“CHP” CHAFFEY HUSTLIN’ PANTHERS Klein believes tenth playoff appearance is possible with this young squad. THE PAST Chaffey, (231 – 86) over the past ten seasons. Last season, the Panthers had an amazing run. The “CHP” started the month of November with a 1-4 mark and two quick exits from the Ventura and Citrus Tournaments. From that point on the team came together and finished 20 – 8. The Panthers won the Foothill Conference outright with a 12 – 2 record. The “CHP” entered the playoffs as the #5 seed in the South and took on a very athletic LA Trade Tech squad. This was the first playoff game played at the Chaffey Sports Center and the Panthers didn’t disappoint the big crowd. Steffon Neal buried a three point shot with three seconds on the clock to give the “CHP” a huge victory. The season ended at Citrus College to the eventual State Runner up squad. The loss of Steffon Neal (Cal State Dominguez Hills – Hon Men All State), Ryan Jefferson (Cal State Dominguez Hills), Donte Godlock (Livingstone College) and Chris Confair (Houghton College) will be difficult for this year’s squad to overcome.

THE PRESENT The “CHP” return three performers from last year. Eddie Bowie, Andrew Ruiz and Alex Varner all gained valuable experience on last season’s Foothill Conference Championship team. They will be called upon to bring leadership and a will to win. Point Guard #1 Eddie Bowie #2 Sango Niang #12 Justin Long #24 Alex Varner Two of our captains and returners, Eddie Bowie and Alex Varner occupy the point guard position this year. These two will be joined by All CIF selection Justin Long from Rancho Cucamonga HS. Eddie is a very experienced player in our system. He will use his size and strength to get to the rim and create openings on the perimeter for our three point shooters. Alex is a winner from his CIF Championship days at Eisenhower HS. He is a steady guard who can hit threes. Justin is an excellent athlete who has a picture perfect jump shot. Sango is the youngest member of our squad. He is improving and gaining confidence daily. We are expecting big things from him.

Wings #4 Kenny Morgan #5 Justin Cole #10 Ryan Nitz #11 Jonathan CutKelvin #20 Andrew Ruiz One of our captains, Andrew Ruiz returns to man the wing position. Andrew is a very intelligent player. He gets the most out of his ability. Kenny, grey shirted last season and made the most out of that opportunity. He’s gotten bigger, stronger and more confident. Kenny is a slasher, who can hit the three. Justin is one of our best overall athletes. He has the ability to hit the three or dunk on you. Ryan, grey shirted last season and improved all areas of his game. He is a very versatile basketball player. He can play the point or the wing and can defend multiple positions. Jonathan played a few seasons ago at Rio Hondo College. We are expecting him to live up to his potential this season. Four Men #22 Darius McGee #34 Mike Karimu #30 Dylan Cooper We are excited about the potential of the four spot this year. All three players offer different skill sets. They will need to defend at a high level and play with high energy for our squad to reach its full potential. Darius played last season at San Bernardino Valley. We are counting on his experience and rebounding ability. He has a knack to get to the hole. Mike is a relentless hustler. He is 6’1 but plays like he’s 6’6. He reminds us all of former “CHP” great Bobby Kovach. Dylan will provide depth at the four spot. He is a big body who likes to rebound.

THE FUTURE “We have a great group of young men in our program. What we lack in overall experience we make up for in hussle, desire, and depth. This team plays hard. A championship is within reach.” PLAY HARDER PLAY SMARTER STAY TOGETHER

HEAD COACH - 11TH SEASON

Jeff Klein Jeff Klein is entering his eleventh season as the Head Coach at Chaffey College. The 2011/12 will be his 27th season overall. He was named the first Professional Expert to coach Men's Basketball at a California Community College in 2001. This title enables Klein to be a full time coach.

took the job at South Pasadena High School. Before coming to Chaffey, Klein concluded a dramatic season at Upland High School where he coached the Highlanders to a CIF Division 1-AAA title in 2001. Under his direction, the Highlanders ranked in the Top 10 nationally and won 28 games in a row.

Over the last 11 years with Klein as the coach, the CHP - Chaffey Hustlin' Panthers have averaged 21 wins a season (231-86). During that span, Chaffey has won the most games in the Foothill Conference with seven 20+ win seasons over the last ten years. The CHP have been to the CCCAA playoffs nine of these seasons.

During his nine seasons at Upland, Klein led the team to three league titles and made the CIF playoffs every year starting in 1995. Klein has earned top honors in coaching being named "Coach of the Year" by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA), Fox Sports West 2 television, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and the Los Angeles Times. He was also honored as the "Teacher of the Year" in 1996 from Upland High School.

