Avinu Malkeinu “Our Father, our King, we have no King but You.”
Avinu Malkeinu takes its place among the more memorable of High Holiday prayers. In this series of supplications, we direct our most vital collective wishes to “our Father, our King.” In the machzor, it appears on pages 152–154. Of its many verses, the following four bear upon Rosh Hashanah’s function as the time when our destiny for the upcoming year is determined:
.טֹובים ִ ּת ֵבנּו ְּב ֵס ֶפר ַחיִים ְ ָכ,ּנּו ָא ִבינּו ַמ ְל ֵכ .ִיׁשּועה ָ ּת ֵבנּו ְּב ֵס ֶפר ְג ֻא ָלה ו ְ ָכ,ּנּו ָא ִבינּו ַמ ְל ֵכ .ְכ ְל ָּכ ָלה ַ ָסה ו ָ ּת ֵבנּו ְּב ֵס ֶפר ַּפ ְרנ ְ ָכ,ּנּו ָא ִבינּו ַמ ְל ֵכ .ְכיֹות ֻ ּת ֵבנּו ְּב ֵס ֶפר ז ְ ָכ,ּנּו ָא ִבינּו ַמ ְל ֵכ Our Father, our King, inscribe us in the book of good life. Our Father, our King, inscribe us in the book of redemption and deliverance. Our Father, our King, inscribe us in the book of livelihood and sustenance. Our Father, our King, inscribe us in the book of merits.
