work a little harder over the next couple of months to simply get through them. If you want to beat the winter blues,

take extra care of your body, mind, and soul.

Our physical body is a vessel that both influences and reflects our thoughts and emotions. Taking care of the body is always the first step to wellness. Many of our emotions are created in the gut and are directly influenced by what we put into our bodies. Staying active, choosing healthy

and balanced meals, and taking vitamins is an important step to feeling great.

Our mind is one of the rare things we have full control over. It is easy to allow it to run wild and create scenarios in our head that may not be in our best interest. Ultimately, what we focus on we invite in, and that’s just the law of attraction.

Take some time to connect to your inner you. Create

a difficult period, invest in a session with a professional who can help shift your energy and empower you with some new perspectives.

Above all, remember that everything in life is temporary. Tomorrow always brings new possibilities. If today is a hard day, tomorrow doesn’t have to be. Take this time to rest, go inward and reflect. Observe where you are and where you want to be. Set some goals for yourself! Spring is just around the corner, so get ready for those new beginnings.

L

et’s face it, this world of beauty is not what it was ten years ago. Every single day we are bombarded with new products, changing trends, new apps, etc. What are we supposed to keep up with? How can we ever compete with the big influencers and make our mark in this massive beauty industry? I’m here to share my story and some expert tips and advice to inspire you to keep pushing!

I started doing makeup in my early teens. I had a ton of acne and wanted to learn how to apply makeup correctly. At the time, I didn’t know that I wanted to do makeup on others or in a professional setting; I just knew that I loved the art of makeup and loved how much makeup could transform. I decided to go to makeup school and eventually got certified as a makeup artist. I volunteered everywhere I could, from Ottawa Fashion Week to Caribana to New York Fashion Week. Over a few years, I built a huge network of people and really developed my skill to get to where I am now--working full-time as a makeup artist. I have a team of artists working for me, a makeup studio and a lash line. None of these things happened overnight, but all of it would be worth it. Over the years, I paved my own way, navigating the ‘road bumps’ one situation at a time. I must admit that not one person’s path will be the same, but

there are things to keep in mind that can guarantee success: You have to keep pushing!!

Social media has this way of making it seem like everyone is succeeding except you. Trust me, social media is not always real life. People are posting success way more than failure, so a word of advice when you are comparing yourself to other influencers—DON’T! Look at them for inspiration but do not compare. Keep up with technology. The best way is just to put yourself out there. Try it! I must admit that I was resistant to using social media at the beginning; I had to get one of my friends to sit down and make an Instagram account for me. Wow, am I ever grateful for her!

It’s not necessary to keep up with all the new trends. There are new makeup products and trends changing constantly. Honestly, I don’t think you can keep up unless you work with the products specifically, and I also don’t think it is necessary. Know what you need to know to do an amazing job and learn as you go. The biggest key to success is not the trends here and there, it is the consistent good work. The best thing you can do is be consistent in trying your best every time and paving your own path, whatever that looks like for you.

The Intricacies of Petals:

I am fascinated with illumination from within; to me, it exemplifies the soul shining through. Light is an omnipresent force that permeates through physical matter and gives it life. I see peonies as symbols of humans. The dynamic shapes and variety of petals remind me of our facets/parts creating and completing a whole. Each petal is unique and an opportunity for growth towards spiritual evolution. It may be more or less illuminated by light; however, it is an integral part of a whole flower. The twists and turns of the nature of the petals remind me of life and our paths. My spiritual and meditative practices have exposed me to the importance of chakras, which are energy centres in our bodies. Peonies also remind me of chakras; the dynamics of petals look like they are in constant movement. Each painting of the flower has a specific ‘energy signature,’ which evokes an emotion, feeling and visual impact resonating with the viewer; many times, it also has a healing quality.

I

am a lifelong artist and started my creative journey as a child. I was born in Poland and was enrolled in the arts as a four-year-old, winning a Polish national art award for a child artist at eight years old. At 14, I moved to Canada and attended Cawthra Park Secondary School for a specialized arts program. I studied at York University, receiving a Fine Arts degree with a double major in Psychology. After graduation, I also finished a program at Ryerson Polytechnic University for Graphic Communications. I opened my studio in the Alton Mill Arts Centre in March 2019, and it has been an exhilarating experience ever since. I am very thankful for how well the audience has received my art projects. While moving through various themes, the subject of flowers is very uplifting and inspirational for me. I take illuminated photographs to create compositions to be painted on canvas. I enjoy the large format because it makes me feel like I get lost inside the flower’s beauty. I tend to choose dynamic compositions of peonies as they exhume a sense of movement and facets of the whole.

The intricacies of petals and the sense of movement resemble a never-ending dance with its various spectrums of light and dark and the beautiful outcome it creates in a composition. It symbolizes our journey through life.

We at Chilly Moose have a deep love of exploring the outdoors - a desire to always explore around the next bend and over the next hill. ajestic mountains, wooded foothills, tree-lined ski slopes, lush nature reserves, crystal clear lakes, and pristine streets – the only way to describe it is idyllic. Austria is one of western Europe’s well-kept secrets and is lucky enough not to have been overrun by tourists, despite the beauty of the landscape and its cultural scene in urban areas. Vienna, the country’s capital, is a distinguished cultural hub and elegant city that has produced many notable musicians, Mozart and Hayden to name a few. Thinking of Vienna makes me nostalgic for wandering around and getting lost in the beauty of the maze of baroque and art nouveau streets in the museum quarter. Sipping lattes and eating chocolate cake in grand Viennese cafes or wandering around the Albertina museum. A city full of culture and class, yet somehow there is something quite down-to-earth about it. Vienna is sure not to disappoint for a fix of culture, but if you fancy some nature and tranquillity with picturesque views, venture out into the countryside. Austria tends to be a more popular destination in the ski season, but the small towns have a lot to offer in the summer as well. Kitzbühel is a medieval town situated in the rugged peaks of the Kitzbühel Alps in the region of Tyrol. I was lucky to be sent there to work for a week one August. When I stepped off the train from Vienna (a six-hour journey), the first thing that struck me was the beauty of the place. As I wandered down the cobbled streets breathing in the fresh mountain air, I found myself stopping at every turn to take another

