Saving the Winter Welcome to Tahoe! We hope your visit to our mountain communities and ski resorts brings you delight, excitement and stress-free moments, in whatever percentages are perfect for you. To help you find that balance, this guide showcases a wide range of Tahoe winter activities and visitor options, plus great restaurants, shops and services. During these unprecedented times, Tahoe’s communities are asking visitors to respect the wishes of front-line restaurant, lodging and service workers by adhering to business’ mask and social distancing requirements. Please be patient with special rules and restrictions at ski resorts this winter. Our businesses are only following local regulations; everyone’s goal is the preservation of a full winter season for all who love to visit and play in Tahoe’s mountains. COVID-19 is only part of the unprecedented world we’ve faced in 2020. We are undeniably seeing long-predicted effects of manmade pollution on climate change, including record temperatures and wildfires in California, and record hurricanes hitting the Gulf Coast. Manmade climate change is also a very real threat to the quality and length of Tahoe’s ski seasons. Predictions are that we’ll continue to experience some great, snowy months, but if global warming continues, we’ll experience less snowy months in future years. (We hope when you read this Mother Nature is making 2020–21 a great and snowy winter.) Many in the Tahoe community have long expressed deep concern about manmade climate change, particularly the scientists at Tahoe Environmental Research Center, a University of California Davis facility in Incline Village. These researchers have been monitoring rising water temperature in Lake Tahoe and documenting how it threatens the lake’s famed water clarity. On the activist-side, renowned Truckee snowboarder, Jeremy Jones, is the founder of Protect Our Winters (POW), a non-profit organization raising awareness of manmade climate change among outdoor lovers across the country. Climate Arts is another Tahoe-based non-profit, supporting creative ways to discuss climate change issues and solutions. We wish you, your family and friends an extremely enjoyable stay in Tahoe. Thank you in advance for doing your part to keep our communities and businesses safe. After you take-in the beauty and serenity of the Sierra Nevada mountains, we hope you carry that connection to the natural world home with you. Working in partnership with nature, we can slow and then reverse the climate changes we’re now experiencing, saving Tahoe’s snowy winters, and clear waters, for ourselves and our descendents. Tahoe’s Greatest Winter Hits Vacation highlights and excursions Olympic Valley/Village at Squaw Valley This scenic mountain valley is home to both Squaw Valley Ski Resort—site of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games—and Resort at Squaw Creek. The ski resort’s pedestrian village has a unique variety of shops, restaurants, bars and outdoor seating near firepits; COVID-19 may restrict indoor access to businesses and sightseeing rides on Squaw’s aerial tram this winter. Weather permitting, Resort at Squaw Creek offers dog sled rides, cross-country skiing and (during most winters) ice skating. Squaw Valley ski resort has announced it will change its name in 2021 due to “squaw” being now widely seen as disrespectful to Native American women.
Heavenly Village/Stateline Heavenly Village and the four nearby Stateline casino towers are Tahoe’s nucleus of man-made fun. Shops and dining spots line both sides of Highway 50, all linked by wide sidewalks and open areas. During a normal winter, Heavenly Village offers ice skating and sightseeing rides on an incredibly scenic aerial gondola, carrying passengers up to 9,123-foot elevation. Check ahead for current COVID-19 restrictions on gondola rides, or Heavenly’s scenic tram rides from its Ski Run base area. WINTER/SPRING 2020/21 | Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide 11

Tahoe City/Truckee River Outlet State Park
This 1860s silver boomtown is remarkably well-preserved, with wooden boardwalks fronting its downtown shops and “watering holes.” The high-desert drive to and from the town complete the Old West journey.
Tahoe City has a delightful network of sidewalks and bike paths overlooking the lake with an assortment of one-of-akind shops, restaurants, bars and the Truckee River Outlet State Park, where a dam controls the top six feet of the lake. The park’s Gatekeeper Museum and its Native American basket collection were open to visitors at press time, with COVID-19 restrictions.
