MakiFOODngCHOICES Healthy Have you ever considered what perfect health is? Perfect health is reflected by a supple body, smooth skin, sparkling eyes, an excellent digestive system, a feeling of absolute well-being and an alert face. Besides, good health gives you tons of energy and an active mind. To work toward this beautiful state of life you only need to take a little care and be particular about what you eat. Given below are simple guidelines to work toward perfect health.

EATING HEALTHY ON THE GO If you find that the very survival of you and your kids seems to depend on the occasional consumption of fast food, you don’t have to cut it out altogether; you just have to make nutritious choices. Order Food to Go. You can reduce the associated fat and calorie content by eating side orders of fresh fruits and vegetables found at home. Avoid Buffets. If you want to keep your fast food and your good health, avoid all-you-caneat buffets. Forego the Fries. Remember a super-sized serving of french fries may have as many as 30 grams of fat. Stick to the “Light” Menu. Most fast food restaurants offer “light” menus and low-fat selections. Don’t Be Afraid to Special Order. Ask for condiments to be served on the side. A single tablespoon of regular mayonnaise or salad dressing contains about 9 grams of fat and 100 calories. Fear the Fryer. While fish and chicken entrees sound safe, remember that fried versions put them in the same class as burgers. Take Charge of Your Plate. The average restaurant meal contains around 1,500 calories, so eat half of your meal and save the other half for the next day’s lunch.

TEA FOR YOUR HEALTH Tea drinking has been associated with health benefits for centuries, but only in recent years have its medicinal properties been investigated scientifically. Tea’s health benefits are thought to be largely due to its high content of flavonoids—plant-derived compounds that are antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the activities of unstable molecules known as free radicals, which are natural metabolic products that can damage DNA and other cell components. Tea, particularly green tea, is the best food source of a group of flavonoids called catechins (pronounced CAT-ih-kins). In test tubes, catechins are more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties. Tea contains more than 4,000 compounds, so many more may affect the body.

WEST PALM BEACH GREENMARKET Each Saturday vendors offer a variety of farm fresh fruits and vegetables, tropical and native plants, fresh-cut flowers, artisan foods, and much more from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Waterfront Commons in Downtown West Palm Beach. For more information about the West Palm Beach GreenMarket, please call 561822-1515.

DRINKING AWAY POUNDS WITH H2O Here are five reasons why water can help cut excess weight. 1. Reduces chances of overeating. 2. Helps fat metabolize more efficiently. Water keeps the kidneys and the liver functioning efficiently. 3. Prevents the storage of water between cells, which makes you look bloated.

4. Keeps out the caffeine and sugars. 5. Gives a psychological advantage providing a positive attitude.

HELPING CHILDREN DEVELOP HEALTHY EATING HABITS There are 10 simple ways to keep kids on track in the development of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Read on to learn what you can start doing today to make their tomorrows happier and healthier. 1. Be a positive role model by practicing healthy habits yourself. This makes it easier to convince children to follow your lead. 2. Get the whole family active by planning times for everyone to get moving together. 3. Limit TV, video games and computer time as these activities result in sedentary lifestyles and excessive snacking. 4. Encourage physical activities that children really enjoy. Give them time to find something they really love and will stick with longer. 5. Be supportive and focus on the positive changes instead of the negative. 6. Set specific goals and limits, like one hour of physical activity a day or two desserts a week that are not fruit. 7. Don’t reward children with food as this encourages bad habits. 8. Make dinnertime a family time and get kids involved in planning and cooking meals. 9. Make a game of reading food labels. This will encourage healthy food choices and change behaviors for a lifetime. 10. Stay involved. Be an advocate for healthier children. Contact public officials on matters of the heart.

StayiINngTHESafSUNe Floridians love the Florida sun. However, it is important to always protect your skin while enjoying these bright rays. Read on for interesting facts about staying healthy year round. Many believe that tanning is fine if you are using sunscreen, and yet the very act of tanning indicates sun-related changes in your skin, so no tan is healthy or safe. You should apply sunscreen about an hour before going out and reapply every two hours—more often if you’re swimming.

