TRAVELS WITH MENDELSSOHN CMS’s season welcome offers a sampling of the rich cultural journey that enthralled the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn. The humor of Haydn which delighted Londoners, the unforgettable lyricism of the “Prince of Song” Schubert, and the mystical piety of the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina, all culminate in the exotic colors of France, fashioned into hypnotic music by master composer Maurice Ravel. Haydn Symphony in G major for Piano, Flute, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, Hob. I:94, “Surprise” (1791) Mendelssohn Selected Songs for Soprano and Piano, Opp. 34 and 57 (1835-41) Schubert “Der Hirt auf dem Felsen” for Soprano, Clarinet, and Piano, D. 965, Op. 129 (1828) Palestrina Adoramus Te Christe for Five Voices (1584) Ravel Trio in A minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello (1914)

EXPLORING GREAT BRI The magic of the British Isles seduces not only its native artists, but all who find the elegance of the cities, the romance of the literature, and misty magic of the moors irresistible. MENDELSSOHN’S BERLIN: BEETHOVEN, HAYDN, & BACH For centuries, the energy of Berlin has attracted the world’s most ambitious artists and intellectuals. DESTINATION VIENNA: MOZART, SCHOENBERG, & BRAHMS
Vienna has likely produced more music beloved by more people than any city in the world. No Grand Tour would be complete without a stop in the Austrian capital, and on this visit listeners will experience Vienna during three of its definitive artistic eras. While Mozart represents Classical perfection, Brahms supplies Romantic fervor, and Arnold Schoenberg bids a nostalgic farewell to the nineteenth century while offering a tantalizing taste of music to come. Mozart Quintet in C minor for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Cello, K. 406 (1788) Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Two Cellos, Op. 4 (1899) Brahms Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Two Cellos, Op. 18 (1859-60)

REFLECTIONS
Like all composers of the 1820’s, Mendelssohn was awestruck by the powerful profundity of Beethoven’s music. In his early Op. 13 string quartet, he freely borrowed ideas from Beethoven, fusing his own youthful style with the voice of the master. The concert’s second half finds three diverse composers drawn to a common inspiration: the power of Jewish music, both spiritual and folk-inspired. Beethoven Sonata in E-flat major for Violin and Piano, Op. 12, No. 3 (1797-98) Mendelssohn Quartet No. 2 in A minor for Strings, Op. 13 (1827) Bloch “Nigun” (“Improvisation”) from Baal shem, Three Pictures of Hassidic Life for Violin and Piano (1923) Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, String Quartet, and Piano, Op. 34 (1919) Schoenfield Trio for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano (1986)

winter festival
the spirit of mendelssohn featuring
Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, and Schumann In the middle of this season’s Grand Tour we pause to celebrate our journey’s protagonist: the musical, intellectual, and human phenomenon Felix Mendelssohn. History’s greatest musical prodigy devoured all knowledge and mastered every skill available, and his infectiously effervescent chamber music is imbued with the luminous brilliance of his mind and warmth of his heart. CMS’s Winter Festival presents three portraits of Mendelssohn in the company of composers who were his idols, his friends, and his inspirations.

Mendelssohn’s Sorrow The height of our joys may be measured by the depth of our sorrows, and this final Winter Festival program visits extremes of the human experience. The darkness of Bach’s fugue is brightened in one by Mendelssohn; Schumann’s emotional piano trio is contrasted by the serenity of his Arabesque. But life’s thick clouds have often brought forth music of agonizing beauty: In his moving final string quartet, Mendelssohn openly grieves over the passing of his beloved sister. Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor for Keyboard, BWV 903 (before 1723) Mendelssohn Fugue in E-flat major for String Quartet, Op. 81, No. 4 (1827) Mendelssohn Quartet in F minor for Strings, Op. 80 (1847) Schumann Arabesque in C major for Piano, Op. 18 (1838-39) Schumann Trio No. 1 D minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 63 (1847)

A pair of trios by Dvořák and Brahms will envelop listeners in the sonic splendor of the Romantic era. RETURN TO MOZART Throughout history, people at life’s critical junctures have turned to the music of Mozart for sustenance and tranquility. This riveting listening experience mirrors life itself – the turbulence of Shostakovich and bracing ferocity of Bartók, culminating in the ideal peace that only Mozart can supply. Bartók Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano (1938) Shostakovich Trio No. 2 in E minor for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Op. 67 (1944) Mozart Quintet in A major for Clarinet, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, K. 581 (1789)

america! Had Mendelssohn made it to America on his Grand Tour, he surely would have relished the openness and optimism that energizes this country like no other. This season’s concluding program pays tribute to that spirit through the music of five of America’s master composers, who bring diversity, invention, and immediate appeal to this ebullient homeland celebration. Two magisterial works – Mozart’s quintet for horn and strings and Brahms’s B-flat sextet – frame one of Mendelssohn’s most effervescent creations, his string quartet in D major, composed at the height of his powers. The Escher Quartet, who recently recorded Mendelssohn’s complete quartets, anchors this program of popular classics. Mozart Quintet in E-flat major for Horn, Violin, Two Violas, and Cello, K. 407 (1782) Mendelssohn Quartet in D major for Strings, Op. 44, No. 1 (1838) Brahms Sextet No. 1 in B-flat major for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Two Cellos, Op. 18 (1859-60)

The magnetic pianist Wu Qian returns to the series to partner with the phenomenal Orion Weiss in Dvořák’s infectious Slavonic Dances, and the concert concludes with Schumann’s beloved piano quartet, its legendary cello solos performed by distinguished guest Jan Vogler. Mozart Quartet in E-flat major for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, K. 493 (1786) Dvorˇ ák Selected Slavonic Dances for Piano, Four Hands (1886) Schumann Quartet in E-flat major for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 47 (1842)

Support the Chamber Music Society
Thank you for considering the Chamber Music Society’s 2016-2017 offerings and for being a member of our loyal audience. The season is filled with exciting performances available at affordable prices. However, revenue from ticket purchases covers less than half the cost of producing our season. Gifts from chamber music lovers like you will help us bring unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime musical experiences to all of our audiences. Your generosity will also help us to develop gifted young musicians through CMS Two and CMS Chamber Music Encounters, as well as commission new works, record for national radio broadcasts, film concerts for streaming video, and offer education programs in area schools and at Lincoln Center. Below is a list of benefits and opportunities that we offer our valued supporters to both deepen their CMS experience and to recognize them for their generosity. Please consider enhancing your support of the Chamber Music Society and this wonderful art form by making a gift today. • Join the Friends of the Chamber Music Society with a gift of $100 or more and enjoy open rehearsals in the Rose Studio, among other benefits. • Join the Patrons of the Chamber Music Society with a gift of $1,500 or more and enjoy intermission receptions in the beautiful Hauser Patron Salon and postconcert receptions with CMS Artists, among other benefits.
• Join the Artistic Directors Circle with a gift of $10,000 or more and enjoy many privileges including exclusive musical evenings in private homes with David Finckel, Wu Han, and guest artists. • Join the Alice Tully Circle by including CMS in your will or other planned gift and receive invitations to special receptions and concerts throughout the season.
There are many other opportunities to sponsor specific parts of the season, such as concerts or programs, or CMS Two, in your own name or in the name of someone you would like to honor.