photo. The whole town was picture perfect. Streets are lined with traditional Austrian restaurants and bars that are warm, friendly, and have that typical Austrian local charm. There are colourful buildings housing upscale shops, horse-drawn carriages, church steeples, and a 16th-century bell tower surrounded by the Kitzbühel Alps. During ski season from October to May, Kitzbühel is a worldfamous ski resort frequented primarily by the haut monde. Visiting in the off-season, you will miss the experience of the après-ski scene; however, the summer is equally appealing. Temperatures can reach a warm 30’C in the day, but mountain evenings are pleasantly cool and offer a good night’s sleep. Many tourists are attracted to Kitzbühel in the summer for the mountain biking, hiking, paragliding, and swimming in the emerald green moor, Lake Schwarzsee (Black Lake). The town hosts the Hahnenkamm – the famous Alpine World Cup Ski Race – which was won four years in a row by the ‘Crazy Canucks’ starting in 1980, who were for a long time the only non-European winners until an American, Daron Rahlves, won it in 2006. The Hahnenkamm takes place on the infamous Streif Piste - considered to be the most challenging of all the downhill slopes in the world and is watched by 500 million viewers worldwide. Apart from the Hahnenkamm and the charm of the town itself, Kitzbühel attracts skiers by virtue of the extensive number of ski runs suited to all skiing ability levels - even offering easy-to-access off-piste areas for the more adventurous cat skiers.

The wiener schnitzel (Viennese), which is fried breaded veal, is probably the most well-known Austrian specialty and is similar to the Milanese cotoletta. Another delicious specialty to look out for is tafelspitz, boiled veal or beef in broth with minced apples and horseradish. Many restaurants serve game (from the old hunting tradition) and seasonal vegetables like pumpkin in Autumn. For drinks on summer nights, try a beer, spritzer or a grüner veltliner (a white wine with subtle citrus and peppery flavours), a personal favourite of mine! For snowy wintery evenings, warm up with some mulled wine (glüwein). Austria has a famous coffee culture, and legend has it that it was the Austrians themselves who introduced coffee to Europe after bags of Turkish coffee were left behind after the battle of Vienna in 1683. You can also try the Austrian melange, which is a milder version of a cappuccino.

Enjoy and indulge in Tirolean delights in a mountain restaurant with panoramic views of rolling hills and small lakes On my last day in Kitzbühel, my colleagues and I took the cable car up to the top of the infamous Hahnenkamm Mountain. I was not expecting, nor could I have imagined the sheer beauty and breath-taking views. It is hard to put into words the feeling of sitting outside on a pleasantly cool summer mountain evening with panoramic views of rolling hills and small sparkling lakes while eating the famous Tiroler Gröstel (fried bacon, potato, and onion) and sipping a glass of grüner veltliner. My evening finished with a shot of Schnapps at the Hocheckhütte Inn, along with the owners and the locals before we caught the last cable car back down to town. Hocheckhütte This inn has a friendly and welcoming staff, mouth-watering food, and a garden with picturesque panoramic views. During this differently paced year, I have made the time to redefine my perception of balance, a paradigm shift if you will. Attending the gym has been sporadic, and for me, a lack of structured habits can lead to sedentary behaviour. I am suggesting that we create a new self-care habit over the next thirty days. Create it! Just like that. Regardless of your current athletic status. Doing so can help generate the mindset required to make staying healthy, in a time of flux, a very attainable goal. Physical wellness relies on mindset. Period. Full stop. When you actively nurture your mindset, it becomes possible to reach goals, physical and otherwise.

Make that goal important enough to plan your day around the time you need to get it done. Make no excuses, zero, for thirty days. Perform this task and then bask in the joy of it. If you are just starting, pick a smaller goal, like walking/speed walking/jogging for

15 minutes, Zumba, jumping jacks (low impact or high), etc., every single day, no matter what (aside from injury). Carve out 15 minutes a day, just for you. This exercise of altering your mindset will change your life if you make it a habit. Wanting to change is powerful, but it is not enough. Willpower is a resource that can run out. Find an activity that brings you joy in movement, and it won’t be a chore to actively create a wellness mindset. Max Jamali

What made you realize art had that ‘element’ you were looking for? I remember always thinking to myself, “How unfortunate it is that after a team spends weeks to create an editorial concept and bring it to life, the lifetime of that editorial (which is very much a form of art on its own) is as short as the shelf-life of that magazine’s issue. One thing I really value about creating original artworks is the fact that it is appreciated for years to come, talked about, and lived with.

What is your constant inspiration? I always believed in creating exciting short-term and long-term goals in my calendar to let it pull me forward instead of pushing myself forward. It’s a concept I learned at Grant Cardone’s Marketing Seminar in Miami, and it has been a huge game-changer for me. I simply dream as big and realistic as I can, set specific dates for it, and get myself so excited that I wake up in a positive spirit almost every single day to pursue that goal. That is exactly how I managed to be a part of two shows during Art Basel 2019 and in early 2020 to expand my brand to Beverly Hills and Hollywood.

How did Covid-19 affect your plans? Prior to the pandemic, my main focus was to expand to Europe during the summer of 2020, as I had shows planned with my brand partners in Monaco, Mykonos, and Lisbon. After I came back to Toronto from L.A. in early March of 2020, I realized how serious the pandemic’s effects were on the market, and that’s when the city went into shutdown. I’m not going to lie, the first six weeks were full of uncertainty as I had to re-plan my whole marketing for the rest of the year. Instead, I decided to work on making my brand stronger in North America and create interactive virtual platforms so my clients can experience the brand from anywhere.

What are you excited about now?