Kirkwood/Hope Valley Highways 89 and 88 lead south from Tahoe through scenic Hope Valley to Kirkwood ski resort atop the Sierra Crest. Hope Valley is popular for snowmobiling and snowshoeing.
Downtown Truckee/Donner Memorial State Park Truckee’s charming, “Old West” downtown is bisected by the Transcontinental Railroad and the Truckee River. The historic buildings house a wide variety of quality restaurants, shops, galleries and brew pubs. Donner Memorial State Park is less than three miles to the west, its museum telling the stories of the infamous Donner Party and other Western pioneers.
Mt. Rose Highway Scenic Viewpoint A short drive above Incline Village on Nevada Highway 431 is a scenic pull-off with unobstructed views of the Lake Tahoe Basin, its parking spots often cleared in winter. The highway heads north from there, traversing a 8,911 foot elevation pass.
Emerald Bay One of the most photographed spots on earth, Emerald Bay is like a Norwegian fjord surrounded by steep mountainsides, dotted with an island topped by a stone tea house. Parking can be extremely limited in winter, however, with this stretch of Highway 89 also closed for multiple days after large storms.

SKI RESORTS
Ski & Ride Nirvana
Tahoe’s 14 ski resorts are each refreshingly unique. Tahoe has the largest concentration of ski areas in America, including huge resorts that encompass multiple peaks and dozens of super-efficient ski lifts. Tahoe’s “large” resorts each have enough terrain to satisfy advanced skiers and riders for multiple days. But they also have the most expensive day passes and thousands of season passholders who, this COVID-19 winter, could potentially restrict day lift ticket sales on busy days. Tahoe’s “medium” resorts are big enough to be popular with local residents, who tend to be midweek, non-holiday season pass holders and, therefore, don’t limit day pass sales during busy periods. Young families and beginners may find Tahoe’s “small” resorts the right call. They have few season pass holders and generally less-expensive day passes.
Large SQUAW VALLEY / ALPINE MEADOWS 42 Lifts—6,000 acres A premier American winter resort and expert mecca, with multiple mountains of terrain for all abilities. “Squaw-pine” is an epic expert experience of steeps, bowls and cliffs. Surprisingly, the beginner experience can also be epic, with easy runs at the top of Squaw’s aerial tram and adjacent to both resorts’ base areas. A joint lift pass and free shuttle bus presently connect the two ski areas. Next winter, a new gondola might stretch between them, and Squaw Valley plans to re-name itself.
HEAVENLY MOUNTAIN 28 Lifts—4,800 acres Huge winter resort with much to offer every ability. Heavenly is a two-state experience, with 34 miles of wide intermediate trails and some of the most spectacular views in the ski world. The resort has four entry points; Heavenly Village gondola and California Main Lodge lifts are the two most commonly used. There are beginner runs atop both. Heavenly boasts the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and Tahoe’s highest summit elevation.
NORTHSTAR CALIFORNIA 20 Lifts—3,170 acres Excellent grooming on a full array of trails, plus high-end parks and services. Aiming to be the luxury resort of Tahoe skiing, Northstar caters to guests and owners of its

surrounding properties, and others willing to pay for extra conveniences and services. The ski terrain is excellent for most all abilities, featuring long, well-groomed trails. Experts have Lookout Mountain steeps and multiple terrain parks.
KIRKWOOD MOUNTAIN 15 Lifts—2,300 acres One of America’s deepest average snow-packs. Kirkwood is a big mountain with entertaining terrain for beginners-to-experts. The drive from South Lake Tahoe is a scenic, 40- to 60-minutes under most winter road conditions, which helps limit crowds during some busy periods. Kirkwood’s high elevations and location atop the Sierra Crest often give it Tahoe’s deepest natural snowpack.
