The Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Celebration Kicks Off in Rochester
The Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Celebration will take place in Rochester from September 2 through October 31, 2022. The UNVEILING of the Harriet Tubman “Journey to Freedom” traveling sculpture will be on Friday, September 2 at 11:00 AM, during a kickoff program downtown at Washington Square Park, 10 St. Mary’s Place (located near GEVA Theater at South Clinton Avenue and Court Street). On Sunday, September 4th from 1-3pm is the youth-led Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Celebration OPENING CEREMONY, held at the Rochester Museum & Science Center's Eisenhart Auditorium, followed by FREE tours of the Museum from 3:00-5:00 PM. The Tubman sculpture will remain on open display at Washington Square Park throughout its two-month stay in Rochester. All events and activities presented by the Celebration Committee to honor Harriet Tubman during her visit are FREE and open to the public. The Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Celebration sponsors and leaders welcome the presence of church members to the historical events from Sept. 2 - Oct .31 while the traveling statue is in Rochester. This Harriet Tubman “Journey to Freedom” sculpture by the Wesley Wofford Sculpture Studio is a remarkable work of art that features Harriet Tubman in mid stride, hustling towards freedom with a youngster in tow.

Annual Jazz Extravaganza to Celebrate 96th Birthday of John Coltrane!

Saturday, September 24, 2022, COLTRANE continues at 2:00 p.m. with a Q&A followed by a screening of Le Chat dans le Sac (The Cat in the Bag) at 3:00 p.m. Directed by filmmaker Gilles Groulx, The Cat in the Bag (French with English subtitles), is a black-and-white film about two young lovers in Montreal, featuring a soundtrack by John Coltrane.
The Love Supreme School of Music will perform 7:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. The festival will culminate at 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium with live music by headliners Curtis Lundy & UMOJA featuring Cassie Watson Francillon, with George Caldwell (Piano), Wayne Escoffery (Sax), and Victor Jones (Drums).
This year’s COLTRANE commemorative poster was illustrated by the dynamic Buffalobased artist, Monet Alyssa (monetalyssa.com). Signed limited edition prints will be available for purchase in the Museum Store during the festival. Previous posters were created by artists Phillip Burke, Stacey Robinson, Edreys Wajed, and Julia Bottoms.