T

he luxury mixed-media artist, Max Jamali, is famous for the use of luxurious items to create his art. Based in Toronto, Max has an award-winning background in fashion photography, with his artwork showcased in Toronto, Miami, L.A. and Dubai. In contrast with other artists, Max’s work focuses on luxury itself as a medium. He uses diamond dust, exotic leather, 24k gold, genuine silver, and Swarovski crystals to create pieces that scream opulence. Chaarmz Magazine had an exclusive interview with Max Jamali to learn more about the man behind the luxury artwork.

Who is Max Jamali? I feel that because my name, ‘Max Jamali,’ also represents my brand, my personal and professional brands are almost parallel to one another. I would say I would like ‘Max Jamali’ to represent a harmony between exotic and luxurious materials that come together to use my audience’s creative skill and imagination to trigger their emotional power. After all, art is all about the expression.

What is the inspiration behind the brand? To simply describe it, I have been fascinated by design and architecture since my teenage years in Dubai. The city is visually super luxurious and literally limitless. It was continually pushing me to find a way of expressing my creative side, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t realize it until later, but it had planted a seed in my mind to pursue luxury in my own way, which originated my career in fashion photography. Although photography was a huge passion of mine, there was a missing element that I later found in art.

What is the reason behind the

At the moment, aside from the custom works I am creating with multiple interior design projects and coorganizing the Reve De Moi Collaborative Art Exhibit launch in Dubai for 2021, I am very excited about launching my sculpture series. The series will be available for custom orders through my website as well as in person with the luxury furniture company, Modern Sense. The hand-created sculptures are just over 2 feet high, cast with epoxy, and layered with luxurious materials such as crocodile, python, and stingray to diamonds, emeralds, and ruby stones. This series will be an introduction of the Ultra Luxurious Sculpture Series, called DI LUSSO Luxury Sculptures.

DI LUSSO name? When I first thought about creating a sculpture, I wanted it to be something that its collector could see themselves in it by combining their favourite colours, textures, and materials. A form that describes it’s owner’s desire so deeply and accurately that it creates that luxurious feeling in them every time they look at the sculpture. I also decided to call it DI LUSSO, which means luxury in Italian, because of my fascination with Italian luxury elements.

ROBIN: The pandemic is merely augmenting what is. If you are an anxious person, this will be enhanced. If you are a resilient person who embraces change, the pandemic will be far easier to navigate than for those who resist change. At the end of the day, your relationship will be an amplified version of your pre-pandemic relationship. LISA: So then, I see why the little habits that we once found adorable in our partners- like a childish laugh- went from mildly irritating to nearly intolerable now. Why does this change happen in the first place?

Robin H-C is a behaviourist and author of the best-selling book series Life’s in Session! She lives in Creemore, Ontario. Lisa Taggart is a freelance writer and editor from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who enjoys curiosity and the answers found through it.

Love is such a gloriously splendid thing! Until it isn’t. We all have an image of how we want our love relationships to be. Our minds fill with images of lovers clinging to each other as they walk, happy couples sharing their lives, cozy togetherness, tender moments, and of course, sex (and lots of it). Realistically, we know that life can’t be happy and roses all of the time, but lately, many of us haven’t been very happy with our relationships at all.

The culprit? Too much time together! Covid-era relationships are a challenge. Will this era of hyper-togetherness permanently damage our love relationships? How can we fix this? To get answers, I asked the best-selling author and behaviourist, Robin H.C.

LISA: We see that Covid togetherness has many couples heading for the divorce courts and many others heading into countless fighting matches. Positive feelings for our partners seem to diminish to the point of no return! Is there hope that people can bounce back from this negativity?

ROBIN: There is a scientific term called the Honeymoon Effect. In the early stages of partnership, people awaken from the unconscious state that they live in 95% of the time (think autopilot). This effect engages the frontal lobe, waking people up, so to speak- they feel inspired and empowered because they are mindful, and as such, they look for evidence that their partner is a good fit. A couple of years pass, and they slowly become unconscious again, and this effect wears off. People begin to treat their partners as they do themselves. They notice their faults instead of paying attention to the initial charms that brought them together. To combat this misaligned focus, for every irritating thing your partner does, notice a few things about them that you are grateful for. Covid is a good reminder that life is short. Think of how much you might value that annoying quirk if your partner weren’t here tomorrow. LISA: Reminding yourself of your partner’s strengths is a good idea. What about the physical relationship? More people than you would expect have lost interest in a sexual relationship with their partner. How can this be remedied? It is terrifying to lose (and even to admit that you have lost) the sexual connection. ROBIN: Good sex requires being present and in the moment. When a couple neglects to address issues as they arise, a build-up happens. Sex can become a chore when closeness has dissipated. Practise acceptance with your partner and honesty with yourself. Much like a workout, we rarely regret it after the fact. If you are not feeling it, clear the debris, try counselling, and get truthful – sex is a bonding experience and is rather critical to relationship health. LISA: I agree. Intimacy is so important, and we’re drifting away from the very people we’re closest to. It seems like so many people are carrying around bad feelings. Surely, no one enjoys feeling cranky and annoyed, nor taking the brunt of someone else’s anger. Even sarcastic comments can feel like mean-spirited attacks. How do we stop a hurtful cycle like this?

ROBIN: There is a cultural bias to blame our partner for our happiness, but think back- what version of yourself did you initially bring to the relationship? How are you altered positively for knowing him/her? What can you do to create a more inspired you in this moment? Anger is a normal emotion, and culturally we tend to suppress it. People are entitled to bad moods, and we all benefit when we learn not to take them personally. Though tempting, it is not healthy to blame your partner for setting the tone of the day due to her/his mood. It creates a victim narrative, and victims give power to the victimizer. Allow them the space to feel what they feel without making them wrong. The love and friendship bond increases when we learn to love our partner’s ugly bits and not just their strengths. This can be especially difficult if you have little space for your own shortcomings. LISA: Yes, little space... literally. Clearly, though, I see that the move toward positive togetherness starts in our own minds. Is there something simple that we can do when we catch ourselves in our own negativity? Something to ‘snap’ us out of it? ROBIN: Negative emotions are our teachers— when we listen and understand them. A recurring negative emotion has a remedy, likely an action you can take to diffuse it. Use your emotions to identify when you are on-track or off-course. Remember, the brain is a problem-seeking mechanism. The primitive amygdala brain is always scanning the environment for threats. Without an inspiring focal point in your life, it will revert to petty issues to engage itself. Give your brain a puzzle worthy of your life force! It may be: how do I get my fashion line in the USA, what will it take for me to write my screenplay, or how do I raise $100,000.00 for my favourite charity? The brain loves puzzles that invite discovery and creation of a higher level of self. LISA: To stay focused on your own learning and growth is the best advice. Thank you, Robin. Now we know to try not to take things personally, give our partner more space to ‘be,’ and focus our attention on our partners’ positive attributes and ourselves. There is a road to relationship recovery.