The 2010-2011 Hustlin’ Panthers were an amazing “TEAM”. They got off to a slow start, but stayed together, played harder and played smarter. The team eventually willed themselves to a Foothill Conference Championship. They finished the season (20-8) and (12-2) in the always tough Foothill Conference. The “CHP” won the title in dramatic fashion beating 2nd place SBVC team on the road then coming home and beating a very talented Barstow squad 68-60 to win the Foothill Conference title outright. The victory rewarded the Panthers with the #5 seed and home court advantage in the playoffs vs a tough LA Trade Tech team. Steffon Neal hit a three to win the game in the last seconds. The season ended in the “Elite Eight vs Citrus on the road. Sophomores who led the “CHP” were Steffon Neal (Hon Men All State, DeOndre Brodie 1st team Foothill Conf, Donte Godlock 1st Team Foothill Conf, Ryan Jefferson Hon Men Foothill Conf, Mo Aldaba Hon Men Foothill Conf, Eric Ellis Hon Men Foothill Conf and Chris Confair all made major contributions. Coach Klein, at age 23, became the youngest head coach in Southern California when he

Coach Klein has been fortunate to coach many fine student athletes. Many have gone on to attend 4 year universities and a few have reached the NBA. Stacey Augmon (UNLV/Atlanta Hawks), Desmond Penigar (Utah State/Orlando Magic), and Kirk Snyder (Nevada/Utah Jazz) are those who made it to the big time. Coach Klein graduated from Lawrence High School on Long Island, New York, where he was an All-County athlete in football, basketball, and track. A graduate of SUNY at Cortland, Jeff earned his BS degree in Physical Education in 1985. In 1989, Jeff completed his MBA from the University of La Verne. Over the years, Coach Klein has hosted a very successful 50-50 basketball camp in which he has influenced many young athletes in the fundamentals of basketball. In his free time Klein enjoys spending time with his two children Danny (19) and Amanda (17), and traveling.

Chaffey

College

haffey College, California’s first community college has been providing quality education to residents of the Inland Empire since 1883. Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains the Chaffey College campus is a perfect setting for learning.

Chaffey College offers more than 100 excellent academic and occupational programs. Students may earn an associate degree or occupational certificate in various disciplines. The college prides itself in it’s outstanding transfer and graduation rate. We offer programs that lead to the completion of the first two years of a baccalaureate degree, which may be applied to a four-year degree. The Chaffey College district has grown dramatically in the past decade. Today, the Chaffey College student enrollment is over 22,000. The college’s district consists of 755,000 residents from seven cities including Chino, Chino Hills, Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland. This population growth has demonstrated the need to bring education directly to the residents. Chaffey College has three campuses located in Chino, Fontana, and Rancho Cucamonga.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Dr. Henry D. Shannon

Welcome to the 2011-12 basketball season at Chaffey College. On behalf of the Governing Board, faculty and staff, we thank you for your continued support of our athletics programs and invite you to join us in another exciting season.

In the ten years Jeff Klein has coached the Chaffey Hustlin’ Panthers the team has had four Foothill Conference titles and nine playoff appearances including the 2010-11 squad. Under his guidance, the men’s basketball team has the most winning program within the Foothill Conference, averaging 24 wins per season. Coach Plunkett begins his seventh season

at Chaffey. Already, the ladies have been dominating tournaments in preparation for the heated Foothill Conference race.

The strong history of academic and athletic success of our basketball program is continuing with the young people that will take to the court tonight. Many will graduate this year, continuing their academics at four year universities throughout the country. These studentathletes will take with them the high standards the Chaffey coaching staff has instilled in them, making their families and our college proud. Please join me in cheering the Panthers onto another successful season both on and off the court.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Carl Beach

Welcome to the 2011-12 season of Panther Basketball. This is Head Coach Jeff Klein’s 11th season leading the Chaffey Hustlin’ Panthers. In his ten years here, his teams have advanced to postseason play, an impressive, nine times. Last year’s squad was one of his finest, bringing the Foothill Conference title home for the ninth time. This year’s team features new faces as many of our student-athletes have moved onto 4 year schools nationwide. We watch with pride as they excel on the court and in the classroom, continuing their education and basketball careers at higher levels.

the Panthers. Following preseason matchups with some of the highest ranked teams in the state including defending state champions Ventura College, the women’s basketball team now faces local rivals Mt. San Jacinto, San Bernardino Valley and Rio Hondo in the race for the Foothill Conference Championship. This spring, please also join me in cheering our Panther baseball, softball, track & field and swimming teams on to victory. On behalf of the coaches and staff of the Chaffey College Athletics Department, I thank you for your continued support.
