ESCALIER School of Planning and Architecture
01 ESCALIER This design aims at maximizing spaces to provide for comfortable interaction. It utilizes optimum level differences to segregate and create hierarchical social spaces. The design creates a graceful link between green spaces, learning spaces, and social spaces to keep the campus alive. Being a cradle for creative minds, this school nurtures the need for inspiring spaces and encourages the display of innovation. It embodies the notion that creative learning is not limited to 4 walls but peaks through conversation oppurtunity and stimulating settings.

INTERACTION BTW. GREEN, BUILT AND OPEN SPACES
HIERARCHY This design utilizes hierarchy to serve as both, a unifying and segregating element. The degree of interaction around campus is controlled by the perception of espaces formed by a slight level difference. Level differences are used to break up large monotonous walkways to create spill out spaces for each user group according to each building (Professors, Administrative staff, Visitors, Students ). Each building is connected to a large open square only through a series of smaller congregational spaces.

CONCEPT AND AREA ALLOTMENT
Concept :
Site Location : Nagpur Site Area : 7.1 hectares FSI : 1.2 Climate : Tropical Savannah climate Housing : Typology Storeys : G+1, G+2, G+3 No. of units : 636 Resident Population : 2544 Density : 90 units per hectare Avg. Family size : 4 people No. of families per DU : 1
This design was based off an irregular grid system that formed blocks of various dimensions. The blocks created a sequence of open spaces, interlinked with narrow pedestrian streets shaded and kept alive through a careful mix with the recreational and communal area. Design aim : To create an urban pattern of low-rise high-density housing based on a sequence of open spaces linked by shaded pedestrian pathways. The built mass character aims to be an interesting play of solids and voids due to staggered units, projecting balconies, and shaded walkways.
Planning Principles : Clustering of buildings, creating shaded walkways, accessible from all sides. Courtyard system providing public space within clusters, creating a micro-climate free from dust and heat
High-density development representative of the typical Indian community or mohalla Careful mix with the recreational spaces, communal area and living spaces Peripheral looped vehicular roads with no dead ends and cul-de-sacs to improve way-finding Courtyard proportions that enable constant shade and breaks in the form. A central open spine oriented along the wind direction optimizes ventilation throughout the space. The optimum space between the cluster blocks help to tackle harsh sunlight in Nagpur through mutual shading.

DESIGN PROCESS A grid of 9.5 x 9.5 m was overlayed on the site
Initial grid system (9.5 x 9.5 sqm)
Grid lines are erased at regular intervals to form 4 different types of blocks (A, B, C, D). The grid is cleared down the central diagonal to form an open central spine in the site wind direction.
Cluster blocks
Blocks were allocated for EWS, LIG, MIG and HIG housing based on area requirements. Intermediate spaces were segregated for green walkways. Looped peripheral roadway and green spaces were zoned.
Alotting green spaces
Allocated blocks were combines to form chunks of space to be used for each type of housing

E XI STING SITE C ONTE XT The site is a very significant spot to foodies all around the city and is located in the heart of the city. It houses multiple food stalls and is subject to heavy footfall disrupted by heavy vehicular traffic, thus creating a chotic space. The street is also not planned effectively to accomodate its function and users. The absence of seating and comfortable space for the users deteriorates the experience within the space. DESIG N A IM The redesigned space aims to accommodate the stalls and heavy pedestrian traffic by cordoning off vehicular access and transforming the street into green spaces scattered with stalls. The footfall is to be split amongst several green spaces accommodating the function of the street with seating areas amongst greenery and calming elements like water fountains to slow down the space and elevate the user experience. DAYTIME LANDSCAPE INTENT : The chosen shrubs trees and ground cover have been chosen to provide a lush green forest feel with tall green foliage broken up by bright flowering trees shading the walkways. Thus drawing the eye up during the day and providing an inviting space beneath these trees with minimal shrubs in interactive spaces and expanses of blanketing ground cover. As this commercial area gets busier after dark, the shrubs lining the spaces give an interesting silhouette amongst the nightsky and draw the eye to the middle ground. NIGHTTIME LANDSCAPE INTENT : As this commercial area gets busier after dark, the effect of the landscape under minimal lighting plays a key role in the user experience. The landscape tries to engage the users sense of smell and perception of the silhouettes of the landscape elements. Plants that flower and emit fragrance during the night are also placed to enhance the landscape beyond the visual element.

F AR ME R S M A RKET The existing food street hosts a food festival once a year to promote local farmers and their produce. The redesigned space aims to elevate this into a weekend farmers market and a seperate space to host more such festivals throughout the year with minimal temporary infrastructural arrangement and the cnvenience of a minimised set up process. LANDSCAPE INTENT : This space has been landscaped with winter blooming trees and shrubs as the festivals are usually held in the winter time. The beds of colourful shrubs and floors laiden with fallen flowers attract many visitors and create a wonderland out of the space.

05 BOUNDED Bedroom/Workspace in a pandemic
This interior design aims to break up a single 5m x 5m, 4m high bedroom space into a series of differentiated workspaces, a dire need during the pandemic. The design recognizes the amplified effect of monotonous dwelling space on the user's productivity and mindset in the absence of outdoor activities and inability to socialize. Hence, it intends to keep the curiousity alive by creating pockets of spaces through level differences and optimizing the degree of enclosure between spaces. The design also accommodates a lot of storage and display options without compromising lighting and ventilation. The room has 5 options work/ seating spaces : Bed : The bed is surrounded by storage surfaces and has a foldable bedside table that extends to a height comfortable enough to work on while sitting on the bed. Bay window : The bay window seating has wide cushioned spaces with a sunken flooring and a foldable work surface extending from the bed side table. It provides a cozy comfortable booth seating that allows users to soak up the sunlight. Seating corner : The sunken in corner of the elevated platform encloses a small space. It provides a neat working space with a foldable work space tucked away into the raised platform. The rug helps to visually segregate the space and add an extra perception of privacy. Loft Space : The loft is 1.8m high and is enclosed by a wall and railing on three sides. The 4th side is closed off by an open bookshelf that extends from the platform below. This serves as a functional datum between the two levels of the space. The Study desk : This desk is subject to ample sunlight and a green window sill to give a comfortable working space. This space provides for an additional work station that can be pulled out like a drawer, from the platform beneath the book shelf.