A Confident Woman in Pursuit of Happiness, Freedom, And Equality By Farid Ameryoun

The UN General Assembly has designated November 25 as the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.” The aim is to raise awareness about the challenges faced by women globally, specifically conditions and attitudes that normalize/legalize acts of violence against women. Following the recent Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests, race and gender inequality are once again hot topics and back in the media spotlight. Hundreds of women’s rights groups have also been busy organizing marches and trying to attract a bit of that spotlight on their specific cause and struggle. Here in Canada, more people are waking up and recognizing instances of inequality in our seemingly perfect society and questioning what needs to be done to pave the road towards a more just and equitable society.

P

assionate about the plight of women, Nahal Soltani is a courageous young woman who has stepped out into dangerous unknown territories--risking her life--to speak out against injustice for women worldwide. The 32-year-old Toronto based model has an incredible 1.3 million Instagram fan base, but unlike many of her peers, she uses the platform to speak on social justice issues and topics related to gender inequality in her birth country of Iran. Many of Nahal’s followers are young Iranian women, and she strives to empower and motivate them in bringing about change in a society where change is not always welcomed and where advocates of social reform are routinely arrested and imprisoned for their activism.

Nahal grew up in Iran experiencing first-hand prejudice in a society that overtly and systematically discriminates against its female citizens and where many courageous women have either been killed or are currently in prison for pushing and fighting for reform. Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the takeover of power by westernbacked Islamic radicals, the authorities have imposed a mandatory dress code that enforces all women to wear loose-fitting clothing and the hijab (headscarf) in public. Other laws prohibit women from attending sporting events in stadiums or leaving the country without their male guardians’ permission. As a teenager, Nahal was deeply troubled by such discrimination and was constantly in trouble with the authorities for disobeying their laws. She finds the memories of that period both terrifying and amusing. She recalls a story about cutting her hair really short and dressing up as a boy so that she could attend soccer matches with her guy friends. She was also sent home from school regularly for disregarding the dress code or for speaking up.

I was extremely fortunate to have the support of my mother and two older sisters. My father comes from a religious family, but he generally kept quiet on such matters. It was that support from my family that enabled me to stand up, without it, I probably would’ve been discouraged early on.

She has become an inspiration to many Iranian women of her generation and wants to fully empower those currently living in fear of expressing and embodying their innate female qualities. These days, trending posts on her social media accounts portray a successful and beautiful hijab-less Iranian woman enjoying her new life in Canada. She credits that move as the turning point of her life and career. Since relocating to Toronto, Nahal has been busy keeping up with requests from national and international brands looking to collaborate with her. She is regularly travelling to LA, London, and Amsterdam to sign with fashion and cosmetic companies wishing to showcase and introduce their products to her growing fanbase. She describes Toronto as a major fashion hub and a contender in the industry: “I understand why international brands are showing interest in this city; Toronto finally has the growth and the wealth to be noticed. The multicultural nature of the city also makes it an attractive destination for designers and other artists.”

Nahal finds Toronto to be a great place for any young female artist to live and work. She points out that Torontonians are very mindful of the value that art and artists add to their great city and do a wonderful job of protecting artists and public art space.

“ This city has been very good to me.

This new popularity proved to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, she started receiving countless invitations to attend public events or act in music videos. “The offers typically came from other young artists who were tired of the status quo; they wanted to change and to cause change. They saw it as an opportunity to partner up or feature a defiant young girl in their art form. It was also helpful for me to attract new audiences and gain popularity. I am very grateful to those that helped me early on.” On the other hand, this newfound attention would eventually get the notice of authorities higher up and cause trouble for Nahal. She knew full-well of the risks of her actions and the heavy-handed punishment that she faced. Like so many other young Iranians, Nahal was forced to flee and start a new life in the West, where she continues to advocate for women’s rights as a public figure.

At the young age of twenty-two, the emboldened Nahal decided to make a statement against the unjust Iranian laws by removing her hijab in public--a defiant act that has landed many women in prison. Soon after, her popularity started to grow, and thousands of young Iranian girls began following her on Instagram. Nahal gives credit to women activists before her for paving the road for her generation.

I come from a place where young women are usually not taken seriously; by giving a spotlight to women like myself, publications like Chaarmz are changing that misconception.

Nahal continues to blog about her current lifestyle, unapologetically embracing her multi-faceted talents as a model and pop singer; she released her first music album, “Who’s Like Me,” in 2012. She poses as an influential figure for not only women in Iran but for all women across the spectrum who continue to face adversity because of their genetic makeup. She encapsulates the beauty

of a confident woman in pursuit of happiness, freedom, and equality.

Like The Phoenix, I RISE ABOVE THE ASHES By Wendy Crystal “Like the phoenix, I rise above the ashes,” a sentence that rings truer for me than ever before. Who knew at 40 years old I would decide it was finally time to get a tattoo? Many may see this as juvenile for my age, saying, “Did you not go through that at 17?” I always wanted one but knew it had to be the right one. At 40, it was the right time. I wanted to be reminded that every time I find myself on the ground, burned and broken, what emerges is bigger, better, and stronger. A reminder that the opportunities in life often lie in the challenges we face. Like the phoenix that rises from the ashes, I tattooed that down my left arm, including an image of the infinity sign (for strength and belief in myself). For the first time, I felt exceptional in my own skin. My tattoo tells my story; it reminds me of the many roads I’ve walked and hoops I’ve jumped through to create the person I am meant to be! There is a light inside of me that burns bright, and it is there to inspire, motivate, and captivate people. It is no wonder that at a young age, I fell in love with the camera. I used to tell my mother the release of artistic expression is monumental. I knew I had something to share.