SIERRA-AT-TAHOE 14 Lifts—2,000 acres Varied terrain, excellent tree skiing and parks. Straddling the Sierra Crest off Interstate 50, Sierra is a favorite of South Tahoe locals, including Olympic champion snowboarders. The resort features well-groomed, lower to upper intermediate runs, excellent terrain parks and half-pipe, plus wonderful, expert tree skiing and challenging bump-lines.
SUGAR BOWL 13 Lifts—1,650 acres Convenient location, scenic trails for all abilities, deep average snowpack. Located on the Sierra Crest only 10-minutes from Interstate 80, Sugar Bowl often boosts excellent snow conditions. The resort’s 3 peaks are connected by fun trails, particularly for intermediate to advanced abilities. Excellent beginner terrain is located next to Judah base lodge.
Medium
8 Lifts—1,200 acres Diverse variety of terrain and high elevation. Mt. Rose is a short, 25 to 30-minute drive from Reno, making it a popular season pass for the city’s many devoted skiers and snowboarders. The resort’s high elevation at times gives it some of Tahoe’s best ski conditions, or leave its runs exposed to high storm winds. The resort’s beginner terrain is outstanding. The “Chutes” are seriously-steep expert runs.
DIAMOND PEAK 7 Lifts—655 acres Family-oriented, impressive views and advanced terrain. Incline Village’s community ski resort features some of Tahoe’s greatest winter views. Beginner runs are located next to the parking lot. Intermediate to advanced skiers ride the Crystal Express lift to long trails and 360-degree panoramas. Diamond Peak also has extensive snowmaking capabilities.
BOREAL MOUNTAIN 8 Lifts—380 acres Magnet for freestyle snowboarders and skiers, with lights at night. Located directly off Interstate 80 on Donner Summit, Boreal delivers big fun for freestyle snowboarders and skiers in numerous terrain parks and a half-pipe. Most of the slopes are lit at night and covered by snowmaking. Boreal also has wide beginner slopes and a separate tubing/snow play area.
Small DONNER SKI RANCH 8 Lifts—500 acres Fun intermediate runs high on the Sierra Crest. A small resort with a surprising variety of intermediate trails, usually-inexpensive lift pass, and convenient location off Interstate 80.
SODA SPRINGS 3 Lifts—200 acres Fun for beginner to lower intermediate ability. A short drive off Interstate 80, Soda Springs sports a variety of beginner and intermediate runs off its one peak, plus a popular snow play area.
TAHOE DONNER
HOMEWOOD MOUNTAIN 8 Lifts—2,010 acres Incredible views and relaxed atmosphere. Located just off Highway 89 on Tahoe’s West Shore, the resort’s lower elevation can often protect its runs from storm winds. It becomes a liability, however, during warmer winters. Homewood’s parking is conve16 WINTER/SPRING 2020/21 | Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
4 Lifts—120 acres Neighborhood hill, fun for young families. Ski hill for the Tahoe Donner development, located just above Truckee, the resort caters to beginners and young families.
GRANLIBAKKEN 2 Lifts—74 acres Cost-effective beginner and family spot. This hotel/lodge features an adjacent snow play and ski hill open to the public. Granlibakken is conveniently located outside Tahoe City.

Backcountry
[Also– Skinning, splitboard, mountaineering] The experience of the Tahoe backcountry in winter is defined by the abundance or lack of snow. Early in the winter, the mountains might be mostly snowfree but also full of puddles and muddy meadows that are environmentally sensitive to human footprints. Once a protective layer of snow falls and condescends into a solid pack, check current conditions with SierraAvalanche Center.org or their Facebook page. Venturing into the mountains outside ski resort boundaries during winter carries inherent risks. Experienced, avalanche-trained backcountry skiers, snowboarders and mountaineers travel throughout the Sierra during normal winters. In spring, when afternoons get warmer, south-facing mountain slopes go through multi-day, melt-freeze cycles that create a relatively solid snowpack, with lovely cornsnow conditions possible on mornings after freezing nights. 20 WINTER/SPRING 2020/21 | Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
But when temperatures get too warm during the day, wetslide avalanches can be a danger on these slopes. Stop by one of the area’s excellent mountaineering stores for more info and insight: Backcountry in Truckee; Alpenglow in Tahoe City; and Sierra Ski & Cycle Works, South Lake Tahoe.
