By Ekenia Chifamba When raised correctly, a girl child will always be a gem wherever she goes. Therefore as we celebrate Women’s Month this March 2018, we celebrate the big girls who will forever be girls. Truly, once a girl you will always be a girl. Within this month, Shamwari Yemwanasikana (SYS) on its own or in partnership with other like-minded organizations will be engaging in activities that will amplify the women’s and girls’ voices. As an organization we have been working closely in bridging the gap between women and girls especially through our intergenerational dialogues and economic empowerment initiatives. In spite of all the successes, SYS has noted with concern the continued trend of senseless abuse and violence against women and girls. These acts of VAW which will be borne firstly as girls continue into womanhood. So there’s need to expedite the process of aligning the laws that protect women and girls with the constitution. Also recurrent education through awareness raising and community campaigns is crucial. To pen off, in this Special Edition in honour of gallant efforts by women who will forever be girls in their own right – we salute all the actions that women in Zimbabwe and the world over are carrying out daily for their advancement and recognition. We say #LadiesAct and be like skyscrapers as “There’s a treasure in every woman that makes us unique!” Happy Women’s Month!!!

Zimbabwe’s SuperWomen…

By Chakanetsa Ruzvidzo

In Zimbabwe today, one can never doubt that women are legends who are role models to countless girls. Even though the world celebrates the International Women’s Day – we at SYS celebrate women’s day every day. In this regard, we will not only focus on women who achieved highly in social, economic, political and societal aspects of life – for us being a great woman is no only about making waves as activists, artists, and go-getters but merely being mothers, daughters, friends and sisters – edifies one to be a Super Woman. The women’s discourse for equality and recognition in Zimbabwe has never been easy as it was full of tears, blood and sweat. Precolonial Zimbabwe saw women as mere subjects to men with a few luminaries. The colonial period had the advent of women Amazons who fought gallantly for the nation’s liberation. While the post-colonial era had the emergence of key figures who not only stood up for themselves but uplifted other women to be skyward like skyscrapers and achieve their dreams. Women in Zimbabwe have made it and ventured into male dominated fields with a snap of a finger through sheer hard work and dedication. One can also see that it’s not a secret that if a woman is doing what was traditionally a man’s job – she does it to perfection. As such in this Special Edition of the Women’s Month in 2018, we celebrate women in Zimbabwe who have been key in developmental issues. This will be an annual celebration hence the list in this edition is not exhaustive but our selection for this year. So we have featured the following as shown on our collage:

Why celebrate women? By Rutendo Mudavanhu All over the world women have taken centre stage in advancing their rights. Many conferences have been held, laws and policies formulated and equal opportunities created. This is a noble move in putting women on the map. As SYS we stand with these women and we strongly feel that without women, the world would have been empty not only in terms of population but progress. Therefore we celebrate women for who they are and acknowledge their strength as well as contributions that have coloured the world. Women have been “hidden figures” for a very long time as some of the world’s successes had been attributed to men while leaving women out of the picture. Unfortunately this gave the world an incomplete and distorted history so we are encouraging girls and women to take charge and create a world where the women’s image, status, values and accomplishments are a household name. IT BEGINS WITH JUST A FEW OF US!!! #WomenCrashEveryday #PressForProgress

“Without women, the world would have been empty not only in terms of population but progress.”