I grew up the only daughter to a single mother of three. My childhood was not one filled with a lot of love, emotional support or the freedoms that finance brings; we were poor. The trauma I endured as a young child could have landed me on the streets as a drug addict and prostitute. I can safely say neither of these outcomes is where I ended up. I was born a survivor, moving forward and believing the obstacles I faced were paving the way for my future. I always remind myself that we are given challenges to unfold the opportunities that hide within. At 12-13 years old, I started modelling. I worked on several movies and was offered contracts to work in Taipei and Milan. Any young model’s dream come true, right? Well, not really. If you do not have the necessary parental support needed to travel abroad for months at a time, then it does not happen. So, I watched my modelling career fizzle just as it was about to start.

The determination to be something that came from nothing burned inside me. At 18 years old, I found myself on the doorsteps of Jenny Craig. I started as a consultant and moved my way up to director, running two very successful locations. This is where I found my passion for counselling people to help them change their lives. However, after a few years, I would find myself staring out my office window and wondering,

“Had I stayed in modelling/acting, where would I be? What would be different?” All too often, we sit in the ‘what if ’ in life. In a fleeting moment of motivation, I picked up the phone, called my boss and gave my one month’s notice. I was not going to let the light of life burn out. I knew my self-worth. I knew if I could do what I did by age 22, what else was out there for me?

At just 23 years old and feeling old in the modelling industry, I ascended on the agencies like a bird, looking for the right one to represent me. I flew to Miami and enrolled in a modelling competition where the winner would get a contract with one of the world’s top agencies. After several days of competitions, they announce the winners. Suddenly, I feel a bright light on my face and see myself on the screen, “It’s me, I actually won!” I became a Ford model and was blessed with opportunities to travel. I lived in Hamburg, Germany and South Africa for months. These trips were life-changing on so many levels, especially on a spiritual level. The opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures, climb mountains (literally and figuratively), and have new experiences shaped my being. I became one of the top hand and foot models, did a lot of catalogue work, landed a few great campaigns, and became the face of Fashion Television circa 2004.

This led me to love the art of cosmetics and the transformation it has. In 2008, I started a cosmetic company called Inspire Cosmetics. I was driven to help women see the true beauty they possess with an easy ‘Drab to Fab in 5 Minutes’ natural cosmetics line. I built a consultant team and travelled around many national women’s shows. I ended up landing the Argo’s cheerleader contract for several years and customizing their iconic look! From there came the life-changing decision to try and have a baby. Having faced medical issues that directly affected my opportunity to get pregnant, I wanted to try. After many failed months, I finally got the great news that I was having twins! However, after miscarrying one of the babies, I was put on bed rest. Fast forward a few months, an opportunity to audition as a national television host at a place I always wanted to work at presents itself. It was my dream job. So, I strolled into the audition wearing Spanx to hide my baby bump, and I did my ‘thang.’ Two months go by, and I finally get a phone call; they have decided to offer me the job. After 45 mins, I’m asked, “Is there anything you would like to ask us?” I respond by revealing, “I’m 26 weeks pregnant. Does that change anything?” Crickets and another two months go by. I get another phone call and it’s them, “Okay, we want you,” they say. At eight months pregnant, I went on Live Television for the first time. I mean, if I sneezed, I would pee or worse! I spent the next seven years doing a job I loved. I excelled to prime-time hours and had the honour of doing a seasonal fashion show with Jeanne Beker. I created a special show celebrating Barbie’s 60th anniversary with luxury, unique collectibles. I have met and worked with some of the most amazing celebrities, CEO’s, and inspirational people. I lived, slept, and breathed for this job. It was everything to me.

eeling like I had finally made it, COVID-19 hits and changes the game. Everything I knew went upside down. For the first few months, many of us were just trying to wrap our heads around what was happening and what this “new normal” would look like. During this time, that fire from within started to burn again, along with the need to connect, support, and entertain. I created a social media show called “Girls Nite In,” where I invite you in and share some of my favourite fashions, cosmetics, skincare, home décor, and a little cooking in the kitchen, sending the message that we are in this together! With all the changes that none of us saw coming, we must embrace the uncomfortable feeling of the unknown. We have been given this opportunity to realize who we are meant to be and the time to make it happen.

Here’s to my next chapter—I will rise once again like the phoenix!

stelle Ohayon, of EO Art Concierge Inc., has been a secondary art market specialist focusing primarily on old masters, Impressionists and contemporary artists. Her career began while on a trip overseas several years ago, purchasing a piece of art from a local gallery. “The artist’s work moved me, and since I recently joined a Gala Committee for the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada, I decided to ask the gallery for a donation. Not only did they agree to donate, but they also committed to create a custom piece for the Foundation. The piece was a hit at the auction, and by the end of the night, I knew I found my calling,” recalls Estelle. Over the next several years, Estelle plunged herself into the art world: learning, researching, and building relationships with a vast network of international art dealers, artists, galleries, and private clients. She continues to support charitable endeavours through her work, partnering each year with artists to give back to the community.

The ‘Reve De Moi’ collaboration began with an introduction by a friend to Allan Kliger, a renowned photographer. Together they decided to start a project of black and white photography. The project gave them both the artistic freedom to express their unique vision through scenes in the Hollywood genre. “The girls selected for these scenes were not professional models, but rather girls who conveyed a strong persona and had the ability to act out an emotion in front of the camera, such as anger, confidence, jealousy, fear, vulnerability, passion, sadness, and rage,” explains Estelle.

