Holiday Mixer Brings Cheer The Chamber spread festive cheer at the Annual Holiday Mixer held at Bistro Ten Zero One inside the West Palm Beach Marriott. Using an ingredient-driven approach, Bistro Ten Zero One offers a variety of Modern American dishes designed to suit a wide range of palates. The restaurant uses only the finest local provisions, which means their menu regularly rotates to highlight what’s fresh and in season. In fact, many of the ingredients they use come from a garden they cultivate right at the restaurant, taking the concept of farm-totable dining to the extreme. Diners can enjoy the best ingredients South Florida has to offer every day on their ever-changing menu and pair their selections with one of our houseinfused liquors or specialty cocktails. Attendees were able to bid on 30 fabulous silent auction packages including resort stays, dining certificates, gift baskets and golf foursomes. Ben Smith was the winner of the 50/50 drawing. Chamber Welcomes New Trustees Dr. Dione Christy works for the District in providing specialized training and development with special projects for youth and adults in the Culture, Safety, and Learning Division. Beyond her work in the education profession, Dr. Christy serves with committed leaders, from diverse backgrounds and talents, to contribute expertise, public service and resources for untapped impact in our community. As the Founding President of the Council of Great Public Service Leaders and as an ATHENA Individual Leadership Award Recipient, Dr. Christy will continue to serve as an ambassador of good will and public service, with other committed leaders, to more effectively meet the needs of today’s vulnerable children, families, and community conditions.
Caroline O. Harless is Co-founder of Peachtree Capital Corporation and has served as President and CEO since its inception in 1990. With locations in Atlanta, GA and West Palm Beach, FL, Peachtree Capital Corporation is an independent financial planning firm focused on providing clients with customized recommendations and strategies to fit their needs. Caroline is also General Partner with Harless & Associates, CPAs (Atlanta and West Palm Beach locations), the affiliated accounting firm.

She is a member of the Financial Planning Association, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the West Palm Beach Downtown Neighborhood Association, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County and the Florida Luxury Marketing Council. She has served as a Georgia Southern University Foundation Trustee since 2003 and as a Trustee of East Georgia College, Swainsboro, GA. Caroline also currently serves on the Patron Partnership Cabinet for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Christy has extensive global expertise and experience in research and policy development, evaluation, executive leadership, community service leadership, speech communication and public speaking, and PK20 education innovation in diverse environments and forums. Throughout the years, Dr. Christy has directed servant leadership and impact efforts as a Past President, Regional Director, Chairperson, Coordinator and as a member of Board of Governors, Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, State and National Commissioned Boards, and Advisory Boards with numerous service and community organizations. Dr. Christy is known for leading vision, soliciting talent, and implementing several awardwinning education, community, and public service models for youth, adults, and community. Dr. Christy received the Chamber of Commerce’s ATHENA Individual Leadership Award, Global Education Senior Fellow Award, Women In Leadership Award Nomination, South Florida’s SUCCESS Magazine Influential Black Professional 40 under 40, President Service Award, Phenomenal Woman Award, DWYER Award for Excellence in Special Education, and many more. In addition, Dr. Christy’s work has been commissioned, published and recognized by media and organizations for excellence in leadership; women and girls leadership advancement; SEE/STEM education advocacy; cultural and artistic dance; speech and communication; humanitarian; and community service.
Caroline began her career in finance and banking as a Bank Examiner with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta where she retired as Senior Examiner. She received her undergraduate degree in Management at Stetson University, Deland, FL and her Master of Business Administration from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA. In 1995, she and husband Steve Harless codeveloped Peachtree Resources Management, Inc., an agribusiness and hospitality company that owns the award winning Flat Creek Lodge (www.flatcreeklodge. com ) in Swainsboro, Georgia.