No matter what your day may hold, you should wear sunscreen. Routinely using sunscreen is extremely important, especially if you are going to be exposed to the sun for more than 10 to 15 minutes. This includes driving, walking outside or sitting in your office in front of a window. Use sunscreen in the winter or on cloudy days, too, because UVA and UVB rays are still present. There is a common misconception that individuals with darker skin have natural sun protection and don’t need to worry about skin

cancer. This, unfortunately is false. Darker skin still tans, burns and is susceptible to skin cancer. Liberally apply suntan lotion everyday, no matter what your skin shade or type. Individuals who want to make sure they are receiving adequate amounts of vitamin D can rest assured that it only takes five to 15 minutes, two to three times a week of sun exposure to your face and hands for your body to produce sufficient amounts of vitamin D. Practicing safe sun habits is a way of life and does not just include wearing sunscreen on a daily basis. It is important to combine sunscreen with other forms of protection, such as hats or umbrellas. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so these are the times at which you should be the most careful and vigilant. By not protecting your skin from the sun, you are allowing for possible beauty blemishes like premature aging. You can witness these effects by comparing the skin on your face and hands with skin on parts of your body that aren’t regularly exposed to the sun. Finally, lovers of a golden tan should beware of tanning beds, which use ultraviolet light, similar to the UVA and UVB rays emitted by the sun. The effects of UV exposure is actually intensified in a tanning bed. An hour in a tanning bed is equivalent to spending several hours in the sun. SKIN CANCER FACTS 1. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually. 2. One in five Americans and one in three Caucasians will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. 3. Though more than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure, 70 percent of American adults do not use sunprotection measures. 4. A person’s risk for skin cancer doubles if he/she has had five or more sunburns. 5. Melanoma represents only 4 percent of all skin cancer in the United States, but accounts for more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths. 6. Melanoma incidence rates are 20 times higher for Caucasians than AfricanAmericans. However, people with darkpigment skin can also develop melanoma, particularly on the palms of the hands, on the soles of the feet, under the nails and inside the mouth. 7. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas have a 95 percent cure rate when detected and treated early. 8. Skin cancer is the No. 1 cancer in men over age 50, whereas melanoma is the third most common cancer in women aged 20 to 39. 9. Exposure to tanning beds before age 35 increases melanoma risk by 75 percent. 10. Up to 90 percent of visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun. These changes can be seen as early as in one’s 20s. The are code is (561) unless otherwise noted.

Choosi n g the Ri g ht PHYSICIAN FOR YOU To find a physician who is right for you, begin by thinking about what is important to you. You may want a doctor with an office near your home or who specializes in treating patients with a particular condition. Many people are interested in which hospitals have granted the physician admitting privileges. You may want to review the physician’s educational background, professional affiliations or other credentials. If you are insured through a private insurance plan, look at their list of participating physicians— location and specialty are available to help you focus your search. Other ways to identify candidates include the phone book, hospital referral centers and word of mouth from people you trust. Other people who share the same health concerns you do and have experience with doctors in your community may be helpful in your search. If you belong to a support group for a health condition you can ask other members of the group about their experiences with local doctors. If you are looking for a specialist, your primary care physician is a good source of expert advice. If you are in a managed care plan and are seeking a specialist, you will likely need a referral from your primary care doctor before going to your first appointment. Now that you have narrowed your search you can look into the backgrounds of several candidates further. The Palm Beach County Medical Society credentials its members and maintains a data bank of information on member physicians. Callers and visitors to its Web site can obtain information not only as to the specialty of member doctors, but where they received their education and other credentials. For more information on the Palm Beach County Medical Society, please call (561) 433-3940 or visit them online at www.pbcms.com.

