THE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL CHAMBER Knowledge does not only come from books. This enclosed, underground space uses rammed earth for its walls, reflecting the elegant patterns of the earth tectonics, allowing users to spatially experience geology through the building.

THE GROVE The building is an escape f r o m t h e c i t y ’s u r b a n f a b r i c . The grass roof and the valley that runs through the building allow users to feel like they are surrounded by landscape and mountains.

Nature, as the origin of all, is undoubtedly the best meditation space in the world. Shan Shui is a library about nature, the natural environment also reminds people of the existing world we are staying, instead of the digital world where a lot of neoterics are obsessed with. In Chinese, Shan means mountain and landscape, S h u i m e a n s w a t e r, t o g e t h e r i t e m b o d i e s the imagery and motifs of Chinese towards a utopia.

The green paradise is an artificial landscape. Citizens and tourists would be able to clance at the green land surrounded by urban fabrics. I t a r o u s e p e o p l e ’s c o u r i o s i t y and attract them to visit the librar y.

THE ASTRONOMICAL TOWER The concrete, cylindrical tower is a sacred place to have a unique experience of astronomy while reading. The walls are solid with tiny openings that are arranged in the patterns of the constellations, allowing light to slip in, reflecting the beauty of the night sk y. The tower only has one view and that is through the roof glazing.

TRANSITION: STORY OF A PEACH COLONY The story of the peach colony is the Chinese version of a utopia, a garden of Eden. The transition of the library borrows the descrition of the transition from the chaos to the retreat: Narrow Entrance with a glimpse of the space inside. The machine, Myraid, will create a sense of citizenship and place by integrating ecology and ocenic industry through the distribution of usable w a t e r a n d t h e d i r e c t c o n n e c t i o n o f p e o p l e a n d r e s o u r c e s b e t w e e n t h e c o a s t a n d t h e c e n t r a l t r a i n s t a t i o n . I t c a r r i e s t h e ‘ m y r i a d ’, t h e ‘ m a n y n e s s ’ and multiplicities of plate and persons by mediating and distributing the phenomena and rituals of the ocean to establish a sense of place for t h e e x i s t i n g a n d f u t u r e Ya n C h e p .
