Letters from the College I am pleased to present to you the 2016-2017 issue of Got Culture? a schedule of music, dance, performance, and visual art events at Chaffey College. The School of Visual and Performing Arts features excellent faculty and staff, and the school presents outstanding exhibitions, productions, and events. Many, but not all feature student talent and those that do not offer our students and communities the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field. Please join us at these free or low-priced events and support emerging talent in the region. We welcome you. Henry D. Shannon, Ph.D. Superintendent/President

Chaffey College prides itself on offering students multiple ways to develop their talents, and the visual and performing arts programs – supported by dedicated faculty and excellent facilities – are integral to the college’s mission. The events described here provide opportunities for our students to share what they have learned and what they have accomplished with the public. I invite you to take part in their educational journey by attending performances and other events, and I thank you on their behalf. Meridith Randall Associate Superintendent of Instruction and Institutional Effectiveness

Welcome to Chaffey College! We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and appreciate the dynamic contributions of our talented faculty and staff. Our comprehensive program features Art, Art History, Broadcasting, Cinema, Dance, Digital Media, Music, Photography, and Theater, affording students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the arts, prepare for further studies at the baccalaureate level, or begin a career. Thank you for your support! Jason Chevalier Dean, School of Visual and Performing Arts

2016 - 2017 COLLEGE BOOK

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell St. Martin’s Press ISBN 9781250012579 $18.99

August, 1986: President Ronald Reagan is in his second term, the Berlin Wall has not yet fallen, no one knows what the internet is, and MTV is five years old (and still plays music videos). This is the backdrop for Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. Sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking, Eleanor & Park examine love and loss in the lives of two Nebraska teenagers. Park struggles with his parents’ expectations of him as a Korean-American while Eleanor tries to escape the grasp of her abusive step-father. A shared love of comics and alternative music brings the unlikely couple together even as their families try to keep them apart.

Our Mission:

www.chaffey.edu/collegebook

Each year, students, faculty, staff, and administrators select and read a common book as part of Chaffey’s One Book/One College program. Many instructors incorporate the College Book into their courses, and the One Book/One College committee holds a series of free events to encourage college-wide conversation, creativity, and community. Past events have included film screenings, food tastings, visiting speakers, faculty lectures, family programming, marathon book readings, essay contests, dialogues, live performances, blogs, art exhibitions, forays into the local community, and much, much more. 2

School of Visual and Performing Arts The School of Visual and Performing Arts is dedicated to the principle that our wide variety of programs is central to a liberal college education and essential in preparing students to meet the challenges of life and society. Furthermore, our faculty and staff are especially conscious of the importance of life-long learning opportunities and the enrichment our curriculum brings to our diverse community. VPA serves thousands of students each semester in core, elective, and major course work. We also have hundreds of students seeking degrees and certificates within our 31 programs and 14 academic and occupational departments. The school has 20 full-time faculty, 60 adjunct lecturers, and approximately 20 full-time and part-time support staff. You will find in the School of Visual and Performing Arts an extraordinary faculty and staff enriching student life and opening new windows of opportunity in transfer education and vocational training.

September No Human Being is Illegal: Posters on the Myths & Realities of the Immigrant Experience September 6 – November 19, 2016 Reception on September 14 from 12:30 – 2p.m. Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art Give me your tired, your poor; Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free … There is an enormous disparity between Emma Lazarus' eloquent promise on the Statue of Liberty and ongoing attacks against immigrants. race, class, language, and culture has unfortunately been consistent. Whether the reason for migration is to escape war, seek asylum from persecution, or pursue better economic opportunities, leaving one’s family, friends, and home is never easy. These posters document diverse efforts to make immigrants’ reality closer to their hopes and dreams. Five decades of powerful graphics use public spaces to organize and educate. They remind us to reflect upon our immigrant heritage, and challenge us to bring the immigrant experience closer to the promise on the Statue of Liberty. This exhibition is about discrimination and prejudice, but it is also about hope, commitment, and determination. The posters record struggles but they also record victories, and the ability of people to successfully organize for change. The Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG) is an educational and research archive that collects, preserves and exhibits graphics of social change. With more than 85,000 political posters, CSPG includes the largest collection of post-World War II human rights and protest posters in the U.S. Through traveling exhibitions, workshops and publications, CSPG is reclaiming the power of art to educate and inspire 5

people to action.

SPRING

January Man Up! January 9 – March 11, 2017 Reception for the artists on January 10 from 6 to 8p.m. Curated by Roman Stollenwerk Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art Man Up! is an exhibition of artworks that upset our assumptions about masculine behavior and challenge the assumed link between masculinity, gender and sex. Man Up! is also a challenge to the accepted manner of male representation and self-presentation, observing male social behavior and athleticism as discussion points for the unspoken queerness of masculine behavior. Man Up! questions the acceptance of aggression as a defining masculine characteristic and the way in which men are tacitly taught to behave violently. The work in Man Up! notes an underlying fear that contemporary masculinity must address, a fear rooted in the uncertainty of a vastly changing social and economic landscape and the changing role of masculinity in that world.

ABOUT US The Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art serves as a learning lab that features temporary exhibitions of contemporary art and other dynamic programming and public engagements throughout the academic year.
