Where the Chamber’s Been: Recent Events Holiday Mixer at the Improv The Chamber’s December mixer was an evening filled with laughter at the worldfamous Improv Comedy Club & Dinner Theatre at CityPlace. The Improv, which started almost 50 years ago, is still the most important live venue for new comedians. Chamber guests were invited to stay for the “Home Safe for Kids Comedy Fest” including the Celebrity Stand-Up Battle, featuring local radio and TV personalities, who took comedy lessons leading up to the occasion. The evening’s headline act was national touring comedian Dean Napolitano.
Special thanks to Scott Keeler and Rene Harte
The Improv at CityPlace is a versatile venue and is available for private parties, luncheons and sales presentations. Marathon Weekend Kicks Off with an Olympian The Palm Beaches Marathon Festival, presented by Publix, kicked off this morning with a capacity crowd, with a breakfast sponsored by WPBF 25 and emceed by its morning news anchor, Paul LaGrone. South Olive Elementary School and Sunset Elementary School were presented with checks for having the most participants in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Kids Marathon Mile and Kids K. This year’s guest speaker, sponsored by Good Samaritan Medical Center, was Dara Torres, 12-time Olympic Medalist and the first swimmer from the United States to compete in 5 Olympics. In a candid presentation, this Olympian athlete proved that a truly competitive spirit is not limited by age.

Ambassador Committee What is an Ambassador? As the Chamber’s public relations committee, the Ambassadors perform many important tasks for the Chamber. Most importantly, they help recruit and retain members, assisting the Chamber in meeting its membership goals for the year. • Ambassador Call-A-Thons Call-A-Thons are scheduled at strategic times throughout the year to help bring in new members. Ambassadors invite prospective new members to events as special guests and answer questions about the Chamber. • Welcome New Members Ambassadors are special guests at New Member Jump Starts, where they share their experiences with new members to give them ideas as to which of the many benefits of membership will be most effective for them. • Event Support Ambassadors help attendees find seating assignments and name tags and facilitate introductions. • Ribbon-Cuttings Ambassadors appear in Ribbon-Cutting photos, tour member facilities and spread the word about the hosts’ companies. Special name tags make Ambassadors prominent at Chamber events. You’ll find them welcoming attendees, making sure everyone is comfortable and finding the contacts they are looking for. Need some help? Ask an Ambassador! They are among the Chamber’s most active and involved members. They’ll share their success stories and give advice, provide introductions and direction. For more information on the Ambassador Committee, contact Bryan Baker at bbaker@ palmbeaches.org or (561) 833-3711 ext. 230.
Science & Technology Committee Chair: Hollie Littlefield, Communications Network Architect, ComRes USA Meetings: 1st Wednesday of every month at 8:00 a.m. in the Chamber Board Room. The objective of the Science and Technology Committee is to provide a forum for the discussion of issues of concern to both industries. The Committee will also assist in promoting the efficient use of technology in businesses, including the development of standards for the management and application of science and technology. In addition to reviewing challenges that affect the Science and Technology industries, the committee intends to offer educational insight as a benefit to the wider membership of the Chamber of Commerce. This educational insight will include an ongoing series of seminars designed to provide information, resources, and expertise on popular topics in business technology. These seminars will empower local businesses with the tools and resources to improve technological efficiency. The ultimate aim is to become a source for information and solutions for business applications that improve the bottom line. At present, membership in the Committee is open to businesses directly involved in the field of science and/or information technology. “One of the key opportunities of belonging to the Chamber is joining a committee- these smaller groups within the Chamber meet regularly to help build local business, grow community awareness and promote networking. Committees allow the opportunity for members to get to know one another and form trusting relationships that lead to referring business. We all want to do business with people we know and trust, right? If you’re a member of the Chamber and you have not explored joining a committee, get involved today and watch your business grow!” Leslie A. Read PA Keller Williams Realty

Women in Business Committee The Women in Business Committee mission is to encourage women to expand their business contacts/opportunities by becoming active participants in the Chamber. It develops educational programs featuring tools to cope with business and career issues for women. It also assists in the recognition of women as valued leaders of the community through the ATHENA Award program. • The ATHENA Awards are held in September. The program is named after the Greek goddess of courage and wisdom and is part of Athena International, a foundation dedicated to creating leadership opportunities for women. Annually the Chamber honors an individual, a business and a young professional who mentor, serve as role models and display leadership and excel at their professions. • The goal of the committee is to bring professional women together in a monthly meeting for networking and business education. • The committee meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month, at 11:45am, in the Chamber Board Room. Members can bring their own lunch or make arrangements to purchase lunch from the Chamber. • In the spring, the group holds a Spring Cleaning Closet Clean-Out and gently worn clothing is donated to a women’s organization and in the fall the committee donates school supplies to the Belvedere Elementary School. The school, in which approximately 80% of its students are supported by No Child Left Behind federal program and receive free or reduced meals, serves the disadvantaged. For more information about the Women in Business Committee, contact Kelley Burke at kburke@palmbeaches.org or call (561)833-3711 ext 231.

