‘Tailgate’ Scores Big The ninth annual “Tailgate” event was hosted by the Washington County Chamber on August 25 at Silver Wings Ballroom. There was a great crowd on hand to enjoy the delicious food catered by Design II, plus plenty of cold drinks. There was a silent auction that included many unique items, plus eight “Big Board” packages that had people clamoring to take the lead and the popular card raffle include three items that had folks buying cards quickly. There was also a 50/50 ticket drawing for cash that was a new addition to the event.

Brenham and Burton high school cheerleaders added to the festivities by serving food to sponsor tables. Members of the National Champion Blinn College Dance Team helped sell the card raffles to guests. Event chairman Kurt Alfred said: “Like years in the past, Tailgate 2016 was a success! It is always amazing to see the continued community involvement and support we receive at the Chamber. A special thank you goes out to all of the businesses and individuals that provided an auction item. It is through their sup-

port and donations that this Chamber function continues to thrive. I must also recognize the Chamber Board of Directors, Chamber staff, and Blue Blazers organization because without their hard work and participation, the event would not have been as successful. It truly takes a team effort to organize and hold such a great event!” Receiving so much support for this ninth annual event helped to ensure its success. The

Tourism Tuesday

Tourism News

The next Tourism Tuesday meeting will be on September 13 in the Chamber Conference Room beginning at 10 a.m. Join the Chamber-CVB staff as they reveal plans for the new budget year that launches October 1. Hear what other tourism partners are planning, and report on your own activities for the benefit of everyone who attends. Be sure to bring brochures and flyers to share.

H.A.R.T.A. comes to Brenham

You may have seen a few extra people wandering around town with Visitor Center “Welcome” bags on August 31. This group of retired teachers was to make the trip back in May, but had to reschedule due to the flooding. H.A.R.T.A. (Humble Area Retired Teachers Association) finally made it to Washington County and they descended upon Downtown Brenham to shop, eat and have fun. After their time downtown, the group visited the Blue Bell ice cream parlor and Bliss Candy Company. Their members raved about this community and can’t wait to return and stay longer!

TACVB Conference

Chamber-CVB staff member Jenny Mills had the opportunity to attend a tourism industry conference in El Paso in August. The Texas Association of CVBs (TACVB) hosts conferences to inspire and educate leaders within destination marketing organizations. The conference was a huge success and Jenny returned with new knowledge and inspiration, eager to implement in Brenham & Washington County! Each day featured an inspiring opening session followed by a variety of education sessions. Jenny was able to attend sessions on services, sports, sales and leadership. One session was dedicated to receiving input from industry peers. They are a great resource to DMOs with questions about how others handle marketing, branding, social media practices, staffing, events and more. Not only were the education sessions informative, but the opportunities to network with others from around the state was invaluable. There was an off-site session to see the El Paso Visitor Center. They have done an excellent job of making sure the visitor feels welcomed and taken care of by their staff. The Director was introduced and spoke about how they operate two information centers, one of which is at the airport. “It’s always interesting to go to other destinations and see how they market their area, how they greet visitors, what kind of information they provide, etc.” explained Mills. “El Paso did a great job at making us feel very welcomed. My hope and desire is to make sure that all who come to Brenham will have an outstanding visitor experience, whether they come for a day or a week.”

148th Washington County Fair

Enjoy the “Oldest County Fair in Texas” from September 10-17 with shows, rodeos, music and fun. This year’s fair and rodeo will include Nashville entertainment, a carnival, crafts, food, livestock and poultry auctions, commercial exhibits, attractions, and much more. Activities and entrance fees vary by day. View the complete schedule of activities online at www.washingtoncofair.com.

Round Top Antiques Fair

The biannual Round Top Antiques Fair will open Saturday, September 17, and run through Saturday, October 1. Twice a year Round Top is host to one of the nation’s largest antiques events. The show started in 1967 with 22 dealers at the Round Top Rifle Hall. Because of the show’s success, many other shows and venues opened up and now all towns in a 10-mile radius of Round Top are included.

Texas Tenors Live at the O’Donnell

The Texas Tenors will be performing at the O’Donnell Performing Arts Center at Blinn on October 2. With an Emmy Award winning PBS special and Billboard chart-topping albums, it’s easy to see why these are America’s favorite new tenors. Since their whirlwind debut six