The results were mind-blowing, at which point Estelle had an idea, “I thought: how do we create layers to our photography, and how do we create multidimensional photography? The answer was to bring on board artists.” She selected the artists carefully. Each had to have a unique style that would use the black and white photos they shot and create unique one-of-a-kind pieces. Estelle’s instinct and an eye for art were about to create a powerful partnership.

Estelle brought on board four of the most established artists in Canada to take the images and use them to create unique mixed media photography pieces in the individual style of each artist. Max Jamali, an artist who creates eccentric luxury art pieces, Peter Triantos, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist and Anthony Riccardi, a multidisciplinary artist who showcases internationally. any of us have a passion or a dream that may seem impossible to achieve - especially when we dare to dream sky high- yet sometimes we must make a commitment to our true passion to make things happen. Almost ten years ago, I made a monumental decision: to establish a new life in Canada as a mainstream jewelry expert. Perhaps I never would have left my luxurious and comfortable lifestyle as a Diamond Cruise Shopping Guide & TV Host had I not only believed in the opportunity but also my readiness to make the sacrifices to fulfil what I believed was my life’s mission. After quitting my job and landing in Canada, I knew I had to further my experience and knowledge in my field, even if this meant starting again from scratch. I got a job working long hours at a mall jewelry store counter and learning behind the scenes from the goldsmiths themselves. You can imagine I discovered it was not as glamorous as the rockstar career I had left behind on the cruise ship! And all while making minimum wage. True to my love of jewelry, I began dreaming of having my own brand as a jewelry designer even though I knew it would take time, determination, and a lot of work. Slowly but surely, I began to take steps to realize my dreams: I got a job doing corporate training for a well-known jewelry brand as an ambassador to Canada. This took me across the country, carrying a suitcase filled with training manuals, props, and a million dollars’ worth of jewelry. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to learn in-depth the art of jewelry making and the industry itself, even though this meant being away from my family and friends. I was constantly flying and driving all over Canada, battling snowstorms, working early mornings and long days and in high heels, no less!

Years later, I entered the world of home shopping on television here in Canada and the US, which turned out to be a natural next step. I discovered a new passion that gave me tremendous joy: selling jewelry on live television while also sharing the stories behind the gemstones. Today I can proudly say that I created my own brand. I now design jewelry for those very same women who used to come to the mall, events, or shopped on TV. Strong, successful women like me who know they deserve beautiful jewelry as a reward and a symbol of all their hard work. I now face the new challenge of creating a global brand, which once again requires the same hard work, determination, and persistence I have drawn from throughout my journey.

I encourage all of you across the world to follow your dreams! If you want it badly enough and are willing to work hard for it, I assure you that with love and passion, you can make the impossible possible.

won’t lie to you; obtaining and maintaining confidence can be challenging and incredibly uncomfortable, especially if you are used to hiding in the background. Recipe - 1 package of Savoiardi Italian cookies (ladyfingers) - 1 package of small, heavy whipping cream (whipped) - 12 ounces of sugar - 4 egg whites - ½ teaspoon of pure vanilla or hazelnut extract (optional) - 12 cups of espresso - 1 tub (475g) of Mascarpone cheese - cocoa powder (for dusting) Twist – crush chocolate bars and sprinkle over cake

Directions - Brew espresso coffee. Add a combination of liqueurs (coffee flavoured or enhancing liqueurs such as Grand Marnier, rum, or Bailey’s) and set aside in a bowl to bring to room temperature. - Beat egg whites with sugar until stiff - add vanilla extract if desired. Add mascarpone and whipping cream, mix by hand (do not beat with a blender). - Time to build the cake. Dip ladyfingers in coffee on both sides, quickly (do not over soak the cookies or they will be too soggy) and begin to layer in cake dish. Form a complete layer, then spread the mascarpone mixture over the cookies. Smooth it out evenly using a spatula or wooden spoon. Dust with cocoa powder over the mixture. Repeat steps to keep building and layering to the top. - Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Keep the eggs and mascarpone at room temperature before preparing and refrigerate overnight so the coffee can soak into the cake to heighten the palate. Tiramisu is the perfect dessert to make ahead. The popular colour trends for 2021 are following this change from gentle to intense. What we are seeing unveil is methodically placed vibrant colours on lighter bases. Taking the example of a deep violet ombre: the top was the darkest, and we would smudge the colour down through hair zone two and three and create a light silver colour, right? Not anymore.

What we will see in 2021 is that style techniques will utilize mirror images. Remember the mohawk? It is back!! For men, the bald fade mohawk is stealing the limelight, and for women, the long-centered mohawk provides both versatility and a warrior princess feel. From the center of the head, these styles are mirrored on each side, symbolizing domination and freedom.

Now we are chunking or piecing mood colours that are completely different from the rest of the hair colour. Quality Audio Nothing will make a person scroll past your content faster than low-quality audio. Use earphones with a built-in mic, or even order one that plugs directly into your preferred device. Clean Lighting To the window! Finding a lighting source when you are going to be on camera is a must. Look for a window that lets in bright natural light. Eye Line Oftentimes people look at their own image on the screen instead of looking into the camera when they are selftaping. Find a surface for your device that is level with your face. Then position yourself so you are looking straight ahead at your camera. Stacking a box under your computer for a little extra lift is always easy!

Background Appearance If you don’t want to be the next screenshot that goes viral for being sloppy, pick a clean background. Re-style a bookcase or sofa table with some of your favourite decor pieces and pop a plant in there, too. Fun fact, all of mine are fake! This will give a polished and humanized feel to your at-home shot, as opposed to your guest staring at you with a white wall or a messy bedroom.