Beaches A walk
along one of the public stretches of Lake Tahoe can be incredibly scenic during winter…, and require snowshoes. Beaches along the lake’s east and north shores will begin to clear of snow in lateMarch. By mid-April, sun-n-sand seekers can find stretches of dry beach at Kings Beach State Recreation Area and nearby Moon Dunes and at Commons Beach in Tahoe City. Pebble beaches that are also open to dogs include Carnelian Bay and Hurricane Bay on the West Shore. When it is cleared of snow, a scenic three-mile bike path leads from Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park passing a number of scenic coves. Be aware that the lake water is extremely cold, even on warm spring days! The surface temperature throughout winter and spring usually hovers in the mid-40 degrees F,

red-tail hawk or even a bald eagle in Tahoe’s skies. Ravens are active throughout winter, including at high elevations. Flocks of Canadian geese also winter in the region. The start of spring is heralded by the mountain chickadee, whose call sounds to some like “cheeseburger.”
Bike Paths [Also– Cruisers, E-bikes] After winter storms, Tahoe’s miles of paved bike paths are popular for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Communities begin clearing snow from many paths in mid-spring, but icy patches can remain in April and into May or develop after storms. Pedestrians and dog-walkers share all of Tahoe’s paved paths, so warn them before passing on a speeding bike. South Lake Tahoe has an excellent network of bike paths that extend west to parks and lakeshore. Incline Village’s new path to Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park has stunning views and accesses several small coves. Tahoe City is the center of over 19 miles of connected bike path, including the popular route along the Truckee River to Squaw Valley and the 12-mile journey down the West Shore to Sugar Pine Point State Park and Meeks Bay. Truckee’s network of paths includes the Legacy Trail, a lovely, 4.4-mile walk or ride along the Truckee River.

Bird Watching
In spring and fall, wetlands in the Upper Truckee River, Carson Valley and Little Truckee River host a wide variety of a migratory birds. Year around, you might spot an osprey,
See “Gambling.”
CrossCountry Skiing [Also–
Skate-skiing, skinny skiing, Classic skiing] The Tahoe region has the highest concentration of cross-country ski resorts and groomed trails in the country. State-of-the-art grooming machines create miles of grooved lanes for classic technique (or “striding”) side-by-side with smooth surfaces ideal for “skate skiing.” Advances in skate ski equipment and technique have given the sport a new speed and excitement, attracting many downhill skiers to the sport. Royal Gorge is the nation’s largest cross-country ski area with approximately 90 miles of trails. Expansive networks are also found at Tahoe XC near Tahoe City, Tahoe Donner and WINTER/SPRING 2020/21 | Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide 21

Cruises
Weather permitting, M.S. Dixie II in Zephyr Cove departs daily throughout the winter on round-trip voyages into Emerald Bay.
Dining
See “Dining Directory” on page 30. Call ahead or check restaurant website for updated COVID-19 restrictions.
Disc Golf
Most of Tahoe’s “Frisbee golf” courses run through forests and therefore hold snow well into April. But if the snowpack isn’t deep, throw on snowshoes and slide your disc for distance. Entertaining courses are found at North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista, Incline Village, South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.
