ORION QUARTET FAREWELL TOUR WITH

IDA KAVAFIAN

STRINGS

Reach for the stars with the world-renowned Orion String Quartet as they celebrate their 36th, and final, season together. Hailed as “consistently beguiling and technically impeccable” (The Los Angeles Times), don’t miss your last chance to hear violinists Daniel Phillips and Todd Phillips—brothers who share the first violin chair equally— violist Steven Tenenbom, and cellist Timothy Eddy in their final CMNW performance as an ensemble. Sensational CMNW favorite, violinist/ violist Ida Kavafian, returns with them for an evening of beloved classics by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.

“The persuasive power of [their] performance came from the exquisiteness and eloquence the four players brought their lines…but it also came from how all of them phrased together—and, it seemed, breathed together. The Orion Quartet is a configuration of particular sensitivity and bravado.”

CATALYST QUARTET:

¡Viva la Música!

STRINGS

Hailed by The New York Times as “invariably energetic and finely burnished…playing with earthy vigor,” the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet combines a serious commitment to diversity, education, and contemporary works with virtuosic playing “reminiscent of great quartets of the past such as the Guarneri and Budapest” (Richmond Times). In this concert, Catalyst concludes their year as CMNW Artistsin-Residence with an exciting evening of Latin-inspired works by Paquito D’Rivera, Astor Piazzolla, and Maurice Ravel, along with George Gershwin’s gorgeous Lullaby.

“Some complain that classical music was written by dead white guys, is performed by white musicians, and listened to by white senior citizens. Luckily, there are groups like the Catalyst Quartet to combat this trend. They serve not only to foster performer diversity but also to promote works by non-white composers…”

STRINGS

Hailed as one of the most exciting young string quartets in the world, the Goldmund Quartet brought the virtual house down during the pandemic with their CMNW AT-HOME concert debut from Germany’s Polling Abbey. Now, finally, they will be performing live in Portland! The Goldmund Quartet’s exquisitely refined playing has made them the rising stars of the European chamber music scene. You can experience their power, grace, and precision in one of the only concerts of their second North American tour, performing masterworks by Haydn, Borodin, and Beethoven.

“The Goldmund Quartet has phenomenal control of dynamics and complex rhythmic demands, and offers a clear, thoughtful, and very convincing vision…”

“For most dancers, the laws of physics are restrictions to be observed. For BODYVOX, they are inconveniences to be ignored. With mischievous glee, the contemporary dance company defies the boundaries of flexibility and gravity, pushing its dancers to kinetic heights that sometimes look triumphantly impossible.”

GABRIEL KAHANE + PEKKA KUUSISTO: In the Garden of the Gift

Portland’s award-winning composer and singer-songwriter, Gabriel Kahane, brings to us his multi-year creative collaboration, In the Garden of the Gift. He converges with internationally renowned violinist and Finnish musical innovator, Pekka Kuusisto, to create a wholly unique evening mixing chamber music, story, song, and improvisation. Kahane’s past creative partnerships include trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, multi-instrumentalists Nathalie Joachim and Caroline Shaw, Attacca Quartet, and Sandbox Percussion. Here, these two dynamic composers create a new “musical gift” combining strings, electronics, keyboards, vocals, guitar, and more, for a collaborative exploration of music and its relationship to community.

the Garden of the Gift

“...an exercise in lyric beauty. He sings in a warm, resonant, melancholic baritone, which coasts upward into a plaintive falsetto. He plays the piano with a poetic touch—his father is the distinguished pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane— and his music is suffused with idiosyncratic, enriched tonal harmony.” — The New Yorker

CO-PRESENTED WITH PATRICIA RESER CENTER FOR THE ARTS

“Intensely virtuosic, the violin [Pekka Kuusisto's] is nonetheless always part of a greater whole: from folky, whistled tunes to roaring and growling on the detuned bottom string, storms of colour are unleashed for the orchestra to absorb and rework in surging textures.”