I actually eat these foods, not because of the antioxidants, not just because they ward off cancer, but because I want great skin, glowing skin – amazing skin! There are also things I don’t eat, such as “gluten” or deep-fried foods, because I find they negatively affect my dermis. My vanity steps in when it comes to food. I want to control my skin tone (including acne), stave off wrinkles, and try to avoid looking like last night’s party. Instead of solely relying on face creams or doctors with needles to fix things, I proactively and diligently take care of myself, and that includes eating with purpose. In fact, I believe you can work on everything from the inside out, and the other stuff we do is just finishing touches. Think about it. In life, there are three scenarios where we conscientiously consider the optimal food intake: training for the Olympics, being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, or carrying a child (firstborn). When the stakes are high — when a gold medal or your life is on the line — it becomes easy to embrace the idea that healthy eating may make a difference; that fueling your body with the right types of foods could help you achieve extraordinary goals, and it may be important to avoid those that are counterproductive. But what about all the life scenarios in between? What if you are not training for the Olympics, facing an illness or pregnant? What about the thought of living your life to be the best and optimal ‘you,’ including consuming foods that enhance? Let’s take it one step further. What if you could eat to look even younger, clear your skin, and prepare your body for any of the enemies (fighting cancer, a pandemic)? Why wouldn’t you?

It is because there is always the naysayer in us. The one that says, “But, I want to enjoy my food,” or “It’s too much work,” or even, “When it comes to skin, I’ll just use a face cream.” First, this does not mean forfeiting great skin products; it is not one or the other. I wash, tone, and hydrate obsessively and diligently (I recommend Ultimage and Derma-V by Vivier). I also get regular facials (SilkPeels), and Botox and I have a close relationship. I absolutely feel that I need to look after my skin from the inside out. Second, eating healthy does not mean food has to taste like styrofoam or drywall. I love to cook, and I love to eat, but I consume foods that are good for me and my skin. Eating healthy does not require an onerous amount of skill, nor do you need a grocery sherpa to carry carts of food or track those healthy ingredients down. You just have to know what is good for you and find a way to consume those foods regularly and as close to the raw form as possible, and that does not mean you have to compromise taste.

Most people think of healthy eating as bland, challenging to make, or impossible to feel satisfied by something with the word ‘tofu.’ They also believe that broccoli or kale are foods you must force yourself to eat (or stuff in the back of your chair like my son, Chase, does), or that chicken tastes better in a deep-fried form or when you add sauces (like hoisin) for them to taste great. When you know how to prepare food in its purest form, you can have an extremely healthy diet that will do your body right and taste gourmet/amazing/ incredible. You can eat with purpose without compromising taste.

So if you want great skin, increase your intake of superfoods (broccoli, kale, blueberries, pomegranates, and astragalus root) in their purest form and don’t smother them with cream or deep fry the nutrients out. Consider the benefits of a diet that enhances your appearance. Look at what you love to eat and see if there is a way to get/make that food without the additives that may be counterproductive or prepared in a way that destroys the nutrients you are seeking. Having great skin is simpler than you think and ohso-delicious!

The Cheat. Ramen Noodles for Two without the Tertiary-bury Hydroquinone or Gluten

BBQ Shrimp in the Skillet Absolutely delicious, super easy tantalizes your BBQ craving and that BBQ flavour that just-hits-the-spot. Ingredients:

1 lb of raw large shrimp (Tails on - deveined) 3 Tbsp ketchup (I make my own) 1 Tbsp canola oil 1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar 1 1/2 Tbsp lemon Juice 1 Tbsp minced garlic 1 1/2 tsp chili powder 1 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp hot sauce (see recipe) Salt and pepper to taste Additional 1 Tbsp Canola oil for sautéing

1. Set shrimp aside. 2. Whisk all ingredients in a bowl (except 1 Tbsp oil). 3. Add the shrimp and toss. Let the shrimp marinate for 1/2 hour. 4. Heat the remaining tbsp oil in a large skillet. Add the coated shrimp and sauté - stirring and Turning the shrimp frequently. Cook until the shrimp are opaque and slightly white in colour. 5. Plate and serve (Chopped green onion garnish optional - lying the shrimp on a lounge chair with their own BBQ is also optional).

Note: Aside from some nutritional benefits of the mushroom-based broth, the only benefit of this recipe is getting the satisfaction of eating Ramen Noodles (which is a big benefit), without the food additive called Tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), a preservative that is a petroleum industry byproduct, sodium, calories and saturated fat (of the bad packaging)... it is a go to, a University staple, an affordable and delicious “filler food” ... satisfying pallets of all walks of life for decades ... it is the Kraft Dinner of Asian food and arguably easier to make. If you are going to eat Ramen Noodles, satisfy your craving with this healthier alternative....it may not be as much a “positive” contribution to your nutritional well-being, but it is (at least) not a negative one.

Ingredients: 1 1/2 tsp of fresh minced ginger 1 1/2 tsp of minced garlic 2 c of shiitake mushroom broth (I make my own by grinding dried mushrooms - add water to make 2 cups) 3/4 tbsp white miso (whisk this with 1/4c of the mushroom broth) in a bowl and set aside 1 tsp gluten-free soy sauce 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp chili paste 1/4 c packed green onions chopped (sliced thin and slanted) 2 oz of gluten-free Ramen Noodles

Instructions: 1. Cook Ramen noodles as instructed, rinse with cold water (so as not to overcook), drain and set aside. 2. Over medium heat, simmer the broth with the ginger and garlic (a few minutes), 3. Add the miso mixture you set aside. Stir. Simmer a few more minutes. 4. Add soy sauce, salt, chilli paste and 1/2 the green onions. Stir. Taste and adjust salt and chilli to taste. 5. Add the noodles, simmer three minutes. 6. Plate and garnish with remaining green onions.

Ingredients: 1.5 kg (approximately 30) organic chicken wings 2 Tbsp baking-powder 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp course grind black pepper

Sauce: 1 Tsp canola oil, 1 Tbsp minced ginger, 2 Tsp sweet chilli sauce, 2 Tbsp honey, 1/3 c. brown sugar, 1/3 c. Gluten-free soy sauce, 2 tsp lemon paste, 2 Tbsp minced garlic

Sticky, Crispy Asian Chicken Wings (did I say delicious?)

Sauce Instructions:

Place all ingredients into a saucepan - stir on medium heat until the sauce thickens. Set aside.

