Lt. Governor Speaks at March Breakfast The Chamber welcomed Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp to its March breakfast. It was sponsored by Beth Kigel of KBS Strategies Group and Bilzin Sumberg, Attorneys at Law. Kottkamp spoke about economic development on the statewide and local level. As Chairman of the Board of Space Florida, he stressed that it is very important to Florida as well as the country to continue space exploration and that it defines us as an economic superpower. He stated that there is a bridge between the live sciences and space, and used the example that one biotech company is working on an exercise pill that will enable astronauts’ muscles to withstand long periods in space without muscle loss, and of course, would have a use here in the United States as well. He also pointed out the importance of funding for early development of children so that if children are on the right track, the addition of prisons may not be necessary.

Committee C Ambassador March Madness

Women in Business

The Ambassador Committee hosted their 1st Call-A-Thon of 2010 earlier this month. This quarterly event was hosted graciously by Milner, Inc., who provided the phones and office space for the 15 volunteers.

The March Women in Business Committee meeting was sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic Florida Health and Wellness Center located in CityPlace Tower, West Palm Beach. It is a notfor-profit academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. It has over 180 physicians, practicing in over 35 specialties. Providing outstanding patient care is based upon the principles of quality, innovation, teamwork and service. The Cleveland Clinic Florida Health and Wellness Center was established in 2007 and offers many advantages characteristic of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic and its unique model of medicine. Patients can expect a quality experience distinguished by comfort, open communication and a highly-personalized approach to care as a result of the collective expertise of multiple specialists, who collaborate to provide optimal healthcare.

Each Ambassador called several businesses in Palm Beach County that are not yet Chamber members. The purpose of the call was to invite the prospective Chamber members to attend, as special guests, an upcoming event hosted exclusively by the Ambassador Committee. This quarter’s event, called an Ambassador Happy Hour, was held at the luxurious and SELF ST O R AG E beautiful STORE Self Storage W IN E ST O R AG E and Wine Storage in Palm Beach Gardens. Guests were greeted by the Ambassador Committee, and learned first-hand from these seasoned members how the Chamber has benefited their businesses. After the Call-A-Thon, Carrabbas Italian Grill on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard provided the entire Ambassador Committee with complimentary drinks and delicious food. The Chamber’s Ambassador Committee has exclusive, invitation-only events and meets the second Wednesday every month at 12:00 p.m. at the Chamber. If you are interested in getting involved with this group of movers and shakers, please contact Jaime Crespy at 561-833-3711 Ext. 230 or email at jcrespy@ palmbeaches.org.

The speaker, Dr. Lester Rosen, is a Past President of the American College of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and the past recipient of the Chamber’s Health Care Professional of the Year. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and it is the third most common cancer. Statistically, colorectal cancer screening saves lives. If everyone aged 50 years or older were screened regularly, as many as 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided. The next Women in Business Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, April 8 at 11:45 a.m. in the Chamber board room. For more information, please contact Kelley Burke at kburke@palmbeaches.org, or call (561) 833-3711 ext. 231.

Connection The Chamber’s Health Care Committee Donates Their Organs! The March Health Care Committee (HCC) meeting was honored to have Rosetta RolleHylton from the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) as their guest speaker. LAORA is a federally-mandated local organization that reaches out for donors from the Bahamas to Port St. Lucie, Florida. Rosetta brought three organ transplant recipients with her and their stories were very moving and inspirational. After Rosetta’s compelling presentation, many HCC members signed organ donor cards in hopes that their generosity will too save lives for the many who are awaiting transplants. The meeting was graciously hosted by Jeffrey Cording and his staff from The Medical Store. The Medical Store is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation, and the meeting was held at Hospice’s West Palm Beach location. Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation is a 501(c3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the specialized programs and services offered by Hospice of Palm Beach County through strategic philanthropy, competitive fund management, and the responsible stewardship of those gifts entrusted to it. Jennifer Martinez and her colleagues from Hospice also provided tours of their landmark facility. The Chamber’s Health Care Committee meets every third Tuesday of the month and has several After Hours Social events planned for the remainder of 2010.

Did You Know? • There is no age limit for organ donation; an example was given of a 96 year-old man who saved 4 lives by donating his liver. Your liver regenerates itself. Therefore, one liver could be dissected and save multiple lives. • There is no limit to how many times an organ can be transplanted. A heart transplant recipient can be an active organ donor and donate that heart to another recipient, and so on. • 106,000 people are currently awaiting organs to stay alive.

If you are interested in learning more about this dynamic committee and its events, please contact Ron Walters, Membership Development, at (561) 833-3711 ext. 236 or rwalters@palmbeaches.org.

Let’s Grow Together The Chamber enjoyed a banner year in 2009, welcoming over 460 new members and the momentum continues in 2010. The Chamber’s Health Care Committee has grown to over 100 active members. The Young Professionals of the Palm Beaches has in excess of 300 participants. In March alone, there were 19 networking opportunities, making the Chamber’s calendar the most active of any professional organization in Palm Beach County.