Dog Walks and Swims
If your dog has never seen snow, you both might be in for a treat. Many dog breeds love bounding and tunneling through fresh powder, producing endless Instagram images! Long-haired breeds can develop snowballs that stick on their bellies and legs, especially in new snow. Bring a towel, and a thermos with warm water, but still expect melt afterwards inside a heated car or house. A swim in Lake Tahoe will melt snowballs, but some beaches are inaccessible in deep snow. Ones that allow dogs include Kiva Beach in South Tahoe, Zephyr Cove on East Shore, Coon Street in Kings Beach, Patton Beach in Carnelian Bay, and Hurricane Bay on the West Shore. Near Truckee, trails accessible by mid-spring often include Truckee River Legacy trail and Donner Memorial State Park.
Drinking
Breweries throughout Tahoe and Reno produce award-winning “suds,” served up in brew pubs or in taprooms pouring beer from around the world. Local favorites include Fifty/Fifty, Tahoe Mountain Brewing, Tahoe Cold Water, Alibi Ale and Great Basin. For delicious and creative cocktails, head to The Pioneer Cocktail Club in Tahoe City.
22 WINTER/SPRING 2020/21 | Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
Call ahead or check business website for updates on any restrictions or changes in operation due to COVID-19.
Driving
During big Tahoe winters, consider not driving at all. Transit systems run throughout the season in Tahoe/ Truckee communities, including ski resort shuttles from many locations. If the roads are clear, it’s a 72-mile drive around Lake Tahoe. Be aware that few cleared parking spots exist for long stretches around the lake. Lakeside public parking is cleared after storms in Kings Beach and Tahoe City with plentiful parking available around South Tahoe’s casino core. Nevada road crews try to keep parking spots plowed at the Mt. Rose Highway Scenic Viewpoint above Incline Village and near the summit of Highway 431 in Tahoe Meadows.
Fishing
[Also– Charters] Some charter fishing boats take clients out on the lake on calmer winter days. Tahoe’s famously large Mackinaw Trout are still active in the lake’s depths.
Freestyle Parks [Also–
Terrain parks, halfpipes, rails, kickers] Most of Tahoe’s downhill ski areas have terrain features or parks of some size. Resorts known for the variety, size and creativity of their parks and features include: Boreal Mountain, Northstar California, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Squaw Valley.
Gambling
[Also– Arcades] Stateline in South Tahoe is home to the region’s famous, large casino towers— Harrah’s, Harveys, MontBleu and Hard Rock Hotel—all adjacent to each other. All feature 24-hour slots and table games, plus entertainment, dining and lodging. At the Nevada state line in North Tahoe, Crystal Bay has 3 smaller casinos, plus the Hyatt in Incline Village. On the Nevada-side of Tahoe, you’ll also find slots and digital gaming at some bars and restaurants. The casinos also have the best arcades in the area, large rooms of cutting-edge games like those found at Hard Rock and Harveys. Operations and capacities were limited in most casinos at press-time due to COVID-19. Check casino websites for updates on any current restrictions.
Gliding
[Also– Hang gliding, ultra-lights] Weather allowing, commercial glider plane and powered hang glider rides operate during winter months, taking clients on scenic adventures over Lake Tahoe and surrounding peaks. Glider flights are available from Truckee and Minden airports, powered gliders depart from Carson City Airport. Reservations are usually required.
PHOTO COURTESY OF DIAMOND PEAK SKI RESORT
Northstar resorts near Truckee, and Kirkwood, south of Lake Tahoe. Some operations may be limited or adjusted due to COVID-19 restrictions. During normal winters, cross-country track systems are also groomed at North Tahoe Regional Park, Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Granlibakken resort and Camp Richardson. Those wanting to explore forests or mountain meadows on traditional cross-country skis, wider Classic models provide more buoyance in fresh snow. “Wax-less” scales (or skins attached to the bottom) make climbing easier. For equipment information and rentals, look to the shops listed in the “Backcounty” entry above or a Tahoe Dave’s location in North Tahoe.

TAHOE INFO
Lake Tahoe and Truckee golf courses are closed throughout winter and into spring. The first courses to open in spring, or stay open during dry winter months, are in and around Carson Valley and Reno, an hour to 90-minute drive from most Tahoe communities.