Staying physically fit is not only good for your body, it also seems to help keep your mind in good shape, new study findings show. Researchers found that adults who were most fit at the start of a six-year study maintained their mental sharpness over time and did better in tests of their mental function conducted years later than did their less physically fit peers. “Physical activity appears to be good for the brain as well as the body,” study author Dr. Deborah E. Barnes of the VA Medical Center in San Francisco, California, told Reuters Health. “Older adults with higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness experience a slower rate of cognitive decline over time,” she added. Cardiorespiratory fitness describes the heart and lung’s efficiency in processing oxygen, Barnes explained. “People who are not very fit have difficulty processing oxygen when they exercise—that is why they get ‘winded’ or have difficulty breathing,” she said. Previous studies have shown that adults with low levels of physical fitness are likely to experience more mental decline over time than their more active peers, but those studies relied on the participants’ own self-reports of activity, the researchers note. Other studies that have detected an association between cardiorespiratory fitness and better mental function have been poorly designed or did not include many older individuals. In the current study, the researchers again used cardiorespiratory fitness—determined by the adults’ performance during a standard treadmill-based exercise test—because it is

largely determined by habitual physical activity, and may therefore give more accurate information than adults’ self-reports of physical activity, they note. The participants’ mental function was evaluated with a test that measured their ability to register and recall words, follow instructions and their orientation to time and place. At the start of the study, which included 349

adults aged 55 and older, none of the participants had any symptoms of cardiovascular disease, physical disability or mental impairment. Adults who were the most fit at the start of the study exhibited the least amount of mental decline, Barnes and her colleagues report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. For example, their scores on the mental state examination at follow-up were similar to their scores at the start of the study. Their least physically fit peers, in contrast, scored lower on the mental state exam by follow-up, and performed lower on other tests of their mental function, such as remembering

fewer words during the word recall test than their peers. Several explanations exist for why fitness may be associated with better mental function in older adults, the researchers note. Cardiorespiratory fitness may reduce a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other conditions known to be associated with poor mental function in older adults, they speculate. Or, cardiorespiratory fitness may be directly associated with blood flow in the brain, reductions in which have been linked to lower mental function in both Alzheimer’s disease patients and normal older adults. In a related editorial, Dr. Eleanor M. Simonsick of the National Institute on Aging and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, writes that the study “represents a shift in the right direction for studies examining physical activity, fitness and cognitive function.” She cautions, however, that the long-term association between fitness and mental function does not necessarily mean that differences in physical fitness are the cause of the differences in mental function. More study is needed, Simonsick concludes. In the meantime, Barnes advised that “older adults who are already active should keep exercising,” and those who are inactive “should consider beginning an exercise program.” Grants from the National Institute on Aging and an award from the National Institute of Mental Health funded the research.

What you Need to Know

ABOUT BONE HEALTH & OSTEOPOROSIS Bone is not a hard and lifeless structure; rather it is complex, living tissue. Bones provide structural support for muscles, protect vital organs and store the calcium essential for bone density and strength. Because bones are constantly changing, they can heal and be affected by diet and exercise. Until the age of about 30, you build and store bone efficiently. Then, as part of the natural aging process, your bones begin to break down faster than new bone can be formed. Think of your bones as a savings account. There is only as much bone mass in your account as you deposit. Source: National Osteoporosis Foundation

PEAK BONE MASS Peak bone mass refers to the genetic potential for bone density. A large decline in bone mass occurs in older adults, specifically for women around the time of menopause. Since a person with high bone mass as a young adult will be more likely to have a higher bone mass later in life, it is especially important for young girls to reach their peak bone mass in order to maintain bone health throughout life.

OSTEOPOROSIS Osteoporosis or “porous bone” is a disease of the skeletal system characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. Osteoporosis 16

www.PALMBEACHES.org

leads to an increased risk of bone fractures typically in the wrist, hip and spine. While men and women of all ages and ethnicities can develop osteoporosis, some of the risk factors are as follows: • Female • White/Caucasian • Post-menopausal women • Older adults • Small body size • Low-calcium diet • Physical inactivity Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

ASSESSING YOUR BONE HEALTH To determine if you have osteoporosis or may be at risk for the disease, your doctor will ask you a variety of questions about your lifestyle and medical/family history, including if anyone in your family has suffered from osteoporosis or fractured bones. Based on a comprehensive medical assessment, your doctor may recommend that you have your bone mass measured. A bone mass measurement test is the only way to determine if you have osteoporosis. These specialized tests, called bone mineral density tests, are painless, noninvasive and safe. For more information, visit the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Web site at www.nof.org. Facts About Heart Di s ease STROKE AND HEART ATTACK Coronary heart disease is America’s No. 1 killer and stroke is not far behind at No. 3, which is why it’s so important to reduce your risk factors, know the warning signs and know how to respond quickly and properly if warning signs occur.