As the Chamber grows, so do its members. They benefit from a full calendar with events in the morning, at lunch and after hours. There are free events to educate members in networking techniques, social networking and how to get the most out of the Chamber. There are presentations on how to maximize relationships made in the Chamber, meet the right contacts and plan productive meetings. It’s a busy group with something for everyone. Find the things that work best for you. For suggestions, attend an Open House Coffee for a thorough understanding of everything the Chamber offers. Contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director, at (561) 833-3711 ext. 235 or visit the Chamber calendar for a listing of all the upcoming events.

Do Some Spring Cleaning... As the Chamber looks to improve its programming, it examines what’s working best and looks for ways to better serve its members. As spring cleaning continues, the Chamber revamps committees and offers suggestions to members on getting a fresh start in 2010.

Verify your contact and company information for accuracy as the annual publications will be going to print soon.

Update your keywords. Make sure the Chamber has an up-to-date reflection of your business. Review your keywords that drive the search engine on the Chamber’s website to be sure it’s still an accurate representation of the focus of your business.

Clean out your contact base. Touch base with your contacts and see if they have changes in their contact information. Make sure yours is accurate in their databases. You want a contact base full of useful and productive relationships; weed out the ones that are going nowhere.

Change your routine. If 2009 was full of morning events for you, try to get to something in a different time format. Try a Power Networking lunch session or an after-hours Mixer. If you’ve been a night owl, attend a monthly breakfast at the Convention Center. You’ll find a completely different kind of member there.

Guide to the Palm Beaches Deadline Approaches The 2011/2012 annual Guide to the Palm Beaches will go to print soon and closes to new members at the end of April. The Chamber offers its members a vast array of tools to market, brand and promote their company’s products and services, the most popular of which is the Guide. 8,000 copies of the publication will be distributed to Chamber members, local dignitaries, politicians and business leaders. • The Guide to the Palm Beaches offers both alphabetic and business category listings of all Chamber members, information on the Palm Beaches as a business community, residential paradise and world-class travel destination. • Inclusion in the Guide establishes members’ credibility and positions them to take their roles as leaders in their fields. • Visitors and newcomers to the Palm Beaches will receive copies in the many visitor and

relocation packages the Chamber mails each year. It is the most frequently requested item in the Chamber by residents, visitors and local business men and women. As a member, this is the perfect time to be sure that the Chamber has current information for your entries. Please take this opportunity to visit the Chamber’s website, www.palmbeaches.org, and review your contact information there. This provides the information needed for inclusion in the Guide. Members can make any corrections needed with their user names and passwords in the “Members Only” section of the website or contact the Chamber for assistance. Area businesses that are not yet Chamber members are encouraged to contact the Chamber to learn more about the Guide to the Palm Beaches and the vast array of membership benefits. As the next Guide goes to print, it’s an opportunity to insure that those businesses have the advantage of appearing in this important publication. For more information, contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director, at (561) 833-3711 ext. 235 or kfanelli@palmbeaches.org.

Participate in a Chamber Money Maker and you’ll learn to make a quick, concise and memorable introduction and how to use it at Chamber events. The Money Makers are also held monthly, are free and open to members and non-members. The Open House Coffee is an overview of the Chamber’s programs and services, a must for new members or refreshers on the many benefits of membership and how to get the most out of members’ investment of dollars and time. Open House attendees receive information packets that include information on the Chamber’s programs and services, copies of the Chamber’s directories, a complete Chamber calendar and descriptions of the committees, task forces and special groups. Held twice a month, Open House Coffees are easy to schedule, free and open to members and non-members.

Tools For Success

Another member favorite is the Chamber Money Maker, the Chamber’s miniseminar on networking skills. Members are experts on their companies’ products and services, but may need a little help with their networking skills. It may all be new to them or perhaps they just need to be reminded of what they already know! Either way, the Chamber wants to do everything possible to be sure members are getting the most out of their networking investment.

Chamber Calendar Includes Free Events The Tools for Success Seminars are free seminars on a variety of subjects vital to business growth. Past presentations have included marketing, a United States Postal Service presentation on direct mail campaigns, sales skills, leadership and effective public speaking. Internet social networking, business funding and website maximization are among the current topics planned. Geared to provide members with the tools to succeed, the seminars provide timely information and expert speakers. The series is free to members and addresses issues with which many members need assistance. One-On-One 101 is a new free event to the Chamber calendar in response to members requesting more direction in developing relationships within the Chamber, forming strategic alliances for referrals and making the most of their Chamber investment. It takes networking contacts generated from events and directs them into productive one-on-one meetings. One-On-One 101 is a step-by-step approach to establishing a plan for setting meetings, following an agenda and tracking success.

“Thanks and compliments on the Chamber programming. The relevance and quality of these programs is top-notch. Your care and attention to detail is duly noted and appreciated. The presenters are prepared, organized, and qualified. The presentations are practiced, refined and crisp. And the coffee is really good! I’ve attended and run many programs of this kind in large corporate environments. These programs are second to none. Said with a smile, “This is not our fathers’ Chamber”!”