Instructions: 1. Preheat oven at 250 ° 2. Spread coated chicken onto a wire rack over baking sheet. 3. Place baking sheet on lower rack in the oven. Bake 30 minutes. 4. Turn oven to 425 ° and move the tray to the middle rack. 5. Bake 45 minutes then remove from oven and transfer to a bowl. 6. Heat sauce in saucepan. 7. Pour the sauce over the chicken and toss (the chicken will soak the hot, sticky sauce) . 8. Garnish with 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds and 1/4 c. chopped green onion. Happiness Gratitude is Having an Attitude of

ave you ever felt like things never seem to work out for you, and you have a grey cloud looming over your head that never seems to go away? Are there events outside your control that compound the problems you’re already facing at work and in your personal life that make you feel like you can’t catch a break? It can be easy for us to focus on the things that aren’t going well in our lives. It can also be a habit to commiserate with others about how terrible things are at work or at home, and how awful your boss, coworker, or partner is. Perhaps talking about negative things has even connected you with others who also want to focus on things that aren’t going well. It is the “Well, if you think that’s bad, listen to this” scenario, and the sad stories flow back and forth.

Take a moment to reflect on how your body feels after you engage in these types of negative conversations, and you’ll notice that you’re left feeling unmotivated, uncomfortable, unenergized, and uninspired. If you stop and take a moment to think about how you feel emotionally after you’ve spent time focusing on your disappointments, you might notice feelings of upset, anger, resentment, and frustration. Our body is letting us know that it is time to realign ourselves and spend time reflecting on what is going well in our lives. The more we recognize the blessings in our life, the happier and more fulfilled we will feel. Gratitude is directly correlated with happiness. “Gratitude is a Key to Happiness: Gratitude shows you that the grass beneath your feet is greener than you think. Gratitude teaches you that happiness is always now,” writes Dr. Robert Holden, the author of Happiness Now. The more grateful we are for everything in our life, the happier we feel inside. I make it a point every day to acknowledge and say thanks for the many blessings in my life. The opportunity to wake up and live another day is the most basic blessing and cannot be overlooked. The moment I open my eyes after a night’s sleep and am alive to experience another day, I am blessed. How many people would appreciate the opportunity to rise from their beds, healthy and pain-free, and begin living this new day? Every day is a fresh start. I have a body that is strong and allows me to move in many different ways, a mind that is intelligent and eager to learn new things, and a spirit that is serene and light. There are no ‘getting up on the wrong side of the bed’ mornings. If I have a few minutes before I rise from bed, I will meditate and set my intentions for the day. I set the intention to share my love with others and make a positive difference in the lives of the people I will touch that day. I plan to avoid negative people and situations that will draw my energy. Instead, I try to surround myself with people who make my spirits rise and help me feel good about myself and the work that I do. Some days I practice saying positive affirmations, repeating the ‘I am’ mantra and inserting the adjectives that I need to hear. ‘I am smart. I am healthy. I am beautiful. I am abundant. I am provided for. I am amazing.’ I also recite the words, “I expect miracles today.” This statement places trust in the Universe to show you miraculous things, things that you could not imagine happening to you that day. Other days I use the words, “Something amazingly awesome is going to happen to me today,” from Pam Grout’s book Thank and Grow Rich. These phrases set up the day for God, Spirit, the Angels, or whatever you like to call it, to show you miracles in your day.

The miracles in my day show up like this: I am blessed to have my family, the beautiful home we live in (that keeps me sheltered from the elements); the jobs I go to and where I will try to make a positive difference in any way I can; the food I have to nourish me and the clean water I have to drink; the amazing country I live in; and the beauty of mother nature. Being in nature is where miracles surround me, and I feel truly blessed. Whether it’s a purple sunset, a full moon, a field full of fireflies dancing in the night sky, gently falling snowflakes (where no two snowflakes are alike), the sound of the rain while sitting in my car, the warmth of the sun upon my skin, leaves changing colour in the fall resembling a rainbow, or a slow-moving, buzzing bumblebee searching for nectar in small white flowers on my lawn, I am in awe of the blessings of nature. These are moments where I stop what I am doing, I make a conscious effort to ‘be in the now’ and appreciate the beauty of God’s work that surrounds me. If we open our eyes, we can see the simplest of miracles. Happiness can be found in the appreciation of the synchronicity of all the small components in our Universe that make up the whole. We don’t have to go through hardship to appreciate the life we have, but often it is through sadness, loss, tragedy, illness, and other types of adversity that we realize the blessings we have in our lives, or even just what it means to be alive. In June 2013, my perspective on life changed forever when I lived through a natural disaster that made me realize things about life that I could not have understood before it happened. Driving home on a dirt road in the rain, I found myself in the path of a tornado. After trying to outrun the tornado by driving in reverse, I decided to stop my car and pray the debris that was falling all around me would miss my car. In a scene you could liken to from the movie A Wizard of Oz, no wreckage fell upon me, and my vehicle and I remained untouched. This terrifying experience changed my perspective on life forever. I now live each day with an appreciation to be alive. We do not know when we are going to die or how. That day on my way home, I could not have imagined what lay ahead of me on a trek I did every day, and it could have been my last. Our life can be cut short, even in an instant, by so many things. I want to live my days being grateful for everything that makes up my life. I now find myself thanking the Universe several times during the day for even the simplest of pleasures. Things such as finding a parking spot near the front door, dealing with helpful and kind people, or situations that could have gone badly but instead turn out in my favour.

Assign time each day to think about your blessings, big and small, and give thanks for their presence in your life. You might do this through mental reflection, while doing physical movement (such as yoga), or writing in a journal. At the end of the day, is when I make time for my gratitude practice. Every evening before I fall asleep, I recite all my blessings. I go through all the things I am grateful for as a way of telling the Universe that I want to invite more of what makes me happy into my life. Thinking about what you love and appreciate helps to attract more of these blessings into your future. Notice how you feel right after doing this practice.