PREVENTION Taking active prevention steps is the best way to combat heart disease, stroke and heart attack. The following are ways to live a hearthealthy lifestyle: • Quit smoking • Reduce blood cholesterol • Lower high blood pressure • Be physically active every day • Aim for a healthy weight • Manage diabetes • Reduce stress • Limit alcohol intake

STROKE Be sure to take note of the time when symptoms begin. If given within three hours, a clot-busting drug can reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke. • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance • Sudden severe headache with no known cause Cardiac Arrest Cardiac arrest strikes immediately and without warning. Here are the signs:

Sudden loss of responsiveness (no response to tapping on the shoulder No normal breathing (the victim does not take a normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least five seconds)

ACT QUICKLY Heart attack and stroke are life-and-death emergencies—every second counts. If you see or have any of the listed symptoms, immediately call 911. Today heart attack and stroke victims can benefit from new medications and treatments unavailable in years past. But to be effective, these drugs must be given relatively quickly after symptoms first appear. For more information, visit the American Heart Association’s Web site at www.americanheart.org.

WARNING SIGNS HEART ATTACK Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. • Chest pain or discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back; can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort • Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness Source: American Heart Association

Understandi n g CANCER QUESTIONS THAT PEOPLE ASK ABOUT CANCER What is cancer? Cancer is not just one disease. It is a group of diseases. So far, more than 100 different types of cancer have been identified. But all forms of cancer start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Most types of cancer cells form a lump called a tumor, which may invade the tissues around it. Cells from the tumor can also break away and travel to other parts of the body. There they may continue to grow and form more tumors. This process of spreading is called metastasis. Even when cancer spreads somewhere else in the body, it is still the same kind of cancer, and is still named after the part of the body where it started. For example, if lung cancer spreads to the bones, it is still lung cancer, not bone cancer. In that case, it may be said that the person has "lung cancer with bone metastases."

18

www.PALMBEACHES.org

Some cancers, such as cancers of the blood, do not form a tumor. Cancer of the blood is called leukemia. Not all tumors are cancer. A tumor that is not cancer is called benign (be-nine). Benign tumors do not grow and spread the way cancer does. In most cases benign tumors cannot kill you. Another word that also means cancer is malignant. So a tumor that is cancer is called a malignant tumor. Untreated malignant tumors can kill you. What causes cancer? Things people do Some kinds of cancer are caused by things people do. For example, smoking can cause cancers of the lungs, mouth, throat, bladder, kidneys, and other organs, as well as heart disease and stroke. While not everyone who smokes gets cancer, smoking increases a person's chance of getting the disease. Being in the sun too much without protection can cause skin cancer. Melanoma is a very serious form of cancer that is linked to sunlight and tanning bed exposure. Things people are exposed to Radiation can cause cancer. For example, people exposed to nuclear fallout have a higher cancer risk than those who were not exposed. Rarely, radiation treatment for one type of cancer can cause another cancer to grow many years later. This is why doctors and dentists use the lowest possible doses of radiation for x-rays and scans (much lower than that used for cancer treatment). Certain chemicals have been linked to cancer, too. Being exposed to or working with them can increase a person's risk of having cancer. You can learn more about these carcinogens (substances that cause cancer) in our document, Known and Probable Human Carcinogens.