Ice Skating
Outdoor skating rinks are usually open during the winter months at Heavenly Village, Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, Truckee River Regional Park, Northstar, Kirkwood, and at the top of Squaw Valley’s tram. At press-time, it was unclear what affect COVID-19 might have on some or all of the rinks. Call or check websites to confirm operations. Indoor, South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena is an excellent facility with an NHL-sized rink but was not open to public skating at press time. Visit www.tahoearena.co for updates.
Museums
At press-time, most museums in the Tahoe region were open with COVID-19 restrictions, including Donner Emigrant Trail Museum outside Truckee and Gatekeepers Museum in Tahoe City. The Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village will not open this winter but plans to re-open later in 2021. Other quality museums in the region include Nevada Museum of Art and National Auto Museum in Reno, Nevada Museum and Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City, and tours and museums in Virginia City.
Photography
Emerald Bay and Old Highway 40 above Donner Lake are Tahoe’s classic winter vistas, the latter a favorite of national car commercials. The overlook on Nevada Highway 431 above Incline Village has gorgeous views. Heavenly gondola and Squaw Valley tram are both memorable rides to spectacular vistas, in all normal winters available for sightseers, but perhaps not this COVID-19 winter at area ski resorts. At press time, M.S. Dixie was scheduling daily cruises to Emerald Bay from Zephyr Cove. Scenic road trips include the historic silver mining boomtown of Virginia City and high desert landscapes at Pyramid Lake and Black Rock Desert.
Rock Climbing [Also– Bouldering, climbing gyms] During prolonged breaks in winter weather, south facing rock walls may dry enough to entice climbers, especially on sunny afternoons, though the approach may include a tromp through some snow. Tahoe’s most popular climbing destinations are Donner Summit off Old Highway 40 near Truckee, Lover’s Leap, off Highway 50 near Echo Summit, and Emerald Bay. Indoor climbing gyms include 24 WINTER/SPRING 2020/21 | Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide
High Altitude Fitness in Incline Village and Blue Granite Climbing in South Lake Tahoe.
Ropes Courses [Also– Adventure parks,
ziplines] Weather-permitting, Tahoe Treetop Adventure parks are open winter days at one or more of its 3 locations: Tahoe Vista, Squaw Valley and Granlibakken Resort. At press-time, Treetop was implementing restrictions due to COVID-19. Call ahead for information and reservations.
Scenic Rides
[Also– Aerial tram, gondola lift] The Heavenly ski resort gondola and Squaw Valley’s aerial tram are both spectacular experiences that, in normal winters, offer a one-ride ticket. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, these sightseeing tickets may not be available on busy winter days. Call ahead for updates.
Ski and Snowboard Resorts
Turn back to “Ski and Board Nirvana,” starting on page 17, for resort descriptions and statistics.
Shopping
Boutiques, art galleries, gift and souvenirs shops can be found in many Tahoe communities. Sidewalks between shops are cleared of snow on most winter days in Downtown Truckee, Heavenly Village/Stateline, Tahoe City, Incline Center and Kings Beach. Turn to page 36 in our Directory for more information.
Snowmobiling
Go for a spin around a groomed circuit at one of two snowmobile rental locations in South Shore. Or join a tour into the mountain peaks above Zephyr Cove or the summit of Highway 267, traveling to spectacular lake views. Snowmobile tours and rentals are also offered at various North Tahoe locations, including mini-snowmobiles at Squaw Valley’s SnoVentures family zone. Call ahead for reservations and updates on COVID-19 restrictions.
