Business Watch Chamber membership... filling your networking gaps

MAY 2010

What Others are Saying about The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches “I just capped-off my first month in the Chamber by attending the Power Networking Lunch which was absolutely incredible; I came away with enough leads to keep me busy for the next month. As a small business owner it was a tough decision to commit the time and money to join the Chamber but it has taken me less than 30-days to generate enough new business to pay for my annual membership. The Chamber staff has gone out of their way to welcome me as a new member and the interest in my business from the Chamber members has been most rewarding. In today’s economy it’s really important that we all work together and support each other and the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches is making this happen for all its members.” “As a new member, I must say that Dave DuHamel, CEO the contacts and the events are Network Success Builders phenomenal. You guys have put (561) 598-3222 together well organized and first class events, well worth my drive from Miami. I look forward to being a guest speaker “The American Heart Association and am most appreciative of your help is proud to be a member of the in getting the message out regarding healthcare committee and we salute the need for Organ Donation. I look the Chamber of the Palm Beaches for forward to continued involvement with their dynamic programs to promote the Chamber! Keep up the good work!” and sustain a healthy, thriving business community in Palm Beach County.” Rosetta Rolle Hylton Community & Hospital Services Stacey A. Dowdle Miller School of Medicine Vice President, Palm Beach University of Miami American Heart Association (305) 243-2883 Greater Southeast Affiliate (561) 697-6614

“I really enjoyed last night’s YPOP event. It was refreshing to network with others who are professionals yet are in a younger age bracket. I met many like-minded and ambitious people and was able to exchange lots of ideas for my business as well as theirs. I am happy to be a part of this organization and am looking forward to the events to come!” Marco Ortiz Performance Data 561-771-1460 ext. 908

Amendment 4 Opens The Floodgates For Special Interest Lawsuits By Ryan Houck 401 N Flagler Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33401 | Phone: 561.833.3711 Fax: 561.833.5582 | www.palmbeaches.org

This November, voters will be faced with a number of tough decisions at the ballot box. Fortunately, one of the most important decisions should also be the easiest. Amendment 4, a “Vote on Everything” proposal, would kill jobs, raise taxes, and lead to endless litigation at taxpayer expense. Amendment 4 has been referred to as a ‘stimulus package for special interest lawyers’. And for good reason; this proposal would add costly new layers of bureaucratic red-tape to an already complicated planning process. It would be virtually impossible to condense thousands of pages of technical planning data into the 75 word ballot summaries that are required by law. Inevitably, disagreements – and lawsuits – would ensue. Amendment 4 encourages the special interests that lose at the ballot box to take their case to court, at taxpayer expense. That is exactly what happened to the small town of St. Pete Beach, which implemented a local version of Amendment 4 in 2006. The measure has decimated their economy and created chaos at the polls. To date, the citizens of St. Pete Beach have seen nearly a dozen lawsuits that have cost local taxpayers more than threequarters of a million dollars in legal fees. When St. Pete Beach voters approved four pro-economy changes to their comprehensive plan in 2008, Amendment 4 lawyers sued to overturn the results of the election. Nearly two years later, the people of St. Pete Beach are still defending their vote in court. Ward Friszolowski, the

former Mayor of St. Pete Beach wrote “Our experiment in Amendment 4 has turned St. Pete Beach into a battleground for special interests.” The same “copy and paste” lawsuits that plague St. Pete Beach would soon spread to every Florida town. Moreover, under Amendment 4, residents most impacted by local planning decisions will lose influence in a process that inherently favors deep-pocketed special interests. This measure would turn the growth management debate into a political spectacle. Neighborhoods would lose representation in the public planning process, as communities across town make decisions about schools, hospitals, jails, and landfills in your backyard. Worse still, Amendment 4 will introduce new delays into the planning process. This measure is so extreme that it does not even contain exceptions for vital community projects like hospitals, schools, police stations or fire trucks. Consequently, even important and uncontroversial community projects will likely experience paralyzing delays. As Florida attempts to recover from this devastating recession, the last thing we need is Amendment 4, a proposal that would empower special interest lawyers to raid taxpayer’s pockets in order to finance special interest lawsuits. This November, VOTE NO on Amendment 4!

Small Businesses Reap Big Rewards in the Chamber Small businesses have many of the same needs as larger companies. They need a way to reach new customers, advertise, stay current of market trends, network and control their costs. The Chamber is uniquely positioned to provide all these things under one roof.

perspectives they might miss otherwise. It allows them to share ideas, gain insights and get advice on topics they need to increase sales. A dollar saved is a dollar earned, and Chamber members have the opportunity to do both. Member-to-member discounts and savings plans passed from the Chamber to its members give them effective ways to control expenses. Increasing sales and lowering costs are important ways the Chamber helps its members reap the most from their membership and boost their overall bottom line. Both are vital for small businesses looking to grow into larger companies and for small businesses to remain the driving force behind the economy of Palm Beach County.

The diversity of the membership creates access to all types of businesses and professionals. Those contacts are vital both in terms of what’s needed to run the business and ways to find new clients and niche markets. Websites and directories make research easy and networking events facilitate introductions. Listings in directories and announcements in newsletters provide small businesses with the same impact larger companies obtain with big budget marketing dollars. The Chamber’s Trustee Program: Fast Track to the Top Looking for a way to reach the decisionmakers of the most influential Chamber members? Consider a Trustee membership for your company’s top level executive. The Trustee program provides an opportunity for executives to receive the prestige of networking with their peers while achieving maximum recognition. When they join the program, Trustees are introduced to the membership and the community with a feature article, color photograph and biography in the Chamber newsletter, Business Watch. The deadline for inclusion in the Guide to the Palm Beaches is April 30.

In addition to all the recognition and highlighted opportunities, Trustees have the benefit of exclusive networking and educational events specifically targeted to Trustee members and their guests. These include private events with local, state and national leaders, such as the upcoming event with Craig Thomas, Vice-President and Senior Economist with the PNC Financial Services Group.