State of Our City Address Breakfast Mayor Jeri Muoio will deliver the annual State of Our City address, presented by Grand Bank & Trust of Florida, on Wednesday, January 18. It is themed “Building an Inspired City” and she will discuss how West Palm Beach is an inspiration city built on the talents of the residents and business and neighborhood leaders. Some of the key topics the Mayor will delve into include building on the existing resources, focusing on continuing to enhance economic development, public safety, government efficiency, and environmental sustainability and quality of life opportunities. West Palm Beach is a city that truly inspires its residents, businesses and visitors. A limited number of tabletop displays are available for $200. This includes a 6-foot skirted table, 2 chairs, table sign and 2 admissions to the breakfast. Young Professionals Host Holiday HotSpot
The Young Professionals of the Palm Beaches held their Holiday HotSpot at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott on Wednesday, November 30. Over 50 young professionals attended this evening networking event many of them bringing new, unwrapped toys as donations to the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. This is the groups third year partnering with the Salvation Army for this event. Special thanks to Patricia Johnson and Nurilay Vega with the Marriott for their generous hospitality and for donating the door prize of a 2-night weekend stay. Top Ten Reasons to Belong to the Chamber: Reason # 2 - Visibility The number one rule in public relations is similar to the famous “location, location, location” rule in real estate. Visibility, visibility, visibility. The Chamber offers its members quality visibility, often free of charge and not available anywhere else. For example, ribbon cuttings are free to members and are an excellent public relations tool. Anniversaries, new buildings and welcoming in new members, ribbon cuttings feature the member’s business and appear in Chamber newsletters, the website and select publications. It’s an opportunity to put a face with the name of your business and reinforce branding and marketing messages. Make it a celebration! Some members invite their business contacts, clients and friends and host a party to showcase their business. It can be an elaborate after-hours cocktail party or coffee and pastries with a photo opportunity. The photo can include the entire entourage or a select few, but always captures that exciting moment just before the ribbon is cut. Just the photo, please! Some members want the photo without all the fuss. Chamber representatives can come, snap a quick photo, then leave and let everyone get back to work. It’s all about the giant scissors, red ribbon and photo and it’s a plan that works best for some members. Not the right location? No problem! The Chamber has many home-based businesses and members who are in warehouses or somewhere where it’s not the perfect spot for the photo, so the Chamber boardroom is available on the first Friday of each month at noon for members who would like to have their ribbon cuttings in the Chamber building. The Chamber Ambassador committee is on hand to assist, be in the photos and congratulate the honorees. No matter which plan works best for you, don’t forget to schedule your ribbon cutting! HISTORIC TROLLEY TOURS TAKE DOWNTOWN WEST PALM BEACHERS BACK IN TIME Visitors of Downtown West Palm Beach will have another opportunity to travel back in time and learn the colorful past of the downtown district as the popular Historic Trolley Tours return for another season. The Historic Trolley Tours, provided by the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority (DDA), entertain and educate guests about Downtown West Palm Beach’s historical buildings and landmarks. The tours are scheduled to begin on Friday, January 6, 2012 and will run weekly on Fridays at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. through April 21, 2012. A job description ensures that your applicants and employees understand their roles and what they need to do to be accountable. The importance of job descriptions cannot be understated. It is essential in hiring and managing your employees. A job description: • Helps attract the right job candidates. • Describes the major areas of an employee’s job or position. • Serves as a major basis for outlining performance expectations, job training, job evaluation and career advancement. • Provides a reference point for compensation decisions and unfair hiring practices. Overview of Job Description A job description should be practical, functional and current. It also should be clear and accurate in order to effectively define your needs. Good job descriptions typically begin with a careful analysis of the important facts about a job such as: • • • • •
Individual tasks involved. The methods used to complete the tasks. The purpose and responsibilities of the job. The relationship of the job to other jobs. Qualifications needed for the job.
What to Avoid in a Job Description Don’t be inflexible with your job description. Jobs are subject to change for personal growth, organizational development and/or evolution of new technologies. If inflexible, job descriptions will keep you and your employees from trying or learning new tasks within the job. A flexible job description encourages employees to grow within their position and contribute over time to your overall business.

What to Include in a Job Description A job description includes: • Job title. • Job objective or overall purpose statement. • Summary of the general nature and level of the job (no longer than three to four sentences). • Description of the broad function and scope of the position. • List of duties or tasks performed critical to the success (including principal duties, continuing responsibilities and accountability of the occupant of the position). • Most important functional and relational responsibilities in order of significance. • Description of the relationships and roles within the company, including supervisory positions, subordinating roles and other working relationships. Additional Items for Job Descriptions for Recruiting Situations • Job specifications, standards, and requirements (minimum amount of qualifications to perform essential functions of the job such as education, experience, knowledge and skills). • Job location where the work will be performed. • Equipment to be used in the performance of the job. • Collective Bargaining Agreements (agreements and terms that relate to job functions, if applicable, such as when your company’s employees are members of a union). • Non-essential functions (functions which are not essential to the position or any marginal tasks performed by the incumbent of the position). • Salary range (pay for the position).
eBusiness Watch Proper Language in the Job Description Keep each statement in the job description crisp and clear: • Structure your sentences in classic verb/ object and explanatory phrases. Since the occupant of the job is your sentences’ implied subject, it may be eliminated. For example, a sentence pertaining to the description of a receptionist position might read: “Greets office visitors and personnel in a friendly and sincere manner.” • Always use the present tense of verbs. • If necessary, use explanatory phrases telling why, how, where, or how often to add meaning and clarity. For example: “Collects all employee time sheets on a bi-weekly basis for payroll purposes.” • Omit any unnecessary articles such as “a,” “an,” “the,” or other words for an easy-tounderstand description. Using the above example, the statement could have read, “Greets all visitors and the office personnel to the building in a friendly and a sincere manner.” • Use unbiased terminology. For example, use the he/she approach or construct sentences in such a way that gender pronouns are not required. • Avoid using words which are subject to differing interpretations. Try not to use words such as “frequently,” “some,” “complex,” “occasional,” and “several.”

The email, which gets distributed to over 3,000 Chamber members, young professionals, area residents and through numerous social media platforms, is completely free to post in.