Snowplay
[Also– Sledding, tubing, snow creations] Snow-tubing hills with snow-play zones are found at a number of Tahoe ski resorts, including Boreal Mountain, Kirkwood, Squaw Valley, and Granlibakken, as well as Tahoe City Winter Sports Park and Hansen’s Resort, South Lake Tahoe. Unofficial sledding and tubing spots exist on public land at: Kahle Park and Van Sickle Bi-State Park, South Tahoe; North Tahoe Regional Park; Incline Village Snow Play Area; just south of Tahoe City off Highway 89; Sugar Pine Point State Park; Tahoe Meadows

near the summit of NV Highway 431; and just west of the mid-town freeway off-ramp in Truckee. Be aware that sledding and snow-tubing outside organized areas carries risk of injury or worse from impact with trees, rocks and other sledders. You are responsible for the safety of yourself, family members and potentially others. Practice good sense and keep the day fun!
Snowshoeing
Snowshoes are widely available for rent at shops around the region. Lightweight and strong, they allow exploring of the largely level forests and meadows around Lake Tahoe. Poles are recommended for stability. For more secure grip when climbing or descending gentle slopes, look for versions with larger metal “claws” below the balls of your feet. Only specialized mountaineering snowshoes are appropriate for climbing or descending steeper mountain slopes!
Surfing Winter storm winds create 2- to 4-foot waves in Tahoe Vista and Kings Beach, a surprising number of surfers and kayakers head out into the bone-chilling cold. They wear thick wetsuits, hoods, and usually gloves and booties, with perhaps a large thermos of hot water (or something hot) waiting in the car. Well-neoprene-d Tahoe locals have been surfing these fall and winter waves for decades, but don’t take that as a recommendation to try it! Swimming
[Also– Open-water] Or are you a crazy sort looking to notch a “polar bear swim?” Even a few seconds in Lake Tahoe’s dangerously cold water in winter can create an ice-cream headache that will last much longer. A few zealots claim to swim in Lake Tahoe year around without a wetsuit. Even with a wetsuit, a few minutes in Lake Tahoe’s winter water can lead to life-threatening hypothermia. There are excellent indoor public pools in South Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Incline Village, but their operations were limited at press time. Check ahead to learn if reservations are required.

COMMUNITIES
Tahoe/Reno’s Diverse Towns SOUTH TAHOE This bi-state community encompasses blocks to either side of 18 miles of highways 50 and 89, with the concentration of visitor attractions close to the state border: Heavenly Village and its ski gondola, and Hard Rock, Harrah’s, Harveys and Mont Bleu casino/hotel towers. Sidewalks are usually cleared from the casinos to Heavenly Village and surrounding shopping and dining.
NORTH TAHOE Small resort towns dot Lake Tahoe’s north and west shores. Gambling is legal in Incline Village and nearby casinos at the Nevada state border. Sidewalks are cleared in Kings Beach and Tahoe City, both towns with a variety of unique shops and restaurants, plus great lake views. Squaw Valley Ski Resort and its base village are approximately 7 miles from Tahoe City.
TRUCKEE Truckee is an historically significant Old West frontier town, Intercontinental Railroad depot, and pioneering winter sports resort. Many downtown Truckee buildings are over 100 years old and now house quality shops, boutiques, restaurants and art galleries. Northstar ski resort is 6 miles to the east.
RENO Downtown Reno includes 3 well-known casinos now interconnected as The Row, plus the Riverwalk District’s shops and dining. Reno’s Mid-Town is an eclectic shopping and dining destination. Other Reno casino/hotels include Atlantis, Grand Sierra and the Nugget. City attractions include the Nevada Museum of Art and National Auto Museum.
CARSON CITY/CARSON VALLEY Carson City is the state capital and home to the Nevada State Museum and Nevada Railroad Museum. Wide Carson Valley has dramatic vistas and the towns Minden/Gardnerville and Genoa, the latter Nevada’s oldest settlement.
VIRGINIA CITY The site of the historic Comstock Lode silver strike, Virginia City thrived from 1860 to 1875. Now the well-preserved downtown of shops, restaurants, saloons and churches, connected by wooden walkways, give visitors a wonderful look into the Old West.