Genes that run in families Of every 20 cases of cancer, about 1 is caused by genes that are inherited from parents. Bottom line No one knows the exact cause of most cases of cancer. We know that certain changes in our cells can cause cancer to start, but we don't yet know exactly how it all happens. Scientists are studying this problem and learning more about the many steps it takes for cancers to form and grow. Although some of the factors in these steps may be a lot alike, the process that happens in the cells is generally different for each type of cancer. Can stress cause cancer? Researchers have done many studies to see if there is a link between personality, stress, and cancer. No scientific evidence has shown that a person's personality or outlook can affect their cancer risk. There are many factors that come into play when looking at the relationship between stress and cancer. While it is known that stress affects the immune system, so do many other factors. Despite many studies, a link between psychological stress and cancer has not been proven. Looking at the studies that have been done, it seems they sometimes come to opposite conclusions. In one large Danish study, people who reported major stressors in their lives did not appear to have a seriously increased risk for any type of cancer. Another study that looked at women with major life stressors, such as divorce or the death of someone close, found a slight increase (about 1/3 higher than average) in breast cancer compared to women without these stressors. In the area of day-to-day stress, another study showed higher breast cancer risk linked to stress. Yet another found that women reporting higher day-to-day stress actually were less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer within the next 18 years. It is hard to explain these differences.

QUESTIONS THAT PEOPLE ASK ABOUT CANCER Some may be related to the groups that were studied, while others may be due to the way the study was done. Chance may have played a role, too. All that can be said for now is that a definite link between stress and cancer risk has not yet been found. Can cancer be prevented? Tobacco and alcohol Smoking and drinking alcohol cause some people to get certain types of cancer. Many of these cancers might be prevented by not using tobacco or alcohol. Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body and accounts for some 30% of all cancer deaths. It is best to never use tobacco at all and to stay away from secondhand smoke. Cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and oral (smokeless) tobacco products cause cancer and should not be used. People who already smoke should try to quit. Former smokers have less risk of cancer than do people who continue to smoke. Ultraviolet (UV) rays and sunlight You can lower your chances of getting skin cancer by • Staying out of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. • Wearing a hat, shirt, and sunglasses when you are in the sun • Using sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher • Not using tanning beds or lamps Diet We know that our diet (what we eat or don't eat) is linked to some types of cancer, although the exact reasons are not yet clear. The best information we have suggests a lower cancer risk for people who: • eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables (at least 5 servings a day) • choose whole grains rather than refined grains and sugars

Source: American Cancer Society

• •

limit red meats (beef, pork, and lamb) limit processed meats (such as bacon, lunch meats, and hot dogs) • choose foods to help stay at a healthy weight • limit alcohol intake to 1 alcoholic drink a day or less for women and 2 or less for men Early detection To find cancer early, adults should have regular tests, called screening examinations. Talk to your doctor about which screening tests might be right for you. If cancer is found early, it can often be treated successfully. You can learn more about things you can do to look for cancer in our document, American Cancer Society Guidelines for the Early Detection of Cancer. How many people alive today have ever had cancer? Today, about 11 million people alive in the United States have had some type of cancer. Some of these people are cancer-free; others still have the disease. Years ago, most people who had cancer did not live very long. That is not the case any more. Every year more and more people survive cancer. This is especially true of children with cancer. The survival rates are different for people with different types of cancers. Some types of cancer grow very slowly. Some respond to treatment very well. Others grow and spread faster and are harder to treat. If you know someone who has cancer, keep in mind that what happens to them could be very different from what happens to someone else with another type of cancer.

Surgery Surgery is often the first treatment option if the cancer is a tumor that can be removed from the body. Sometimes only part of the cancer can be removed. And radiation or chemotherapy might also be used to shrink the cancer before or after surgery. Chemotherapy Doctors use chemotherapy or "chemo" to kill cancer cells. The term chemotherapy refers to the use of drugs to kill cancer. Usually, the drugs are given intravenously (IV or into a vein) or taken by mouth. Chemo drugs then travel throughout the body in the bloodstream. They can reach cancer cells that may have metastasized (spread) from the tumor. Radiation therapy Radiation therapy is treatment with high energy rays (such as x-rays) to kill or shrink cancer cells. The radiation may come from outside the body, called external radiation, or from radioactive materials placed directly in the tumor (internal or implant radiation). The procedure for getting external radiation is much like that of getting an x-ray and is painless, although some people have side effects. If you'd like to read more about radiation treatment, see our document, Understanding Radiation Therapy.

How is cancer treated? Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the 3 main types of cancer treatment. A person with cancer may have any or all of these treatments. HEALTH CARE GUIDE TO THE PALM BEACHES
