CHABAD-LUBAVITCH OF WINNIPEG JEWISH LEARNING CENTER

1845 MATHERS AVE. WINNIPEG, MB R3N 0N2  (204) 339-8737 WWW.CHABADWINNIPEG.ORG

THIS CALENDAR IS DEDICATED TO THE Dear Friend,

LUBAVITCHER REBBE O.B.M.,

RABBI MENACHEM M. SCHNEERSOHN

It is with great pleasure that we present you with this beautiful Jewish Art Calendar, featuring more than 50 local businesses, candle lighting times, a schedule of the Jewish holidays, and information on community programs and services. We hope you find it useful and enjoyable and that it serves as a catalyst for further pursuit of Jewish study and enriched experience of our heritage.

Throughout the Rebbe's leadership, he established more than 4,500 Jewish centers around the world. The Rebbe constantly emphasized how all the Jewish people are equal regardless of background, affiliation or level of observance. His personal devotion to each and every individual Jew and his love for the Holy Land, as well as his dedication to G-d and His Torah, continue to direct and inspire the Chabad Jewish Learning Centre here in Winnipeg., and throughout the world.

A clean, new, unmarked calendar always fills us with excitement. It signals the fullness of time yet to come; potential in its most concentrated form. Indeed, time is our most precious and fleeting commodity; making good use of our time is an ongoing challenge and privilege. At Chabad, we try our best to fill each day of the year with quality moments of spirituality and connection. We hope to make each day count and more importantly, make it a day that will resonate positively far into the future. We extend our thanks to the advertisers and sponsors of this calendar and to all of our supporters. With your continued assistance, we hope to strengthen, broaden and deepen the scope of our work. We wish you and your loved ones a blessed New Year in every respect. May you be inscribed for a year of life and may we all be blessed with a year of peace in the Holy Land and the world over!

3 Eggs 1 1/3 cups honey 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 cup strong black coffee 2 t. Baking powder 3 T. Margarine, softened 1 t. Baking soda 4 cups flour 1 t cinnamon Preheat oven to 325. Grease and flour (TIP: I like to use the "baking spray with flour") a 9 by 13-inch cake pan. In a large mixer bowl, beat eggs and honey together. Add sugar and mix again. Mix coffee with baking powder, and then add with margarine to the egg mixture. Add baking soda, flour, and cinnamon and beat together well. Pour into greased cake pan. Bake for an hour. PESACH

Matza Balls

2 eggs slightly beaten 2 tablespoons oil or Shmaltz (chicken fat) 2 tablespoons soup stock or water 1/2 cup matzah meal 1 teaspoon salt Beat eggs slightly with fork. Add other ingredients, except matzah meal, and mix. Add matzah meal gradually until thick. Stir. Refrigerate for 20 minutes in covered bowl. Wet hands and form into balls. Boil 1 Quart of water with 1 T salt. Drop the balls into bubbling water. Cook for 30 minutes. (8 balls per each 1/2 cup of matzah meal). Note: Many communities have the custom of not eating wetted matzah on the first seven days of Passover. In these communities, matzah balls and other recipes that use matzah are used only on the eighth day of Passover. SHAVUOS

Creamy Cheesecake

1 8 inch graham cracker crust 8 oz. cream cheese 8 oz. Cottage cheese 2 eggs 3/4 cups sugar 1 tsp, vanilla extract Pre heat oven to 350. Place the cream cheese, cottage cheese, eggs, sugar, and vanilla in a bowl. Using an electric mixer, blend at low speed. Eventually, as the ingredients blend, increase speed to high. Blend until smooth. Pour filling into graham cracker pan. TIP: For Marble cheese cake drizzle with chocolate syrup and gently swirl batter with a knife. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. TIP: When the cheesecake is ready, turn off the oven and leave the cheesecake inside for an additional half hour - this will avoid cracking the top.

ROSH HASHANA Among the famous Rosh Hashana prayers is Avinu Malkeinu, “Our Father, Our King”. It describes our unique relationship with G-d as two-fold. As our Father, G-d’s boundless love assures His forgiveness of our transgressions. Yet He is also an all–powerful King who sets rules meant to enable us to harness our energies for good. © Artwork by Sefira Lightstone www.sefiracreative.com

SHEVAT - ADAR

PRAYER Even while praying individually and establishing a personal relationship with G-d, we pray in the plural, beseeching Him to provide for “us”. More than requesting our personal needs, prayer teaches us to think beyond ourselves and consider our fellow Jew.

PURIM After the Jews’ salvation in the story of Purim, Esther requested that the events be recorded for future generations. As her miraculous story shows, no matter how grim or hopeless a situation may seem, G-d can save us in the blink of an eye.

SPLITTING OF THE SEA Just days after the Jews left Egypt, they found themselves caught between the strong Egyptian army behind them and the vast Sea of Reeds in front of them. Not knowing how to proceed, the Jews watched as Nachshon ben Aminadav heroically walked forward into the raging water, causing it to split. In a situation that we are unsure how to make it work, with no seemingly good options, we need to take hold of our faith and forge ahead, trusting that Hashem will be there for us.

SHAVUOT The holiday of Shavuot commemorates the day that we received the Torah. When G-d brought the Torah to Har Sinai, a cosmic change occurred in the world. Up until then, “what was above, remained above. And what was below, remained below.” The giving of the Torah on a physical mountain gave us the tools needed to infuse the physical world with holiness.

JUNE

SIVAN - TAMMUZ

THE KOTEL, WESTERN WALL In the months of Tammuz and Av we observe “The Three Weeks,” the mourning period which commemmorates the capture of Jerusalem and subsequent destruction of its Holy Temple. The midrash teaches that when Moshiach comes and rebuilds the third Temple, which will stand forever, these days will be transformed from ones of mourning to joy. On the site of ruins, construction can take place.

SHABBAT CANDLES Shabbat candles illuminate our home and brighten the world. In a spiritual sense, light enables us to clearly discern the uniqueness of each individual and singular contribution he or she offers the world. By fully noticing our fellow Jew and disregarding any superficial differences between us, we usher peace into the world.

THE SHOFAR The blowing of the shofar on rosh hashana is the sound of hope. When we hear it, our soul becomes full of hope for the final shofar blow that will come with the coming of Moshiach. In adition, the shofar blast reminds us to repent and re-kindle our connection to G-d so that we are ready to greet the Moshiach.