Chamber Perks
Membership Helps Your Bottom Line!
M
embership in the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches has a vast array of benefits. Among them are inclusion in the many marketing tools that the Chamber produces and networking and leadership opportunities. There are avenues for making new contacts, gaining new clients and building your business. There are other ways in which the Chamber assists its members and one of them is through affinity programs. These are discount programs that save members money. Some of the programs come to our members through the Chamber’s association with the Florida Chamber of Commerce; others come in the form of member-to-member discounts. The Florida Chamber Federation works with local chambers of commerce across Florida and develops member benefits packages with substantial cost savings. The collective negotiating and buying power of the Federation allows for discounts that can have a powerful effect on members’ businesses. Examples of these programs include insurance services dedicated to the needs of small businesses, discounts on shipping services and office supplies. The most popular of these is the Office Depot program that offers deep discounts on office supplies. Many of the Chamber’s members offer special programs for fellow members in the form of a member-to-member discount. When you are looking for products and services, remember to contact Chamber members in that business category and see if they are offering a memberto-member discount on that particular item. Whether you are buying a new fax machine or having your office painted, these discounts can have a positive impact on your bottom line.
12
Business Watch
When promoting your business to Chamber members, don’t forget to include a member-tomember discount in your marketing plan. This is an excellent way to provide an incentive for the members to select your company’s product or service in their purchasing and budgeting process. It’s a way for them to experience what it is that makes your company unique. Incentive programs can also play an important role in your client retention efforts. Once you have created a “fan”, they will stay with you forever and your competition will have a hard time wooing them away from you. When looking at your company’s participation in the Chamber, don’t forget to take advantage of cost savings discount plans. Both sides of the coin, the selling and the purchasing side benefit from the relationship. It’s an example of the power of belonging to one of the strongest business organizations in the country and one that you don’t want to miss! For more information on the benefits of Chamber membership, contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director, at (561) 833-3711 ext. 235 or kfanelli@palmbeaches.org.
Article Archive: July 2010 Press Releases - The Key to Free Publicity One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to keep your business in the public eye is to send out press releases. A press release is a quick article written in news style that promotes a recent accomplishment, event, or new feature in an informative way. Writing a press release can be a very persuasive way to get your message out, and they are easier to write than you may think. Just keep these key points in mind. Is your news “newsworthy?” The purpose of a press release is to inform the world of your news item. A good press release answers all of the “W” questions (who, what, where, when and why), providing the media with useful information about your organization, product, service or event. A press release should be written like a news article, not an advertisement. Start strong. Your headline and first paragraph should tell the story. The rest of your press release should provide the details. Oftentimes only the first few sentences will be published, so make sure they have all the key information. Write a press release as you would like it told as some media will run it exactly as it is submitted. Even if your article is not reprinted verbatim, you still will be gaining exposure. Not everything is news. While the opening of a new store or the completion of a big project is exciting for you, it is important to ask yourself what about it is exciting for other people? Focus on the aspects of your news item that truly set you apart from everyone else. Newsworthy examples: Offering a unique product or service Receiving an award or community honor Fundraisers and Charity Events Special Certifications
The media loves “feel good” news and such stories will often get you the most exposure. Attach photographs when possible. Illustrate real life: Use real life examples about how your company or organization solved a problem. Identify the problem and identify why your solution is the right solution. Corporate milestones: When announcing a corporate milestone, be sure to attribute your successes or failures to one or more events. Illustrate what you did right or how you recovered from hardship. Be truthful and avoid fluff and embellishments. Additional tips: Bring your press release to life by using an active, not passive, voice. Use as few words as possible to get your point across while still painting a picture of the event. Avoid the hype and limit exclamation points. Be sure to get written permission from any individuals you quote or companies that you mention. When writing about an event, it is best to submit a “media advisory” release before the event promoting it, as well as a press release. Your press release should end with a short paragraph (company boilerplate) that describes your company, products, service and a short company history. If you are filing a joint press release, include a boilerplate for both. Submit your press release to local newspapers, clients and, of course, the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. Send press releases to Alexandra Guth at aguth@palmbeaches.org

What Does a Regional Chamber Mean to my Business? Since a Chamber membership is essentially a marketing tool, offering a consistent stream of prospective customers in a variety of business categories, the key is to find the one, or ones, that meet your marketing needs. If you are, for example, a dry-cleaners, then your entire customer base would be with in a couple of mile radios of your location. That is the nature of your business and you know that’s where your marketing need lies. Then a small Chamber that addressed that exact demographic will be perfect for your business. However, if you are that same dry-cleaners and you want to send delivery trucks out to all the major office building in the area, you want to have several locations around the area or you want to become a “destination” dry-cleaners specializing in exceptional quality, special garment storage or restoration, then you need a Chamber addressing a broader demographic. As the title suggests, the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, with its regional scope is the “big pond” that provides that reach.

What’s Up YPOP YPOP Holiday HotSpot
The Young Professionals of the Palm Beaches “YPOP”, had their annual Holiday HotSpot at the Palm Beach Airport Hilton Club10 on Thursday, December 9. YPOP once again partnered with the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program to help bring holiday cheer to those less fortunate. Thanks to the generosity of the members of the Young Professionals of the Palm Beaches, close to 75 new, unwrapped toys were donated to the Angel Tree Program at the holiday event.
The Young Professionals of the Palm Beaches thanks the Palm Beach Airport Hilton for their continued support of the group and for hosting this popular annual event. Also deserving of thanks is the University of Miami School of Business Administration as their sponsorship of YPOP helps keep the events free and open to all young professionals who wish to participate.
“As we all know times are tough but with demands continuing to increase the time to give is now” said Development & Public Relations Director, Tara Bennett. “YPOP members are listening to those demands and came bearing gifts during their Holiday Party for those who may have gone without this Christmas. Nearly 5,000 children in Palm Beach County will receive the only Christmas gifts they may get thanks to The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. On Monday, December 20th, families here in Palm Beach County will begin to receive the gifts YPOP and other supports contributed. These gifts will ensure the neediest of families will get to share in the magic of a Christmas morning this year. The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County is thankful to YPOP for ensuring that no child goes with out this Christmas.”
