Off the coast of Ecuador, on the Galapagos Islands, lived Elroy, the Iguana. Elroy had plenty of food and water and the perfect spots to sunbathe, but he wasn’t happy. What Elroy wanted most in the world was a girlfriend.
Cerca de la costa del Ecuador, en las Islas Galápagos, vivía Elroy, la iguana. Elroy tenía suficiente comida y agua, y los lugares perfectos para asolearse. Sin embargo, no estaba feliz. Lo que más deseaba en el mundo era una novia.
One day, he saw the graceful blue-footed boobies dancing with their feet, flashing brilliant blue all around. “Surely, if I could dance like that, I would attract a female,” Elroy thought. But as hard as he tried, his feet couldn’t do the dance of the blue-footed boobies. Perhaps it was because they weren’t blue at all. Un día, se encontró con la graciosa danza de los piqueros de patas azules. Con cada movimiento lanzaban cerúleos destellos por doquier. “Si pudiera bailar así, seguramente atraería a una chica”, pensó Elroy. Pero, por más que lo intentaba, sus patas no lograban imitar aquella danza; tal vez, porque no eran azules.
Looking around the beach, Elroy saw the elegant large male flamingos trying to impress their ladies. They marched up and down the beach, doing dramatic head turns, puffing up their feathers and preening themselves to perfection.
Mirando alrededor de la playa, Elroy encontrĂł a los elegantes flamingos macho tratando de impresionar a sus hembras. Marchaban de arriba a abajo, haciendo movimientos de cabeza muy dramĂĄticos, sacudiendo sus plumas y embelleciĂŠndose hasta quedar perfectos.
Elroy tried to do the march, but it didn’t seem to be as regal as the flamingos’ and was slowed down by his long tail. Every time he tried to do a quick head turn, he immediately became dizzy and had to rest for a while. Seeing that this method wasn’t going to help him attract a girlfriend, he decided to change his strategy. Elroy quizo imitar la marcha, pero no logró hacerlo con la majestuosidad de los flamingos. Su larga cola lo entorpecía y, cada vez que intentaba girar su cabeza rápidamente, se mareaba y debía descansar por un momento. Al darse cuenta de que este método no le ayudaría a atraer a una novia, decidió cambiar su estrategia.
When he approached some trees, he saw the old and wise Galapagos tortoises. “Surely,” he thought, “some of the most ancient creatures on these islands would be able to give me some advice.” As he watched, he saw the males attracting the females by bobbing their heads and bellowing loudly. Cuando se acercó a unos árboles, Elroy encontró a las viejas y sabias tortugas terrestres. “Sin duda”, pensó, “algunas de las criaturas más antiguas de estas islas podrán darme un consejo”. Al mirarlas, notó que los machos atraían a las hembras balanceando su cabeza y emitiendo fuertes bramidos.
Elroy threw open his mouth hoping that the same wondrous noise would come out, but it did not. Unfortunately, a hideous squeak came out which scared away his wee finch friend who had come to remove some ticks from his back. “I guess that won’t help,” he thought and moved away from the tortoises. Elroy abrió su boca al máximo, esperando escuchar aquel maravilloso sonido, pero no lo consiguió. Desafortunadamente, emitió un terrible chillido que espantó a su amigo, el pequeño pinzón que había llegado a remover algunas garrapatas de su lomo. “Supongo que esto no ayudará”, pensó y se alejó de las tortugas terrestres.
Next, he saw the magnificent sea lions strutting (as much as a sea lion can strut) amongst their harems. They bragged and fought amongst themselves. “Perhaps if I appear big and strong, the girls might be impressed,” he thought, “although I only want one girl.” Luego, miró a los magníficos leones marinos caminando con orgullo (tanto como un león marino puede caminar) entre sus harenes. Alardeaban y peleaban entre ellos.
“Tal vez, si aparento ser grande y fuerte, las chicas se impresionarán”, pensó Elroy, “aunque solo quiero una chica”.
But, try as he might drawing himself up to his full height and puffing out his cheeks and chest, none of the marine iguanas noticed. They were lying on the rocks trying to catch the last sun rays. Pese a que se levantó con mucho esfuerzo para verse más alto y engrandeció sus mejillas y pecho, ninguna de las iguanas marinas lo notó. Yacían en las rocas cerca de la playa, capturando los últimos rayos del sol.
Gloomily, he sat alone watching the sunset and chewing on a prickly pear cactus. “I will never find a girlfriend,” he thought bitterly. “I will forever be alone.” Just then he heard a lovely voice.
Triste y solo, se sentó a mirar el atardecer mientras masticaba un cactus espinoso. “Nunca encontraré una novia”, pensó amargamente. “Estaré solo por siempre”. Justo en aquel momento, escuchó una dulce voz.
“What are you doing here all alone?” The voice asked. Elroy turned and saw the most beautiful iguana he had ever seen. “Well, I can’t seem to attract a girlfriend,” he answered. “I tried to dance like the blue-footed boobies, march like the flamingos, bellow like the tortoises and act big and strong like the sea lions, but nothing has worked.” “Do you really think that? To me you are the most interesting iguana in this whole place. I’m Gaby and I would love to know you better.” And there they sat, both happy and content in their own iguana way.
—¿Qué haces aquí tan solo? —preguntó la voz. Elroy dio la vuelta y se encontró con la iguana más guapa que había visto jamás. —Bueno… no consigo atraer a una novia —respondió—. Intenté bailar como los piqueros de patas azules, marchar como los flamingos, bramar como las tortugas terrestres y parecer grande y fuerte como los leones marinos, pero nada funcionó. —¿De verdad piensas eso? Para mí eres la iguana más interesante de este lugar. Soy Gaby y me encantaría conocerte mejor. Y allí permanecieron juntos, felices y contentos como iguanas al sol.

I was born in 1989 in New Plymouth, New Zealand. Although I now live and teach ESL in Ecuador. I studied Zoology and Physiology and love adventure, nature and knitting. I have always enjoyed writing about things that are important to me such as wildlife and ecology. I believe in bringing people closer to these subjects through literature.
I was born in 1986 in Quito, Ecuador. From an early age my passions have been nature and the arts, which has led me to become a biologist, educator, illustrator and musician. I have written a book and illustrated a bunch for some Ecuadorian publishing houses, including Chacana. I believe books to be teachers and a great source of inspiration.
Nací en 1989 en New Plymouth, Nueva Zelanda. Ahora vivo y enseño Inglés en Ecuador. Estudié Zoología y Fisiología. Amo la aventura, la naturaleza y tejer. Siempre he disfrutado de escribir acerca de la vida silvestre y la conservación. Creo que se puede acercar al público a estos temas a través de la literatura.
Nací en 1986 en Quito, Ecuador. Desde pequeña he sentido pasión por la naturaleza y las artes, lo que me ha llevado a desarrollarme como bióloga, educadora, música e ilustradora.
